00:00:03
The apartment is located
00:00:05
in the heart of the 8th arrondissement in Paris, next to the Pont de l’Alma.
00:00:11
Paris is a very active
00:00:12
and loud city, which can feel overwhelming at times.
00:00:16
So the main concept was to create a very comfortable space
00:00:19
that would blur away all the stress that might come with the high activity
00:00:23
and movement around Paris.
00:00:28
Everything in this apartment
00:00:29
except the couch, the puffer and the dining chair
00:00:32
was either refurbished or designed and built by us.
00:00:38
We're 23 years old
00:00:39
and have been best friends ever since we were kids.
00:00:44
This apartment belongs to Yosua's family.
00:00:46
When we had the opportunity to refine our talents and renovate the apartment,
00:00:50
we felt extremely privileged.
00:00:54
I live on my own,
00:00:55
but since I have a big family, I love to have them stay over.
00:01:00
Having a West African background,
00:01:02
there's a common practice of hoarding and having many objects
00:01:05
sitting around the house, which pushed me to the extreme opposite: minimalism and simplicity.

00:02:20
The 8th arrondissement
00:02:21
has a very rich historical heritage.
00:02:26
It's in a popular tourist location
00:02:28
with nice buildings and large avenues.
00:02:35
The building itself
00:02:36
has six floors and was built in 1910.
00:02:40
There are only a few apartments, so the neighbors all know each other.
00:02:43
And there's a very good relationship between the residents.
00:02:50
For this project
00:02:51
we had relatively limited resources.
00:02:54
So the main focus was to make the most of what we had.
00:02:57
We were looking to create small space with a grand feeling,
00:03:00
something quite minimal but functional at the same time
00:03:03
that maintained its identity and had a calming feeling to it.
00:03:10
Before our renovation, the
00:03:12
apartment was left vacant for years and in a very bad condition.
00:03:16
There was a lot of mess, It had clothes and bags
00:03:20
all around.
00:03:24
The apartment had a large living room
00:03:25
by the entrance and two bedrooms next to it.
00:03:29
There was an L-shaped corridor which led to the kitchenette and the bathroom.
00:03:34
We removed every wall except one bedroom wall.
00:03:37
This wall was extended across the width of the apartment.
00:03:41
A large kitchen, dining and living area was added to the open plan space.
00:03:46
The bedroom is accessed through a hidden door from the kitchen.
00:03:49
Lastly, a bathroom was added in the corner
00:03:52
of the apartment.
00:03:57
At the entrance,
00:03:58
we kept a piece of the old existing wall in order to add a feeling of privacy
00:04:03
when visitors enter the apartment
00:04:06
To prevent
00:04:07
direct view into the kitchen, we created a full height wardrobe
00:04:11
that is used to hang jackets and store shoes.
00:04:16
you also find a full body mirror in a round shape
00:04:19
that we designed to replicate the shape of the existing windows.
00:04:26
For the electrical distribution box
00:04:28
we created a semi-open cabinet with a walnut back wall.
00:04:33
Stepping into the apartment,
00:04:35
you'll find an open plan living kitchen and dining room.
00:04:40
We opted for a light oak floor throughout the apartment.
00:04:44
It is a parquet en point de hongrie, an emblematic type
00:04:47
of flooring in Paris.
00:04:51
It was important for us to refurbish the existing fireplace.
00:04:54
We took apart the surrounds, gave it a new coat of dark green,
00:04:58
then closed the opening.
00:05:03
The custom
00:05:04
coffee tables are made out of solid
00:05:05
oak in a round shape, which makes it easier to move around.
00:05:09
It also takes up less space,
00:05:15
I found the chair, which was in terrible condition
00:05:17
in our attic and I always knew that I wanted to give it a second life.
00:05:24
I took the chair apart entirely and sanded the wooden parts.
00:05:28
We chose a new cloth which looked similar
00:05:31
to the cloth of the couch.
00:05:36
To draw the attention away from the asymmetric position
00:05:40
of the fireplace, we created a continuous sideboard with two shelves.
00:05:46
In order to maximize storage, we added walnut
00:05:48
veneer doors along the narrow slope under the windows.
00:05:52
Having a continuous woodgrain was key component to making the space
00:05:56
feel more balanced.
00:06:01
We chose to keep the original radiators,
00:06:03
so we took them to Germany, where I’m based.
00:06:07
