call a hyper-realistic mask, made of latex,
00:04:50
driving an SUV decked out in emergency lights

He became a star and stunned the 23 million people

who were watching this scene.
00:16:44
- Oh.
00:16:47
This is awkward.
00:16:49
- And now, this 52 year old man we all know
00:16:52
is walking into the room.
00:16:53
- This is wonderful and you are tall.
00:16:56
- I am tall.
00:16:57
- Yeah.
00:16:59
- It helps.
00:17:00
- I like it.
00:17:01
(laughing)
00:17:03
- He is here to talk about his shattering medical diagnosis
00:17:08
so that anyone else who receives the same news
00:17:10
will know they're not alone.
00:17:12
- Take me back to the first thing
00:17:15
that made you concerned, worried, baffled,
00:17:19
Where did it begin?
00:17:22
I started experiencing some weakness in my right hand.
00:17:29
And I didn't really think anything of it.
00:17:33
At the time I thought maybe I'd been texting too much
00:17:36
or my hand was the tea.
00:17:38
But a few weeks later I noticed it got a little worse.
00:17:42
So I went and saw a hand specialist who sent me to
00:17:46
another hand specialist.
00:17:48
I went and saw neurologists and neurologists sent me to
00:17:50
another neurologist and said, this is way above my pay grade.
00:17:54
Finally, after nine months, the crushing reality.
00:17:57
He is told he has the incurable disease that progressively kills
00:18:00
the nerve that connect to your muscles affecting your arms,
00:18:04
legs, speech, breathing in the end for so many paralysis while
00:18:09
your mind is still acute.
00:18:11
It's called ALS.
00:18:13
I will never forget those three letters.
00:18:19
It's on me the second I wake up.
00:18:21
It's not a dream.
00:18:22
It's not a dream.
00:18:25
No. I have one functioning arm.
00:18:30
My dominant side.
00:18:32
Is your right side?
00:18:33
Yeah, my left side is functioning.
00:18:35
My right side is completely...
00:18:38
completely stopped working.
00:18:41
And then your left arm...
00:18:43
Is... fine?
00:18:45
No, it's going.
00:18:47
Yeah, I feel like maybe a...
00:18:50
a couple few more months.
00:18:52
and I won't have my left and either sobering.
00:18:57
- He says he's walking fine, but thinking about his legs.
00:19:01
- Is that what you're worried about next to your leg?
00:19:04
- Yeah.
00:19:06
- Yeah, I'm worried about my legs.
00:19:08
- And always on his mind, his family
00:19:11
with actress Rebecca Gayhart.
00:19:13
The couple weren't separated, but now are close.
00:19:16
Their two daughters are 13 and 15 years old.
00:19:19
He says he is going to keep fighting this disease
00:19:22
for the life he loves every single day.
00:19:25
- I don't think this is the end of my story.
00:19:28
I just don't feel like in my heart,
00:19:30
I don't feel like this is the end of me.
00:19:33
I mean, I really, at the end of the day,
00:19:35
just all I wanna do is spend time with my family
00:19:40
and work a little bit if I can.
00:19:43
- And make sure that you tell them
00:19:46
that you love some.
00:19:51
Every day.
00:19:54
They're loved. They know it.
