The sun returned, but faith did not. The altars of the Shrouded Age were abandoned, and the outposts fell to wind and ash. Yet one man remained—Ser Calren, a knight of no fame and fewer followers, who refused to leave his post at the edge of the high cliffs. For seven years he stood alone, until one night in the fog-thick dark, he saw a lantern swinging in the vale. He descended, sword drawn. But it was no patrol. It was Yarel, cloaked in light. The figure did not speak with a mouth, but with warmth: “I have not fallen. I have sailed beyond the Third Cradle. Guard my flame.” No one believed him. Calren rode across the fading kingdoms. He found Varn the Broken, a disgraced brawler whose hands had once crushed a priest’s throat. He found Ilessa of Veyne, a shield-maiden fleeing her fallen hall, carrying a son born in silence. And he found Dellin, a quiet baker’s boy from the salt coast. Together, they preached not salvation, but warning: Yarel had not vanished—and the Second Sun would rise again. They built Solspire where the apparition had stood, over the buried altar once known as Sunpost Nine. Stone by stone, they raised a city facing west, toward the lands no maps remembered. At its heart, they built the Chamber of Vigil, and in it, the Silent Flame—a fire that has never flickered since the day it was lit. The Order of the Silent Flame grew from those who came after: watchers, widows, and heretics who dreamed the same dream. They speak no vows. They eat once a day. And each night, they climb the Spire and gaze westward, waiting not for light, but for the shadow that comes before it. But the dream has rotted. In the present age, the Order still watches—but not all of them watch for Yarel. This was centuries ago—long before the Tarnished Age, when Solspire still stood bright, when pilgrims sang at dawn, and the Second Sun had not yet been forgotten.
