99% of the missiles that were fired at00:00:48
Israel back in April were intercepted00:00:51
this is double the size that's a huge00:00:53
test of Israel's resources remember00:00:55
you've got American Service Personnel on00:00:57
the ground there as well as American00:00:59
citizens you got the US Embassy and00:01:01
obviously lotss of other foreign00:01:02
Nationals as well so this will be a00:01:04
terrifying night for many people we're00:01:07
hearing the sounds of explosions again00:01:08
it's hard at this point to know whether00:01:10
these are intercepts uh or whether some00:01:13
of these missiles are actually going00:01:14
through so to stress we know that this00:01:16
first wave of attacks is now underway00:01:19
we're told there could be four and this00:01:20
first wave is over a 100 ballistic00:01:23
missiles there could be as many as 25000:01:25
in total Israel has warned that there00:01:27
will be a strong response to Iran it's00:01:30
been planning this uh uh to to how to00:01:32
retaliate for a long time but especially00:01:35
that's been ramped up ever since Hassan00:01:37
nasarella was killed people in this part00:01:39
of the world here in Lebanon have been00:01:41
waiting for an Iranian response many00:01:43
people have been crying out for it00:01:44
especially in the Shia world there's a00:01:47
lot of pressure on Iran to try and00:01:48
respond because it's proxies here in00:01:50
Lebanon and elsewhere uh certainly Hamas00:01:53
in Gaza have been under immense pressure00:01:55
from Israel trying to break this00:01:57
so-called axis of resistance and this is00:02:00
the response from Iran but but a huge00:02:02
gamble by Iran and a very dangerous00:02:04
night for00:02:05
Israel and as you mentioned uh prime00:02:08
minister Benjamin Netanyahu made it very00:02:10
clear when he was in New York uh just00:02:12
last week Ian saying if indeed Iran was00:02:16
to strike that they could absolutely00:02:18
expect for Israel to strike back we are00:02:21
following right now if you are just00:02:22
tuning in ABC News has now learned our00:02:25
Ian panel confirming uh that Iran has00:02:28
just launched a retali atory missile00:02:30
attack targeting Israel our Matt Gutman00:02:33

have been able to take cover you are in00:02:38
a shelter bring us up to date what do00:02:40
you know at this00:02:42
moment here about 90 minutes ago the00:02:45
first alert started to go out on00:02:46
people's cell phones Nationwide alerting00:02:49
them to start getting towards sheltered00:02:51
areas bomb shelters not to congregate00:02:53
and over the past 15 minutes they have00:02:55
become much more frequent then we heard00:02:57
the announcement from the IDF that00:02:59
Iran's missile attack has begun and a00:03:02
short time later we got those messages00:03:04
in our phone evacuate immediately move00:03:06
as soon as you can to any kind of bomb00:03:09
shelter um we heard the sirens a short00:03:11
time after that I'll give you a sense of00:03:12
where we are it's just a room in this00:03:14
hotel you can see uh it's got an air00:03:16
vent as well we're perfectly safe where00:03:18
we are we have the rest of our team here00:03:21
on the other side um but this is what00:03:23
most of Israel looks like right now we00:03:25
don't know how many missiles we hear 10000:03:27
it could be more in the coming hours00:03:30
that remains to be determined uh just as00:03:32
we were running into the shelter I saw00:03:34
some of those interceptors go up into00:03:36
the atmosphere to try to take out those00:03:39
missiles it is possible that there have00:03:41
been hits and the IDF has said all day00:03:44
that they're preparing for this and that00:03:46
the air defenses are solid they worked00:03:48
in the past uh in April knocking out 99%00:03:51
of the missiles drones and cruise00:03:53
missiles fired from Iran but the Ida00:03:56
saying it's not hermetic uh we00:03:58
understand at this point that several00:03:59
major Israeli military bases in the Tel00:04:02
Aviv area in in the South were targeted00:04:05
they were evacuated earlier today uh in00:04:08
recent hours it was known that that was00:04:10
likely what Iran is going to Target um00:04:12
unclear the damage right now we're00:04:15
inside unable to get uh bulletins but00:04:17
Israel is obviously bracing for a very00:04:19
very long night and it happens Kira on00:04:21
the back of what appears to be a00:04:23
shooting attack just about a mile from00:04:25
where we are um two armed men entering a00:04:28
train we understand it was a terrorist00:04:29
attack according to police shooting a00:04:31
number of people several of them have00:04:33
been critically wounded so a very00:04:35
jarring night for Israelis here after00:04:38
those successes in Lebanon over the past00:04:40
a couple of weeks and the siren still00:04:42

