00:00:00
of four waves of attacks now this is
00:00:03
almost if the 250 figure is right that's
00:00:05
almost double the size of the attack
00:00:08
that took place in April remember Iran
00:00:10
attacking at that time uh we suspected
00:00:13
that there would be attack but this is
00:00:15
significantly larger Israel has warned
00:00:17
all of its citizens to take all
00:00:19
precautions to try and stay underground
00:00:21
if they can uh we're certainly hearing
00:00:24
the sounds of explosions from Tel Aviv
00:00:26
uh in that feed that is coming from some
00:00:28
of the television cameras there so
00:00:30
clearly terrifying moments of people on
00:00:31
the ground and then eventually we'll
00:00:33
start to talk about what the response is
00:00:35
Israel has been very clear that if Iran
00:00:38
attacks Israel it is going to respond
00:00:41
and the response is going to be very
00:00:42
severe so we just have to wait and see
00:00:45
99% of the missiles that were fired at
00:00:48
Israel back in April were intercepted
00:00:51
this is double the size that's a huge
00:00:53
test of Israel's resources remember
00:00:55
you've got American Service Personnel on
00:00:57
the ground there as well as American
00:00:59
citizens you got the US Embassy and
00:01:01
obviously lotss of other foreign
00:01:02
Nationals as well so this will be a
00:01:04
terrifying night for many people we're
00:01:07
hearing the sounds of explosions again
00:01:08
it's hard at this point to know whether
00:01:10
these are intercepts uh or whether some
00:01:13
of these missiles are actually going
00:01:14
through so to stress we know that this
00:01:16
first wave of attacks is now underway
00:01:19
we're told there could be four and this
00:01:20
first wave is over a 100 ballistic
00:01:23
missiles there could be as many as 250
00:01:25
in total Israel has warned that there
00:01:27
will be a strong response to Iran it's
00:01:30
been planning this uh uh to to how to
00:01:32
retaliate for a long time but especially
00:01:35
that's been ramped up ever since Hassan
00:01:37
nasarella was killed people in this part
00:01:39
of the world here in Lebanon have been
00:01:41
waiting for an Iranian response many
00:01:43
people have been crying out for it
00:01:44
especially in the Shia world there's a
00:01:47
lot of pressure on Iran to try and
00:01:48
respond because it's proxies here in
00:01:50
Lebanon and elsewhere uh certainly Hamas
00:01:53
in Gaza have been under immense pressure
00:01:55
from Israel trying to break this
00:01:57
so-called axis of resistance and this is
00:02:00
the response from Iran but but a huge
00:02:02
gamble by Iran and a very dangerous
00:02:04
night for
00:02:05
Israel and as you mentioned uh prime
00:02:08
minister Benjamin Netanyahu made it very
00:02:10
clear when he was in New York uh just
00:02:12
last week Ian saying if indeed Iran was
00:02:16
to strike that they could absolutely
00:02:18
expect for Israel to strike back we are
00:02:21
following right now if you are just
00:02:22
tuning in ABC News has now learned our
00:02:25
Ian panel confirming uh that Iran has
00:02:28
just launched a retali atory missile
00:02:30
attack targeting Israel our Matt Gutman
00:02:33
now in Tel Aviv uh Matt I understand you
00:02:36
have been able to take cover you are in
00:02:38
a shelter bring us up to date what do
00:02:40
you know at this
00:02:42
moment here about 90 minutes ago the
00:02:45
first alert started to go out on
00:02:46
people's cell phones Nationwide alerting
00:02:49
them to start getting towards sheltered
00:02:51
areas bomb shelters not to congregate
00:02:53
and over the past 15 minutes they have
00:02:55
become much more frequent then we heard
00:02:57
the announcement from the IDF that
00:02:59
Iran's missile attack has begun and a
00:03:02
short time later we got those messages
00:03:04
in our phone evacuate immediately move
00:03:06
as soon as you can to any kind of bomb
00:03:09
shelter um we heard the sirens a short
00:03:11
time after that I'll give you a sense of
00:03:12
where we are it's just a room in this
00:03:14
hotel you can see uh it's got an air
00:03:16
vent as well we're perfectly safe where
00:03:18
we are we have the rest of our team here
00:03:21
on the other side um but this is what
00:03:23
most of Israel looks like right now we
00:03:25
don't know how many missiles we hear 100
00:03:27
it could be more in the coming hours
00:03:30
that remains to be determined uh just as
00:03:32
we were running into the shelter I saw
00:03:34
some of those interceptors go up into
00:03:36
the atmosphere to try to take out those
00:03:39
missiles it is possible that there have
00:03:41
been hits and the IDF has said all day
00:03:44
that they're preparing for this and that
00:03:46
the air defenses are solid they worked
00:03:48
in the past uh in April knocking out 99%
00:03:51
of the missiles drones and cruise
00:03:53
missiles fired from Iran but the Ida
00:03:56
saying it's not hermetic uh we
00:03:58
understand at this point that several
00:03:59
major Israeli military bases in the Tel
00:04:02
Aviv area in in the South were targeted
00:04:05
they were evacuated earlier today uh in
00:04:08
recent hours it was known that that was
00:04:10
likely what Iran is going to Target um
00:04:12
unclear the damage right now we're
00:04:15
inside unable to get uh bulletins but
00:04:17
Israel is obviously bracing for a very
00:04:19
very long night and it happens Kira on
00:04:21
the back of what appears to be a
00:04:23
shooting attack just about a mile from
00:04:25
where we are um two armed men entering a
00:04:28
train we understand it was a terrorist
00:04:29
attack according to police shooting a
00:04:31
number of people several of them have
00:04:33
been critically wounded so a very
00:04:35
jarring night for Israelis here after
00:04:38
those successes in Lebanon over the past
00:04:40
a couple of weeks and the siren still
00:04:42
going on Kira our Matt Gutman there uh
00:04:45
in a shelter in Tel Aviv our Martha
00:04:48
Raditz a chief Global Affairs
00:04:50
correspondent joining us on the phone
00:04:51
now Martha if you could let us know uh
00:04:54
where you are where you are headed and
00:04:56
just your thoughts here this strike
00:04:58
clearly a significant escalation uh that
00:05:01
means a significant amount of risks and
00:05:05
the the looming question of how whyde
00:05:07
this war could
00:05:09
become exactly and I think what the Us
00:05:13
official who I spoke to today the senior
00:05:15
Us official the greatest concern is that
00:05:18
some of those missiles will get through
00:05:20
as we have been reporting in the last
00:05:22
little while 99% of them were
00:05:24
intercepted in April but there is fear
00:05:28
that that will not hold this time and
00:05:31
that indeed would point to a wider War
00:05:34
uh Iran launching perhaps as many as 250
00:05:39
missiles as we've said towards Israel
00:05:41
they are certainly aware of the Iron
00:05:43
Dome and that the US also has defense
00:05:46
mechanisms up as well there is a
00:05:49
possibility some of those missiles will
00:05:51
get through and what kind of damage they
00:05:53
would do uh will really look towards
00:05:56
what kind of response Israel makes Us
00:05:59
official told me it is a 100% certainty
00:06:03
that Israel will respond to this and in
00:06:06
a vigorous way even if those missiles do
00:06:08
not get through but if there are
00:06:10
injuries if people are injured if
00:06:12
infrastructure is taken out if any part
00:06:15
of those air bases is taken out this
00:06:17
will significantly increase this the
00:06:20
chances of a wider War uh and that
00:06:23
response again we don't know when that
00:06:26
response will be but Israel is taking
00:06:28
this slow it also
00:06:30
K they decided not to make a preemptive
00:06:33
strike even Israel even though they knew
00:06:36
these missiles were coming uh Iran
00:06:39
taking that first hit and another thing
00:06:43
we have to remember Kira is we are just
00:06:46
days away from the anniversary of
00:06:48
October 7th when Hamas entered Israel
00:06:51
and conducted that horrific terrorist
00:06:53
attack on Israel uh and this is the
00:06:56
Fallout from all of
00:06:57
that and and just look looking at the
00:07:00
Timeline uh Martha from October 7th 2023
00:07:03
when Hamas
00:07:06
uh took on that horrendous uh attack
00:07:10
killing all those innocent people during
00:07:12
that music festival and then looking at
00:07:15
at a a momentary ceasefire between
00:07:18
Israel and Hamas a month later but since
00:07:21
then the deaths of Hamas leaders uh
00:07:25
commanders uh within Hamas uh other
00:07:28
political leaders throughout other uh
00:07:31
countries and then just in September the
00:07:33
pager explosions that killed Hezbollah
00:07:36
leaders and Lebanon all the way to just
00:07:40
uh last week and hezbollah's Commander
00:07:42
nazala uh Hassan NASA killed in that
00:07:46
Israeli air strike how do you see this
00:07:50
playing out right now as we talk about
00:07:53
Iran expecting to launch 240 to 250
00:07:56
missiles uh in a number of of waves here
00:07:59
four targets they in Israel mad
00:08:02
headquarters three air bases do you
00:08:06
Martha stay with us let's get back to
00:08:08
Matt Gutman he's in that shelter in Tel
00:08:10
Aviv Matt uh bring us up to
00:08:13
date Cara we just actually ran out from
00:08:16
the shelter to see what was going on
00:08:18
outside the sirens had stopped they've
00:08:20
started again so we're going to go back
00:08:22
towards the shelter but we just saw
00:08:23
something incredibly unusual there are
00:08:25
Israeli soldiers fully kitted out
00:08:27
running in the streets looking like they
00:08:29
were looking for something in a bus just
00:08:32
downstairs this country is on tendor
00:08:34
hooks right now it's hard to describe
00:08:36
how intense the feeling is for so many
00:08:38
Israelis who've been running in and out
00:08:39
of these bomb shelters over the past uh
00:08:41
I guess half an hour or so no reports
00:08:44
yet about direct hits we don't know
00:08:47
about damage but again as the IDF has
00:08:49
been saying we're just going to round
00:08:50
this corner um their missile defense
00:08:53
system as robust as it is also developed
00:08:56
with take the other one also developed
00:08:58
with the United States stes does not
00:09:00
provide a hermetic seal against these
00:09:02
ballistic missiles coming from Iran so
00:09:05
it's presumed that some of them might
00:09:06
get through um we don't know how long
00:09:09
this is going to be going on Martha
00:09:11
reported earlier that a very large
00:09:12
number of missiles is inbound towards
00:09:15
Israel the Israeli government of course
00:09:17
has said it will retaliate we've seen
00:09:20
what they've been able to do in Lebanon
00:09:22
against his Bala over the past couple of
00:09:24
weeks the intelligence apparatus is
00:09:27
working very well I would say that their
00:09:29
success according to them has been
00:09:31
unprecedented it's unclear what they
00:09:33
might have in store for Iran but what
00:09:36
has been quite obvious over the past
00:09:38
weeks and months is that they have been
00:09:40
able to infiltrate the Iranian
00:09:42
intelligence system and the government
00:09:43
as well so they know what the vulnerable
00:09:45
points are we don't know when the
00:09:47
retaliation might come it might not be
00:09:49
immediate but again right now everybody
00:09:51
in Israel continues to brace and hunker
00:09:53
down in their bomb shelters across this
00:09:56
country we don't even know the scope of
00:09:58
the missile launches at this point don't
00:10:00
know how many are intercepted but
00:10:02
clearly this is a more significant and
00:10:04
larger barrage than we saw in April Iran
00:10:07
is trying to clearly send a message
00:10:10
after its main proxy Hezbollah in
00:10:11
Lebanon has been nearly decimated by
00:10:14
Israel's attacks over the past couple of
00:10:16
weeks G you know we talk about the last
00:10:19
year we're coming up on on marking
00:10:22
October 7th uh year since Hamas attacked
00:10:24
Israel let me ask you this as well as
00:10:27
you are there in Tel Aviv uh Matt do you
00:10:31
believe there's also a significance to
00:10:33
striking so close to a high holiday I
00:10:36
mean Jewish New Year starts its Sundown
00:10:40
tomorrow I think there is Kira I think
00:10:43
Jewish New Year starts tomorrow it is
00:10:44
the biggest holiday in Israel it's sort
00:10:47
of like Christmas and New Year's in one
00:10:49
here it's followed by y kapor uh a few
00:10:52
days later which is the day of atonement
00:10:54
in Israel and that is the anniversary on
00:10:56
the Jewish calendar of the October 7th
00:10:58
attack so there might
00:10:59
some symbolism there as well we don't
00:11:01
exactly know what is in the mind of the
00:11:03
Iranian regime right now we do know that
00:11:05
they feel humiliated after the round of
00:11:08
attacks um by Israel on Iranian assets
00:11:11
across the Middle East uh in Yemen we
00:11:14
saw the houthis being barage at the Huda
00:11:16
Port uh blown up Hezbollah in um Lebanon
00:11:21
has been attacked severely um they are
00:11:23
in complete disarray and Iran clearly
00:11:25
felt like it needed some sort of
00:11:27
response and it's unclear this will be
00:11:29
the final response what does seem
00:11:31
apparent though is that they broadcast
00:11:33
that they were targeting military bases
00:11:36
military installations and that the
00:11:38
attacks are coming later at night means
00:11:41
there's probably less traffic it seems
00:11:43
that they are also trying to mitigate
00:11:44
possible civilian casualties seems we
00:11:47
don't know that for sure but that was
00:11:48
the motus operandi in the previous
00:11:50
attack as well which came overnight um
00:11:52
unclear exactly what is in the mind of
00:11:54
Iran but clearly they are trying to send
00:11:57
a message to Israel and the next step is
00:11:59
going to be a very difficult one but
00:12:01
just to go back to October 7th Kira you
00:12:03
mentioned the symbolism there Israel was
00:12:05
just starting to recover from the
00:12:08
horrors of October 7th and the
00:12:10
humiliation that its own intelligence
00:12:12
system and its own military suffered at
00:12:14
the hands of Hamas that surprise attack
00:12:16
that left over 12200 Israelis dead and
00:12:20
they had just started to feel like
00:12:21
they've regained traction um and with
00:12:24
what happened in Lebanon and the new
00:12:26
assault there the ability to clear a
00:12:28
part of Southern Lebanon without Israeli
00:12:30
casualties so far um so this is still
00:12:33
rolling and as Martha warned there is a
00:12:35
significant concern here of a greater
00:12:37
Regional War breaking out because of the
00:12:39
attacks tonight hereira and Martha let
00:12:42
me take it to you as we look at uh the
00:12:45
two waves that are supposed to take uh
00:12:48
place here uh and the targets including
00:12:52
uh air bases in addition to Massad
00:12:55
headquarters do we think that there are
00:12:57
U us Personnel at any of those air bases
00:13:00
Martha I I am told there are us
00:13:03
Personnel at some of those bases in
00:13:05
Israel and again the Defense Forces are
00:13:08
up as as solid as they possibly can be I
00:13:13
think what you have seen and Matt
00:13:14
mentioned this as well the Intelligence
00:13:17
on Hezbollah has been remarkable the
00:13:19
Israelis have really concentrated on
00:13:21
that since
00:13:24
2006 and have significantly harmed the
00:13:27
Hezbollah structure I'm just back from
00:13:30
Israel I arrived in Israel the day those
00:13:32
P those pagers went off in Lebanon it's
00:13:35
quite extraordinary I'm actually on a
00:13:36
train to New York City right now and I
00:13:38
am still getting those alerts from Tel
00:13:40
Aviv uh on an app on my phone to take
00:13:43
cover take cover as these missiles
00:13:45
approach Tel Aviv and other places
00:13:48
around Israel again this is expected
00:13:51
according to a senior official to come
00:13:53
in waves so you may see dozens and
00:13:56
dozens or perhaps a hundred in this
00:13:57
first wave and then more
00:13:59
after that and they will assess the
00:14:01
damage as soon as they possibly can the
00:14:05
Israelis and to calibrate their response
00:14:07
I am told by a senior official that one
00:14:09
of the responses will be on energy
00:14:11
structure in Iran they will certainly
00:14:14
try to cause damage to Iran SK and
00:14:18
hopefully back
00:14:19
off Steve ganard I want to bring you in
00:14:22
as our ABC knows a consultant uh with
00:14:25
military and intelligence background as
00:14:28
you are watching what's happening right
00:14:30
now clearly we are entering a new phase
00:14:33
of this conflict uh asking Martha about
00:14:37
us Personnel at some of these air bases
00:14:39
apparently a part of the targets that
00:14:41
Iran wants to hit um what would it take
00:14:46
in this scenario right now for the US to
00:14:50
take a bigger role would it mean are US
00:14:55
forces uh in any way shape or form uh
00:14:58
being being hurt within this conflict
00:15:01
how do you see the US playing a bigger
00:15:03
role here if at
00:15:05
all yeah sure I think that the US is
00:15:08
doing what they did in April right now
00:15:10
uh we'll see what happens after the
00:15:11
attack is over but remember we have uh
00:15:14
US Navy ships offshore of Israel that
00:15:17
have the ability to bring down Iranian
00:15:19
ballistic missiles we also have some of
00:15:21
that ability in Jordan uh if any of
00:15:23
these attacks are with cruise missiles
00:15:26
there are us squadrons who are based in
00:15:28
Jordan who were key instrumental last
00:15:31
time in stopping some of those attacks
00:15:33
back in April uh we also have ships in
00:15:36
the Red Sea so to some degree uh the US
00:15:38
has said that they will help defend uh
00:15:41
Israel so we just don't know how much
00:15:43
involvement uh that that will be now
00:15:45
just watching the video uh I think that
00:15:48
what Matt and Ian and Martha have been
00:15:50
talking about about this uh concern
00:15:52
about the incoming uh Iranian missiles
00:15:55
overwhelming Israeli defenses may be
00:15:58
coming to pass unconfirmed but it does
00:16:00
look like there are some impacts around
00:16:02
uh Tel Aviv uh we'll have to wait to uh
00:16:05
to confirm that but the number of
00:16:07
missiles incoming has always been the
00:16:09
concern there are three layers of
00:16:12
Defense within Israel we all know about
00:16:13
the Iron Dome which is actually lower
00:16:15
altitude there's a midlevel kind of
00:16:17
capability called David slang and then
00:16:19
the very high altitude that will
00:16:21
actually intercept these Iranian
00:16:23
ballistic missiles in outer space is
00:16:25
called Arrow so it's a layer defense but
00:16:28
again so many um incoming missiles that
00:16:31
we do have to be concerned about the
00:16:33
threat of uh overwhelming and saturating
00:16:36
Israeli
00:16:37
defenses Mary Bruce let's take it to you
00:16:40
at the White House our chief White House
00:16:43
correspondent uh I see that the
00:16:45
president uh is uh putting out um
00:16:49
messages on Twitter now about 17 minutes
00:16:52
ago saying that this morning uh he and
00:16:55
the vice president convened uh with our
00:16:59
National Security team to discuss
00:17:00
Iranian plans to launch an imminent
00:17:02
missile attack against Israel we
00:17:04
discussed how the United States is
00:17:05
prepared to help Israel defend against
00:17:08
these attacks and protect American
00:17:10
Personnel in the region what more do we
00:17:12
know
00:17:13
Mary well we certainly know that the
00:17:15
White House and the president are
00:17:16
monitoring all of this extremely closely
00:17:19
the president and the vice president
00:17:20
they are convening that meeting as you
00:17:22
mentioned with the National Security
00:17:23
team at the White House earlier this
00:17:25
morning and we learned from a senior
00:17:27
White House official this morning that
00:17:29
the US is actively supporting defensive
00:17:31
preparations to defend Israel against
00:17:33
this bar attack and then that key line
00:17:37
the the White House official saying a
00:17:38
direct military attack from Iran against
00:17:40
Israel will carry severe consequences
00:17:43
for Iran of course lots of questions now
00:17:45
about what that means uh we have of
00:17:48
course seen the president in recent days
00:17:50
speak out forcefully on this you know
00:17:53
adamant that an allout war in the Middle
00:17:55
East has to be avoided the big question
00:17:57
is how is you can continue to see the
00:18:00
escalation continue
00:18:02
Kira Mary thank you let's take it back
00:18:04
to our Ian panel in Beirut in bring us
00:18:08
up to date uh on what is happening there
00:18:10
what you're hearing
00:18:13
now yeah K I mean look we've been
00:18:15
talking for ages about the risks of
00:18:17
escalation well I think we can just say
00:18:19
this has escalated and whether anyone
00:18:22
can put a lid on it is an open question
00:18:24
what we're seeing right now is you can't
00:18:26
see it clearly on the camera is the red
00:18:27
dots of tracer fire going into the sky
00:18:30
from the southern suburbs this is Dua
00:18:32
this is Hezbollah stronghold the area
00:18:34
that's been repeatedly hammered by the
00:18:36
Israelis over the last couple of weeks
00:18:38
and people are out on the streets
00:18:39
celebrating remember Iran set up this
00:18:42
so-called axis of resistance it was
00:18:44
Hamas it was Hezbollah other groups as
00:18:47
well especially uh in Iraq some of the
00:18:49
Shia militias which are pro-iranian as
00:18:51
well and uh we're getting reports again
00:18:53
not verified in any way that perhaps
00:18:55
there's been some incident near an air
00:18:57
base uh in Iraq we say saw an attempted
00:19:00
attack yesterday by Iranian pro-iranian
00:19:02
militias on a base that believed to
00:19:05
house US forces so for many people
00:19:08
certainly on this side of the Border
00:19:10
this will give them sucker they feel
00:19:12
that they will be emboldened uh by
00:19:14
what's happening now in Israel that
00:19:16
