00:00:03
The design concept was to use
00:00:05
custom furniture in order to create an open space
00:00:09
For this, we teamed up with a product designer that helped us to conceive a set
00:00:14
of sliding fold furniture pieces that can be used for multiple purposes
00:00:19
but can be hidden away when not in use.
00:00:29
If you’re fan of this Never Too Small episode
00:00:32
our new book is perfect for you.
00:00:50
Discover our top 30 small footprint homes
00:00:53
available for pre-sale at the Never Too Small store.
00:00:57
We sought references from projects
00:00:59
from Asia, where there is a dense population.
00:01:03
Asia has a long history of designing small spaces
00:01:06
and we researched their methods and solutions.
00:01:15
The apartment is located in Consolação, São Paulo, Brazil.
00:01:20
Consolação is a vibrant
00:01:22
and traditionally bustling neighborhood in central Sao Paulo.
00:01:25
It is famous for its rich cultural life with easy access
00:01:29
to subway stations and bus lines.
00:01:33
The client's brief was to transform the existing 29 square meters
00:01:37
into a multifunctional space, which would fit his lifestyle.
00:01:42
The apartment was a blank canvas.
00:01:44
Originally, there was a kitchenette by the entrance, a living room,
00:01:48
a separate bedroom with an en suite bathroom and a terrace.
00:01:53
We demolished the walls that separated the bedroom and living room
00:01:56
and moved the kitchen to the other side to create one
00:02:00
unified living kitchen, dining and sleeping space.
00:02:04
The flexible use of the space was achieved by creating hybrid furniture,
00:02:09
which not only provided multi functionality,
00:02:12
but also gave the apartment a more open feeling.
00:02:21
At the entrance
00:02:22
there is a bench with a coat hanger above and the shoe rack below.
00:02:27
Besides, the bench is a utility cupboard with a built in space
00:02:31
for a small washing machine.
00:02:36
Even though the building has
00:02:37
a communal laundry room, it is quite small and always in use.
00:02:41
So our client requested to have one within the apartment itself.
00:02:48
On the opposite side
00:02:49
there is a closet with drawers, space for hangers and shelves at the top.
00:02:55
This is the main storage space in the apartment for clothes
00:02:58
and bedding.
00:03:03
The kitchen is along the wall at the end of the hallway.
00:03:06
The kitchen was an important space for the client who loves to cook.
00:03:11
For this purpose, we created a three meter
00:03:14
black granite countertop with a small splashback.
00:03:17
We added the same green tiles that were used on the floor above.
00:03:22
The countertop is equipped with a large sink,
00:03:25
a cooktop, a stove, and the microwave.
00:03:28
Above the sink.
00:03:29
There is an integrated drying rack.
00:03:34
The dining table is a folding table that can be freely moved
00:03:37
around the apartment.
00:03:41
The chairs also fold
00:03:42
and can be stored within the table.
00:03:47
With the intention of each space having its own personality.
00:03:51
We designed the floor of the apartment with different finishing materials.
00:03:56
Hardwood for the intimate area, hydraulic cement
00:04:00
tiles for the kitchen area and balcony
00:04:04
for the living area.
00:04:05
We worked in collaboration with product designer Laura Garcia
00:04:09
to create a collection of uniquely crafted hybrid furniture.
00:04:15
The first is a sofa, which is integrated to the storage wall behind.
00:04:19
It is finished in natural Freijó wood
00:04:23
and has custom red cushions.
00:04:26
We designed matching coffee table with casters
00:04:29
so they can be easily moved around. By adding a cushion
00:04:34
They can also be used as a footrest for the sofa.
00:04:39
The storage wall behind
00:04:41
the sofa spans the entire length and height of this room.
00:04:45
It contains an area on each side for plants
00:04:48
and personal objects.
00:04:52
In the evening, the section behind the sofa folds down
00:04:56
using a hydraulic system to reveal a large bed.
00:05:03
The main custom piece
00:05:05
we created for the living area is hidden within the mirror wall.
00:05:09
It slides out to reveal a wood and light green laminate
00:05:13
room divider.
00:05:17
On one side, there is a TV integrated
00:05:20
right into the unit with the soundbar hidden below.
00:05:24
All the electronics are neatly hidden away for a seamless look.
00:05:30
On the other side, there is a fold out table
00:05:32
that can be used as a kitchen surface when prepping meals
00:05:37
or as another great option when working from home.
00:05:41
When the desk
00:05:42
or TV is not in use, the whole unit simply slides
00:05:46
back into the mirror wall and disappears out of sight.
00:05:50
We chose a flexible lighting system
00:05:53
for the apartment to use depending on the client's activities.
00:05:57
For the kitchen and dining area.
00:05:59
We chose lights that can be directed in different positions.
00:06:05
The main source of natural light for the entire apartment
00:06:09
is through the large glass doors that open up to the terrace.
00:06:14
It has amazing panoramic views of the city.
00:06:18
On the terrace, we added a vertical garden
00:06:21
and the plant stand for herbs and spices.
00:06:26
With all the doors
00:06:27
open, the terrace is an extension of the apartment.
00:06:33
There is a hidden entrance to the bedroom behind the mirror wall.
00:06:38
We kept the bathroom layout the same as before, but gave it new life
00:06:43
using yellow epoxy paint in the shower.
00:06:48
above the sink is a large mirror cabinet
00:06:51
with some open shelves and some storage behind the doors.
00:06:56
The sink is in the same granite material
00:06:59
as the kitchen countertop.
00:07:05
In Brazil, it's common for new buildings to be built
00:07:08
with only the walls, floor and some basic plumbing.
00:07:13
This allows the new owner to customize it
00:07:15
to their needs and taste.
00:07:18
Designing a small space revolves around the belief that limitation
00:07:22
are not constraints, but opportunities for creativity and innovation.
00:07:29
Thanks for watching.

please share it with us at NeverTooSmall.com/submissions

Description:

Be among the first to get your hands on our second book by pre-ordering it here https://www.nts-store.com/products/never-too-small-vol-2-reinventing-small-space-living Faced with a blank canvas, the team at Studio Papaya set out to create an open flexible space using a series of custom-made multifunctional “slide and fold” furniture pieces that can be hidden away when not in use. First among these is a custom partition hidden within a mirrored wall in the open dining, living and sleeping area. When slid out, it features a TV mounted on one side and a fold-out table on the other. The focal point of this area is the custom wood and red velvet sofa on wheels integrated into the wall behind it, which folds down into a bed at night. Two small footrests beside the sofa, also on wheels, double as seats or coffee tables. A foldable dining table on wheels can be easily moved around the apartment and onto the large terrace that acts as an extension of the living area.