clearly a significant escalation uh that00:05:01
means a significant amount of risks and00:05:05
the the looming question of how whyde00:05:07
this war could00:05:09
become exactly and I think what the Us00:05:13
official who I spoke to today the senior00:05:15
Us official the greatest concern is that00:05:18
some of those missiles will get through00:05:20
as we have been reporting in the last00:05:22
little while 99% of them were00:05:24
intercepted in April but there is fear00:05:28
that that will not hold this time and00:05:31
that indeed would point to a wider War00:05:34
uh Iran launching perhaps as many as 25000:05:39
missiles as we've said towards Israel00:05:41
they are certainly aware of the Iron00:05:43
Dome and that the US also has defense00:05:46
mechanisms up as well there is a00:05:49
possibility some of those missiles will00:05:51
get through and what kind of damage they00:05:53
would do uh will really look towards00:05:56
what kind of response Israel makes Us00:05:59
official told me it is a 100% certainty00:06:03
that Israel will respond to this and in00:06:06
a vigorous way even if those missiles do00:06:08
not get through but if there are00:06:10
injuries if people are injured if00:06:12
infrastructure is taken out if any part00:06:15
of those air bases is taken out this00:06:17
will significantly increase this the00:06:20
chances of a wider War uh and that00:06:23
response again we don't know when that00:06:26
response will be but Israel is taking00:06:28
this slow it also00:06:30
K they decided not to make a preemptive00:06:33
strike even Israel even though they knew00:06:36
these missiles were coming uh Iran00:06:39
taking that first hit and another thing00:06:43
we have to remember Kira is we are just00:06:46
days away from the anniversary of00:06:48
October 7th when Hamas entered Israel00:06:51
and conducted that horrific terrorist00:06:53
attack on Israel uh and this is the00:06:56
Fallout from all of00:06:57
that and and just look looking at the00:07:00

uh took on that horrendous uh attack00:07:10
killing all those innocent people during00:07:12

commanders uh within Hamas uh other00:07:28
political leaders throughout other uh00:07:31
countries and then just in September the00:07:33

leaders and Lebanon all the way to just00:07:40
uh last week and hezbollah's Commander00:07:42
nazala uh Hassan NASA killed in that00:07:46