they're being supported Iran basically
00:19:18
set up Hezbollah um and and it has been
00:19:21
the major thorn in Israel side other
00:19:23
than Iran itself uh as Matt said they've
00:19:26
been severely weakened uh over the last
00:19:29
few few weeks with the pager attacks
00:19:31
then the death of nasala and these
00:19:33
targeted assassinations almost its
00:19:34
entire leadership has has basically been
00:19:38
erased so hezb has been all at Sea we
00:19:40
know that Israel has now moved across
00:19:42
the border here so just step back and
00:19:44
think about this for a moment you
00:19:46
mentioned this yourself what began as
00:19:48
this terrible attack inside Israel on
00:19:50
the kibot Sim at the music festival then
00:19:53
grew to that attack in Gaza then we saw
00:19:56
it stretch to the West Bank Hezbollah
00:19:58
joined that uh that that attack on
00:20:01
Israeli forces pretty much for the last
00:20:03
year and now Israel has responded in
00:20:05
force you know we're talking about 100
00:20:08
missiles here I mean Lebanon has
00:20:10
received thousands uh of attacks over
00:20:13
the last week or so uh parts of this
00:20:15
country totally decimated over a million
00:20:17
around a million people have been forced
00:20:19
on their homes and the casualties are
00:20:21
something like 1,600 so again many
00:20:25
people certainly here who are pro
00:20:26
Hezbollah will say this is is payback
00:20:29
for Israel and there will be many other
00:20:31
people in Iraq as well and in Syria uh
00:20:34
and probably in Yemen who will also
00:20:36
share that view and they will feel
00:20:38
emboldened by this uh so attacks in the
00:20:41
Red Sea are possible attacks on us
00:20:43
interests in Iraq are possible further
00:20:45
fire from Hezbollah into Israel uh you
00:20:48
know this this fear that this could
00:20:50
develop into a wider conflict it's kind
00:20:52
of happening it's just whether when
00:20:55
Israel responds which it will do to the
00:20:57
Iranian attack whether a lid can be put
00:20:59
on it as happened after April in some
00:21:02
senses it was calibrated I'm not
00:21:04
convinced that this looks calibrated in
00:21:06
the same way and especially given the
00:21:08
Israeli warnings so we really could be
00:21:10
about to see the start of something much
00:21:12
bigger I don't want to scare Monga but
00:21:14
the risks now when you start having
00:21:16
missiles flying into Israel uh attacks
00:21:19
here attacks in Iran attacks in Iraq uh
00:21:22
then things start to look potentially
00:21:24
out of
00:21:25
control Ian let's take it from you right
00:21:27
back to our Matt Gutman who is out of
00:21:29
the shelter now there in Tel Aviv he is
00:21:31
out on the balcony uh just in light of
00:21:34
what Ian just said uh Matt the question
00:21:37
remains uh as phase one here on behalf
00:21:41
of Iran has now taken place how will
00:21:44
Israel respond how long will Israel wait
00:21:48
what is prime minister Benjamin
00:21:50
Netanyahu doing at this
00:21:53
moment I can tell you what he's been
00:21:54
doing over the past 15 20 years Kira and
00:21:58
that is selecting Targets this is
00:21:59
something that Israeli intelligence has
00:22:01
been talking about for a long time they
00:22:04
know where they want to hit in Iran they
00:22:06
have been thinking about this they have
00:22:08
been accumulating intelligence through
00:22:10
analysts through agents on the ground
00:22:13
for many years they have been prepared
00:22:15
for this they have both the defensive
00:22:17
capabilities to knock those missiles out
00:22:19
of the sky that are incoming and
00:22:21
offensive capabilities uh in terms of
00:22:23
its Air Force and their own missiles
00:22:26
that are capable of hitting Iran what
00:22:28
they select how hard they intend to go
00:22:31
remains obviously the biggest question
00:22:33
at this point I think a lot of it
00:22:34
depends on the damage we see here in the
00:22:37
coming hours Kira um we're being told by
00:22:40
security sources that the IDF is about
00:22:42
to put out uh the latest bullettin about
00:22:45
possible damage some of those missiles
00:22:47
or parts of them have come through we
00:22:49
don't know if there are any casualties
00:22:51
yet but I'm told that they're going to
00:22:53
inform Us in the coming minutes of what
00:22:55
happened I don't think from my
00:22:57
understanding from just speaking to a
00:22:58
military source that there's any severe
00:23:00
damage at that point and that will
00:23:02
certainly calibrate the kind of response
00:23:04
that we're going to see from Israel just
00:23:05
as we got out to this balcony again we
00:23:08
heard additional booms of those
00:23:09
interceptors now all of this aerial
00:23:12
Warfare K is happening tens of thousands
00:23:14
of feet in the air and those Booms that
00:23:16
we hear are delayed by seconds the
00:23:19
intercepts happening way out uh probably
00:23:22
15 mi from where we are I saw a couple
00:23:24
of them go out just before we ran into
00:23:26
the shelter now when we talk about those
00:23:28
ballistic missiles you know we tend to
00:23:30
think of rockets but these are Big
00:23:32
they're almost as long as a bus and I
00:23:34
saw one of the missiles that landed in
00:23:36
April and it was about 38 ft long minus
00:23:39
the engine and minus the cone that
00:23:41
housed the actual uh Warhead so just the
00:23:45
fuel tank itself was 38 ft so these are
00:23:48
massive weapons when they are launched
00:23:50
and when they fall and even parts of
00:23:51
them fall they can cause some pretty
00:23:53
catastrophic damage now we understand
00:23:55
that Israel's main military bases in the
00:23:57
Tel Aviv area the one that houses its
00:24:00
intelligence offices the Mad have been
00:24:02
evacuated Israel's headquarters at least
00:24:04
partially evacuated other bases
00:24:07
evacuated they knew this was coming they
00:24:09
tried to get their people out of the way
00:24:10
but I want to show you something else
00:24:12
that's happening right now people are
00:24:13
kind of back on the roads uh you see
00:24:15
police but there is some traffic people
00:24:17
moving to and fro in the ls between
00:24:20
these Sirens we don't know if there's
00:24:22
another wave it's being reported that
00:24:24
there have been well over a 100 maybe
00:24:27
50% more than that missiles fired at
00:24:30
this point um towards the center of
00:24:32
Israel and possibly the South everybody
00:24:34
here is bracing for additional missiles
00:24:36
I think certainly before talking about
00:24:38
what's next although I think what is
00:24:40
clear Kira is that there is going to be
00:24:42
a next question is does it happen in
00:24:43
Lebanon does it happen Direct on Iran um
00:24:47
it's unclear one more thing about the
00:24:48
missiles if you'll indulge me Iran
00:24:50
learned from April when it launched 300
00:24:54
uh cruise missiles and drones and
00:24:56
missiles the cruise missiles and drones
00:24:58
were all intercepted the only thing they
00:25:00
got through were those ballistic
00:25:02
missiles that's a siren that's not
00:25:04
related to us that's a police siren uh
00:25:06
so the only B missiles that got through
00:25:08
were the ballistic kind those bus-sized
00:25:10
missiles that's why they only fired
00:25:12
those on this round that's my assumption
00:25:14
at least um and it does appear that some
00:25:16
have managed to evade Israel's uh aerial
00:25:19
defense array Kira so let's put this in
00:25:22
perspective then Matt as you just
00:25:24
described uh the the ballistic missile
00:25:27
in DET detail um its capability uh its
00:25:31
size the kind of Destruction it can
00:25:33
leave behind if we look back to Iran
00:25:36
launching what it was about 120
00:25:39
ballistic missiles and dozens of cruise
00:25:41
missiles uh and hundreds of drones back
00:25:44
in April you were saying 99% of those
00:25:47
were intercepted our Martha radit also
00:25:50
telling that telling us that as well now
00:25:52
Iran expected to carry out two waves
00:25:55
here and launch 240 to 200 50 missiles
00:26:00
uh aiming at four targets there in
00:26:03
Israel including mad headquarters and
00:26:05
three air bases let's talk about
00:26:08
although we want to remind folks when
00:26:11
Iran launched those missiles last time
00:26:13
around and 99% of them were intercepted
00:26:17
we are talking about double this time
00:26:20
around and two
00:26:24
waves yeah uh the potential for damage
00:26:27
is much more significant the biggest
00:26:29
concern is the swarming Factor right if
00:26:32
they fire a lot of them at once Israel's
00:26:34
air defenses are incapable of handling
00:26:37
of filtering through all of the missiles
00:26:39
had they fired maybe 200 at once it
00:26:41
would have been an even bigger threat
00:26:43
but still salvos of several dozen at a
00:26:46
time offers a very complex uh uh
00:26:49
algorithm for the air defenses to try to
00:26:52
knock down so there's a lot of uh
00:26:54
deconfliction that happens with those
00:26:56
missiles and you talked about the the
00:26:57
missile itself and the Damage that they
00:27:00
can cause it really depends on what is
00:27:02
loaded in the Warhead right it can be a
00:27:05
chemical or biological weapon it can
00:27:06
have a significant amount of um of
00:27:10
ammunition of uh explosives and that
00:27:13
also determines how far these missiles
00:27:14
go so if you want them to go farther you
00:27:16
load them with less explosives um and
00:27:19
that's what we don't know yet what was
00:27:21
on these things we don't think that
00:27:22
there's any threat of chemical
00:27:24
biological or Atomic Warfare at all at
00:27:26
this point but how much explosives
00:27:28
loaded on them how far did they go and
00:27:30
what specific targets did they hit we
00:27:32
know that some pieces of those missiles
00:27:35
have hit Israel we don't know where and
00:27:38
what kind of damage and whether there
00:27:39
were casualties at this point but again
00:27:42
loaded fully with a lot of explosives of
00:27:44
high-end explosives these kinds of
00:27:46
missiles can take out a small apartment
00:27:48
building as Ian and I and Martha have
00:27:50
seen in Ukraine they can do a lot of
00:27:52
damage if there is Direct Hit Kira all
00:27:56
right let's take it to you Steve uh dig
00:27:58
a Little Deeper here on the capability
00:28:00
of of these missiles uh this is uh
00:28:03
absolutely your Forte your thoughts uh
00:28:07
on the kind of damage uh that we could
00:28:09
see here uh as uh we are awaiting now a
00:28:13
second wave uh of uh of missile attacks
00:28:16
on behalf of
00:28:18
Iran yeah K I think the important Point
00:28:21
here is that a ballistic missile um
00:28:24
carries between about 1,000 and 2,000 lb
00:28:26
of high explosive if that is in fact the
00:28:29
the payload but the other part of this
00:28:31
is is is coming in from outer space so
00:28:33
it's probably going several mock almost
00:28:36
5 six seven by the time it re-enters the
00:28:39
atmosphere uh and then that uh that
00:28:42
momentum of all that explosive is what
00:28:44
uh creates such damage when they do
00:28:46
impact here but again the Israelis have
00:28:49
the ability to knock these kinds of
00:28:50
missiles down it just depends on how
00:28:52
many are incoming uh they're very
00:28:55
expensive to have a ballistic missile uh
00:28:57
defense
00:28:58
uh and so the numbers are limited uh so
00:29:01
we'll see how many gotten through they
00:29:03
also have the ability to look and see
00:29:05
where the impact would be um anticipated
00:29:08
so if a ballistic missile was going to
00:29:10
land in what they knew was an
00:29:12
unpopulated area the computer within the
00:29:15
firing unit would say up I'm not going
00:29:17
after that one because I know it's going
00:29:18
to land harmlessly so they have the
00:29:20
ability to have that discrimination
00:29:22
about whether the the missile is going
00:29:24
to have a uh an impact U either directly
00:29:27
or near a an air base I think K it's
00:29:31
very important to understand here that
00:29:33
this is a capability that's very
00:29:34
expensive it's very complex uh the
00:29:36
Israelis have it because a lot of it has
00:29:39
been co-developed with the US the
00:29:41
Iranians have nothing so when the
00:29:43
Israeli come to retaliate and however
00:29:46
they do they will be have the Iranians
00:29:48
will have no defense against this kind
00:29:50
of attack Israel has all sorts of types
00:29:53
of uh missiles the same Munitions that
00:29:55
the Iranians have even better and so
00:29:58
when the retali retaliatory attack by
00:30:01
Israel onto Iran comes it will be a very
00:30:04
very different uh outcome because the
00:30:06
Iranians just do not have the kinds of
00:30:08
defensive capabilities that the Israelis
00:30:11
do let me follow up with that uh Steve
00:30:14
now that Hamas and Hezbollah have
00:30:16
largely had their leadership and ability
00:30:18
to communicate uh eliminated uh is Iran
00:30:23
in this fight against Israel alone
00:30:29
uh well most of their proxies have been
00:30:31
degraded to the point that they're that
00:30:32
they're truly ineffective the houthis uh
00:30:34
have taken a a punch in the nose from
00:30:36
the Israelis that have quieted them for
00:30:38
the past couple days we know what's
00:30:40
going on in Gaza with Hamas we know
00:30:42
what's going on in Lebanon with
00:30:43
Hezbollah the uh the Shia militias
00:30:46
within Iraq have been quite quiet and so
00:30:49
what undoubtedly happened here is Iran
00:30:51
felt that they had been humiliated and
00:30:53
they had to respond in some way knowing
00:30:55
that Israel was going to come back and
00:30:56
take retribution so Iranians are
00:30:59
probably preparing for that I think
00:31:01
what's interesting here is what Martha
00:31:03
alluded to and that is that the Israelis
00:31:05
have discussed that this retribution
00:31:07
will be against economic targets when
00:31:09
you hear that and you hear it in
00:31:11
reference to Iran think oil so the life
00:31:15
flood of the Iranian economy the life
00:31:16
blood of the Iranian government of the
00:31:18
regime is based on oil money who's the
00:31:21
biggest consumer of that oil China so
00:31:24
we're looking to this is going to become
00:31:27
a a global issue here if the Israelis do
00:31:29
in fact go after places like car Island
00:31:32
which is the major oil trans trans
00:31:34
shipment point for runan oil uh or
00:31:36
someplace around the straight of hor
00:31:39
where all of that oil uh not just from
00:31:41
Iran but from all the Gulf States
00:31:43
Transit so uh keep an eye on oil markets
00:31:45
here because uh they don't like they
00:31:48
don't like uh things to be uh unsettled
00:31:50
and if they can't get the uh oil that
00:31:53
comes from the Persian Gulf countries
00:31:54
out uh of the Persian Gulf countries
00:31:56
through the shipborne means then uh this
00:31:58
is going to have a global effect on
00:32:00
economies as well Steve ganard thank you
00:32:03
and if you are just tuning in right now
00:32:05
you are watching Breaking News here on
00:32:08
ABC Iran firing missiles uh into uh
00:32:13
Israel at this hour residents told to
00:32:17
remain close to bomb shelters as you can
00:32:19
hear the Air Raids and the sirens the
00:32:21
air raid sirens sounding across the
00:32:23
country right now and as we are are
00:32:26
watching these live pictures
00:32:28
uh and there in Tel Aviv is our Matt
00:32:30
Gutman also our Ian panel in Beirut our
00:32:33
Steve ganard also with us uh from the
00:32:36
military and security side of things as
00:32:39
we watch this overseas uh there are
00:32:42
concerns here at home uh en enhanced
00:32:45
security already taking place we know in
00:32:48
New York City our Aaron kerski has been
00:32:50
talking with his sources uh here back in
00:32:52
the US what do we know uh Erin uh as
00:32:55
soon as uh
00:32:58
it was uh announced uh that indeed uh
00:33:01
Iran uh has started its two-wave attack
00:33:05
here the first one already uh in order
00:33:08
the second one we are waiting uh four
00:33:11
Targets in Israel now of
00:33:13
concern what it what are the domestic
00:33:16
concerns now particularly in New York as
00:33:18
you are talking with law enforcement at
00:33:20
this
00:33:25
hour Jewish High holidays Kira and law
00:33:28
enforcement officials had been
00:33:29
monitoring developments in the mid East
00:33:32
for this very kind of retaliatory attack
00:33:34
that now appears to be taking place
00:33:36
across the skies of of Israel so far we
00:33:39
have heard of no specific threats to the
00:33:42
US Homeland law enforcement has been
00:33:45
anticipating something like this and
00:33:47
deploying to sensitive Jewish locations
00:33:50
in advance of the high holy days and in
00:33:52
advance of the October 7th anniversary K
00:33:56
it's important to say the nyp is meeting
00:33:58
right now to decide whether they need to
00:34:00
do any additional deployments around New
00:34:03
York City but they have been on this
00:34:05
kind of alert level for weeks now
00:34:08
because of what's been happening
00:34:10
overseas and the concerns that it brings
00:34:13
uh at home in particular they've been
00:34:15
paying attention to what Matt gutman's
00:34:17
been reporting about uh some kind of an
00:34:19
attack with a number of casualties uh
00:34:21
coming outside of a a subway system and
00:34:24
maybe onto a bus so the the police here
00:34:27
in this country are paying particular
00:34:29
attention for any kind of copycats cira
00:34:32
Steve ganard let me take that to you uh
00:34:35
firsthand experience uh if we think of
00:34:39
attacks that have happened uh across the
00:34:42
the country uh there always is a fear
00:34:44
back here at home uh that that citizens
00:34:48
of the United States will be targeted as
00:34:50
well um since the Hamas attacks in
00:34:54
Israel uh we have been on high alert
00:34:56
here in the United States over the past
00:34:58
year uh your thoughts as New York is
00:35:01
already responding uh with regard to
00:35:04
security could we start to see this uh
00:35:07
say at synagogues across the us as Aaron
00:35:10
mentions the high holiday we're coming
00:35:12
up on one year since the October 7th
00:35:15
attack and now Iran launching one of
00:35:18
what we are told will be two waves of
00:35:20
attacks into
00:35:23
Israel yeah K I think you know time
00:35:25
times have changed and um and the number
00:35:28
of um of terrorist groups that Were
00:35:31
Striking around the world uh this kind
00:35:33
of global uh Global effort uh has has
00:35:36
diminished over time and really what
00:35:37
we're seeing now is this is Israel
00:35:40
against Iran and so in the past the
00:35:42
Iranians have been uh supportive of
00:35:44
attacks against US troops with their KS
00:35:46
force and their irgc uh but they also
00:35:49
know that the that President Biden has
00:35:51
put them on on notice that if they come
00:35:54
after the US that the US will come back
00:35:57
at them
00:35:58
so the Iranians had benefited in the
00:36:00
past of having these proxies these
00:36:01
cutouts these um you know look at look
00:36:04
at look at um Hamas it's a Sunni
00:36:07
organization supporting a Shia State and
00:36:10
so it's the enemy of my enemy uh makes
00:36:12
strange bed fellows but it doesn't mean
00:36:15
that the Iranians have wide um networks
00:36:18
that are going to be capable or willing
00:36:20
to make attacks directly within the US
00:36:22
Homeland uh or on US forces doesn't mean
00:36:25
something like that won't happen it's
00:36:27
just less likely here now that this is
00:36:29
sort of uh a direct confrontation with
00:36:32
the Iranian regime rather than a broader
00:36:35
um a broader uh uh Islamic effort
00:36:38
against uh uh against Western targets
00:36:40
that we had seen in the past and the
00:36:43
question uh remains as we continue to
00:36:45
hear the air raid sirens what exactly is
00:36:48
Israel going to do next AI mamed former
00:36:52
Israeli intelligence analyst on the
00:36:54
phone with me now obious you are
00:36:56
watching uh the these uh live pictures
00:36:59
uh and following uh now what Iran says
00:37:03
is or what Israel has now confirmed as
00:37:06
Iran firing these missiles uh into
00:37:08
Israel uh residents told to shelter in
00:37:11
place how do you see this
00:37:15
unfolding well Kira thank you for having
00:37:17
me I think that we should expect a
00:37:19
massive Israeli retaliation in a volume
00:37:21
in scale that the mola regime inan has
00:37:23
not experienced yet the Mula regime has
00:37:26
conducted sort of an act of Despair
00:37:28
trying to stop the avalan of its proxies
00:37:31
following the uh major blows that hisbah
00:37:34
the major proxy of the Iranian sustained
00:37:35
in the last couple of weeks it may be
00:37:38
counterproductive because the Israeli
00:37:41
expected counter retaliation to be
00:37:43
attack on Israel may result in a very TI
00:37:46
situation for Thea
00:37:52
regim I think we lost contact with AI we
00:37:55
will try to bring him back into the
00:37:56
conversation Ian panel let me take it
00:37:58
back to you in Beirut are we hearing
00:38:00
anything on behalf of
00:38:04
Iran yeah in fact we've had a couple of
00:38:06
statements uh in the last hour or so
00:38:08
first of all the Iranians uh released
00:38:10
still images photos of some of those
00:38:13
missiles being launched they were sent
00:38:14
to a semi official state uh news agency
00:38:18
first statement comes from the Iranian
00:38:20
revolutionary guard command it says that
00:38:22
the operation was conducted based on a
00:38:24
decision made in the Supreme National
00:38:26
Security Council uh and with the support
00:38:28
of the army um it says that the attacks
00:38:31
were partly in retaliation uh for the
00:38:34
assassination of Ismael hania in Teran
00:38:37
you remember that happened earlier this
00:38:38
year he of course was the leader of
00:38:40
Hamas as well as Hassan nasala who of
00:38:43
course was the leader of Hezbollah it
00:38:45
says that the order was given by the
00:38:48
Supreme Leader Ayatollah ham um also a
00:38:51
statement from the Iranian Mission this