They were entirely cleaned and colored in the same green as the chimney.
00:06:16
The kitchen overall has a very simplistic look with no visible handles.
00:06:20
We integrated recessed grip profiles
00:06:23
for a sleek look and extended it throughout the unit.
00:06:27
What initially draws the eye to the kitchen is the shiny backsplash
00:06:31
made from the same walnut veneer as seen in other parts
00:06:34
of the apartment.
00:06:38
It was coated with several layers of varnish,
00:06:41
making it shiny and water resistant.
00:06:44
When designing the kitchen, we chose to prioritize bench space
00:06:48
because I often have friends over to cook together.
00:06:54
The dining table came from the same slab of wood
00:06:57
as the coffee tables in the living room.
00:07:01
The shape of the dining table was created by us in a way
00:07:04
that gives easy access to the window and its beautiful view.
00:07:11
We included a sitting bench for up to three people
00:07:17
On the right side of the bench, we created a cabinet
00:07:20
with integrated sockets to charge phones and laptops.
00:07:24
I work more and more from home, and I often get on video calls.
00:07:29
So I added acoustic panels above the seating bench to help
00:07:32
absorb the echo and hide the AC.
00:07:39
We thought that designing
00:07:40
the door to make it look like an extension of the kitchen cabinet
00:07:44
would not only be a surprising factor, but would also add
00:07:48
on to the overall simplistic look we were looking to achieve.
00:07:54
The custom walnut
00:07:55
queen size bed frame has additional support,
00:07:58
which we positioned in the middle to make it look like
00:08:01
it's floating.
00:08:04
We designed the bedside tables with the same walnut veneers
00:08:08
as the panels and the bed frame, which are all custom made as well.
00:08:13
We chose classical bedside lamps, which we built into the walnut back wall.
00:08:20
We made the handles of the
00:08:21
wardrobe out of walnut and gave them more grip shape.
00:08:26
The length of the handles adds an aspect of height
00:08:29
which reduces the bulky look a wardrobe
00:08:32
might usually have.
00:08:36
The integrated TV can be pulled out to access connections
00:08:40
and hide devices behind.
00:08:47
We decided to experiment in the bathroom
00:08:50
and went for a completely different style altogether.
00:08:55
The tiles are a synthetic marble.
00:08:58
Since it has anti-slip properties, we chose to use them on the floor
00:09:03
as well as the walls to have a uniform look.
00:09:08
A true highlight in the bathroom
00:09:10
is the skylight that directly falls onto the shower.
00:09:16
There was a chimney shaft where the old kitchen was.
00:09:20
So we built a cabinet that perfectly covers the shaft and creates
00:09:24
additional storage, which also fits a space saving water heater.
00:09:29
The sink we chose is made out of mineral cast. Under it we fitted a vanity that has two drawers
00:09:35
which lights up with the open space.
00:09:38
We initially added the lower parts of the rods for stability, but felt that
00:09:43
extending them could add a good sense of perspective
00:09:46
and division.
00:09:50
We exchanged the old window with a German window, which has the unique characteristic
00:09:55
that it can be left half open for ventilation.
00:09:58
The film we added on the window gives some privacy to the bathroom.
00:10:03
Designing a small space
00:10:05
can be challenging, because every square meter
00:10:08
has to carefully be considered in terms of functionality,
00:10:12
but beautiful because when executed, you can feel
00:10:15
how much thought went into every little detail.
00:10:20
Thanks for watching.

Description:

Start your very own website using the free Website Builder from Odoo https://www.odoo.com/r/pCdz In the heart of Paris' historic 8th Arrondissement, two 23-year-old designers, one a furniture maker and one a budding architect, transformed a neglected apartment into an elegant, minimalist home with a calming neutral palette and walnut accents throughout. They designed and refurbished much of the space and furniture themselves, preserving its Parisian charm with classic parquet flooring and restoring the original fireplace and radiators. Low cupboards with continuous wood grain line the living room, extending around the fireplace and into the bedroom to form the bedhead and bedside tables. The sleek kitchen cabinetry seamlessly incorporates a hidden bedroom door and continues into the dining area, where it becomes a built-in bench seat or spare bed for guests.
