00:00:09
hey what's happening guys you know what
00:00:12
today we're going to talk about
00:00:13
resistance and reading resistance that
00:00:16
is very low
00:00:18
say it less than an ohm well it can be
00:00:21
done and it's not hard to do it can be a
00:00:24
bit more tricky than reading you know
00:00:27
resistance that is higher than an ohm so
00:00:30
let's get this meter here and for
00:00:37
instance here is a 10 watt 10 ohm power
00:00:42
resistor and we'll connect it up to the
00:00:46
leads and we're seeing what ten point
00:00:50
four ohms okay I mean that's quite
00:00:54
believable right but then if we connect
00:00:57
our leads together you know we're seeing
00:01:03
point 1 4 ohm resistance just from our
00:01:07
leads so it adds a little bit of
00:01:11
uncertainty into our measurements now
00:01:15
here is a six-foot long piece of
00:01:19
stranded 22 gauge wire say we want to
00:01:23
know the resistance of it so I put it
00:01:28
here in the meter and let it measure it
00:01:31
and we get 0.27 ohms
00:01:38
now this meter is a 10,000 count so it's
00:01:42
you know it's got decent resolution and
00:01:46
that's probably in the ballpark for this
00:01:49
but you know it doesn't give me any
00:01:51
confidence in the measurement and again
00:01:53
we have the resistance of the leads and
00:01:56
the reason I'm doing this is because I'm
00:02:00
gonna do a video coming up here and the
00:02:02
next week or so about test leads are
00:02:08
these are the leads that came with this
00:02:09
aining meter you know they're totally
00:02:12
no-name Chinese
00:02:14
and then here's the O one meter with its
00:02:21
unbranded Chinese ium leads here is a
00:02:27
set of unity leads and here is a set of
00:02:37
fluke
00:02:38
leads and I'm gonna order a set of probe
00:02:43
master leads as well and we're gonna see
00:02:46
how the different qualities of leads
00:02:50
make a difference but I guarantee you
00:02:54
even with the shittiest of the
00:02:56
leads the resistance is going to be well
00:02:59
under Nome it's going to be well under
00:03:00
half an improperly if it's over a half
00:03:02
of them then wow that's really really
00:03:05
bad so we need to measure with
00:03:08
confidence a low resistance and even
00:03:12
with a good meter it's kind of hard to
00:03:14
do so what we're gonna need to do is
00:03:18
take a four wire measurement and it's
00:03:22
not hard not hard at all what we're
00:03:26
gonna have is a constant current source
00:03:30
and our resistor or in this case wire or
00:03:36
leads and our costs and current source
00:03:43
we're going to set for one volt at one
00:03:48
milliamp no I'm sorry one volt at ten
00:03:52
milli amp one volt at ten million and
00:03:56
then all we need to do is to come over
00:04:00
here
00:04:02
and measure the voltage drop across that
00:04:08
resistor and if we do that we now have
00:04:13
all the information necessary to bring
00:04:18
in our old friend Ohm's law you're
00:04:25
familiar with the Ohm's law triangle I
00:04:26
hope if you're not you should learn it
00:04:29
so V equals I times R well we know I we
00:04:34
know V we don't know R so then R equals
00:04:40
V over I and then we can figure it out
00:04:46
by measuring our voltage drop right here
00:04:50
now if you have a high-end bench meter
00:04:54
it probably has the capability to do a
00:04:57
four wire measurement also called a
00:04:59
Kelvin measurement but if you don't have
00:05:02
such a meter and I don't hear another in
00:05:05
the home office so to speak you can do
00:05:10
it with two multimeters and a power
00:05:14
supply so that's what we're gonna do
00:05:16
here we're going to bring in the O one
00:05:21
meter for our ammeter
00:05:26
we're going to bring in the 8008 to
00:05:32
measure our voltage drop and off-camera
00:05:36
I have my bench power supply set for 1
00:05:40
volt at point 1 milliamp so here's how
00:05:46
we're going to hook it up here is our
00:05:47
wire our device under test from the
00:05:51
power supply to the wire from the wire
00:06:03
to the input I'm going to make sure I
00:06:09
don't get my cables mixed up here to the
00:06:14
input of our ammeter and the output from
00:06:25
our amp meter goes back to the power
00:06:32
supply so now if I turn this on to
00:06:36
milliamps let me turn out that light out
00:06:41
of there now if we adjust this as close
00:06:45
as we possibly can to 10 power supplies
00:06:49
a little bit touchy
00:06:55
and then we will bring in trying to get
00:07:04
my hands on this we will bring in our
00:07:06
other meter to read the voltage drop so
00:07:08
I'm just gonna clip this on right here
00:07:11
put that guy on voltage we will adjust
00:07:15
this as closely as we can again to ten
00:07:18
milliamps come on settle down all right
00:07:31
and we'll take a reading of our voltage
00:07:34
here and we have a drop of 1.2 but
00:07:42
millivolts so we bring back in the piece
00:07:50
of papel and we know that resistance
00:07:56
equals voltage which is point zero one
00:08:03
two divided by I which is point one and
00:08:11
then grab the old calculator and we say
00:08:16
point zero one two divided by 0.1 equals
00:08:26
0.12 or 12 millions so now we know with
00:08:35
more confidence that 12 milli ohms is
00:08:40
the resistance of that piece of wire our
00:08:46
device under test and now we will be
00:08:49
able to when we have all of these meter
00:08:51
leads at hand the test each of these
00:08:56
meter leads see which one offers the
00:08:58
least resistance which will mean it will
00:09:01
give us the best readings for voltage
00:09:08
well it'll give us the best readings
00:09:09
throughout the range of readings on the
00:09:12
meter it will be the best quality test
00:09:14
leads that we can get now I'm gonna
00:09:17
predict that the unity ones will be the
00:09:21
crappiest and either the fluke or the
00:09:26
probe master ones will be the top but
00:09:28
you know we will have to wait until
00:09:30
those probe master ones come in and I
00:09:32
imagine they'll be here in a couple days
00:09:35
so probably by the end of the week we'll
00:09:37
have it anyway that's it for this video
00:09:40
I hope you guys enjoyed this in you
00:09:42
learned a little something about how
00:09:44
absolutely simple it is to do a four
00:09:47
wire measurement if you have any
00:09:50
questions post them down below comment
