00:00:06
This is a 27m2 apartment.
00:00:08
It’s just one big room.
00:00:13
So the tricks we use is to try to break up
00:00:16
and create different experiences within the space.
00:00:21
A lot of little pockets, vibes and moods.
00:00:25
It's about meandering, extending the journey.
00:00:30
That gives you the illusion of space.
00:00:35
I'm Hidy. I'm Jack.
00:00:37
We're from tsai Design. We're an architectural
00:00:39
and interiors design studio based in Geelong, Victoria.
00:01:05
This apartment is located in St Kilda.
00:01:10
It's a famous beach suburb in Melbourne.
00:01:15
So there's a good mix of old and new buildings
00:01:17
and cafes and pubs just down the street.
00:01:22
It’s in close proximity to the major hub of
00:01:25
St Kilda and public transportation at the corner as well.
00:01:32
We think this building is built in the 1970s.
00:01:37
There's around 52 units
00:01:39
and they're all studio apartments.
00:01:44
The client’s currently based overseas.
00:01:46
They spend a few months at a time in Australia.
00:01:52
They wanted to create a space comfortable
00:01:54
for two people to live and work from home.
00:01:58
They’re also interested in exploring the potential
00:02:00
for this apartment to be used as a short stay accommodation
00:02:04
when they're not in the country.
00:02:09
The original apartment was quite tired and really needed a refresh.
00:02:14
The bathroom is awkwardly placed
00:02:15
and is the first thing you see when you enter the space.
00:02:19
The bathroom ceiling was dipping
00:02:21
and we found a bird nest in the roof space.
00:02:24
But the big window has great opportunity,
00:02:26
well capturing the trees in the front.
00:02:33
So structurally, the only change we made
00:02:36
was switching the bathroom door to a more discreet location.
00:02:41
We also
00:02:42
re-orientated the kitchen, turning it 90 degrees
00:02:45
from the short wall to the window fronts. We created a hero
00:02:49
copper mirrored pod in the centre of the apartment.
00:02:53
Outside, the idea is to have all the spaces you expect in a house,
00:02:58
There is a common laundry on the same floor in the building, so the client is actually
00:03:02
using the common laundry instead of having a washing machine in the apartment.
00:03:08
The moment you walk into the apartment,
00:03:10
the first thing that catches your eyes is the copper finish joinery
00:03:14
in contrast to the calm and pale palette of the rest of the apartment.
00:03:19
We also placed a small stool at the entry so people can sit and take off their shoes
00:03:23
when they arrive.
00:03:28
The copper joinery is the heart of the apartment
00:03:31
wrapping around the existing walls, to create division and intrigue.
00:03:37
This joinery is the main storage of the apartment,
00:03:40
housing kitchen storage, wardrobe, a fold up desk,
00:03:44
display bookshelf and general storage.
00:03:48
The initial idea of having the mirror copper cladding is to bounce the light
00:03:53
around and create a visual distraction from the direct
00:03:56
view into the bathroom.
00:03:59
The skirting is a mirror
00:04:01
finish which creates illusion of the floorboards
00:04:04
continuing throughout the space.
00:04:09
We use cork flooring throughout the apartment.
00:04:12
The cork flooring is a bit softer than timber and has a bit of exaggerated texture,
00:04:18
which give a bit more character to the apartment.
00:04:25
We created this
00:04:26
TV unit for the living room, housing a TV
00:04:29
and also more storage, including a storage for vacuum cleaner
00:04:34
on the left, and more open display shelves.
00:04:40
We created the
00:04:42
curve to end the TV unit to create a bit more of a flow.
00:04:46
it also mirrors the copper joinery, which also has the same profile.
00:04:53
For a small space, every
00:04:54
pocket of space you can find, we try to make use of it.
00:04:58
We utilized the space
00:05:00
above the door, creating a continuous shelf
00:05:04
that extends from the TV unit all the way into the bedroom.
00:05:08
Because there's a curtain that separates the bedroom from the rest of the space
00:05:13
we create illusion of a continuous shelf just by the alignment.