00:38:54
is at the United Nations where you are
00:38:55
in New York saying Iran's legal rational
00:38:58
and legitimate response to the terrorist
00:39:00
acts of the Zionist regime this is what
00:39:02
the Iranians say has been duly carried
00:39:04
out they then go on to warn Israel
00:39:07
should uh Israel uh carry out any kind
00:39:10
of response or commit further acts of
00:39:12
malevolence a subsequence and crushing
00:39:14
response will ensue uh they're also
00:39:17
warning other countries who are allied
00:39:18
with Israel uh to not side with them and
00:39:21
to distance themselves so so they're
00:39:23
certainly feeling very emboldened by
00:39:25
this uh you know we have colleagues in
00:39:27
Iraq right now colleagues in Jordan and
00:39:29
they're all seeing the same thing
00:39:31
they're seeing these missiles flying
00:39:33
over this cuts to a lot of the divisions
00:39:35
throughout this region between Shia and
00:39:37
sunny world and it forces people to pick
00:39:40
sides and that's why it's also I think
00:39:42
kind of very dangerous situation Iran
00:39:45
now warning Israel not to respond Israel
00:39:48
almost certainly will respond so does
00:39:51
that then lead to a ratcheting up which
00:39:53
is the very thing that President Biden
00:39:55
has been a pains to say repeatedly
00:39:57
uh he wants to avoid this is what
00:39:59
American diplomacy has been directed
00:40:01
towards this is why Anthony blink's been
00:40:03
constantly shuttling backwards and fors
00:40:05
to try and calm the mood but but frankly
00:40:08
that diplomacy has failed uh calmer
00:40:11
voices have not prevailed and certainly
00:40:13
right now we're looking at a devastating
00:40:15
night for Israel here in Lebanon the
00:40:17
attacks continue uh nearly a million
00:40:19
people forced on their homes this has
00:40:20
been a terrible two weeks for Lebanon
00:40:22
the situation we know in Gaza has been
00:40:25
absolutely awful uh you've also got the
00:40:27
the West Bank and now the possibility
00:40:29
that it then spreads to Iran so I think
00:40:31
we're in a very very dangerous moment
00:40:34
for the Middle East and it will affect
00:40:36
America it will affect Europe and most
00:40:38
of all it's going to affect the people
00:40:40
who live here who don't really get a say
00:40:42
in the decisions of their political and
00:40:44
Military Masters K Ian thank you let's
00:40:48
take it back to you AI um playing off
00:40:51
exactly uh what what Ian panel is
00:40:53
talking about here and that is what
00:40:55
would this retaliation look like you say
00:40:58
it will be massive if we think back to
00:41:01
July when hamas's political leader was
00:41:04
taken out by an Israeli drone in tan uh
00:41:09
in country right there in Iran what what
00:41:12
does that say about about Israel its
00:41:15
capabilities and what it's willing to do
00:41:18
uh within what you describe as a massive
00:41:21
Israeli retaliation how deep into Iran
00:41:24
will Israel go and how will they do it
00:41:28
AI well K as you may recall the previous
00:41:31
attack IR attacked Israel in April 1314
00:41:34
there was a symbolic Israeli retaliation
00:41:37
reportedly Israeli jets are targeted a
00:41:40
specific location next to um deep in the
00:41:44
area of Iran and the area of nans which
00:41:48
is one of the major facilities so in the
00:41:51
last couple of months since then we have
00:41:53
witnessed more than time the ability of
00:41:55
Israel to strike hards thousands of
00:41:58
miles away from from the state of Israel
00:42:00
the most recent attack was on the Huda
00:42:04
port in Yemen and and other location in
00:42:06
Yemen some 1200 miles away um from
00:42:10
Israel so in that regard we do have some
00:42:12
good Clips sort of thinking
00:42:14
understanding what Israel can can do and
00:42:16
I would expect that there will be maybe
00:42:18
a combined Israel
00:42:21
mation basically but as I said before I
00:42:23
would expect a massive Israeli
00:42:25
retaliation
00:42:28
and how soon do you see that happening
00:42:30
AI what exactly is prime minister
00:42:33
Netanyahu waiting for here what is he
00:42:36
watching what is he talking about uh
00:42:39
with his his military leaders how how is
00:42:42
he plotting uh his retaliation at this
00:42:45
moment I think that the retaliation is
00:42:48
imminent um we should expect it in a
00:42:50
very short period of time I don't think
00:42:52
this is time something that is going to
00:42:55
continue for a long period of time and I
00:42:57
think it will happen
00:43:00
soon and and at what point does
00:43:03
Netanyahu pull back how far does he go
00:43:07
how deep does this go how long does this
00:43:09
go
00:43:10
AI well look we have to look at the
00:43:12
wider context Israel has been threatened
00:43:14
and other station other states in the
00:43:16
region has been threatened by Iran and
00:43:18
their proxies the access of resistance
00:43:20
for the last 40 40 years this is a
00:43:22
moment of trol to the region this is a
00:43:24
moment of TR to the International
00:43:26
Community what to see will understand
00:43:28
today is unfortunately the bitter FR of
00:43:31
a many years of repm and cons and and
00:43:34
and and policy conducted by Western
00:43:36
powers that basically came to term with
00:43:39
the Iranian grin threat and this is was
00:43:41
inevitable and this is in the end of the
00:43:43
day it's just happening unfolding in
00:43:45
front of our eyes we are in a very
00:43:48
pivotal moment and I personally believe
00:43:51
that we could exit this pivotal moment
00:43:53
into a better environment and future for
00:43:56
the people of the region but that calls
00:43:58
for ending once and for all the the
00:44:01
Iranian threat or the Iranian regime
00:44:03
ability to continue and to dictate its
00:44:05
radical agenda and terrorizing the
00:44:07
Middle East this is the moment of FL we
00:44:10
have reached this
00:44:12
moment Obi let me ask you as a former
00:44:15
Israeli intelligence analyst that knows
00:44:18
firsthand um how how how an operation
00:44:23
like this on behalf of Israel would go
00:44:25
down will go down
00:44:27
as you know our president here President
00:44:29
Joe Biden has been calling for a
00:44:32
ceasefire has been trying to broker a
00:44:34
ceasefire has been calling for peace in
00:44:36
the Middle East I'm going to ask you a
00:44:38
very direct question right now is that
00:44:43
at this point seeing what we're seeing
00:44:45
right now is that even an option is that
00:44:48
even POS possible at this point or is a
00:44:52
ceasefire just completely off the table
00:44:55
right now no I think that at this point the
00:44:58
CIS far is off the table right now we
00:45:00
are now in the big game uh the direct
00:45:03
Israeli Iranian Collision a scenario
00:45:06
that I was uh predicting accurately in
00:45:09
the past in my recent book inside the
00:45:11
Middle East that was published in 2022
00:45:13
we are exactly this place this is the
00:45:15
time for the big game this is the time
00:45:17
to make the big decisions there is no
00:45:19
more room for avoiding the confrontation
00:45:22
the time is
00:45:23
coming AI thank you let's take it
00:45:26
straight to the White House our Mary
00:45:27
Bruce standing by chief White House
00:45:29
correspondent just listening to what AI
00:45:31
just said uh Mary um you know what does
00:45:36
President Biden do at this moment well
00:45:39
what I can tell you is what he is
00:45:40
actually physically doing at this moment
00:45:42
and that is monitoring this unfolding
00:45:43
from The Situation Room he is there with
00:45:45
vice president Harris we just received
00:45:47
that information from the White House
00:45:48
he's receiving regular updates of course
00:45:50
from his National Security team but also
00:45:52
this k at the White House saying the
00:45:54
president has directed the US military
00:45:56
to Aid is Israel's defense against
00:45:58
Iranian attacks and to shoot down
00:46:00
missiles that are targeting Israel of
00:46:03
course we have heard from a White House
00:46:04
official earlier today saying that a
00:46:06
direct military attack from Iran against
00:46:08
Israel will carry severe consequences
00:46:11
for Iran what exactly that looks like we
00:46:13
still do not know and as you were just
00:46:15
discussing of course the president in
00:46:17
the days leading up to this has been
00:46:18
calling for a
00:46:20
ceasefire saying that while an allout
00:46:22
war is possible the president was
00:46:24
adamant we really have to avoid it uh of
00:46:26
of course that is a a hard sentiment to
00:46:29
see how that is possible given what we
00:46:31
are seeing play out right now Kira Steve
00:46:33
G ganard what could the consequences be
00:46:36
for
00:46:38
Iran uh well K I think that um the White
00:46:41
House has has said that the Israelis
00:46:43
have at least relate to them that there
00:46:44
will be economic targets uh remember
00:46:47
that the real um threat to Israel is the
00:46:50
Iranian nuclear program and that has
00:46:52
been developing and the ability for the
00:46:55
Iranians to create what's called a
00:46:57
breakout capability to be able to to
00:47:00
build nuclear weapon in a short period
00:47:02
of time uh is is very close and very
00:47:05
near at hand uh you are seeing these
00:47:07
ballistic missiles tonight raining down
00:47:09
on Israel that theoretically could be
00:47:12
the same kind of ballistic missiles that
00:47:13
could carry one of those nuclear
00:47:15
warheads so as Obi was noting at some
00:47:18
point this is going to have to come to a
00:47:20
head at least in the eyes of the Israeli
00:47:22
uh government and the Israeli military
00:47:24
that they cannot continue to allow Iran
00:47:27
to develop a nuclear weapon capability
00:47:29
that would directly threaten Israel in
00:47:31
the future so there may be some attempts
00:47:34
to go after some of the nuclear programs
00:47:36
within Iran the problem for Israel is
00:47:39
that most of these nuclear programs and
00:47:41
their their um centrifuges are are
00:47:43
buried very deeply uh Israel does not
00:47:46
have heavy bombers to carry deep
00:47:48
penetrating Warheads or the kinds of
00:47:49
Munitions that would be able to take out
00:47:51
those nuclear facilities so uh they can
00:47:54
take out things around those nuclear
00:47:55
facilities they can take out the uh oil
00:47:58
capabilities that uh that the Iranian
00:48:00
economy relies on uh they can take out
00:48:03
various uh parts of the regime the uh
00:48:05
various uh they can go after H himself
00:48:09
uh but the ability to take care of the
00:48:12
real problem which is nuclear weapons uh
00:48:15
is going to be quite a challenge for the
00:48:17
Israeli
00:48:19
military you mentioned H many I mean is
00:48:23
there a scenario here where Israel
00:48:25
strikes the leadership of Iran before
00:48:30
anything else or does this go in phases
00:48:32
does this does this start by by taking
00:48:35
down all
00:48:37
Communications uh power plants uh you
00:48:41
just daily daily functions uh for the
00:48:45
country to to run or is there a
00:48:48
possibility here depending on what
00:48:50
happens inside Israel that Israel May
00:48:53
retaliate and go right for leadership
00:48:58
well remember that they went after NASA
00:48:59
and lot of people didn't think they were
00:49:01
going to go after nasala so uh how many
00:49:03
apparently right after n was was uh
00:49:06
killed uh went into hiding and so
00:49:09
Israel's ability to track senior leaders
00:49:11
in Iran is not as good as it is to track
00:49:14
Hezbollah leaders in Lebanon which is
00:49:16
right next door so they would have the
00:49:18
problem actually finding where he was
00:49:21
remember that the distance between Iran
00:49:24
and Israel is significant uh it's the
00:49:26
same distances between Houston and Los
00:49:29
Angeles so the ability to fly airplanes
00:49:31
and be able to take real-time targeting
00:49:34
uh is not the same as in Lebanon so the
00:49:36
challenge for the Israeli military is
00:49:38
much greater uh in Iran I do think
00:49:40
though that what you're going to see is
00:49:42
um something where the Israelis are
00:49:44
going to take their time there's no need
00:49:45
for them to rush they can assess the
00:49:48
damage take care of what's going on they
00:49:49
still have a campaign going on in both
00:49:51
Gaza and Lebanon there's no rush on what
00:49:54
they need to do in terms of retaliation
00:49:56
there will probably discussions with
00:49:57
allies to include the United States uh
00:50:00
to make sure that the um response does
00:50:02
not uh go beyond the uh Iranian borders
00:50:06
uh but again I think that there are all
00:50:07
sorts of options because the Iranian
00:50:09
defenses are are essentially helpless uh
00:50:12
in the face of the kinds of military
00:50:14
capabilities that the Iranians have or
00:50:16
the Israelis have are Martha RIT a chief
00:50:20
Global Affairs a correspondent on the
00:50:22
phone with us now uh Martha we were just
00:50:25
talking about Iran how deep uh Israel
00:50:29
could strike what would be uh the plan
00:50:32
shortterm long-term or is it an
00:50:35
immediate action going straight toward
00:50:37
it the country's leader uh we were
00:50:40
talking about uh K in hiding uh you have
00:50:43
been to Iran several times uh what are
00:50:46
your thoughts as you are are watching uh
00:50:50
these live pictures um is it is does
00:50:55
does Homan continue to to hide uh is he
00:50:59
in any way uh carrying out instructions
00:51:03
what are your your thoughts at this
00:51:05
moment uh as we are watching just U an
00:51:09
unprecedented time right now uh with
00:51:12
fears of of escalation a wider war and
00:51:15
tremendous risk uh for both countries
00:51:19
well Cara I think being in hiding for
00:51:22
how many and many senior leaders is uh
00:51:25
wise at this theyve been watching what's
00:51:28
happened with Hezbollah and Hamas and
00:51:30
seeing what is happening so we were told
00:51:33
as of yesterday by a senior official
00:51:35
that many of those leaders were already
00:51:38
in hiding I think they likely knew what
00:51:41
was coming uh that certainly on their
00:51:44
part and they likely know what is coming
00:51:46
now so that will probably continue uh
00:51:48
Iran and Steve uh rightly pointed out
00:51:51
doesn't really have the defense systems
00:51:53
in place and depending on what these
00:51:56
Israelis try to strike that will make a
00:51:59
huge difference in perhaps we'll see
00:52:02
another Iranian response but right now
00:52:05
uh they know Hezbollah was vulnerable
00:52:07
they wanted Iran wanted their other pry
00:52:09
group coues to try and hit Israel it
00:52:12
didn't really work and I think that's
00:52:14
one of the reasons uh of many that Iran
00:52:17
finally carried out these strikes
00:52:20
themselves and again uh more waves are
00:52:23
expected they don't believe this first w
00:52:26
AOW strikes will end it and and you've
00:52:29
also seen and over the weekend we talked
00:52:32
to us officials and John Kirby in
00:52:34
particular about the United States
00:52:37
wanting to deescalate this situation but
00:52:40
we certainly have not seen that uh I did
00:52:43
ask John Kirby who is the white house uh
00:52:45
spokesman for National Security as you
00:52:47
know what he thought about them
00:52:50
continuing the fight against Hezbollah
00:52:52
and continuing to go after leaders and
00:52:54
this ground incur
00:52:57
and he said we think they can deescalate
00:52:59
and go after Hezbollah all at the same
00:53:01
time because clearly Israel continuing
00:53:04
the fight against Hezbollah uh felt that
00:53:07
Hezbollah and it certainly is uh
00:53:08
vulnerable that they should basically
00:53:10
get them while they're down and take
00:53:12
care of this uh and again this is
00:53:15
retaliation for that it's retaliation
00:53:17
against Hama but they did get pressure
00:53:20
from their proxies uh to do this kind of
00:53:22
strike and depending on the damage that
00:53:25
will that's when we will see how Israel
00:53:28
will respond to this but they will 100%
00:53:31
respond to this and not only if if the
00:53:34
missiles are intercepted if all the
00:53:36
missiles are intercepted it's also just
00:53:37
the shrapnel from interceptions that can
00:53:40
cause damage uh as I was saying earlier
00:53:43
I was just in Israel last week for about
00:53:46
10 days and the atmosphere in Tel Aviv
00:53:49
there you know thousands of people out
00:53:51
on the street and they haven't seen this
00:53:54
intensity for a very long time and the
00:53:57
missile strike that was also there right
00:53:59
after October 7th and the air rides were
00:54:01
constant uh and today it has to be
00:54:04
bringing them back to that moment there
00:54:06
in Tel Aviv Martha thank you let's get
00:54:09
straight back uh to Tel Aviv our Matt
00:54:11
Gutman uh where the spokes uh person for
00:54:14
the IDF uh just put out a statement Matt
00:54:17
what do we
00:54:18
know uh just a few moments ago kir rear
00:54:21
Admiral Daniel hagari who's the chief
00:54:22
spokesman for the IDF as you just
00:54:24
mentioned when on TV a national
00:54:26
broadcast announcing that for now there
00:54:29
is this all clear telling people they
00:54:31
can sort of begin moving out of those
00:54:33
bomb shelters he told them to stay close
00:54:36
he also said that some of those missiles
00:54:38
apparently hit installations we do not
00:54:40
know and he said they are not aware of
00:54:42
any casualties at this point that does
00:54:44
not mean that there aren't casualties at
00:54:46
this point the one thing that he
00:54:48
certified and Martha just said it is
00:54:50
that there will be a response that
00:54:52
Israel has a plan and typically what has
00:54:54
been happening in the previous attacks
00:54:57
like the one against Nala the head of
00:55:00
hisbah in Lebanon last week the IDF
00:55:04
presents a series of options to the
00:55:06
government the cabinet sits over it and
00:55:08
then they decide what to do that's what
00:55:10
also happened with last night's
00:55:11
incursion into Lebanon so the plans are
00:55:13
on the table the question is how far
00:55:15
does the Israeli government want to take
00:55:17
this just yesterday Israel's prime
00:55:19
minister Netanyahu spoke publicly in
00:55:22
English directing his comments to the
00:55:24
Iranian people saying that the regime
00:55:27
could fall soon and so one of the things
00:55:29
that we begun to hear from Israeli
00:55:31
analysts at this point is a call for a
00:55:33
strike on the bandar abas oil port and
00:55:36
terminal on the Persian Gulf in Iran
00:55:39
it's a huge terminal that controls much
00:55:41
of the oil that goes into that country
00:55:43
and out of that country and if that is
00:55:45
hit that would cause catastrophic
00:55:47
economic damage to Iran and analysts are
00:55:49
telling me it could possibly topple the
00:55:51
regime that's how significant it could
00:55:53
be that would be a major strike they're
00:55:55
also talking about a attacking other
00:55:57
possible energy installations as well
00:55:59
again this is a cabinet decision as
00:56:01
Steve said and Martha as well it does
00:56:04
not have to be decided immediately after
00:56:06
the last round of missiles hit Israel
00:56:09
took a number of days even longer to
00:56:11
retaliate and then it was a very
00:56:13
restrained response essentially firing a
00:56:15
missile from an airplane against a an
00:56:19
Iranian uh raadar base sending the
00:56:21
message that Israel can hit whatever it
00:56:23
wants whenever it wants without being
00:56:25
detected we know that it's not going to
00:56:27
be that restrained this time despite uh
00:56:29
us efforts and the Biden
00:56:31
administration's incredibly uh energetic
00:56:33
efforts in recent months to try to Tamp
00:56:35
down the tenor of the violence here it's
00:56:38
not going to be the case this time a
00:56:39
major question though is whether the US
00:56:42
assists in any attack on Iran at this
00:56:44
point and what kind of assistance that
00:56:47
might be if it does happen but clearly
00:56:50
the reprisal is on the table one more
00:56:52
thing that Martha just mentioned when
00:56:53
you have that many missiles coming in
00:56:56
and we just had additional interceptors
00:56:57
in Jerusalem a few minutes ago it's not
00:57:00
just the missiles that are being blown
00:57:02
out of the sky it's the interceptors
00:57:04
that are exploding to hit them causing a
00:57:06
tremendous amount of shrapnel and having
00:57:09
been just north of Gaza when some of
00:57:11
those Rockets fired from Hamas were
00:57:13
coming down and were intercepted was one
00:57:16
of the eeriest experiences because you
00:57:17
can hear the tinkle of falling shrapnel
00:57:20
and metal on the rooftops as it's coming
00:57:22
down but now we're talking about bus
00:57:24
length missiles and when they come down
00:57:27
it can create a significant amount of
00:57:28
damage even if High explosives don't
00:57:31
detonate anywhere so everybody here is
00:57:33
still assessing they're bracing for
00:57:35
another possible wave which we're told
00:57:38
might happen uh but right now most
00:57:40
importantly we're hearing that the IDF
00:57:42
at least is not aware of any casualties
00:57:44
Kira all right so put this in
00:57:46
perspective just backing up to what you
00:57:48
said at the very beginning about uh the
00:57:51
IDF uh spokesperson saying uh that he's
00:57:55
giving the all clear it's okay to move
00:57:57
out of shelters however a response is
00:58:00
coming what does that tell you um I I
00:58:04
even am looking at you uh you now have
00:58:08
um uh your helmet off um and it's it
00:58:12
seems that it's taken a little bit of a
00:58:15
a pause I guess um with regard to
00:58:18
immediacy right yeah okay I mean I'll
00:58:22
have Nikki our cameraman turn the camera
00:58:24
and show you that traffic if if he can
00:58:27
make it past our producer go traffic is
00:58:29
picking up we haven't seen that in
00:58:31
recent hours there's a trickle of cars
00:58:33
uh people are starting to move about
00:58:35
maybe they were cornered or stuck