running in the streets looking like they00:08:29
were looking for something in a bus just00:08:32
downstairs this country is on tendor00:08:34
hooks right now it's hard to describe00:08:36
how intense the feeling is for so many00:08:38
Israelis who've been running in and out00:08:39
of these bomb shelters over the past uh00:08:41
I guess half an hour or so no reports00:08:44
yet about direct hits we don't know00:08:47
about damage but again as the IDF has00:08:49
been saying we're just going to round00:08:50
this corner um their missile defense00:08:53
system as robust as it is also developed00:08:56
with take the other one also developed00:08:58
with the United States stes does not00:09:00
provide a hermetic seal against these00:09:02
ballistic missiles coming from Iran so00:09:05
it's presumed that some of them might00:09:06
get through um we don't know how long00:09:09
this is going to be going on Martha00:09:11
reported earlier that a very large00:09:12
number of missiles is inbound towards00:09:15
Israel the Israeli government of course00:09:17
has said it will retaliate we've seen00:09:20
what they've been able to do in Lebanon00:09:22
against his Bala over the past couple of00:09:24
weeks the intelligence apparatus is00:09:27
working very well I would say that their00:09:29
success according to them has been00:09:31
unprecedented it's unclear what they00:09:33
might have in store for Iran but what00:09:36
has been quite obvious over the past00:09:38
weeks and months is that they have been00:09:40
able to infiltrate the Iranian00:09:42
intelligence system and the government00:09:43
as well so they know what the vulnerable00:09:45
points are we don't know when the00:09:47
retaliation might come it might not be00:09:49
immediate but again right now everybody00:09:51
in Israel continues to brace and hunker00:09:53
down in their bomb shelters across this00:09:56
country we don't even know the scope of00:09:58
the missile launches at this point don't00:10:00
know how many are intercepted but00:10:02
clearly this is a more significant and00:10:04
larger barrage than we saw in April Iran00:10:07
is trying to clearly send a message00:10:10
after its main proxy Hezbollah in00:10:11
Lebanon has been nearly decimated by00:10:14
Israel's attacks over the past couple of00:10:16
weeks G you know we talk about the last00:10:19
year we're coming up on on marking00:10:22
October 7th uh year since Hamas attacked00:10:24
Israel let me ask you this as well as00:10:27
you are there in Tel Aviv uh Matt do you00:10:31
believe there's also a significance to00:10:33
striking so close to a high holiday I00:10:36
mean Jewish New Year starts its Sundown00:10:40
tomorrow I think there is Kira I think00:10:43
Jewish New Year starts tomorrow it is00:10:44
the biggest holiday in Israel it's sort00:10:47
of like Christmas and New Year's in one00:10:49
here it's followed by y kapor uh a few00:10:52
days later which is the day of atonement00:10:54
in Israel and that is the anniversary on00:10:56
the Jewish calendar of the October 7th00:10:58
attack so there might00:10:59
some symbolism there as well we don't00:11:01
exactly know what is in the mind of the00:11:03
Iranian regime right now we do know that00:11:05
they feel humiliated after the round of00:11:08
attacks um by Israel on Iranian assets00:11:11
across the Middle East uh in Yemen we00:11:14
saw the houthis being barage at the Huda00:11:16
Port uh blown up Hezbollah in um Lebanon00:11:21
has been attacked severely um they are00:11:23
in complete disarray and Iran clearly00:11:25
felt like it needed some sort of00:11:27
response and it's unclear this will be00:11:29
the final response what does seem00:11:31
apparent though is that they broadcast00:11:33
that they were targeting military bases00:11:36
military installations and that the00:11:38
attacks are coming later at night means00:11:41
there's probably less traffic it seems00:11:43
that they are also trying to mitigate00:11:44
possible civilian casualties seems we00:11:47
don't know that for sure but that was00:11:48
the motus operandi in the previous00:11:50
attack as well which came overnight um00:11:52
unclear exactly what is in the mind of00:11:54
Iran but clearly they are trying to send00:11:57
a message to Israel and the next step is00:11:59
going to be a very difficult one but00:12:01
just to go back to October 7th Kira you00:12:03
mentioned the symbolism there Israel was00:12:05
just starting to recover from the00:12:08
horrors of October 7th and the00:12:10
humiliation that its own intelligence00:12:12
system and its own military suffered at00:12:14
the hands of Hamas that surprise attack00:12:16
that left over 12200 Israelis dead and00:12:20
they had just started to feel like00:12:21
they've regained traction um and with00:12:24
what happened in Lebanon and the new00:12:26
assault there the ability to clear a00:12:28
part of Southern Lebanon without Israeli00:12:30
casualties so far um so this is still00:12:33
rolling and as Martha warned there is a00:12:35
significant concern here of a greater00:12:37
Regional War breaking out because of the00:12:39
attacks tonight hereira and Martha let00:12:42
me take it to you as we look at uh the00:12:45
two waves that are supposed to take uh00:12:48
place here uh and the targets including00:12:52
uh air bases in addition to Massad00:12:55
headquarters do we think that there are00:12:57
U us Personnel at any of those air bases00:13:00

Personnel at some of those bases in00:13:05
Israel and again the Defense Forces are00:13:08
up as as solid as they possibly can be I00:13:13
think what you have seen and Matt00:13:14
mentioned this as well the Intelligence00:13:17
on Hezbollah has been remarkable the00:13:19
Israelis have really concentrated on00:13:21
that since00:13:24
2006 and have significantly harmed the00:13:27
Hezbollah structure I'm just back from00:13:30
Israel I arrived in Israel the day those00:13:32
P those pagers went off in Lebanon it's00:13:35
quite extraordinary I'm actually on a00:13:36
train to New York City right now and I00:13:38
am still getting those alerts from Tel00:13:40
Aviv uh on an app on my phone to take00:13:43
cover take cover as these missiles00:13:45
approach Tel Aviv and other places00:13:48
around Israel again this is expected00:13:51
according to a senior official to come00:13:53
in waves so you may see dozens and00:13:56
dozens or perhaps a hundred in this00:13:57
first wave and then more00:13:59
after that and they will assess the00:14:01
damage as soon as they possibly can the00:14:05
Israelis and to calibrate their response00:14:07
I am told by a senior official that one00:14:09
of the responses will be on energy00:14:11
structure in Iran they will certainly00:14:14
try to cause damage to Iran SK and00:14:18