00:05:20
The kitchen is re-positioned in front of the big window,
00:05:25
and we extend the kitchen bench top on top of the windowsill
00:05:28
to maximize the prep space.
00:05:31
Our client’s not a big cook.
00:05:33
So the kitchen is designed as a kitchenette setting.
00:05:37
We have Corian for the benchtop
00:05:38
and the sink so we can create a seamless continuous surface.
00:05:43
And copper tapware to match the copper joinery.
00:05:49
Under the bench
00:05:50
we have the bench storage drawers for cutlery, dishwasher, fridge drawer
00:05:55
and a standalone microwave oven.
00:05:58
We integrated the appliances under the bench so we can have a clean
00:06:01
linear kitchen.
00:06:08
The rest of the storage are all housed in the copper joinery.
00:06:12
We also played with the internal color of the units,
00:06:15
having the blue in the kitchen section, the yellow for the wardrobe
00:06:20
and, terracotta for the shower space.
00:06:24
A coffee nook
00:06:26
on the side of the kitchen bench houses the coffee machine capsules and all.
00:06:31
To make it efficient, we have to create a bifold door
00:06:34
so it doesn't impede into the sink area.
00:06:40
The dining table also doubles
00:06:42
as a kitchen island, and the chair can be folded away and stored in the wardrobe.
00:06:48
The client themself came up with a really clever idea
00:06:51
of having a couch from e9 Design Furniture, with flexible backings,
00:06:56
which enable us to use it for both lounging and dining
00:06:59
simply by repositioning the backrest.
00:07:03
Lighting wise, we have track lighting in
00:07:05
for the living room and the bedroom and also a wall light for the kitchen.
00:07:10
We try to avoid having pendant light from the ceiling
00:07:14
so that people can focus on the copper joinery.
00:07:20
The queen sized bed is in the darkest corner of the apartment
00:07:24
with a block out curtain to separate it from the living area.
00:07:28
The block out curtain actually has linen and a block out sheet in the middle
00:07:33
and then linen on the other side.
00:07:34
So it looks like linen fabric, but it’s actually a block out curtain.
00:07:41
The wardrobe is housed in
00:07:42
the copper joinery next to the bed,
00:07:46
and there is extra hanging
00:07:48
under the overhead shelf.
00:07:54
Occasionally both clients need to have a quick meeting separately.
00:07:58
Then one can sit at the dining table, while the other one can work
00:08:02
on a small fold up study on the side of the joinery.
00:08:06
Above the study table, we have magazine racks.
00:08:09
So the client can put their magazine or books or any small
00:08:13
display items.
00:08:20
The toilet sits just behind the concealed pivot door, which
00:08:23
swings both ways for ease of access,
00:08:27
While the shower and vanity sits inside
00:08:30
the copper pod.
00:08:36
There's storage behind the mirror above the sink.
00:08:39
And below the sink
00:08:40
we also have more extra storage.
00:08:43
The shower area is in terracotta
00:08:46
and then the rest of the space is painted to match the tile color.
00:08:51
Due to the size of the shower space, the shower door is a bi-folding system
00:08:56
so it's quite compact.
00:09:00
We're trying to create like a layering of experiences.
00:09:04
So there's, you know, open plan on the outside and then the bathroom that's a bit more,
00:09:08
dynamic, moodier.
00:09:11
Breaking up the space, breaking up the experience kind of extends the journey
00:09:17
through the house and gives that impression that it’s a bigger space.
00:09:23

Located in a 70's walk-up in the inner seaside suburb of St. Kilda in Melbourne, the heart of this studio apartment’s redesign by the talented team at tsai Design is a majestic floor-to-ceiling mirrored copper pod. This multifunctional centrepiece, which wraps around the existing bathroom wall and curves towards the sleeping area, houses both kitchen and bedroom storage with vibrant internal colours and includes a hidden fold-out table for added versatility. The rest of the apartment remains open, with thoughtful space-saving features, such as a curtain to reveal or conceal the bedroom, an extended shelf from the TV unit into the bedroom, and a couch with a flexible back for dining or lounging, that allow the space to evolve throughout the day without feeling crowded or difficult to convert.
