00:00:02
living in tokyo means dealing with
00:00:04
limited space in a dense environment
00:00:09
it also leads you to the simplest way of
00:00:12
life and way of thinking
00:00:15
it doesn't matter if the space is small
00:00:17
or large
00:00:19
it's about how you can adjust your life
00:00:22
in a simple way
00:00:24
i designed this home for my partner and
00:00:26
my cat cochi
00:00:29
has been our home and office
00:00:34
[Music]
00:00:38
your support on patreon means we can
00:00:40
keep the never two small episodes coming
00:00:42
so we can bring you more inspiring small
00:00:44

00:00:48
small
00:00:51
the apartment is located in setagaya
00:00:54
ward which is five to ten minutes away
00:00:56
from central tokyo
00:01:00
the train station is nearby
00:01:02
and there are temples shops and parks
00:01:07
the building was built in 1979
00:01:11
there are seven apartments here
00:01:14
each one with a different layout
00:01:18
the plan was to create a combined home
00:01:20
and office
00:01:21
the space can function independently but
00:01:24
it's all connected
00:01:26
i wanted the space to be very simple
00:01:29
warm and comfortable
00:01:33
originally there are two bedrooms on the
00:01:36
opposite side of the house
00:01:38
the kitchen and bathroom were in the
00:01:40
center of the house and connected to a
00:01:43
living room
00:01:45
i removed most of the interior walls to
00:01:48
open up the space and reorganize the
00:01:50
floor plan
00:01:52
the idea was to increase privacy and
00:01:55
quietness towards the box side of this
00:01:58
apartment so i placed the bedroom in the
00:02:01
very back and office in front everything
00:02:04
except the bus and closet is open so you
00:02:07
can fill most of this 46 square meter
00:02:10
area
00:02:12
after passing through the front door you
00:02:14
will enter a small entrance
00:02:18
i made a walking closet next to the
00:02:21
entrance
00:02:22
this walk-in closet is the largest
00:02:24
storage in this apartment
00:02:28
the living room is a step lower than the
00:02:31
rest of the apartment
00:02:33
i custom built a 2.2 meter long bench
00:02:37
seat by the window
00:02:38
beside the seat are a couple of shelves
00:02:41
that are built into a wall
00:02:46
there are sliding doors to access a
00:02:48
small balcony
00:02:50
because of the apartment regulation i
00:02:53
couldn't make a chimney for the
00:02:54
traditional fireplace so a bioethanol
00:02:57
fireplace was the next best choice
00:03:02
we love cooking so the kitchen had to
00:03:06
have both functionality and a simple
00:03:09
look that would be a part of the living
00:03:11
room
00:03:12
the kitchen has a gas stove a fish grill
00:03:15
an oven
00:03:16
and a large sink
00:03:19
the fridge and small pantry are hidden
00:03:22
in the corner of the kitchen
00:03:24
i wanted to hide some electric
00:03:27
appliances so i placed them on the side
00:03:30
as you cannot see from the living room
00:03:34
the base component of the l-shaped
00:03:37
kitchen and the small dining table are
00:03:39
made of wood and finished with water
00:03:42
resistant plastering it looks like
00:03:45
concrete but the cabinet was easy to
00:03:47
install and the finish was done at the
00:03:50
site
00:03:53
the office space is next to the living
00:03:56
room
00:03:57
the thick beams coming down from the
00:03:59
ceiling at both ends of the space create
00:04:02
cozy neck
00:04:03
the desk is made out of laminated wood
00:04:07
there are two wall mounted bookshelves
00:04:10
above the desk
00:04:12
there was a bit of space at the end of
00:04:14
the office so we created a
00:04:16
floor-to-ceiling closet
00:04:21
the bathroom and the toilet are in
00:04:23
separate rooms
00:04:25
there is a storage behind the mirror and
00:04:28
even more storage built into the wall
00:04:31
next to the sink
00:04:33
there is a washer dryer and coach's
00:04:36
litter box
00:04:38
the bathroom has a wet room it is an
00:04:41
all-in-one busting space which contains
00:04:44
both a shower and a pasta
00:04:47
this is typical in japanese home
00:04:51
when you enter the toilet room there is
00:04:53
a room with a unique floating scene
00:04:56
when we have guests they are able to use
00:04:59
the toilet and wash their hands here
00:05:02
that way we can keep our bathroom
00:05:04
private
00:05:06
i only use zambian lighting for this
00:05:08
small space to make it feel comfortable
00:05:12
the bathroom entrance is through wooden
00:05:15
canvas sliding door
00:05:17
i made the bedroom on the platform so
00:05:20
the place underneath can be used for
00:05:22
some storage
00:05:24
to make use of the dead space on the
00:05:27
wall above the vet i made a custom
00:05:29
hidden closet
00:05:32
there is an area for me to do my makeup
00:05:35
in one corner of the bedroom
00:05:38
there is a large balcony in the bedroom
00:05:41
we have some plants here
00:05:46
a house is like a container for your
00:05:48
life
00:05:50
when designing the small space
00:05:52
it needs to be well turned to fit your
00:05:54
lifestyles
00:05:56
i also think it should be adaptive and
00:05:58
generous to future changes
00:06:03
there is a big rise in old vacant
00:06:06
housing stocks in tokyo
00:06:08
so we should be responsible for how we
00:06:11
re-purpose what we have and what is
00:06:14
sustainable living

Description:

Support from our fans means we can make more episodes of Never Too Small. Find out how you can support us at https://www.patreon.com/nevertoosmall Set in a small block of 7 apartments in Setagaya ward in Tokyo, Small Design Studio’s Kumiko Ouchi re-designed this small apartment into a combined home and work space for her partner and her cat Cochi. By removing most of the interior walls, Ouchi opened up the space and created areas that are connected but also function independently. Placing the bedroom at the back of the apartment for optimal quietness and privacy, and an office space in the hallway that leads to the open plan living and kitchen area. The living room, which is a step lower than the rest of the apartment, contains a custom built 2.2m long window bench seat and a bioethanol fireplace. The adjoining L-Shaped kitchen with accompanying dining table is made from wood finished with water resistant plastering, giving it a concrete-look finish. With this simple, warm and comfortable home Ouchi has designed a space that feels more spacious than its 46m2 footprint and is truly attuned to the lifestyle and needs of its inhabitants.