Iran wants to hit um what would it take00:14:46
in this scenario right now for the US to00:14:50
take a bigger role would it mean are US00:14:55
forces uh in any way shape or form uh00:14:58
being being hurt within this conflict00:15:01
how do you see the US playing a bigger00:15:03
role here if at00:15:05
all yeah sure I think that the US is00:15:08
doing what they did in April right now00:15:10
uh we'll see what happens after the00:15:11
attack is over but remember we have uh00:15:14
US Navy ships offshore of Israel that00:15:17
have the ability to bring down Iranian00:15:19
ballistic missiles we also have some of00:15:21
that ability in Jordan uh if any of00:15:23
these attacks are with cruise missiles00:15:26
there are us squadrons who are based in00:15:28
Jordan who were key instrumental last00:15:31
time in stopping some of those attacks00:15:33
back in April uh we also have ships in00:15:36
the Red Sea so to some degree uh the US00:15:38
has said that they will help defend uh00:15:41
Israel so we just don't know how much00:15:43
involvement uh that that will be now00:15:45
just watching the video uh I think that00:15:48
what Matt and Ian and Martha have been00:15:50
talking about about this uh concern00:15:52
about the incoming uh Iranian missiles00:15:55
overwhelming Israeli defenses may be00:15:58
coming to pass unconfirmed but it does00:16:00
look like there are some impacts around00:16:02
uh Tel Aviv uh we'll have to wait to uh00:16:05
to confirm that but the number of00:16:07
missiles incoming has always been the00:16:09
concern there are three layers of00:16:12
Defense within Israel we all know about00:16:13
the Iron Dome which is actually lower00:16:15
altitude there's a midlevel kind of00:16:17
capability called David slang and then00:16:19
the very high altitude that will00:16:21
actually intercept these Iranian00:16:23
ballistic missiles in outer space is00:16:25
called Arrow so it's a layer defense but00:16:28
again so many um incoming missiles that00:16:31
we do have to be concerned about the00:16:33
threat of uh overwhelming and saturating00:16:36

these attacks and protect American00:17:10

Mary well we certainly know that the00:17:15
White House and the president are00:17:16
monitoring all of this extremely closely00:17:19
the president and the vice president00:17:20
they are convening that meeting as you00:17:22
mentioned with the National Security00:17:23
team at the White House earlier this00:17:25
morning and we learned from a senior00:17:27
White House official this morning that00:17:29
the US is actively supporting defensive00:17:31
preparations to defend Israel against00:17:33
this bar attack and then that key line00:17:37
the the White House official saying a00:17:38
direct military attack from Iran against00:17:40
Israel will carry severe consequences00:17:43
for Iran of course lots of questions now00:17:45
about what that means uh we have of00:17:48
course seen the president in recent days00:17:50
speak out forcefully on this you know00:17:53
adamant that an allout war in the Middle00:17:55
East has to be avoided the big question00:17:57
is how is you can continue to see the00:18:00

