00:00:03
the three main ideas designing the space
00:00:06
was privacy lighting and Storage
00:00:10
our concept was to create Urban small
00:00:13
luxury using wood metal and concrete
00:00:19
[Music]
00:00:23
your support on patreon means we can
00:00:25
keep the never too small episodes coming
00:00:26
so we can bring you more inspiring small
00:00:29

00:00:34
I'm Pearl Zhang senior spatial designer
00:00:37
at mise and Lewis and Architectural firm
00:00:40
in Seoul Korea
00:00:43
this building is located in Seoul Korea
00:00:46
in the social District
00:00:48
the building was built in 2004 it is
00:00:51
residential and commercial building
00:00:55
social district is one of the busiest
00:00:57
areas in Seoul and has shops galleries
00:01:00
cafes and pretty much all you need
00:01:03
my client frequently travels when she is
00:01:06
not traveling she enjoys being at home
00:01:09
she prefers a cozy warm space where she
00:01:12
can work cook play and rest
00:01:16
originally the studio had a bedroom
00:01:18
behind a wall with a sliding door there
00:01:21
was a kitchen in the middle and the
00:01:23
bathroom on the other end the wall that
00:01:25
separated the bedroom was unnecessary so
00:01:27
I removed him I simplified the kitchen
00:01:30
layout to suit my client's lifestyle and
00:01:33
also a rearranged the plumbing pipes to
00:01:35
move the washer and dryer the biggest
00:01:37
change to the studio was the addition of
00:01:40
a custom storage solution it stretches
00:01:42
from one end of the studio to the other
00:01:45
this would become the main piece of
00:01:47
furniture for the studio I raised the
00:01:50
ceiling height to make the studio feel
00:01:52
more spacious
00:01:54
as you enter the studio
00:01:57
there is a short hallway before the main
00:01:59
studio living area
00:02:01
all of the storage in the studio is
00:02:03
within the floor to ceiling closet which
00:02:06
sits along the right side of the wall
00:02:08
it starts from The Shoe Closet at the
00:02:11
entrance all the way to the bedroom
00:02:14
it is deep enough for a washer and dryer
00:02:16
and a styler
00:02:19
a Styler is very common in Korea it
00:02:22
steams your clothes to remove bad smells
00:02:24
and can also dry them when they are wet
00:02:28
we chose to place the noisy elements
00:02:31
like the Watchtower and styler near the
00:02:33
entrance and away from the bedroom
00:02:36
the rest of the storage is for clothes
00:02:38
and other personal items
00:02:41
behind the Walnut sliding door and
00:02:43
vibration finish stainless steel sliding
00:02:46
door is the entertainment unit
00:02:49
these sliding doors can also slide from
00:02:52
the kitchen all the way to the office
00:02:53
the doors in the studio were inspired by
00:02:57
the Korean traditional doors at my
00:02:59
family home
00:03:01
they are called Kantai and are made from
00:03:03
wood slots
00:03:06
the living room sits between the kitchen
00:03:08
and bedroom areas
00:03:10
the client lives here alone and she
00:03:12
actually enjoys being at home by herself
00:03:14
so she did not have a knee or a sofa
00:03:17
instead she has ergonomic chairs from
00:03:20
barrier
00:03:22
along the back wall we installed some
00:03:25
plywood panels stained in Walnut they
00:03:28
are the same height as a kitchen counter
00:03:30
and stretch to the bedroom and double as
00:03:33
the Bed Head
00:03:36
the kitchen is quite large for a small
00:03:39
Studio there is a large kitchen island
00:03:41
made from hpl plywood and finished with
00:03:45
a three mil vibration finished stainless
00:03:47
steel top
00:03:48
we chose a pendant light by marset's
00:03:51
Neon deluce in order to light the entire
00:03:54
Island while keeping Dubai feeling chic
00:03:57
we decided not to have storage cabinets
00:04:00
above the kitchen counter in order to
00:04:02
keep the kitchen feeling spacious
00:04:05
the sink has a dedicated tab for hot and
00:04:08
cold drinking water it also has a mode
00:04:11
for washing vegetables and fruits this
00:04:14
is popular in Korea
00:04:17
we installed the Big Slab tiles on the
00:04:19
wall to zone out the kitchen it's also
00:04:22
easier to clean
00:04:25
dividing the bedroom area and the living
00:04:27
area is a walnut wood partition
00:04:31
the slated side was inspired by
00:04:33
traditional Korean wood doors
00:04:35
it partially blocks the view of the bed
00:04:37
from the entrance but still allows a
00:04:40
light and air to flow through
00:04:42
it also acts as the bedside tables
00:04:46
the office is integrated into the corner
00:04:49
of the bedroom the desk and shelves are
00:04:51
mounted on the wall to give it a
00:04:53
seamless look
00:04:56
unlike the rest of the studio the
00:04:59
bathroom has a warm but bright tone
00:05:01
we chose not to have light coming
00:05:04
directly from the ceiling instead we
00:05:06
installed them along the edge of the
00:05:08
lower ceiling so they can bounce off the
00:05:11
walls and create a really nice soft look
00:05:14
above the sink we created a ledge for a
00:05:17
client to put her daily bathroom items
00:05:23
on the floor I used a large Italian
00:05:25
tiles from Blue Style
00:05:28
it was important to the client that the
00:05:31
lighting in overall space was soft
00:05:35
we used LED strip lighting that bounced
00:05:38
off the side of the walls to create a
00:05:40
warm soft mood
00:05:43
we added RGB lights inside the TV area
00:05:46
for a bit of fun
00:05:49
I think small spaces have
00:05:51
a lot of potential and with the careful
00:05:54
design it could accommodate various
00:05:57
different Lifestyles to create a unique
00:05:59
space
00:06:00
it is important to upcycle these Studios
00:06:03
so we can have more housing in the
00:06:06
future
00:06:07
it is more sustainable to use the spaces
00:06:10
we already have than to create a whole
00:06:13
new space
00:06:14
thanks for watching and if you're an
00:06:16

Description:

Support from our fans means we can make more episodes of Never Too Small. Find out how you can support us at https://www.patreon.com/nevertoosmall Located in the bustling Seo-cho district of Seoul, the aptly named Seoul Seocho Studio was meticulously transformed by designer Pil Jung from Korean architectural firm Mies & Louis. The biggest change being the addition of a single custom built floor-to-ceiling storage piece that stretches from one end of the studio to the other and containing all the studio’s storage including laundry facilities, a styler, an entertainment unit as well as an office. Two sliding doors, one made from vibration finish stainless steel and one from slatted walnut inspired by the traditional Korean Gan-Sal doors, cover the entertainment unit and can be moved along the length of the storage unit. The Gan-sal door theme continues into the bedroom where a slatted walnut partition divides the bedroom from the living area whilst still allowing light and air to flow through. Through careful design Jung has created a unique inner city sanctuary for his client.