00:58:37
someplace and now they're trying to get
00:58:39
back home um obviously life is not
00:58:42
returning to normal Tel Aviv at this
00:58:44
time of night is as Martha mentioned
00:58:46
incredibly vibrant uh even on a week day
00:58:50
that is not the case now and typically
00:58:52
on a day like today Kira most people
00:58:54
would be going to their families for the
00:58:57
holiday for the Jewish New Year um
00:58:59
that's not happening right now but
00:59:00
people are starting to move around you
00:59:02
can see that there's a bit more
00:59:03
confidence um regarding the plan for the
00:59:06
next attack we don't know and it could
00:59:08
take days it could even take longer it
00:59:11
depends how clear of a message and how
00:59:13
big of a response there is and a lot of
00:59:15
it does depend on what kind of damage
00:59:17
was caused by those missiles and those
00:59:19
interceptors but I can tell you one
00:59:21
thing that has not happened that I have
00:59:23
not experienced in 25 years of covering
00:59:25
this region I've never seen a time when
00:59:29
the major headquarters of the IDF in
00:59:31
central Tel Aviv was evacuated the major
00:59:33
base for all of the intelligence for
00:59:36
Israel's version of the NSA for the mad
00:59:39
for military intelligence north of Tel
00:59:40
Aviv was evacuated other bases around
00:59:43
the country were that is incredibly
00:59:45
unusual I think the only time that may
00:59:47
have happened in the past was in 1991
00:59:49
when Iraq was firing scud missiles so
00:59:52
this is a very unusual and uncommon
00:59:54
event tonight and and you can tell the
00:59:57
enormity of it by the Israeli
00:59:59
preparation for this missile Salvo and
01:00:01
of course it's not yet over so the next
01:00:04
few hours are going to be very very
01:00:06
tense here as they wait for a possible
01:00:08
second wave we don't know if there is
01:00:10
going to be one though Kira so bottom
01:00:13
line Matt the the Israel's Iron Dome has
01:00:16
done its job thus
01:00:19
far there's this three-layered system of
01:00:22
anti-missile Defense it's the Iron Dome
01:00:24
for more closer range missile it's the
01:00:26
arrow um and David sling it's this Trio
01:00:29
that works on different levels of the
01:00:31
atmosphere and they seem to have worked
01:00:33
very well but we've seen these videos
01:00:34
and I don't know if you've seen them
01:00:35
coming in or if you're broadcasting them
01:00:37
over me but of massive amounts swarms of
01:00:40
missiles coming in and it looks like
01:00:42
some of them are making impact it's
01:00:44
unclear how many have landed but we do
01:00:47
know that those interceptors to try to
01:00:49
knock those missiles out of the sky also
01:00:51
went up in unpressed numbers uh to try
01:00:54
to eliminate that missile threat again
01:00:57
everybody's still in assessment mode
01:00:59
here in Israel
01:01:00
Kira Matt thank you and and Steve uh
01:01:03
drawing what what Matt just said about
01:01:07
uh what could be the next phase here or
01:01:09
what exactly uh will Israel do as it
01:01:12
sits back Waits plans what re what its
01:01:16
retaliation will look like um and you
01:01:19
you mentioned this early on about oil
01:01:22
and oil installations and and targeting
01:01:25
that versus the death of the supreme
01:01:28
leader how do you see this playing out
01:01:30
do you see more of of Israel going
01:01:34
toward that type of of strategy just
01:01:37
taking out Iran's economy capability to
01:01:40
get by day-to-day the money flow the oil
01:01:43
flow versus uh rolling in hot and going
01:01:47
for the supreme
01:01:49
leader it'll probably be a combination
01:01:52
of of all of the above car because um
01:01:56
the Iranian economy uh and the Iranian
01:01:58
government Ries for about 40% of its
01:02:01
income from oil so you shut up that
01:02:04
income and things like Bas basic
01:02:06
Services begin to go away uh which will
01:02:09
not uh make the Iranian people happy
01:02:11
which maybe what uh what Netanyahu is
01:02:13
alluding to in terms of sort of
01:02:15
fomenting an internal descent that he
01:02:17
thinks is um is closer to the surface
01:02:20
than than may appear um but I do think
01:02:23
that it will be something that will be
01:02:24
done uh with with a combination of of of
01:02:28
ideas in other words do you go after
01:02:30
both the Strategic leadership do you go
01:02:31
after the economy uh do you go after the
01:02:34
nuclear facilities uh there are only a
01:02:36
certain number of aircraft that can do
01:02:38
that the Israelis do not have the the
01:02:40
number of aerial tankers that the US
01:02:42
does so they can't project power uh in
01:02:45
the same mass that they can into Lebanon
01:02:48
but I do want to pick up on something
01:02:49
that Matt said a couple minutes ago um
01:02:52
and about the number of these incoming
01:02:54
so if you remember back in April um the
01:02:56
Iranians were essentially humiliated in
01:02:58
that the Israelis knocked down 99% of
01:03:01
all the incoming weapons in that attack
01:03:04
they learn from that attack uh I was
01:03:06
just looking at one uh
01:03:08
social video that was U that's up on on
01:03:12
um on social media and it shows I
01:03:14
counted 25 impacts somewhere in Israel
01:03:17
within one second and so what the
01:03:20
Iranians Learned was that they had to
01:03:22
overwhelm the Israeli defenses by
01:03:24
launching all of these missiles at the
01:03:26
same time so that's what they they
01:03:28
learned from April and it looks like
01:03:30
that they succeeded and many of these
01:03:32
missiles may have gotten through don't
01:03:34
know what that looks like now we have
01:03:36
been covering the ground war in Gaza the
01:03:38
ground war in Lebanon those Wars are
01:03:41
very infantry Centric um what goes on in
01:03:44
terms of missile defense is something
01:03:46
that you would see out of a movie um
01:03:49
it's usually controlled in a big room in
01:03:51
a dark room with lots of screens you
01:03:54
have all sorts of radar feeding in data
01:03:56
you have multiple systems as mattt
01:03:58
alluded to there's a three- tiered
01:03:59
missile defense system within Israel all
01:04:02
of those computers all of those inputs
01:04:04
all those radar inputs are being fused
01:04:07
at one point the computer is actually
01:04:09
making the decision on when to fire on
01:04:11
which Target automatically so things are
01:04:14
having to happen so quickly that it's
01:04:16
really that the computers themselves are
01:04:18
the ones that are defending Israel and
01:04:20
sometimes it's going to involve using
01:04:22
using us ships uh that may require voice
01:04:25
communication but this is all data link
01:04:27
it's all zeros and ones and it's a very
01:04:29
very different War than what we see on
01:04:31
the ground in Gaza or on the ground in
01:04:33
Lebanon and again how do you see the us
01:04:36
at this point uh playing a role uh we
01:04:40
already know that additional troops have
01:04:43
been set into the region we know we have
01:04:45
uh us uh ships and capabilities uh out
01:04:48
in the waterways um at what point does
01:04:52
the US um I guess pick up its role
01:04:59
we're in election year um we're we're a
01:05:01
month and a half out from a very tight
01:05:03
election uh I highly doubt that the
01:05:06
Biden Administration wants to involve us
01:05:09
uh Personnel in a in a shooting match um
01:05:12
with with Iran at this point uh it
01:05:14
doesn't mean that the US won't defend
01:05:16
Israel won't do anything that Iran uh
01:05:19
won't defend anything that Iran does uh
01:05:21
in terms of follow on attack but I
01:05:23
highly doubt that the us is going to get
01:05:25
itself involved D in direct attacks
01:05:27
against Iran uh I even highly doubt that
01:05:30
they'll do things like provide tanker
01:05:31
support to the to the Israelis uh just
01:05:34
because they don't want to do anything
01:05:35
to to upset domestic politics uh but
01:05:38
again the Israelis have the capability
01:05:40
to do most of what needs to be done
01:05:42
they'll take their time they'll pick
01:05:44
their targets and they'll have some sort
01:05:45
of a strategy uh but uh but there
01:05:47
certainly will be something and it's
01:05:49
going to uh and it's going to be a new
01:05:51
story leading all the way up to the US
01:05:53
elections
01:05:56
it's going to be a volatile time for
01:05:57
sure um just a little bit more than a
01:06:00
month away Steve let's take it back to
01:06:02
our Ian panel who's in Beirut uh Iran
01:06:06
now uh officially taking responsibility
01:06:08
for these attacks I what more are we
01:06:10
hearing um from the Islamic
01:06:12
revolutionary
01:06:14
guard yeah I mean no surprise right uh
01:06:17
we knew that this was going to be coming
01:06:18
from Iran uh we had some questions I
01:06:21
think for a number of days especially
01:06:22
after the assassination of Nala whether
01:06:24
or not IRA would respond or whether it
01:06:27
was afraid of the consequences well
01:06:29
they've certainly made their response
01:06:31
very loud and clear the Iranian
01:06:33
revolutionary guard core issuing a
01:06:35
statement as you say saying that they
01:06:36
were the ones who carried out uh this
01:06:38
attack they say that they targeted
01:06:41
security and Military targets also the
01:06:43
Iranian Mission uh to the United n
01:06:46
Nations also issuing a statement saying
01:06:49
that the attacks are a legal rational
01:06:51
and a legitimate response to Israel's
01:06:54
attacks and when they say Israel's
01:06:55
attacks they obviously mean Israel's
01:06:57
attacks on its allies the proxies
01:06:59
Hezbollah here Hamas elsewhere also the
01:07:02
hooes in Yemen so there was some sense
01:07:05
that this was coming uh they are also
01:07:07
issuing very strong warnings cognizant
01:07:10
of the risks that Israel is going to
01:07:12
respond the very high risk that Israel
01:07:14
is going to respond warning them of
01:07:16
devastating consequences if they do and
01:07:18
I think this is what's praying on
01:07:20
everyone's Minds right now um as Matt
01:07:23
said we don't know if there's another
01:07:24
wave coming some of the state statement
01:07:25
seem to suggest that maybe that was the
01:07:28
response um but but we'll just have to
01:07:30
wait and see and the Israeli authorities
01:07:32
will update us on that but Daniel hagari
01:07:35
the IDF spokesman essentially saying
01:07:37
that for now all things uh things are
01:07:39
clear for Israelis to go back out on the
01:07:41
streets but yes there are real concerns
01:07:44
uh that you know there is another wave
01:07:45
then there's a response then there's a
01:07:47
further retaliation and every time this
01:07:49
gets ratcheted up just to Echo what
01:07:51
Steve was talking about a minute ago the
01:07:54
United States of pentagon uh has said
01:07:56
that uh the US was involved in
01:07:58
intercepting some of those Iranian
01:08:00
missiles so yes defending Israel uh but
01:08:03
again I think getting involved in
01:08:05
anything larger than that I think that's
01:08:07
probably Unthinkable at the moment
01:08:08
Israel has already laid out a broad
01:08:10
spectrum of potential responses uh you
01:08:13
know from from cyber attacks uh to
01:08:15
physical attacks to maybe targeting uh
01:08:17
specific individuals they've been ready
01:08:20
for this for a long time uh they've been
01:08:22
planning for this for a long time and
01:08:24
Israel has incredible intelligence in
01:08:26
Iran uh logistically it's very difficult
01:08:29
as Steve said because it is so far away
01:08:31
it's not like launching attacks here uh
01:08:33
in Lebanon and in Beirut or just across
01:08:35
the border that's very close and much
01:08:37
easier for Israel to do you need a lot
01:08:39
of assets to kind of travel further and
01:08:41
strike further um but nevertheless they
01:08:44
obviously feel that they do have a plan
01:08:45
in place I think there's absolutely no
01:08:47
pressure on Israel they can they can
01:08:49
choose when they want to respond
01:08:51
remember we had that curious statement
01:08:53
from Benjamin Netanyahu in in this video
01:08:56
addressed to the Iranian people just
01:08:58
yesterday uh where he talked about that
01:09:01
they would be free sooner than they
01:09:03
expected very curious choice of words uh
01:09:07
and telling telling the Iranian people
01:09:09
Persian people as he called them that
01:09:11
that there was a kinship between them
01:09:13
and the Jewish people uh but it was a
01:09:15
clear threat to the Iranian leadership
01:09:18
that change was coming I think Israel
01:09:20
thinks that Iran is a very brittle
01:09:22
Society economically uh it's pretty
01:09:24
devastated um politically any challenge
01:09:27
to the regime whether it's come from
01:09:29
from women protesting or it's come from
01:09:31
uh uh more other kind of political
01:09:33
parties has been crushed by the regime
01:09:36
uh people suffer in in Iran without a
01:09:38
doubt and I think Israel's assessment is
01:09:41
that that can be unpicked quite easily I
01:09:43
don't know that that's true because Iran
01:09:45
like a lot of other authoritarian
01:09:46
regimes has been very successful about
01:09:48
controlling its population but if Israel
01:09:51
goes after its economic assets if it
01:09:53
goes after key leadership if it disrupts
01:09:55
the ability to conduct command and
01:09:57
control as it did with Hezbollah here it
01:10:01
was it was astonishing how quickly you
01:10:03
could see an organization that looked
01:10:05
almost unassailable unravel just in a
01:10:08
matter of weeks they had astonishing
01:10:10
intelligence here uh they I beli to have
01:10:12
astonishing intelligence in Iran as well
01:10:15
it's just with Hamas in Gaza that's
01:10:17
where Israeli intelligence failed we're
01:10:19
just going to have to wait and see see
01:10:21
what the Fallout is see if there are any
01:10:23
casualties what the impact has been of
01:10:25
these strikes and then hear from the
01:10:27
Israelis about what their response
01:10:30
is Ian thank you and the IDF spokesman
01:10:32
Daniel hakari just saying uh moments ago
01:10:35
there have been many interceptions uh
01:10:37
some impacts in central Israel and other
01:10:40
areas there will be consequences and we
01:10:44
have a plan that's coming from the chief
01:10:46
spokesperson for the IDF Daniel hagari
01:10:49
as Ian was saying Israel definitely has
01:10:51
a chance on how to respond uh to Iran's
01:10:55
attacks but everyday families uh cannot
01:10:58
our Martha reddits has been talking to a
01:11:00
number of those uh in Jerusalem
01:11:03
particularly those in families that have
01:11:05
been in the shelters uh as we've been
01:11:07
watching all of this uh uh fall out uh
01:11:11
there in uh Israel Martha what are
01:11:14
family members telling you at this hour
01:11:16
you know P we we you have talked to me
01:11:19
and Matt and Ian and we are all used to
01:11:21
being in areas like this and covering
01:11:24
Wars but but I know a young family a
01:11:27
young diplomatic family who just arrived
01:11:30
in Jerusalem several weeks ago and she
01:11:33
texted me and said this is just intense
01:11:37
uh my husband said incoming for real and
01:11:40
we scurried we couldn't see anything
01:11:42
because we were in our shelter I made it
01:11:44
a space room with a light that makes the
01:11:47
ceiling different colors and stars and
01:11:49
put the kids favorite movies on their
01:11:51
iPads but we could hear the sirens so
01:11:54
loudly and then then the interception
01:11:56
booms doing their amazing work it's wild
01:11:59
to plan for this prep for this no this
01:12:02
can and could happen but when when we're
01:12:04
on the floor holding the kids while the
01:12:07
booms go off it is a different
01:12:09
perspective that is a young American
01:12:12
Family who said we just got me all clear
01:12:15
thankfully so we can leave
01:12:18
now Martha thank you hear that that
01:12:21
perspective and and realize that you can
01:12:24
look at those you can look at those
01:12:25
interceptions you can you can know what
01:12:28
those missiles mean and where they could
01:12:30
hit but being with your scared little
01:12:32
kids is a whole different
01:12:34
perspective and it seems that this has
01:12:36
become uh a part of their lives uh
01:12:39
particularly in the past year uh Martha
01:12:43
um there in Jerusalem Martha thank you
01:12:45
let's take it back to our Matt Gutman uh
01:12:48
Matt we are now in wait and see
01:12:52
mode we are and you can see the FL
01:12:54
jackets off there helmet's gone Israel
01:12:56
has uh announced the all clear we
01:12:58
understand that there have been over 150
01:13:00
possibly 180 missiles that were fired
01:13:02
traffic is going again but the damage is
01:13:05
still being assessed and we're seeing
01:13:06
these videos that are coming in Kira and
01:13:08
they show that there were some
01:13:10
installations that were head also uh not
01:13:12
military installations this is still
01:13:14
unverified but some of the videos we're
01:13:16
seeing are very very dramatic in terms
01:13:18
of uh the destruction caused by some of
01:13:20
these missiles as Steve mentioned
01:13:22
earlier they can cause catastrophic
01:13:23
damage even if pieces of them fall not
01:13:26
only because of high explosives in them
01:13:28
but also because of the momentum they're
01:13:30
carrying and the speed that they're
01:13:32
traveling again Israel is now bracing
01:13:34
for the next round Ian mentioned it also
01:13:37
this retaliatory cycle it appears that
01:13:39
that is where we are headed next the big
01:13:41
decision right now Kira is with the
01:13:43
Israeli cabinet they are going to get a
01:13:47
series a menu of possible strike options
01:13:50
against Iran in the coming hours uh and
01:13:53
day or so and at some point in the near
01:13:55
future I'm told they're going to make a
01:13:57
decision we don't yet know what that
01:13:59
will be we don't yet know how severe of
01:14:01
a blow they want to level at the Iranian
01:14:03
regime right now but this was
01:14:05
unprecedented significantly more damage
01:14:08
significantly more missiles than we saw
01:14:10
in the previous Salvo in April
01:14:13
Kira and just uh as we are now in this
01:14:16
wait and see mode the options Matt uh
01:14:19
that Israel has on the table well they
01:14:21
have a lot of options clearly the
01:14:23
question is how much of a wider War
01:14:25
could this turn into the risks the
01:14:28
circumstances right now will Israel
01:14:31
decide to hit those oil installations
01:14:33
will will Israel decide to hit
01:14:35
infrastructure uh and all the
01:14:37
surrounding uh ways that that Iran
01:14:40
survives and makes money uh or will
01:14:44
Israel decide to go straight toward
01:14:47
leadership uh and possibly Iran's
01:14:49
supreme
01:14:51
leader unclear what they'll do what we
01:14:54
do know is that Israel's prime minister
01:14:56
Netanyahu who has essentially been in
01:14:58
power on and off for the past 15 years
01:14:59
and in uh some control of the government
01:15:03
for nearly 20 years really since
01:15:05
1996 has had Iran in his sights since
01:15:08
the start he considers Iran Enemy Number
01:15:10
One for Israel not Hamas not hisbah Iran
01:15:13
is the head of the snake according to
01:15:15
Netanyahu he has been waiting for
01:15:17
something like this and to some degree
01:15:19
there are members of the Israeli cabinet
01:15:21
and the government who see this as an
01:15:23
opportunity to try to topple the Iranian
01:15:26
regime which has bedeviled them for so
01:15:28
many years they've tried to stop the
01:15:29
development of the Iranian nuclear
01:15:31
program they haven't been able to do it
01:15:33
they may see this as their opportunity
01:15:35
but as Steve and others have mentioned
01:15:37
it's a long way from Tel Aviv to tyan
01:15:40
yes Israel has demonstrated an
01:15:41
incredible capacity to strike abroad but
01:15:44
Iran is much farther much more
01:15:46
complicated and their nuclear facilities
01:15:48
are much deeper and more entrenched G
01:15:51
Iran now launching a retaliatory missile
01:15:53
attack targeting Israel right now things
01:15:56
seem to have calmed down we are in a
01:15:57
wait and see mode uh life for those in
01:16:01
Israel they've been told uh they can
01:16:03
leave the shelters but things can change
01:16:06
at a moment's notice we will wait to see

cancer there's all these pictures of her
01:19:31
in the hospital with IVs tubing it was
01:19:34
only a matter of time until Amanda's
01:19:36
whole world came tumbling down oh my God
01:19:39
scanda premieres next Wednesday on ABC
01:19:42
and stream on
01:19:46
[Music]
01:19:48
Hulu and good afternoon everyone I'm
01:19:50
Kira Phillips we continue our breaking
01:19:51
news coverage now Iran launching a
01:19:53
barrage of missiles at Israel air raid
01:19:56
sirens blaring around Tel Aviv as the
01:19:58
Rockets lit up the night sky a senior
01:20:01
official telling ABC news that Israel is
01:20:04
expecting a total of 240 to 250 missiles
01:20:07
from Iran uh also that those missiles
01:20:10
are expected to come in two waves
01:20:13
hitting multiple targets Israel says
01:20:15
there will be consequences and it indeed
01:20:18
has a plan to retaliate the White House
01:20:20
saying that President Biden and vice
01:20:22
president Harris are in The Situation
01:20:24
Room monitoring the attack the president
01:20:26
has directed the US military to Aid
01:20:28
Israel's defense against Iran's attacks
01:20:31
and even one US officials saying that
01:20:33
American forces have intercepted Iranian
01:20:37
missiles the IDF saying it appears the
01:20:39
Rockets have stopped flying for now and
01:20:41
it is telling residents they can leave
01:20:44
their protected spaces Israeli police
01:20:46
say that six people were also killed in
01:20:48
a terror shooting attack in Tel Aviv we
01:20:50
do have team coverage for you starting
01:20:52
off with our chief National
01:20:53
correspondent Matt Gutman in Tel Aviv
01:20:56
Matt just bring us up to date this hour
01:20:59
uh with regard to where we stand as we
01:21:01