escalation well I think we can just say00:18:19
this has escalated and whether anyone00:18:22
can put a lid on it is an open question00:18:24
what we're seeing right now is you can't00:18:26
see it clearly on the camera is the red00:18:27
dots of tracer fire going into the sky00:18:30
from the southern suburbs this is Dua00:18:32
this is Hezbollah stronghold the area00:18:34
that's been repeatedly hammered by the00:18:36
Israelis over the last couple of weeks00:18:38
and people are out on the streets00:18:39
celebrating remember Iran set up this00:18:42
so-called axis of resistance it was00:18:44
Hamas it was Hezbollah other groups as00:18:47
well especially uh in Iraq some of the00:18:49
Shia militias which are pro-iranian as00:18:51
well and uh we're getting reports again00:18:53
not verified in any way that perhaps00:18:55
there's been some incident near an air00:18:57
base uh in Iraq we say saw an attempted00:19:00
attack yesterday by Iranian pro-iranian00:19:02
militias on a base that believed to00:19:05
house US forces so for many people00:19:08
certainly on this side of the Border00:19:10
this will give them sucker they feel00:19:12
that they will be emboldened uh by00:19:14
what's happening now in Israel that00:19:16
they're being supported Iran basically00:19:18
set up Hezbollah um and and it has been00:19:21
the major thorn in Israel side other00:19:23
than Iran itself uh as Matt said they've00:19:26
been severely weakened uh over the last00:19:29
few few weeks with the pager attacks00:19:31
then the death of nasala and these00:19:33
targeted assassinations almost its00:19:34
entire leadership has has basically been00:19:38
erased so hezb has been all at Sea we00:19:40
know that Israel has now moved across00:19:42
the border here so just step back and00:19:44
think about this for a moment you00:19:46
mentioned this yourself what began as00:19:48
this terrible attack inside Israel on00:19:50
the kibot Sim at the music festival then00:19:53
grew to that attack in Gaza then we saw00:19:56
it stretch to the West Bank Hezbollah00:19:58
joined that uh that that attack on00:20:01
Israeli forces pretty much for the last00:20:03
year and now Israel has responded in00:20:05
force you know we're talking about 10000:20:08
missiles here I mean Lebanon has00:20:10
received thousands uh of attacks over00:20:13
the last week or so uh parts of this00:20:15
country totally decimated over a million00:20:17
around a million people have been forced00:20:19
on their homes and the casualties are00:20:21
something like 1,600 so again many00:20:25
people certainly here who are pro00:20:26
Hezbollah will say this is is payback00:20:29
for Israel and there will be many other00:20:31
people in Iraq as well and in Syria uh00:20:34
and probably in Yemen who will also00:20:36
share that view and they will feel00:20:38
emboldened by this uh so attacks in the00:20:41
Red Sea are possible attacks on us00:20:43
interests in Iraq are possible further00:20:45
fire from Hezbollah into Israel uh you00:20:48
know this this fear that this could00:20:50
develop into a wider conflict it's kind00:20:52
of happening it's just whether when00:20:55
Israel responds which it will do to the00:20:57
Iranian attack whether a lid can be put00:20:59
on it as happened after April in some00:21:02
senses it was calibrated I'm not00:21:04
convinced that this looks calibrated in00:21:06
the same way and especially given the00:21:08
Israeli warnings so we really could be00:21:10
about to see the start of something much00:21:12
bigger I don't want to scare Monga but00:21:14
the risks now when you start having00:21:16
missiles flying into Israel uh attacks00:21:19
here attacks in Iran attacks in Iraq uh00:21:22
then things start to look potentially00:21:24

deconfliction that happens with those00:26:56

missile itself and the Damage that they00:27:00
can cause it really depends on what is00:27:02
loaded in the Warhead right it can be a00:27:05
chemical or biological weapon it can00:27:06
have a significant amount of um of00:27:10
ammunition of uh explosives and that00:27:13
also determines how far these missiles00:27:14
go so if you want them to go farther you00:27:16
load them with less explosives um and00:27:19
that's what we don't know yet what was00:27:21
on these things we don't think that00:27:22
there's any threat of chemical00:27:24
biological or Atomic Warfare at all at00:27:26
this point but how much explosives00:27:28
loaded on them how far did they go and00:27:30
what specific targets did they hit we00:27:32
know that some pieces of those missiles00:27:35
have hit Israel we don't know where and00:27:38
what kind of damage and whether there00:27:39
were casualties at this point but again00:27:42
loaded fully with a lot of explosives of00:27:44

here is that a ballistic missile um00:28:24
carries between about 1,000 and 2,000 lb00:28:26
of high explosive if that is in fact the00:28:29
the payload but the other part of this00:28:31

