A playthrough of Riverhill Soft's 1995 murder mystery/detective game for the Pioneer LaserActive w/Mega-LD PAC, J.B. Harold: Blue Chicago Blues. The J.B. Harold series originally kicked off in 1986 on Japanese PCs with Murder Club, which was first published in English for Dos PCs in 1989, and is perhaps best known by its 1991 remake for the TurboGrafx-CD (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jRyUNZSzi4%29. Murder Club's direct sequel, Manhattan Requiem, was released in English in 1993 as an LD-ROM² title for the Pioneer LaserActive. Blue Chicago Blues was the fifth and final entry in the J.B. Harold series, and it was the third (and final) one to be officially released in English. Like Manhattan Requiem, the North American release of Blue Chicago Blues was a LaserActive exclusive, though it was made available in both Mega-LD and LD-ROM² formats. If you aren't familiar, the Pioneer LaserActive was a Laserdisc player that could be turned into a *very* premium game console by installing one of two modules ("PACs") in its expansion bay. NEC's LD-ROM² PAC enabled support for TurboGrafx games on HuCards, CDs, and LD-ROM² formatted LaserDiscs. Sega's Mega-LD PAC supported games for the Genesis, Sega CD, and the Mega-LD LaserDisc format. When the hardware debuted in 1993, the LaserActive deck retailed for $970 USD, game PACs sold for $600 each, and LaserDisc-based games went for $100 a pop. Just think, with the $1700 (appx. $3800 in 2025 money) you'd have spent on a LaserActive, a PAC, and a game, you could've had two NeoGeo AES Gold systems, or a used car! Then again, it was not a product catering to the working class market, and its price tag positioned it as a high-end piece of A/V equipment, not a game console. Riverhill Soft went all out in ensuring that Blue Chicago Blues made the most of the LD format. The game comes on a dual-layer, double-sided disc that holds nearly four hours worth of high-quality video. The game follows the same format as the older games - someone has been murdered, and JB has to solve the case by finding clues and interrogating suspects - but the shift to FMV makes it feel more like a television drama than the older games that stick to text prompts and voiceovers. The scope of the world and the story were reined in to accommodate space limitations, and the challenge has been dialed way back, but it's pretty engaging throughout. The writing is cheesy and the quality of the acting ranges from decent to laughably awful, but the production values are extraordinarily high for a game of its time, and I had a blast seeing the mystery through to the end. If you want to play it yourself, this is easily the best version of the game, and it runs perfectly on Ares (a multi-system emulator). The console and PC ports replaced the majority of the FMV clips with digitized stills and voiceovers, and the IOS remake is limited to cheap-looking drawings and walls of text. _____________ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