are sort of in a wait and seee mode and
01:21:03
that is waiting to see what exactly
01:21:05
Israel is going to do
01:21:08
next but we know the first stage is over
01:21:11
Kira um Israel has just announced
01:21:13
through its Chief military spokesman
01:21:15
Daniel hagari that this round is over
01:21:18
they do not expect additional missiles
01:21:20
to be fired um about 180 missiles fired
01:21:23
according to the IDE F the vast majority
01:21:25
of them appear to have been intercepted
01:21:28
by Israel's very sophisticated air
01:21:30
defense system including these um
01:21:32
anti-missile missiles that we've been
01:21:34
watching go up uh and hit those missiles
01:21:36
in midair um but it does appear to be
01:21:39
over traffic is moving again people are
01:21:41
starting to go about the question is
01:21:44
what happens next as you just posed and
01:21:47
we don't know I don't think the Israeli
01:21:49
cabinet knows what we do understand is
01:21:51
that typically how this would function
01:21:53
and we know that a plan has plans are
01:21:55
already being presented to the Israeli
01:21:57
government is that they're going to
01:21:59
offer a menu of options from the
01:22:01
military you can do this this or this
01:22:03
and it really depends on how severe of a
01:22:05
blow the Israeli government wants to
01:22:07
take against the Iranian regime right
01:22:10
now just yesterday Kira if you'll recall
01:22:12
uh Israel's prime minister Netanyahu in
01:22:14
English addressed the people of Iran
01:22:16
directly saying that your regime might
01:22:19
top be toppled soon that we don't have a
01:22:22
fight with the people of Iran we have a
01:22:24
a problem with the regime in Iran and it
01:22:28
really this is the question right now
01:22:30
how far do they want to take it one
01:22:32
thing is clear though the damage is not
01:22:34
as extensive as some people had feared I
01:22:37
I just got a text message from an
01:22:39
analyst said yes some of those missiles
01:22:41
managed to penetrate Israel's air
01:22:43
defenses and hit military bases and
01:22:45
apparently some civilian areas as well
01:22:48
but so far we understand that there have
01:22:50
been no casualties at least that the IDF
01:22:52
is aware of and that is a big deal the
01:22:56
more severe the casualties the more
01:22:58
severe the damage against sensitive
01:22:59
military installations the more
01:23:01
ferocious the response and so the less
01:23:04
severe this kind of damage the more
01:23:07
restraint Israel might be able to show
01:23:09
and you can rest assured the Biden
01:23:11
Administration is going to try to
01:23:12
pressure Israel to hold back as much as
01:23:15
it can it does not want a massive
01:23:17
Regional War right now uh in the Middle
01:23:20
East Kira don't think anybody wants a
01:23:22
massive Regional War that's for sure
01:23:24
Matt while I have you I mean you mention
01:23:27
regime change are we getting ahead of
01:23:29
ourself to even start to have that
01:23:36
conversation I think so um let's see
01:23:38
what the next response is I think the
01:23:40
concern is that there might be a
01:23:42
retaliatory cycle what we do know and
01:23:45
what Israel's um Chief military
01:23:48
spokesman has just said is that there
01:23:50
will be a response and it will be severe
01:23:52
right this is not going to be what
01:23:54
happened in April after Israel uh got
01:23:57
about 11020 missiles fired from Iran
01:24:00
including about 200 drones and cruise
01:24:02
missiles they managed to knock most of
01:24:03
them out of the sky there is much more
01:24:05
damage this time there is a larger
01:24:07
number of missiles and Israel is taking
01:24:09
this more seriously it responded that
01:24:12
time largely due to us pressure with a
01:24:15
single missile strike against an Iranian
01:24:17
radar installation essentially showing
01:24:19
Iran hey we can hit you at your most
01:24:21
sensitive installation without you even
01:24:23
knowing it and clearly Israel has
01:24:25
penetrated the Iranian regime with its
01:24:28
intelligence apparatus and mad has
01:24:30
incredible Assets in Iran as we saw with
01:24:33
the assassination of Hamas leader isma
01:24:35
Hanah a couple of months ago in the
01:24:38
Iranian revolutionary guard guest house
01:24:40
like the holy of holies so if they can
01:24:42
penetrate there they can get anyone the
01:24:44
question is do they want to do it and
01:24:46
how much of an international outcry is
01:24:49
Israel willing to withstand to try to
01:24:51
topple the regime one thing that I am
01:24:53
hearing quite a bit at this point from
01:24:55
analysts is that Israel might go after
01:24:57
Iran's energy infrastructure possibly
01:25:00
something like the bandar Bas Port
01:25:02
that's sort a lot the oil comes in and
01:25:03
out on the Persian Gulf and taking out a
01:25:06
major oil port and terminal could have a
01:25:08
significant impact on the Iranian
01:25:10
economy which largely relies on oil to
01:25:13
sustain itself so that's something that
01:25:15
is a possibility Kira Matt thank you
01:25:17
let's take it out our Ian panel he's in
01:25:20
beut our chief foreign correspondent Ian
01:25:22
just to uh play off of what m was just
01:25:24
saying it seems that uh of course uh
01:25:27
this is becoming more political no
01:25:29
surprise there are uh members um of of
01:25:33
Congress uh um Senators uh and others
01:25:37
now uh taking to social media platforms
01:25:40
and it seems there seems to be a group
01:25:43
of leaders now rallying behind this idea
01:25:45
to urge President Biden to strike those
01:25:48
oil refineries just one um a tweet that
01:25:51
came out from uh Senator Lindsey GR
01:25:54
Carolina saying this is a moment of
01:25:56
choosing for the Free World regarding
01:25:58
Iran the Ayatollah and Iranian regime
01:26:00
and religious Nazis who want to destroy
01:26:02
the state of Israel their words not mine
01:26:05
they want to purify Islam and attack the
01:26:07
United States again their words not mine
01:26:10
the missile attack against Israel should
01:26:12
be the breaking point and I would urge
01:26:14
the Biden Administration to coordinate
01:26:15
an overwhelming response with Israel
01:26:18
starting with Iran's ability to refine
01:26:20
oil these oil refineries need to be hit
01:26:23
and hit hard because that as the source
01:26:24
of cash for this regime to perpetrate
01:26:27
their Terror my prayers are with the
01:26:29
people of Israel and may God continue to
01:26:31
bless Israel your thoughts in as we
01:26:34
watched these strikes unfold Iran saying
01:26:37
there will be two waves of missile
01:26:40
strikes uh into Israel that first wave
01:26:43
has seemed to calm down now it's a wait
01:26:45
and see scenario of what that second
01:26:47
wave will look like and what exactly
01:26:49
Israel to do will do your thoughts on
01:26:52
this urging uh of the president here in
01:26:55
the United States to strike those oil
01:26:59
refineries I mean you this becoming
01:27:03
political is the last thing that's
01:27:04
probably needed uh the very least is
01:27:07
should be handled by the diplomats but I
01:27:09
think unfortunately it's going to be
01:27:11
handled by military leaders at least for
01:27:13
the foreseeable future uh but for this
01:27:15
then to become an issue in the
01:27:17
presidential election campaign I think
01:27:19
probably would be unfortunate it'd be
01:27:20
unfortunate for the Israeli families who
01:27:23
just spent the last are terrified hiding
01:27:25
in their shelters it'd be deeply
01:27:27
unfortunate uh for the almost 1 million
01:27:30
people here in Lebanon who've been
01:27:31
forced from their homes uh the children
01:27:34
the mothers the innocent civilians
01:27:36
around this region who become victims of
01:27:38
this much wider War uh not of their
01:27:41
choosing um I think that will be that
01:27:44
pressure though it's interesting Lindsey
01:27:45
Graham's uh Lindsey Graham's statement
01:27:47
there um what happened in April remember
01:27:51
again this was a t kind of tip fortat
01:27:54
responds but but the lid was kept on it
01:27:57
uh Iran fired at Israel uh and Israel
01:28:01
intercepted over 99% of those uh
01:28:03
incoming missiles and and Israel
01:28:05
responded but it was kind of kept to a
01:28:08
certain Tempo there is a huge risk here
01:28:11
that that Tempo can't be maintained um
01:28:14
you know was this just Iran making a
01:28:17
show of force they had to respond in
01:28:19
some way after the assassination of is
01:28:21
hania in Teran um and also so of course
01:28:24
because of the assassination of Hassan
01:28:27
nasal here in Beirut they are the
01:28:30
leaders the creators the the supporters
01:28:34
um of this so-called axis of resistance
01:28:36
which involves Hamas in Gaza the Iranian
01:28:39
Shia groups uh the the pro Iranian
01:28:42
groups that operate in Iraq as well as
01:28:44
of course Hezbollah here and they've all
01:28:46
been looking to Iran ever since nella's
01:28:49
assassination just at the start of the
01:28:51
weekend for some kind of response so was
01:28:53
this just a show of force to say yes
01:28:55
we've done our job we saw celebratory
01:28:57
gunfire here in Beirut tonight and
01:29:00
there'll be other places certainly in
01:29:01
the Shia Crescent uh of countries that
01:29:04
stretches from Iran to here in Beirut uh
01:29:07
who will be celebrating tonight um you
01:29:09
know is that
01:29:11
enough is Israel's response going to be
01:29:14
kind of tempered I think that's that's
01:29:16
the biggest question by far tonight will
01:29:19
more sensible heads prevail I think what
01:29:22
Lindsey Graham has to say will be music
01:29:25
to the ears of Netanyahu and certainly
01:29:28
to the right-wing members of his cabinet
01:29:30
uh who see this as a moment of Reckoning
01:29:32
for all of Israel's enemies and that
01:29:34
brings enormous danger brings danger for
01:29:36
Israel as we just saw tonight and
01:29:38
Israel's citizens uh but it also brings
01:29:41
enormous danger for the region it risks
01:29:43
drawing in other people now the whole
01:29:46
Prospect of the United States being
01:29:48
drawn into another Middle East War when
01:29:50
it still has troops in Iraq of course uh
01:29:52
but nevertheless it it spent years
01:29:55
extricating itself from The Quagmire in
01:29:58
Iraq and the Quagmire in Afghanistan uh
01:30:01
the last thing that the United States
01:30:03
needs and even if you listen to to
01:30:05
president Trump he's no advocate of us
01:30:08
uh involvement in overseas Wars but of
01:30:11
course there's always a difference when
01:30:12
you start to talk about Israel people
01:30:14
start to talk about religion uh involves
01:30:16
the Christian far right as well as uh
01:30:19
the religious the the Jewish far rights
01:30:21
as well um people who advocate for a
01:30:24
wider conflict I think are going to have
01:30:26
their voices heard at the moment but I
01:30:28
think the real danger is that Israel
01:30:30
listens to them completely and responds
01:30:32
then we're in a whole different ball
01:30:33
game Kira and we're still in a wait and
01:30:36
see uh for what this wave to on behalf
01:30:39
of Iran will look like and exactly what
01:30:41
Israel will do uh in retaliation Ian
01:30:44
thank you let's take it to our chief
01:30:45
White House correspondent Mary Bruce uh
01:30:47
do we know if President Biden is still
01:30:48
in the sit room Mary uh we don't know
01:30:50
exactly if he's still in the sit room
01:30:52
right now but of course he was
01:30:53
monitoring this unfold in real time
01:30:55
there with his National Security team
01:30:57
and vice president kamla Harris what we
01:30:59
do know is that there will be some kind
01:31:02
of response the big question of course
01:31:03
is whether the US will play any role in
01:31:05
that response the White House earlier
01:31:07
today making very clear that there will
01:31:09
be severe consequences for an attack
01:31:11
like this of course uh we do know that
01:31:13
the US you know has said that they will
01:31:14
provide additional defensive support if
01:31:16
needed they'll protect us forces
01:31:18
operating in the region obviously and
01:31:20
you know to to Ian's point there when
01:31:22
you think back to what happened in April
01:31:23
the us at the time made you know a big
01:31:26
point of stressing that while they were
01:31:27
helping uh to defend Israel that when it
01:31:30
came to the response that the US made
01:31:32
very clear they had no role in any
01:31:34
offensive operation uh I would not be
01:31:36
surprised if you see something similar
01:31:38
play out here of course this is you know
01:31:40
a different attack different
01:31:41
circumstances but the big picture here
01:31:43
cannot be lost that this is exactly what
01:31:45
the Biden Administration and what
01:31:47
President Biden have been trying to
01:31:49
avoid for almost a year now this kind of
01:31:52
escalation and turmoil in the region
01:31:53
this fear of a wider War which which is
01:31:56
now very much upon us um but how does
01:31:59
the president you know Assist Israel
01:32:01
back up our Ally while also not getting
01:32:04
the US dragged further into this
01:32:05
especially not you know with let's be
01:32:07
honest with an election now just around
01:32:09
the corner here in the US yeah it's uh
01:32:12
the timing of all of this is is uh quite
01:32:15
uh adds quite a a Twist Mary for sure
01:32:18
let's take it our senior investigative
01:32:19
correspondent Erin Ki there in New York
01:32:22
um you know this strike happening so
01:32:24
close to the high holiday the Jewish New
01:32:26
Year it starts at sundown tomorrow uh
01:32:28
Erin you were reporting that concerns
01:32:30
overseas translating here to concerns
01:32:32
here uh at home and um law enforcement
01:32:36
already uh taking up precautions adding
01:32:39
more security to synagogues in the New
01:32:40
York area and they were doing that not
01:32:42
just in New York we heard from from Los
01:32:44
Angeles from a number of departments
01:32:46
that were going to be paying extra
01:32:48
attention to places associated with the
01:32:51
Jewish community in advance of the high
01:32:53
holidays beginning as you say tomorrow
01:32:55
evening the start of Russia Shana but uh
01:32:58
more importantly what precipitated
01:33:01
what's unfolding now the the death of of
01:33:04
Hassan Nala the Hezbollah leader in an
01:33:06
Israeli attack that in and of itself may
01:33:09
not Galvanize any individuals in this
01:33:12
country he doesn't have a big following
01:33:14
in the United States but what's playing
01:33:16
out on TV uh their intelligence
01:33:19
officials are a little more concerned
01:33:22
that that could cause somebody
01:33:24
to to act out and in fact we just had a
01:33:27
look at a at an assessment from the
01:33:29
Department of Homeland Security saying
01:33:31
that in addition to this missile barrage
01:33:34
one concern for the United States would
01:33:36
be whether Iran follows it up with uh
01:33:40
attacks on Cyber infrastructure cyber
01:33:43
attacks on American infrastructure that
01:33:46
would be one concern here in addition to
01:33:48
the Lone Wolf who may see what's going
01:33:50
on on their TV and decide to take
01:33:52
matters into their own hands that's why
01:33:55
the the alert among law enforcement
01:33:57
officials in this country has been so
01:33:58
high ever since last October 7th and
01:34:01
leading to the year anniversary since
01:34:03
the Hamas attack on Israel K aarin thank
01:34:06
you senior National policy reporter an
01:34:07
FL joining us from the Pentagon now
01:34:10
what's uh what's the word uh there at
01:34:12
the Pentagon and as we know additional
01:34:15
US troops have been sent uh to the
01:34:17
region not to get involved in any uh
01:34:19
type of ground war of course but there
01:34:21
are assets out in the waters uh to help
01:34:24
uh and and the president has made it
01:34:25
very clear that the US military will
01:34:27
help Israel uh defend itself but what do
01:34:29
we know at this point after we've
01:34:31
witnessed this first wave of missile
01:34:33
attacks on behalf of Iran uh what will
01:34:37
uh what will be the role of those extra
01:34:39
added US troops um and and and what
01:34:42
happens next as we wait for Israel to
01:34:45
make a decision and do we know uh if our
01:34:47
military leaders are in contact um with
01:34:51
the IDF or leadership there in Israel
01:34:54
well Cara they say that they are
01:34:56
certainly in constant contact one of the
01:34:58
things that we're just learning now at
01:34:59
this hour is that the US did help in
01:35:02
intercepting some of these missiles uh
01:35:04
you know one of the things that I think
01:35:05
was interesting was about 20 minutes
01:35:06
before the barrage began we saw a
01:35:09
statement come across our emails from
01:35:11
the Pentagon saying you know if Iran
01:35:14
acts the US and Israel believes that it
01:35:16
should endure significant consequences
01:35:18
that's a quote significant consequences
01:35:20
and and then of course by the time it
01:35:22
was in our email inboxes we already
01:35:24
seeing the attack play out so now of
01:35:25
course the question is uh what will the
01:35:27
US role be if any in responding to this
01:35:30
attack uh the US saying that top of mine
01:35:33
for them in this building the Pentagon
01:35:35
officials say are the 40,000 US troops
01:35:38
that are in that region we have a lot of
01:35:40
troops stationed on ships Iraq and Syria
01:35:42
and in drone bases all of them they are
01:35:45
very nervous that these uh service
01:35:47
members might be caught in the
01:35:49
crosshairs they of course want to also
01:35:51
defend Israel and Israel's right to
01:35:53
defend defend itself they say that that
01:35:55
is a very clear message uh but we're
01:35:57
going to be hearing from the Pentagon
01:35:58
later today and of course I think one of
01:35:59
the top questions will be what role will
01:36:02
the US play in any kind of retaliation
01:36:04
from
01:36:06
Israel okay and so can you guys tell me
01:36:09
where we're going
01:36:11
next okay great all right uh an flare
01:36:14
thank you so much of course we've got a
01:36:15
lot of moving Parts here uh with all our
01:36:18
correspondents uh overseas and here back
01:36:21
at home from the Pentagon to the White
01:36:23
House uh to what we've been monitoring
01:36:25
uh here over in Israel uh we are getting
01:36:29
more pictures in it looks like uh as we
01:36:31
have been talking about Iran's uh uh
01:36:34
first wave of a two-wave attack that
01:36:37
country says on Israel a retaliatory
01:36:41
attack uh as we have seen a number of
01:36:44
Hamas uh leaders uh and and even the
01:36:47
head uh of Hezbollah um Hassan nasala
01:36:51
killed in an is Israeli air strike on
01:36:54
Friday all of this unfolding within the
01:36:56
past year since October 7th uh when
01:36:58
Hamas attacked Israel we have watched uh
01:37:02
these Iranian proxies um um targeted by
01:37:06
Israel now Iran responding with these
01:37:09
missile attacks today they say it will
01:37:11
be two waves of missile attacks isra
01:37:14
Israel now in a wait and see mode to see
01:37:17
what that second wave will look like uh
01:37:19
and we're in a wait and seee mode too to
01:37:22
see exactly what Israel will will do
01:37:24
next a lot of politics are playing in
01:37:26
here as well we've seen leaders here in
01:37:28
the US weighing in on what is happening
01:37:31
in the Middle East my next guest is a
01:37:33
senior adviser actually for the Trump
01:37:35
campaign Danielle Alvarez Danielle uh
01:37:37
thank you for joining us we've had uh as
01:37:39
you've seen uh within the past uh almost
01:37:42
two hours the breaking news uh of Iran
01:37:45
launching that barrage of of missiles at
01:37:47
at Israel former president Trump did
01:37:49
release a statement that I see uh saying
01:37:52
that if I win will be peace in the world
01:37:54
he hasn't exactly outlined his strategy
01:37:57
strategy rather for dealing with the
01:37:59
crisis in the Middle East right now so
01:38:00
please tell us if Trump uh were indeed
01:38:04
uh to win the presidency what exactly
01:38:07
does he plan to do about what we're
01:38:08
witnessing right now in the Middle East
01:38:10
well the thing that I can say with
01:38:12
certainty is that this never would have
01:38:13
happened if president Donald Trump was
01:38:15
in the white house I mean there was a
01:38:17
peace he had signed historic Abraham
01:38:19
Accords uh and brought historic peace to
01:38:21
the Middle East and this truly is
01:38:24
weakness from kamla Harris and Joe Biden
01:38:26
who have emboldened Iran it's absolutely
01:38:28
devastating to see I pray for everyone
01:38:31
in Israel right now and certainly all of
01:38:33
the correspondents that ABC has covering
01:38:36
as as we see this unfold it's absolutely
01:38:39
tragic and it's something that the
01:38:40
president is going to address he is uh
01:38:43
in Wisconsin right now I just got off
01:38:45
the phone um on the tarmac and it's
01:38:49
something that he is going to address at
01:38:50
the top of his remarks at his event in
01:38:52
Wisconsin
01:38:54
and of course we'll follow that Danielle
01:38:55
but I I do want to ask you as his
01:38:57
surrogate if he were president right now
01:38:59
what would he do again it just never
01:39:02
would have happened he's someone who can
01:39:04
bring uh everyone to have a seat at the
01:39:07
table and can deliver peace uh that way
01:39:11
and certainly peace through strength he
01:39:12
is uh someone again who delivered the
01:39:15
historic Abraham Accords and brought
01:39:18
peace that nobody thought was possible
01:39:21
to the Middle East and so that strength
01:39:23
leadership is something that we're
01:39:24
missing in the White House and something
01:39:26
that we will return to in November in
01:39:29
his statement earlier today former
01:39:30
president Trump also mentioned the war
01:39:32
in Ukraine and Senator Vance has been
01:39:34
very outspoken in his opposition to
01:39:36
providing funding for Ukraine he's also
01:39:38
floated a plan that would allow Russia
01:39:40
to keep the Ukrainian territory that is
01:39:42
captured something Ukrainian president
01:39:44
zinsky calls dangerous but is that plan
01:39:46
part of the solution that former
01:39:48
president Trump says he has for ending
01:39:50
the war between Ukraine and Russia was
01:39:53
you know president Trump met with
01:39:54
president zilinsky in Trump Tower just
01:39:56
recently and the conversation that they
01:39:59
had was very simple they need to end
01:40:01
this war we need to stop uh the death
01:40:04
the destruction that is going on and the
01:40:07
promise was that each side would be
01:40:09
happy but I don't uh want to get ahead
01:40:11
of the president in his
01:40:12
plans well Senator Vance uh once said
01:40:16
that Trump would veto a nationwide
01:40:18
abortion ban I want to talk about what's
01:40:20
going to happen tonight and that is the
01:40:22
uh the vice presidential uh debate
01:40:25
that's going to be taking place as we
01:40:26
know during the presidential debate
01:40:28
Trump said he had never discussed that
01:40:30
with his running mate Vance later said
01:40:33
quote learned his lesson about speaking
01:40:36
for Trump but why did he say that in the
01:40:38
first place and and what do you expect
01:40:40
him to say tonight as we take this
01:40:42
debate with Governor Tim Walls I think
01:40:45
the most important thing to keep in mind
01:40:46
as we head into the vice presidential
01:40:48
debate tonight is that voters really are
01:40:51
yearning to hear about policy uh we
01:40:54
learned that obviously from the ABC
01:40:56
debate uh that was hosted not long ago
01:40:59
that voters want to know what each
01:41:00
candidate is going to do on those key
01:41:02
issues that polling tells us is top of
01:41:04
mind and those issues obviously include
01:41:06
the economy uh inflation obviously the
01:41:09
Border I think you know I I would
01:41:11
imagine CBS is going to Pivot and we're
01:41:13
going to talk a lot about what is
01:41:16
currently unfolding in the Middle Middle
01:41:18
East now and it is these vice
01:41:21
presidential nominees challenge to to
01:41:23
deliver the message for each of our
01:41:25
tickets to voters and obviously uh on
01:41:27
the Republican side on the Trump Vance
01:41:29
ticket we know uh that there is a track
01:41:32
record for a strong economy for a secure
01:41:35
border for safety uh and peace through
01:41:38
strength at home and abroad well there's
01:41:40
a clear divide in the polling right now
01:41:42
where men favor uh the Trump Vance
01:41:44
ticket and women are favoring Harris and
01:41:46
wall Senator Vance has come under Fire
01:41:48
as we know for some of his past comments
01:41:50
criticizing uh what he called childless
01:41:52
cat lady
01:41:53
do you think tonight gives him a chance
01:41:55
to do a little damage control you know
01:41:57
actually um in previous elections for
01:42:00
example in the 2016 elections uh the
01:42:03
Democrats won female votes by 12 points
01:42:05
in the latest CNN poll uh it actually
01:42:08
president Trump had cut that margin by
01:42:10
two points um so we're doing well in in
01:42:13
all polling whether it's Battleground
01:42:15
polling whether you look at numbers like
01:42:17
with Hispanic voters whether you're
01:42:19
looking at numbers with young voters
01:42:22
cutting in margins
01:42:23
uh with black voters and again it's
01:42:26
because president Trump is trusted on
01:42:29
those top issues uh voters feel like he
01:42:32
can restore the economy and really
01:42:35
believe uh in his promise to make
01:42:38
America great again to unleash American
01:42:40
Energy to unleash the American worker
01:42:42
and I think that that should be the main
01:42:45
priority because it's what viewers want
01:42:47
to see they want to know what they can
01:42:50
expect out of their future we know that
01:42:52
kamla Harris and Tim Walls have been
01:42:54
dodging we know that President Trump and
01:42:56
JD take those tough interviews uh do
01:42:58
those rallies do those gaggles and so I
01:43:01
think we're going to see more of that
01:43:02
tonight but I certainly hope uh for all
01:43:05
the viewers watching that CBS has a
01:43:08
large responsibility to make sure to
01:43:09
focus on those key issues one more
01:43:12
question Danielle you know Senator Vance
01:43:14
uh has also come under Fire as you know
01:43:16
for spreading all those false rumors
01:43:18
that Haitian migrants are eating
01:43:19
household pets in his home state of Ohio
01:43:22
Ohio's Republican govern Governor said
01:43:23
it's not true and asked him to stop why
01:43:26
did the senator amplify a false story
01:43:28
about his own State without even
01:43:30
checking out the facts first I mean he
01:43:32
even reiterated uh in an interview
01:43:34
saying sometimes he just makes stories
01:43:36
up to grab people's attention so Senator
01:43:39
Vance was very clear he had um received
01:43:41
feedback from his constituents his
01:43:43
priority obviously being the senator
01:43:45
from Ohio he listened uh and he had
01:43:48
heard the 911 calls really the Crux of
01:43:50
the problem however is that this small
01:43:53
town in Springfield Ohio which normally
01:43:54
has a population of 60,000 had
01:43:57
20,000 uh Haitian immigrants dropped on
01:44:01
the town it has overwhelmed resources
01:44:03
whether it's School whether it's Health
01:44:05
Care um so it it really is an issue that
01:44:08
we're seeing Across the Nation I heard
01:44:11
anecdotally uh similarly it's happening
01:44:13
in in towns and in communities in
01:44:15
Virginia I know that it's happening
01:44:17
across the country where because as DHS
01:44:20
has reported 10 million illegal IM
01:44:23
immigrants probably that number is
01:44:24
larger uh probably millions and millions
01:44:27
more have illegally crossed that
01:44:29
southern border across the country
01:44:32
communities are being overwhelmed
01:44:34
whether with it's with illegal
01:44:35
immigrants Rising migrant crime uh with
01:44:38
fent andol pouring in I mean it's
01:44:40
absolutely devastating it's something
01:44:42
that our country cannot sustain and it's
01:44:44
something that we know in polling uh
01:44:47
that Americans support president Trump's
01:44:49
plan to secure the Border
01:44:53
look forward uh to the vice presidential
01:44:55
debate tonight thank you so much of
01:44:57
course we'll have full team coverage uh
01:44:59

01:47:46
here glad you're streaming with us we do
01:47:49
have breaking news that we're continuing
01:47:50
to cover Rana launching a launching
01:47:52
rather a barrage of missiles at Israel
01:47:54
hello everyone I'm Kira Phillips Air
01:47:56
Raid Sirens blaring across Tel Aviv as
01:47:59
the Rockets lit up the night sky senior
01:48:01
Administration official telling ABC that
01:48:04
Israel is expecting a total of 240 to
01:48:06
250 missiles from Iran the missiles are
01:48:09
expected to come in two waves hitting
01:48:12
multiple targets within Israel Israel
01:48:14
making it very clear there will be
01:48:16
consequences and it does have a plan
01:48:18
it's a plan that we are waiting on this
01:48:20
hour the White House saying that
01:48:21
President Biden and vice president
01:48:23
Harris have been monitoring the tack
01:48:25
from The Situation Room the president
01:48:26
has directed the US military to Aid
01:48:29
Israel's defense against Iran's attacks
01:48:31
and also uh apparently American forces
01:48:35
have now intercepted some of those
01:48:37
Iranian missiles the IDF says it appears
01:48:40
that the Rockets have stopped flying for
01:48:42
now and it is telling people that they
01:48:44
can leave their protected spaces Israeli
01:48:47
police also say that six people were
01:48:49
killed in another incident a terror
01:48:52
shooting they say it happened in Tel
01:48:54
Aviv it was all happening at the same
01:48:57
time we do have team coverage we want to
01:48:58
start with inz quera there in Tel Aviv
01:49:01
where inz uh it has calmed down quite a
01:49:05
bit um we saw uh cars back out on the
01:49:07
road folks coming out from the shelters
01:49:10
however Israel is still in a wait and
01:49:12
sea mode expecting another wave uh of
01:49:15
attacks from Iran and then of course the
01:49:17
big question remains what exactly is
01:49:19
Israel going to do about it
01:49:24
that's right Cara yeah so we have been
01:49:25
given the all clear for now the IDF
01:49:27
spokesman Daniel hagari saying they
01:49:29
don't believe there is any uh you know
01:49:31
new threat at this time so residents
01:49:34
have been told they can leave their
01:49:35
shelters but really a remarkable night
01:49:37
this evening a frankly scary night over
01:49:40
180 missiles fired from Iran at Israel
01:49:44
uh people were told to take cover we
01:49:46
here in Tel Aviv had to go to the
01:49:47
shelter there are shelters on every
01:49:49
floor we heard those loud booms those
01:49:52
interceptions the Iron Dome intercepting
01:49:54
those uh missiles we know that there
01:49:55
were sites in central Israel that were
01:49:58
targeted as well we understand that
01:49:59
Israeli military sites were targeted and
01:50:01
in Jerusalem our colleagues in Jerusalem
01:50:03
were also reporting interceptions uh
01:50:06
there so we know the US did participate
01:50:08
in those interceptions as it did you
01:50:10
know last time around when there was
01:50:11
another big attack from Iran back in
01:50:13
April over 99% of those um you know
01:50:17
hundreds of missiles that had been fired
01:50:19
at Israel were intercepted then we're
01:50:21
still waiting to hear just how many have
01:50:22
been intercepted this time around but
01:50:25
like you say the big question is what
01:50:26
happens next Israel has vowed to
01:50:28
retaliate they say they do have a plan
01:50:30
and will respond at the time and place
01:50:32
of their choosing is is reporting all
01:50:35
right let's
01:50:36
take can we go to Seth Crum please
01:50:39
retired colonel in the United States
01:50:40
Army and former Chief of Staff at
01:50:42
Special Operations Command Central Seth
01:50:44
it's great to have you at this time when
01:50:46
we're uh sitting here in this wait and
01:50:48
see moment uh not sure what exactly uh
01:50:51
Israel is going to do we saw that first
01:50:53
wave of missile attacks um that seemed
01:50:57
to um I guess uh been through the Iron
01:51:01
Dome um uh taken down uh without issue
01:51:05
folks there in Israel back on the
01:51:08
streets coming out of their shelters
01:51:10
however Iran saying there is going to be
01:51:12
a second wave and what exactly that
01:51:15
could mean and then of course what
01:51:17
exactly is Israel going to do so just
01:51:20
your background and your understanding
01:51:22
of how the Middle East works and attacks
01:51:25
that we have of course watched over the
01:51:28
years how do you see this playing out
01:51:30
what do you think it has come to and
01:51:33
what is Israel going to
01:51:35
do absolutely it's the million-dollar
01:51:38
question it really boils down to three
01:51:40
things from my experience the first is
01:51:42
what was targeted how it was uh how
01:51:46
effective was were the strikes and then
01:51:48
what weapons were used and this is
01:51:50
really critical because if it was truly
01:51:52
all ballistic missiles which only take
01:51:54
12 minutes to get from Iran to Israel
01:51:57
then that is a much different message
01:51:59
than when they send drones which are
01:52:00
slower than easier to intercept and the
01:52:02
so what is this and you just hit it it's
01:52:05
based on really history for the last 20
01:52:07
years there's been proportionality
01:52:10
between Israel and Iran when it comes to
01:52:13
strike versus Counter Strike and they've
01:52:15
always maintained this proportionality
01:52:17
but the big change over the last say
01:52:19
eight months to a year of course has
01:52:21
been this propor personality escalation
01:52:24
and the real question to me is this does
01:52:27
Israel maintain its clear focus on
01:52:30
putting their citizens back into
01:52:32
Northern Israel and and doing operations
01:52:34
in southern Lebanon to remove the threat
01:52:36
or are they going to be forced to do
01:52:38
those operations and deal directly with
01:52:41
Iran so when we say wait and see this is
01:52:44
really what we're looking for right
01:52:46
now so apparently uh the IDF is taking
01:52:50
responsibility now for killing the
01:52:52
commander of the unit for the transfer
01:52:55
of weapons from Iran and its Affiliates
01:52:58
to Hezbollah and Lebanon this just came
01:53:01
out uh moments ago in a statement uh
01:53:05
your thoughts yeah absolutely they have an
01:53:08
Exquisite intelligence apparatus because
01:53:11
it's not just the weapons it's got to be
01:53:13
your ability to Target and they're
01:53:15
disrupting and destroying and degrading
01:53:17
key commanders which really weakens the
01:53:20
command and control of and its proxies
01:53:24
and Iran has this growing list now that
01:53:26
they say hey look we're going to do
01:53:27
payback whether it's hinea whether it's
01:53:30
uh Nala or this latest strike this list
01:53:34
of degradated or killed commanders Iran
01:53:38
has to do something but there's risk for
01:53:40
Iran if all their missiles are shot down
01:53:42
and they look completely incompetent in
01:53:45
their response that is going to blow
01:53:47
back on them because there's two
01:53:49
audiences there's the International
01:53:50
Community in Israel and there's the Iran
01:53:52
Ian Street where they have to look
01:53:54
strong because there is a homegrown
01:53:55
threat there that they have to
01:53:57
address I mean if you just look at all
01:54:00
the leadership that's been taken out
01:54:02
within the past year ever since Hamas
01:54:04
attacked Israel back on October 7th I
01:54:07
mean commanders within Hamas uh
01:54:11
political leaders uh and then you see
01:54:14
all the attacks I'm just looking at all
01:54:16
the various dates Seth and then on
01:54:19
September 17th that the pager and walky
01:54:22
ho explosions that killed Hezbollah
01:54:24
leaders there in Lebanon and then
01:54:27
everything culminating to September 27th
01:54:30
uh where Israel uh worked slow uh and
01:54:34
and diligently with those uh bunker
01:54:37
Buster bombs taking out hezbollah's uh
01:54:39
main Commander Hassan nasrala I mean
01:54:42
Iran is losing all its support all its
01:54:45
proxies um I mean are they going at it
01:54:49
alone now and and what do you think that
01:54:52
means uh is it possible that in any way
01:54:56
shape or form they will be forced to
01:54:58
back down or does Israel go so hard uh
01:55:02
it it takes out the
01:55:03
regime no it's a great question this is
01:55:06
really all about context so yes key
01:55:09
leaders have been killed from Hezbollah
01:55:11
but Hezbollah is a very large
01:55:12
organization it's much more
01:55:14
sophisticated than Hamas so there's some
01:55:17
Intel analysts will tell you that
01:55:18
there's over
01:55:19
150,000 Fighters sitting in southern Le
01:55:22
Lebanon that can be mobilized against
01:55:24
any attack that comes in so it's
01:55:26
critical to disrupt that command of
01:55:28
control by killing all those commanders
01:55:30
and making their response to any sort of
01:55:33
Israel Israeli incursion to make it
01:55:36
disjointed or just not synchronized and
01:55:39
that will maximize the effectiveness of
01:55:41
any operations that Israel takes but
01:55:43
make no mistake Israel's goal here is to
01:55:45
put their citizens back in Northern
01:55:47
Israel it's not to go in and hold ground
01:55:50
inside of Lebanon for a long period of
01:55:52
time and one of the main reasons are
01:55:54
that or is is that there's
01:55:57
150,000 mobilized Israeli soldiers that
01:56:00
have to cover all of these fronts Gaza
01:56:02
Westbank Golden Heights Southern Lebanon
01:56:06
and Northern Israel so there is a limit
01:56:08
to what they're going to be able to mass
01:56:09
and be able to execute you add these
01:56:11
strikes in today there's a calculus
01:56:14
that's going on in Tel Aviv right now
01:56:16
for what are our priority targets and
01:56:17
how are we going to address them so the
01:56:19
next 24 to 48 hours will be fascinating
01:56:23
and we're watching closely Seth
01:56:25
appreciate you we want to take it now to
01:56:26
Beirut where our foreign correspondent
01:56:28
Marcus Moore is what's the latest from
01:56:30
Bayo
01:56:32
Marcus well Carol We are continuing to
01:56:35
to watch and wait for what happens next
01:56:38
as we have uh really seen a remarkable
01:56:41
event unfold in Israel Iran firing some
01:56:45
180 Rockets as uh we heard inz uh
01:56:48
reporting many of those Rockets raining
01:56:50
down over over Tel Aviv and other parts
01:56:53
of of Israel Iran for its part has said
01:56:56
that this was in response uh to the
01:56:58
assassination of ishia as well as the
01:57:01
assassination of other top leaders
01:57:03
including Hezbollah Hassan nashrah and
01:57:07
essentially trying to make the case that
01:57:09
uh that their response was justified and
01:57:11
that this was not meant to be an
01:57:13
escalation but a response that they said
01:57:15
would be coming and one that Iran said
01:57:18
uh came after a lot of self-restraint
01:57:20
that was what what they used used uh
01:57:22
words they used in the statement that
01:57:24
they released tonight but as you've been
01:57:26
talking about with all of our guests uh
01:57:29
and my colleagues that the the question
01:57:31
now is what is what happens and what
01:57:33
impact will it have on the millions of
01:57:36
of innocent people caught in the middle
01:57:38
of this as you know we are here in
01:57:40
Beirut where we have watched for several
01:57:41
days um Israel carry out uh its
01:57:44
bombardment uh including targeted
01:57:46
strikes even today several of them
01:57:48
earlier this evening in the dya district
01:57:51
of of Southern in Beirut where they have
01:57:54
targeted other key members they say of
01:57:56
Hezbollah but we've also seen them carry
01:57:58
out strikes outside of that area and it
01:58:00
all speaks to really the volatile nature
01:58:03
of the situation and how this is still
01:58:06
far from over and no one knows what's
01:58:09
going to happen next and in the midst of
01:58:10
that Kira you have uh tens of thousands
01:58:13
of people who have been displaced from
01:58:15
their homes uh many of them who have
01:58:17
watched this this event unfold tonight
01:58:20
unsure of what they will be doing with
01:58:21
their lives in the hours and days ahead
01:58:24
K yeah Israel has the upper hand and is
01:58:27
in full control at this moment but all
01:58:29
the innocent bystanders whether it's in
01:58:31
Beirut or Tel Aviv or Jerusalem they
01:58:34
don't have a choice in the matter um
01:58:37
let's take it to our political
01:58:38
contributor Asma khed now Asma uh you
01:58:42
know President Biden has been pushing
01:58:43
for a ceasefire he has been wanting a
01:58:46
peaceful end to all of this I think
01:58:48
prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has
01:58:51
made it pretty clear that's off the
01:58:53
table uh and he's going to do things his
01:58:55
way that's right uh you know I think
01:58:57
throughout this conflict particularly in
01:58:59
the last several months as you saw
01:59:01
President Biden articulate a sort of a
01:59:03
very clear outline for a ceasefire the
01:59:06
ceasefire plan you mentioned um you know
01:59:07
I remember I was there at the White
01:59:09
House this was announced at the end of
01:59:10
May and uh many months went forward and
01:59:13
we heard from White House officials that
01:59:14
it looked like it was going to be near
01:59:16
the end um you'd often hear that Hamas
01:59:18
wasn't really on board with this
01:59:19
ceasefire but also sources have told me
01:59:22
that there were moments where Netanyahu
01:59:23
also changed the parameters of what he
01:59:25
wanted there and I think the really big
01:59:27
challenge has been as one Middle East
01:59:29
source told me you as the negotiating
01:59:32
party cannot want this ceasefire more
01:59:35
than the parties on the ground involved
01:59:36
and that's where I think the struggle
01:59:38
has been for Biden this white house has
01:59:39
wanted an end to the conflict but it's
01:59:41
not clear that the parties involved
01:59:42
wanted it as much as
01:59:45
Biden AA thank you Jay O'Brien's at the
01:59:47
White House for us today uh so I guess
01:59:50
two questions for you Jay um as we're
01:59:52
getting a number of of uh leaders from
01:59:55
the hill weighing in on what's Happening
01:59:57
overseas uh we do know that the
01:59:59
president was in the sit room uh the
02:00:00
vice president uh right next to him uh
02:00:03
monitoring what was happening as uh Iran
02:00:06
was uh launching those missiles do we
02:00:09
know what exactly he is he is doing uh
02:00:12
now and is he also in a wait and see
02:00:16
mode uh waiting to see what Israel is
02:00:18
going to do or do you think he'll get a
02:00:19
heads up from Benjamin Netanyahu as to
02:00:22
what may happen next well a number of
02:00:25
different things to unpack in that
02:00:26
firstly I can tell you that when the
02:00:28
president and the vice president were in
02:00:30
The Situation Room it was largely White
02:00:33
House officials say to coordinate the
02:00:35
defensive response the US participated
02:00:38
in trying to shoot down some of these
02:00:41
missiles and succeeding in shooting down
02:00:43
some of these missiles exactly how many
02:00:45
the israelies were able to intercept
02:00:47
versus the US and potentially other
02:00:49
allies shooting down is very much clear
02:00:52
but we know that that was what the
02:00:53
president and the vice president were
02:00:56
monitoring there the defensive ability
02:00:58
by US military assets to shoot down some
02:01:01
of these missiles in participation of
02:01:03
course in defending their Israeli
02:01:05
Partners we also know that senior White
02:01:07
House officials telegraphed that there
02:01:09
would be quote severe consequences for
02:01:12
Iran if there was a direct strike of
02:01:15
this nature at Israel exactly what
02:01:18
severe consequences look like is still
02:01:20
very much unclear as you said the White
02:01:22
House is somewhat in a weit and SE
02:01:24
pattern they are obviously in close
02:01:26
touch with Israel because they were
02:01:27
participating in shooting down some of
02:01:30
these missiles but to your question of
02:01:32
will the White House get a heads up as
02:01:34
to any kind of retaliatory response
02:01:36
Israel crafts here that is an open
02:01:38
question no one really knows the answer
02:01:40
to that I'll give you a good example
02:01:42
when Israel took out the leader of
02:01:44
Hezbollah in that strike on that
02:01:46
building that they said was a Hezbollah
02:01:48
headquarters us officials got an update
02:01:51
about that strike while it was in motion
02:01:53
they learned that it was happening while
02:01:55
it was in progress so how much of a
02:01:57
heads up they might get to an Israeli
02:01:59
retaliation here is still very much
02:02:01
unclear I can tell you we know that
02:02:03
White House officials are going to get
02:02:04
questions like that and others over the
02:02:06
course of the day the White House Press
02:02:08
briefing was supposed to take place some
02:02:09
time ago it's now scheduled to begin
02:02:11
really any moment now and White House
02:02:13
National Security adviser Jake Sullivan
02:02:15
will be there to brief on this issue
02:02:17
Kira and we will definitely take that
02:02:20
live as soon as it starts uh Jay
02:02:22
let me ask you a question as we do as we
02:02:24
are seeing some leaders start to weigh
02:02:26
in of course on on social media Lindsey
02:02:28
Graham in particular uh really trying to
02:02:31
urge
02:02:32
uh the president our president um to um
02:02:37
strike oil refineries in Iran um and and
02:02:41
to hope hope that that is the next move
02:02:44
that Israel makes uh as as it's kind of
02:02:47
U laying out and examining its options
02:02:49
here um lindsy Graham saying this is the
02:02:52
moment of choosing for the Free World
02:02:53
regarding Iran the Ayatollah and Iranian
02:02:56
regime are religious Nazis who want to
02:02:58
destroy the state their words not mine
02:03:00
they want to purify Islam and attack the
02:03:02
United States again their words not mine
02:03:05
the missile attack against Israel should
02:03:06
be the breaking point and I would urge
02:03:08
the Biden Administration to coordinate
02:03:10
an overwhelming response with Israel
02:03:12
starting with Iran's ability to refine
02:03:14
oil these oil refineries need to be hit
02:03:16
and hit hard because that is the source
02:03:18
of cash for the regime to perpetrate
02:03:21
their Terror your thoughts and what are
02:03:24
you hearing from the White House well I
02:03:26
can tell you I I mean what Lindsey
02:03:28
Graham says is in line with what we've
02:03:31
seen reported our Matt Gutman reporting
02:03:33
for instance some of the more Hardline
02:03:35
Israelis believe as well a direct strike
02:03:37
on Iranian oil capabilities um but in
02:03:40
looking at statements that we've seen
02:03:42
from congressional leaders some of
02:03:43
Lindsey Graham's colleagues as lindsy
02:03:45
Graham so often is on the issue of Iran
02:03:48
he has gone further than any other
02:03:50
Republican or Democrat at this hour he
02:03:52
is calling for that direct strike for
02:03:55
Israel to strike Iranian oil refineries
02:03:57
and as you said for the US to support in
02:04:00
that operation if it were to take place
02:04:03
what I've seen in statements from other
02:04:05
Congressional Republicans for instance
02:04:07
again Lindy Grahams colleagues in the
02:04:08
Senate and in the house is this idea of
02:04:11
supporting Israel of denouncing Iran
02:04:14
Roger Marshall for instance on the armed
02:04:16
services committee uh said that quote
02:04:18
Iran has is a danger to quote danger to
02:04:22
freedom but no one goes as far as
02:04:24
Lindsey Graham does to call for any kind
02:04:26
of direct strike on Iran they say that
02:04:29
Israel has the right to retaliate but
02:04:31
they certainly don't go as far as
02:04:33
Lindsey Graham does in saying that the
02:04:34
US should Aid in any kind of direct
02:04:37
Israeli retaliation onto Iran so Lindsey
02:04:41
Graham somewhat out on an island at this
02:04:43
hour with that statement but there's
02:04:45
another thing to keep in mind here which
02:04:46
is Lindsey Graham in those tweets that
02:04:48
you were just reading off also said that
02:04:51
he talked to former president Trump and
02:04:53
gave him that reasoning too Jay we're
02:04:55
going to take you right to the White
02:04:56
House now where that briefing is taking
02:04:58
place right behind you just a few
02:04:59
questions because this is an ongoing
02:05:01
situation and I need to get back to my
02:05:03
desk today Iran launched nearly 200
02:05:06
ballistic missiles towards Targets in
02:05:07
Israel the United States military
02:05:10
coordinated closely with the Israeli
02:05:12
Defense Forces to help defend Israel
02:05:15
against this attack US Naval destroyers
02:05:18
joined Israeli air defense units in
02:05:20
firing inter ctors to shoot down inbound
02:05:24
missiles President Biden and vice
02:05:26
president Harris monitored the attack
02:05:28
and the response from the White House
02:05:30
Situation Room joined in person and
02:05:32
remotely by their National Security team
02:05:35
we are still working with the IDF and
02:05:37
the authorities in Israel to assess the
02:05:39
impact of the attack but at this time
02:05:42
and I stress at this time we do not know
02:05:45
of any deaths in Israel we are tracking
02:05:48
the reported death of a Palestinian
02:05:50
civilian in Jericho in in the West Bank
02:05:53
we do not know of any damage to aircraft
02:05:55
or strategic military Assets in Israel
02:05:59
in short based on what we know at this
02:06:01
point this attack appears to have been
02:06:03
defeated and ineffective this was first
02:06:06
and foremost the result of the
02:06:07
professionalism of the IDF but in no
02:06:10
small part because of the skilled work
02:06:12
of the US Military and meticulous joint
02:06:15
planning in anticipation of the attack
02:06:18
we are also aware of reports of a
02:06:20
terrorist attack in Jaffa that took the
02:06:22
lives of a number of Israeli civilians
02:06:24
and wounded several others today our
02:06:26
condolences go out to the families of
02:06:28
the victims and to the family of the
02:06:30
Palestinian civilian in
02:06:32
Jericho obviously my update here is
02:06:35
based on early reports and we reserve
02:06:38
the right to amend and adjust as
02:06:40
necessary as we gather more information
02:06:42
the word fog of war was invented for a
02:06:44
situation like this this is a fluid
02:06:46
situation we will consult with the
02:06:48
Israelis on next steps in terms of the
02:06:52
response and uh how to deal with what
02:06:54
Iran has just done and we will continue
02:06:56
to monitor for further threats and
02:06:59
attacks from Iran and its proxies we are
02:07:02
particularly focused on protecting us
02:07:04
service members in the region and with
02:07:06
that I'll take just a few questions yeah
02:07:08
thanks Jake uh is the administration
02:07:10
making any preparations to evacuate US
02:07:12
citizens from Lebanon or elsewhere in
02:07:14
the region we have been very clear for
02:07:16
some time now uh that US citizens should
02:07:19
Avail themselves of commercial means to
02:07:22
depart Lebanon given everything that's
02:07:24
going on we have said that from this
02:07:26
Podium from multiple podiums we continue
02:07:28
to say that but we have not uh begun
02:07:31
triggering a non-combatant emergency
02:07:33
evacuation a Neo um and do not have an
02:07:37
intention to do so at this time if that
02:07:39
changes we'll let you know but we
02:07:40
continue to reinforce the point American
02:07:43
citizens in Lebanon should follow the
02:07:45
guidance from the state department which
02:07:48
is uh to find civil uh civilian
02:07:50
commercial means to depart because in
02:07:53
extremists we may not be able uh to get
02:07:55
them out safely yes thanks Jake what is
02:07:58
the US view on whether Israel should
02:08:00
retaliate and what is your concern about
02:08:02
this leading to a wider escalation of
02:08:05
war in the region we've had some initial
02:08:08
discussions with the Israelis in the
02:08:10
aftermath of this at the military level
02:08:12
and also at the White House to prime
02:08:14
minister's office level we'll continue
02:08:16
those conversations in the hours ahead
02:08:18
I'm not going to prejudge or get ahead
02:08:20
of anything we want to have some deep
02:08:21
consultations with the Israelis and I'll
02:08:23
have more to report to you after we get
02:08:25
the opportunity for deeper discussions
02:08:28
escalation in the region obviously this
02:08:30
is a significant escalation by Iran a
02:08:32
significant event and it is equally
02:08:35
significant that we were able to step up
02:08:37
with with Israel and create a situation
02:08:39
in which uh no one was killed in this
02:08:41
attack in Israel so far as we know at
02:08:43
this time we are now going to look at
02:08:46
what the appropriate next steps are to
02:08:48
secure first and foremost American
02:08:50
interests and then to promote stability
02:08:52
to the maximum extent possible as we go
02:08:54
forward yeah back in April the
02:08:55
president's message to Israel was to
02:08:57
take the win when the US and Israel were
02:08:59
able to intercept the barrage of Iranian
02:09:02
missiles is he recommending a similarly
02:09:04
limited response this time I will not
02:09:07
from this Podium uh share the
02:09:09
president's recommendations uh he will
02:09:11
have the opportunity to share them
02:09:12
directly we're going to have as I said
02:09:13
ongoing consultations with the Israelis
02:09:15
this afternoon this evening it is too
02:09:17
early for me to tell you anything
02:09:19
publicly in terms of our assessment or
02:09:22
in terms of what our expectations are of
02:09:24
the Israelis or the advice that we will
02:09:25
give them so will he be speaking to
02:09:27
prime minister nahu today I don't have
02:09:29
anything to announce from this Podium
02:09:30
but I can tell you that he is tracking
02:09:33
this minute by minute we are very much
02:09:35
deeply in touch with the Israelis and in
02:09:37
so far as we have calls to read out
02:09:38
we'll make sure to read them out with
02:09:39
you just last question then I'll turn it
02:09:41
over thank you Jake in April after Iran
02:09:44
struck Israel uh the is US issued a
02:09:47
number of sanctions um as a consequence
02:09:51
this morning the president said there
02:09:52
would be severe consequences if Iran
02:09:54
carried out this attack what are those
02:09:57
consequences and are they more severe
02:09:59
than sanctions totally legitimate
02:10:01
question and that answer will come based
02:10:04
on the conversations and consultations
02:10:06
we have with our Israeli counterparts
02:10:08
it's too soon for me to stand before you
02:10:10
today and give you an answer what I can
02:10:11
tell you is this uh we are proud of the
02:10:14
actions that we've taken alongside
02:10:15
Israel to to protect and defend Israel
02:10:17
we have made clear that there will be
02:10:19
consequences severe consequences for
02:10:21
this attack and we will work with Israel
02:10:23
to make that the case thank you very
02:10:24
much thank you thank you
02:10:26
Jake thank you Jake okay on to the rest
02:10:30
of rest of the programming here uh this
02:10:33
morning President Biden was briefed by
02:10:35
his homeland security adviser Liz
02:10:37
Sherwood Randall on the latest impacts
02:10:40
of hurricane Helen and this afternoon he
02:10:42
will receive an inter inter agency
02:10:44
briefing on the hurricane Helen response
02:10:47
and Recovery efforts at the president's
02:10:50
Direction the Bayern Harris
02:10:52
Administration continues to use every
02:10:54
tool available to get assistance and
02:10:56
resources to the communities that need
02:10:58
them the most yesterday the president
02:11:00
approved a major disaster declaration
02:11:02
for Georgia which will unlock additional
02:11:05
assistance to help those
02:11:07
recovering this is in addition to the
02:11:10
major disaster declaration swiftly
02:11:12
approved by the president following
02:11:14
request from North Carolina South
02:11:17
Carolina and Florida as well as requests
02:11:19
for emergency assistance AC across seven
02:11:21
states tomorrow the president will
02:11:23
travel to Raleigh North Carolina where
02:11:25
he will visit the state Emergency
02:11:27
Operations Center to meet with local
02:11:30
officials and also First Responders and
02:11:33
the vice president will travel to
02:11:34
Augusta Georgia tomorrow and will then
02:11:37
head to North Carolina in the coming
02:11:39
days as of today thousands of personnel
02:11:43
from across the federal Workforce are
02:11:45
deployed in supporting State Le
02:11:47
hurricane Helen response efforts across
02:11:50
we been following the White House briefing
02:11:52
joher there just updating all the
02:11:54
resources and support going into those
02:11:57
impacted by Hurricane Helen but just
02:11:59
before that we heard from National
02:12:01
Security adviser Jake Sullivan giving us
02:12:03
uh really the first uh live brief uh
02:12:07
from the White House since Iran attacked
02:12:10
Israel uh earlier today um as and looks
02:12:14
like myor is is now stepping up to the
02:12:16
mic he's probably going to talk about um
02:12:18
immigration uh efforts there but we're
02:12:21
going to bring it back to our Jay
02:12:22
O'Brien who's at the White House for us
02:12:24
while this briefing is going on Jay uh
02:12:26
the National Security uh adviser there
02:12:29
uh talking about and Alex paset thank
02:12:31
you for uh joining us now as our
02:12:32
breaking news coverage continues uh we
02:12:35
are both listening uh Jay to to Jake
02:12:37
there um confirming that US destroyers
02:12:41
uh did shoot down some of those inbound
02:12:43
missiles so we were talking about uh the
02:12:46
Iron Dome uh was able to uh deflect of
02:12:49
course a number of those missiles coming
02:12:51
in from Iran in that first wave of
02:12:53
attacks but now we are getting
02:12:55
confirmation that the US was able uh to
02:12:58
assist as well uh and working with the
02:13:01
IDF uh now to also assess the impact of
02:13:05
those missiles that did uh move into to
02:13:07
Israel right now apparently according to
02:13:10
Jake Sullivan no deaths uh in Israel at
02:13:12
this time that's good news uh the attack
02:13:15
appears to be uh defeated and
02:13:16
ineffective Jake Sullivan uh said right
02:13:19
Alex and also you're learning some more
02:13:21
information uh with regard to the Air
02:13:22
Force yes well so that's right our
02:13:25
Global Affairs team has been working on
02:13:26
this and an IDF official told reporters
02:13:30
uh that continuing on into Tuesday night
02:13:33
the Israeli Air Force is going to
02:13:34
continue conducting powerful strikes all
02:13:37
over the Middle East and so again you
02:13:40
know the big question was you know how
02:13:42
is this going to ramp up um uh what's
02:13:45
already a heightened intense situation
02:13:47
there what was going to be the response
02:13:49
there and we're getting a little bit of
02:13:51
a telegraph here uh which I don't think
02:13:53
that anybody is is is shocked to to to
02:13:56
see but it's clear that um you know
02:13:58
there's going to be a response from
02:14:00
Israel into tonight right and the
02:14:02
question is how big will that response
02:14:04
be yeah there have been these little
02:14:05
incursions inside Lebanon now uh you
02:14:07
know air air Assets in full force uh
02:14:10
protecting the area and clearly looking
02:14:12
for any any more action on behalf of
02:14:14
Iran as well yes well yeah but one of
02:14:17
the things that was interesting going
02:14:18
into uh you know today's retal attack
02:14:22
you know Israel had had mentioned that
02:14:24
all of the attacks that it had carried
02:14:26
out were were in direct response and and
02:14:28
and and their words measured right and
02:14:31
so um with this uh and even though it
02:14:35
does seem like a lot of this uh was was
02:14:37
was thed by Israeli and American forces
02:14:40
um you know how how does that
02:14:42
retaliatory action uh play out what is
02:14:45
what is the equal in their eyes and Jay
02:14:47
we know that the president uh was in the
02:14:50
sit room with the vice president of
02:14:51
course all uh his uh key leaders
02:14:54
watching everything go down once the
02:14:57
first wave of attacks came through Iran
02:14:59
uh threatening a second wave of missile
02:15:02
attacks however but it seems uh this
02:15:04
moment in Tel Aviv things are calm uh
02:15:06
people have been allowed to come out of
02:15:08
the shelters uh get back onto the
02:15:10
streets uh but clearly I guess it's a
02:15:13
wait and see on two fronts will Iran
02:15:15
attack Israel once again and what
02:15:18
exactly is Israel going to do about it
02:15:20
yeah and Kira Jake Sullivan just
02:15:22
answered a few questions uh that a lot
02:15:25
of us had in the White House briefing I
02:15:27
just want to tick through the various
02:15:29
questions that he answered the first
02:15:30
question was we knew that the US
02:15:33
supported Israel in shooting down these
02:15:35
ballistic missiles but we did not know
02:15:37
how we didn't know what military assets
02:15:39
were used were they fighter jets Etc
02:15:42
Jake Sullivan says they were Naval
02:15:44
destroyers shooting intercept missiles
02:15:46
so shooting their own missiles designed
02:15:48
to Target and take down those Iranian
02:15:50
missiles that's the first thing he
02:15:51
answered the other thing he answered is
02:15:53
something you just noted which is that
02:15:54
early assessments and he stressed those
02:15:56
assessments are early but early
02:15:58
assessments show that there are no
02:15:59
Israeli deaths as a result of this
02:16:01
Iranian attack and then he goes on to
02:16:03
say that President Biden is monitoring
02:16:06
this situation minute by minute but he
02:16:08
doesn't have much to say yet as to
02:16:10
exactly what the Israeli response will
02:16:13
be and how much of a role if any the US
02:16:16
would play in that Israeli response
02:16:19
there's a telling thing that he said in
02:16:20
which he said there are conversations
02:16:22
ongoing right now at this hour between
02:16:25
the White House and prime minister
02:16:26
Benjamin netanyahu's office he did not
02:16:28
say whether President Biden plans to
02:16:30
speak directly with the Prime Minister
02:16:32
but then he said there are quote ongoing
02:16:34
cons consultations with the Israelis he
02:16:37
called this a quote significant
02:16:39
escalation but he did not say exactly
02:16:41
what the US response and certainly what
02:16:44
the Israeli response would be to all of
02:16:46
this all of that to underscore your
02:16:48
point that there is so much uncertainty
02:16:50
at this hour as to exactly what Israel
02:16:53
plans to do now in not just the coming
02:16:55
hours but the coming days well and Jay
02:16:58
you're talking about those conversations
02:17:00
between Netanyahu and the White House I
02:17:02
want to bring in arz DEA who's uh live
02:17:05
in Tel Aviv right now ANZ to that point
02:17:08
I mean what do we know about Israel's
02:17:11
response thus
02:17:15
far yeah Alex I mean the Israelis have
02:17:17
vowed to retaliate they say they do have
02:17:19
a plan and they will resp on at the time
02:17:21
and place of their choosing but we
02:17:24
understand speaking to Israeli officials
02:17:25
and you know I think analysts widely
02:17:27
agree that this time around the response
02:17:29
will be quick so last time around in
02:17:31
April when uh Iran fired you know
02:17:33
hundreds of missiles at Israel it took
02:17:36
five or six days for Israel to respond
02:17:39
in this case we're expecting it to be
02:17:40
much shorter so potentially this evening
02:17:42
potentially you know tomorrow uh we'll
02:17:44
have to wait and see but we do expect
02:17:45
the response to be a lot quicker what
02:17:47
that response will look like we don't
02:17:48
know and I think to Jay's point you know
02:17:50
it'll be interesting to see what the US
02:17:51
uh kind of pressures Israel to do and
02:17:53
whether Israel listens we know in the
02:17:55
last few days you know the US had been
02:17:57
pushing for diplomacy uh you know prior
02:17:59
to Hassan Nala being taken out uh the US
02:18:01
had been calling for that 21-day
02:18:03
ceasefire Israel had seems to have grown
02:18:05
increasingly comfortable with defying
02:18:07
the US and so it'll be interesting to
02:18:09
see uh when it comes to this you know
02:18:11
retaliation here uh whether Israel kind
02:18:13
of you know Works hand inand with the us
02:18:15
or decides to to kind of defy the US's
02:18:17
wishes and respond as it says at the
02:18:19
time and place of its Cho
02:18:22
well it sure seems that President Biden
02:18:23
who was pushing for a ceasefire that
02:18:25
idea right now is off the table let's
02:18:28
take it to foreign correspondent Marcus
02:18:29
Moore who's in uh Beirut what's the word
02:18:31
from there
02:18:34
Marcus well uh Kira there were uh
02:18:37
gunshots that we heard um in the air in
02:18:39
the streets of Beirut behind us also
02:18:42
there were people dancing and playing
02:18:45
music and and cheering in the streets
02:18:48
all of this in response to um Ron's
02:18:51
rocket barrage this evening uh certainly
02:18:54
this has been a a very significant week
02:18:58
uh for people here in Beirut
02:19:00
particularly following the assassination
02:19:02
of Hassan nasrala because as as I speak
02:19:05
to you now we are in several days of
02:19:07
mour here in Lebanon and in several
02:19:11
other countries across the Middle East
02:19:13
and so um a lot happening here and um to
02:19:17
in's point about what what happens next
02:19:20
and and whether the US uh can put enough
02:19:23
pressure on Israel uh to contain
02:19:26
whatever their response might be um I
02:19:28
when you talk to people here in Lebanon
02:19:30
they have long said that the the US um
02:19:35
us officials are the only ones that can
02:19:38
uh stop Israel from its bombardment or
02:19:41
from expanding this uh this this
02:19:43
conflict and this war and um that really
02:19:47
is the sentiment but at the same time
02:19:49
people will say uh you know the US is
02:19:51
talking about the need for diplomacy but
02:19:53
at the same time um supplying Israel
02:19:56
with weapons and as we saw tonight uh
02:19:58
helping to defend Israel from Iran's
02:20:00
rocket barrage and so there there really
02:20:03
is a large part of the population here
02:20:06
uh that doesn't have a lot of faith in
02:20:08
what the US officials say as it relates
02:20:11
to a ceasefire or any potential
02:20:12
ceasefire or anything that would put
02:20:14
pressure on Israel and again that's
02:20:17
that's the feeling of a lot of people
02:20:18
here and as I tell you that and Kira as
02:20:21
you well know um in the midst of all of
02:20:24
this the military actions that we've
02:20:26
seen the talks of diplomacy there are
02:20:29
everyday people who are literally
02:20:31
suffering as a result of what we've been
02:20:33
watching unfold here not only here in
02:20:35
Lebanon but also in Northern Israel um
02:20:39
they can't go back to their homes um and
02:20:41
here in Lebanon it's the same story and
02:20:43
people have lost their loved ones in the
02:20:45
midst of what's Happening Here so as we
02:20:48
talk about what could happen next uh and
02:20:51
while diplomacy seems to have fallen
02:20:53
short it is of the only hope that people
02:20:56
have on either side of the Border here
02:20:58
for there to be some resolution to this
02:21:01
all right Marcus thank you want to take
02:21:02
you straight to the state department now
02:21:04
uh I understand the briefing has begun
02:21:06
can you tell me who assist United States
02:21:09
and its Partners was able to
02:21:11
successfully defeat this
02:21:12
attack this was a Brazen unacceptable
02:21:16
attack by Iran and every nation in the
02:21:18
world must join us in condemning it
02:21:21
secretary blinkin joined President Biden
02:21:23
vice president Harris and other members
02:21:25
of the president's National Security
02:21:26
team in monitoring this attack as it was
02:21:29
unfolding uh as well as our response as
02:21:32
the president has made clear our support
02:21:34
for Israel's security is Ironclad we
02:21:37
will continue to stand with the people
02:21:39
of Israel at this critical moment with
02:21:41
that Matt thanks Matt um so I I think
02:21:47
this probably goes without saying but
02:21:48
just to make sure we got on the record
02:21:50
so in terms of what happened in Israel
02:21:53
there no damage to any us facilities no
02:21:56
injuries no nothing at this time we are
02:22:00
not aware of any damage to us facilities
02:22:02
as you know we um issued an order
02:22:04
earlier today for our Personnel uh State
02:22:06
Department Personnel in Israel to uh
02:22:09
shelter at their homes uh we have full
02:22:10
accountability for all our Personnel
02:22:12
we're not aware of any um of any
02:22:15
civilian casualties inside Israel there
02:22:17
uh let alone uh an American citizen
02:22:19
casualty there is one report of a
02:22:21
Palestinian who died in the West Bank um
02:22:24
but no no um no damage to any us
02:22:27
facility either and then both you and
02:22:30
the National Security adviser just a few
02:22:32
minutes ago talked about this being a
02:22:34
Brazen and unacceptable escalation um
02:22:37
but does the administration see anything
02:22:38
that Israel has done over the course of
02:22:40
the last three weeks is escalatory so
02:22:42
certainly they have done things um uh to
02:22:46
uh to expand the conflict but if you
02:22:49
look at the action that they have taken
02:22:51
they were bringing terrorists to Justice
02:22:53
terrorists who have launched attacks on
02:22:55
Israeli civilians if you look at what
02:22:58
Iran did today we have been warning for
02:23:01
some time about the threat posed by Iran
02:23:05
arming and funding terrorist groups
02:23:07
across the Middle East and the attack
02:23:10
today just demonstrated the danger of
02:23:13
those actions what you saw was Iran
02:23:15
launching a state on-state attack to
02:23:19
protect and defend the terrorist groups
02:23:21
that has built nurtured and that it
02:23:23
controls so there is a difference
02:23:25
between the actions uh that we have seen
02:23:27
Israel take to defend its civilians and
02:23:28
what we I just and what we seest that
02:23:31
they are equivalent I just wanted to
02:23:32
make sure that you didn't see no you we
02:23:34
have certainly seen Iran or we've
02:23:36
certainly seen Israel expand the nature
02:23:37
of its attacks against Hezbollah but is
02:23:39
a very diff is a very different type of
02:23:41
attack than what we saw today from a
02:23:43
state a state actor against another
02:23:45
state okay and then uh last one and this
02:23:47
has to do with Lebanon and the northern
02:23:48
front um
02:23:52
the situation there um is you know
02:23:56
unstable and uncertain um I know that
02:24:00
you guys have been um asking Americans
02:24:03
who might want uh information about
02:24:06
assistance and possibly leaving to sign
02:24:09
up um on a on a form can you give us an
02:24:12
update on the numbers of those and
02:24:14
whether or not you're planning to
02:24:17
um I don't know to to to to do anything
02:24:20
in the way of either US Government um uh
02:24:25
capabilities or charter flights or
02:24:28
fairies sure so uh you're right as we
02:24:31
often do in these situations we have
02:24:32
directed US citizens who are in Lebanon
02:24:34
to register with the state department uh
02:24:37
for information and especially for
02:24:38
information with uh uh how to depart
02:24:41
Lebanon and we're providing them
02:24:43
whatever information we can we have had
02:24:45
as of today around 6,000 American
02:24:47
citizens in Lebanon who have registered
02:24:49
with us uh for further information
02:24:51
should be clear not all of those
02:24:53
American citizens are seeking assistance
02:24:55
with departing people are just looking
02:24:57
for information they're looking for
02:24:58
options there are a number of American
02:25:00
citizens who live in Lebanon who have
02:25:01
lived there for years and and do not
02:25:03
want to to depart the country um so in
02:25:07
terms of the status on the ground the
02:25:08
airport is still open commercial flights
02:25:11
are operating although they are
02:25:13
available uh at times at reduced
02:25:15
capacity we are working right now with
02:25:17
Airlines to provide additional flights
02:25:20
with more seats for American citizens uh
02:25:22
it's something that we hope to turn on
02:25:24
in the next few days and we will be in
02:25:25
touch with American citizens uh uh if
02:25:27
and when we were able to expand that
02:25:29
capability how do you how do you
02:25:31
make how do you ensure that there're
02:25:34
going to be seats reserved for Americans
02:25:36
no we're working with uh I can't get in
02:25:37
the details but we're working with
02:25:38
commercial carriers to ensure that
02:25:40
capability and when we have further
02:25:43
information and we've locked this down
02:25:44
it's something we'll communicate
02:25:45
directly with American citizens who've
02:25:47
asked for information and then I'll be
02:25:48
happy to come and talk with it talk
02:25:49
about it here at the brief room thanks
02:25:51
yeah J so given that um the secretary
02:25:53
and the National Security adviser just
02:25:55
said that this attack by Iran is sort of
02:25:58
defini
02:26:00
definitively escalatory in nature I know
02:26:03
that state you've been telling us the
02:26:05
secretary even been told us that for
02:26:07
months they' you've been encouraging the
02:26:09
Israelis not to respond to attacks and
02:26:12
provocations in such a way that
02:26:15
escalates anything further are is the
02:26:17
secretary going to continue to so offer
02:26:20
that same advice to the Israelis now in
02:26:22
the wake of these missile strikes I'll
02:26:24
say a couple things about about that
02:26:26
first of course Israel has the right to
02:26:28
defend itself as Any Nation okay we were
02:26:30
listening to a state department briefing
02:26:33
from Matt Miller top points there
02:26:35
they're not aware of any damage to any
02:26:37
us facilities no us fatalities uh in the
02:26:40
region also Secretary of State Anthony
02:26:42
blinkin earlier today said that Israel
02:26:45
effectively defeated this attack now I
02:26:47
want to take you over to uh
02:26:50
a Department of Defense briefing that's
02:26:52
happening right now let's listen into
02:26:54
Patrick Ryder face of threats from Iran
02:26:57
and Iran back terrorist organizations
02:26:59
we'll provide a readout of that call as
02:27:01
soon as possible to be crystal clear as
02:27:04
secretary Austin has said should Iran
02:27:06
its Partners or its proxies use this
02:27:09
moment to Target American Personnel or
02:27:11
interests in the region the United
02:27:12
States will take every necessary measure
02:27:15
to defend our people and separately I do
02:27:17
have an update to provide on DOD support
02:27:20
to Hurricane uh Helen response efforts
02:27:22
but I'll provide that at the end with
02:27:23
that happy to take your questions we'll
02:27:25
start with ap Tara thanks General rer um
02:27:28
what Navy destroyers were involved in
02:27:31
helping shoot down an intercept and
02:27:34
given this escalation um what's being
02:27:38
communicated between secretary Austin
02:27:40
and Minister Gant right now in terms of
02:27:42
tampering things down and potentially
02:27:44
avoiding a wider War um so the the two
02:27:47
Navy destroyers involved were the USS uh
02:27:50
bual and the USS Cole uh in terms of the
02:27:54
the conversations between secretary
02:27:56
Austin and Minister glant you know I
02:27:58
won't get into uh you know the the
02:28:01
private discussions other than to say uh
02:28:03
we are Consulting closely with them on
02:28:05
next steps uh and the continued defense
02:28:08
of Israel and then are there any plans
02:28:11
underway to conduct a Neo given the
02:28:14
increased risk of a wider War um right
02:28:17
now uh there there has been no order to
02:28:19
Evac evacuate uh as you've heard us say
02:28:22
before we are a planning organization so
02:28:24
we of course plan for all contingencies
02:28:27
U but as of right now uh state
02:28:29
department has not called for an
02:28:30
evacuation Jennifer should we assume
02:28:32
that the sm3 were used by the Cole and
02:28:35
the bulkley to shoot down the or to
02:28:37
intercept the missiles um I'm not going
02:28:40
to get into the specific type of
02:28:41
ordinance Jennifer other than to say
02:28:43
again uh they fired a dozen interceptors
02:28:47
and Iran said that they gave a heads up
02:28:50
to the US and to Russia um how much
02:28:53
warning were you given by Iran yeah I'm
02:28:55
I'm not aware of any uh pre-warning by
02:28:59
Iran uh about their potential attack as
02:29:02
you know this is something we've been
02:29:03
following very closely for a while uh
02:29:07
based on the threats uh of retaliation
02:29:09
by Iran uh and so we've been closely
02:29:12
Consulting with Israel uh for a while
02:29:15
now to be prepared uh in the eventuality
02:29:18
and as today demonstrated uh we were
02:29:20
prepared uh and we were able to
02:29:22
successfully work alongside Israel to
02:29:24
defend them from this attack let me go
02:29:26
to Carla thanks Pat um you said that the
02:29:29
Destroyers shot down Iranian missiles
02:29:31
where do they come from were they all
02:29:33
from inside Iran or was some also from
02:29:35
Yemen being shot by the hoies uh Carla
02:29:38
to my knowledge and again we're still
02:29:39
assessing this these were all uh
02:29:41
launched from Iran ballistic missiles uh
02:29:44
and what I said was that they uh fired
02:29:47
uh the interceptors uh
02:29:50
to towards those missiles so and then
02:29:53
were any other us assets involved in
02:29:56
this defense um of course we have a lot
02:29:58
of capability in the region uh a lot of
02:30:00
things that are there to be prepared for
02:30:02
a wide variety of threats but in terms
02:30:03
of uh the the launching of these
02:30:05
intercept interceptors it was those two
02:30:07
destroyers so just being clear no
02:30:09
groundbased interceptors were used in
02:30:10
this were the um any were you aware of
02:30:14
any Duds that didn't fire off that maybe
02:30:16
Iran wanted to fire more than the
02:30:18
roughly 200 um as I mentioned you know
02:30:20
we're still assessing uh the outcome of
02:30:22
the the attack and so we'll have much
02:30:24
more information later um but these are
02:30:26
all you know our initial reports and
02:30:28
then on the second call with um the
02:30:29
secretary and and Minister Gant did he
02:30:32
urge Israel not to respond or to to
02:30:35
moderate any response to Iran or did
02:30:37
Israel share did Gant share any of
02:30:39
Israeli intentions for their potential
02:30:41
response here uh well again as I'm sure
02:30:42
you can appreciate um I'm I'm just not
02:30:44
going to be able to get into the the
02:30:46
details of their call other than to say
02:30:49
again we're Consulting closely about
02:30:50
next steps uh and the continued defense
02:30:53
of Israel what is what does secretary uh
02:30:55
Austin think about the potential for an
02:30:57
Israeli response here does he would he
02:31:00
urge them without saying what he said in
02:31:02
the call necessarily but what are his
02:31:04
feelings about the potential would he
02:31:05
urge them restraint or well look you
02:31:08
know if you if you take a step back here
02:31:09
we fully support Israel's right to
02:31:11
defend itself you just saw a a you know
02:31:14
very significant uh ballistic missile
02:31:17
attack by Iran against Israel uh and so
02:31:20
you know we'll continue to work
02:31:22
alongside them to support their defense
02:31:25
um we of course do not want to see a
02:31:27
wider regional conflict you've heard us
02:31:29
say that many times and we'll continue
02:31:31
to work towards that end um but we also
02:31:33
fully understand uh the fact that uh
02:31:36
this was a significant attack by Iran
02:31:38
and so we're going to continue to
02:31:39
consult closely uh and we're going to
02:31:41
continue to support their defense let me
02:31:43
go to Laura thank you just a couple
02:31:45
clarifications do you say that the US
02:31:48
destroyers had CED or shot down the
02:31:50
missiles or just that they fired I said
02:31:52
that they fired approximately a dozen
02:31:54
interceptors uh against the incoming
02:31:56
Iranian missiles okay and um were there
02:31:58
any US aircraft that sent that shot
02:32:01
interceptors at IR um what I've read out
02:32:04
is what participated in the defense of
02:32:06
Israel okay and then sorry just one more
02:32:09
can you say if there were any drones or
02:32:10
cruise missiles that were involved in
02:32:12
the again still assessing it right now
02:32:14
it appears it was uh ballistic missiles
02:32:17
uh no drones but again we'll continue to
02:32:19
assess let me go to Joseph and then
02:32:20
we'll come here thank you um just wanted
02:32:22
to turn to the Israeli invasion in
02:32:25
Lebanon um for the past couple months
02:32:27
the department and the secretary have
02:32:28
called for deescalation um you guys have
02:32:32
voiced your opposition to any ground
02:32:34
incursion invasions limited
02:32:37
operations after we found out that um
02:32:40
the Israeli Strike last week killed the
02:32:42
hisbah chief Hass it seems like the tone
02:32:45
changed um from the statements last
02:32:48
night the department secretary said they
02:32:50
supported what Israel is doing so so
02:32:53
what changed for for for a change in in
02:32:55
that tone and that stance from the
02:32:57
Department yeah I think uh the biggest
02:33:00
thing Joseph is um we fully support
02:33:02
Israel's right to defend itself against
02:33:04
Hezbollah uh as we understand it uh they
02:33:07
will be conducting limited operations to
02:33:10
destroy Hezbollah infrastructure that's
02:33:12
a raid along the border there that could
02:33:14
be used to threaten Israeli citizens and
02:33:17
so um we're continuing to consult
02:33:20
uh with the Israelis to to better
02:33:22
understand how they intend to go forward
02:33:23
obviously I'd refer you to them to talk
02:33:26
uh or ask questions about you know
02:33:27
details regarding those operations um
02:33:30
but you know we fully understand uh as
02:33:33
part of their overall efforts to return
02:33:35
people home uh that they do need to
02:33:37
address those threats that are along the
02:33:39
border there uh and so um all that to
02:33:42
say we will continue to consult uh with
02:33:44
the Israelis and other partners in the
02:33:46
region uh long term about how we can uh
02:33:50
ultimately deescalate those tensions uh
02:33:53
and uh get to a ceasefire have they
02:33:55
asked for any help from you guys doing
02:33:57
whatever it is they want to do no yes
02:34:00
sir okay uh were the United States uh
02:34:03
surprised by the scale of the Iranian
02:34:06
attack on Israel well look like I said
02:34:08
before um we've been monitoring this for
02:34:11
a while uh Iran had been very public uh
02:34:15
about its threats to uh retaliate uh and
02:34:18
so it's it's something that we've been
02:34:19
and monitoring uh certainly this was a
02:34:22
significant attack uh probably about
02:34:25
twice the the size in terms of scope uh
02:34:28
of what we saw earlier um but again
02:34:30
we're still assessing the outcomes of
02:34:32
this uh and and as I highlighted at the
02:34:34
top uh we certainly condemn this
02:34:36
Reckless attack this direct attack
02:34:38
against uh Israel and we'll continue to
02:34:41
uh support Israel's defense several uh
02:34:43
Israeli media spoke about a respond
02:34:45
tonight the you know Israeli respond
02:34:47
tonight to this attack
02:34:50
uh including some not just Iran some
02:34:52
other Middle Eastern uh countries uh
02:34:56
will the United States be assisting the
02:34:59
Israelis in their respond well I'm not
02:35:01
going to speculate about hypotheticals
02:35:04
I'd refer you to the Israelis to talk
02:35:06
about you know I'm asking about would
02:35:08
will the Americans help them with yeah
02:35:10
with the well what you're asking me is
02:35:11
if they're going to do something and
02:35:13
what I'm saying is I'm not going to
02:35:14
speculate about what or if they may do
02:35:17
uh as I highlighted to several of your
02:35:18
colleagues were Consulting closely with
02:35:20
the Israelis in terms of next steps uh
02:35:23
with the emphasis being the defense of
02:35:25
Israel so let me go to this side of the
02:35:26
room or uh essentially a followup to
02:35:30
that question is the US willing to
02:35:32
strike Iran in response to this are you
02:35:34
are you putting that on or off the table
02:35:36
well look ar again I don't want to get
02:35:38
into hypotheticals I think I was very
02:35:40
clear at the top uh that should uh US
02:35:43
forces be targeted by Iran or its
02:35:46
proxies will take necessary steps to
02:35:48
defend our people and and I think we've
02:35:50
also been very clear that we're going to
02:35:52
uh support uh the defense of Israel and
02:35:55
so I'm not going to get into theoretical
02:35:58
or uh speculative operations at this
02:36:00
stage other than to say um you know we
02:36:03
mean what we say and we say what we mean
02:36:05
and then what a followup question Iran
02:36:07
claims to have used a new fat missile
02:36:10
which is supposed to be a Hypersonic
02:36:11
ballistic missile can you assess whether
02:36:13
they did use uh new and advanced
02:36:15
Weaponry in this attack and whether they
02:36:17
learned from the April attack uh again
02:36:19
we're still assessing uh the attack and
02:36:21
the outcomes and so you know we may have
02:36:23
more to provide later um but I don't
02:36:25
have anything on that right now Dan uh
02:36:27
thanks for your time uh two questions
02:36:29
please um on secretary Austin's
02:36:31
statement last night he referred to uh
02:36:34
being supportive of uh operations along
02:36:37
the border uh is he open to uh Israel
02:36:41
using operations on both sides of the
02:36:43
Border along the border was a little
02:36:45
vague there um well I think I'd go back
02:36:48
uh to how I responded to Joseph right we
02:36:51
understand uh and support Israel's right
02:36:53
to defend itself against Hezbollah as we
02:36:56
highlighted in the readout we understand
02:36:58
that part of that is dismantling some of
02:37:00
the attack infrastructure that Hezbollah
02:37:02
has uh built along the border uh
02:37:05
certainly again we don't want to see
02:37:07
this um you know broaden into wider
02:37:09
regional conflict but we understand
02:37:11
again uh that that what Israel is doing
02:37:14
are limited operations to destroy that
02:37:17
attack infrastructure uh and then enable
02:37:20
citizens on both sides of the border to
02:37:22
to return home um ultimately at the end
02:37:25
of the day we do think that a diplomatic
02:37:27
resolution is the only way to achieve
02:37:30
lasting stability and security across
02:37:32
the Israel Lebanon border so you know
02:37:33
we're going to continue to work to that
02:37:35
end but we also again understand
02:37:37
Israel's need to defend its Hill and
02:37:39
then a follow uh the state department
02:37:41
read out uh a report on a attack on uh
02:37:46
diplomatic facility at Baghdad airport
02:37:48
last night um have you seen any other
02:37:51
attacks uh on US forces uh I guess since
02:37:54
Friday uh this one would seem to be on a
02:37:56
diplomatic facility but uh be it in the
02:37:59
last day particularly at this heightened
02:38:01
time of tension uh or just broadly over
02:38:03
the last couple days yeah as of right
02:38:05
now I'm not aware of any additional
02:38:07
attacks thanks sir um the Iron Dome how
02:38:12
effective is it against uh ballistic