it's probably going several mock almost00:28:36
5 six seven by the time it re-enters the00:28:39
atmosphere uh and then that uh that00:28:42
momentum of all that explosive is what00:28:44
uh creates such damage when they do00:28:46
impact here but again the Israelis have00:28:49
the ability to knock these kinds of00:28:50
missiles down it just depends on how00:28:52
many are incoming uh they're very00:28:55
expensive to have a ballistic missile uh00:28:57
defense00:28:58
uh and so the numbers are limited uh so00:29:01
we'll see how many gotten through they00:29:03
also have the ability to look and see00:29:05
where the impact would be um anticipated00:29:08
so if a ballistic missile was going to00:29:10
land in what they knew was an00:29:12
unpopulated area the computer within the00:29:15
firing unit would say up I'm not going00:29:17
after that one because I know it's going00:29:18
to land harmlessly so they have the00:29:20

about whether the the missile is going00:29:24

flood of the Iranian economy the life00:31:16
blood of the Iranian government of the00:31:18
regime is based on oil money who's the00:31:21
biggest consumer of that oil China so00:31:24

Iran uh well K I think that um the White00:46:41
House has has said that the Israelis00:46:43
have at least relate to them that there00:46:44
will be economic targets uh remember00:46:47
that the real um threat to Israel is the00:46:50
Iranian nuclear program and that has00:46:52
been developing and the ability for the00:46:55
Iranians to create what's called a00:46:57
breakout capability to be able to to00:47:00
build nuclear weapon in a short period00:47:02
of time uh is is very close and very00:47:05
near at hand uh you are seeing these00:47:07
ballistic missiles tonight raining down00:47:09
on Israel that theoretically could be00:47:12
the same kind of ballistic missiles that00:47:13
could carry one of those nuclear00:47:15
warheads so as Obi was noting at some00:47:18
point this is going to have to come to a00:47:20
head at least in the eyes of the Israeli00:47:22
uh government and the Israeli military00:47:24
that they cannot continue to allow Iran00:47:27
to develop a nuclear weapon capability00:47:29
that would directly threaten Israel in00:47:31
the future so there may be some attempts00:47:34
to go after some of the nuclear programs00:47:36
within Iran the problem for Israel is00:47:39
that most of these nuclear programs and00:47:41
their their um centrifuges are are00:47:43
buried very deeply uh Israel does not00:47:46
have heavy bombers to carry deep00:47:48
penetrating Warheads or the kinds of00:47:49
Munitions that would be able to take out00:47:51
those nuclear facilities so uh they can00:47:54
take out things around those nuclear00:47:55
facilities they can take out the uh oil00:47:58
capabilities that uh that the Iranian00:48:00
economy relies on uh they can take out00:48:03
various uh parts of the regime the uh00:48:05
various uh they can go after H himself00:48:09
uh but the ability to take care of the00:48:12
real problem which is nuclear weapons uh00:48:15
is going to be quite a challenge for the00:48:17

military you mentioned H many I mean is00:48:23
there a scenario here where Israel00:48:25
strikes the leadership of Iran before00:48:30
anything else or does this go in phases00:48:32
does this does this start by by taking00:48:35

just daily daily functions uh for the00:48:45
country to to run or is there a00:48:48
possibility here depending on what00:48:50
happens inside Israel that Israel May00:48:53

well remember that they went after NASA00:48:59
and lot of people didn't think they were00:49:01
going to go after nasala so uh how many00:49:03
apparently right after n was was uh00:49:06
killed uh went into hiding and so00:49:09
Israel's ability to track senior leaders00:49:11
in Iran is not as good as it is to track00:49:14
Hezbollah leaders in Lebanon which is00:49:16
right next door so they would have the00:49:18
problem actually finding where he was00:49:21
remember that the distance between Iran00:49:24
and Israel is significant uh it's the00:49:26
same distances between Houston and Los00:49:29
Angeles so the ability to fly airplanes00:49:31
and be able to take real-time targeting00:49:34
uh is not the same as in Lebanon so the00:49:36
challenge for the Israeli military is00:49:38
much greater uh in Iran I do think00:49:40
though that what you're going to see is00:49:42
um something where the Israelis are00:49:44
going to take their time there's no need00:49:45
for them to rush they can assess the00:49:48
damage take care of what's going on they00:49:49
still have a campaign going on in both00:49:51
Gaza and Lebanon there's no rush on what00:49:54
they need to do in terms of retaliation00:49:56
there will probably discussions with00:49:57
allies to include the United States uh00:50:00
to make sure that the um response does00:50:02
not uh go beyond the uh Iranian borders00:50:06
uh but again I think that there are all00:50:07
sorts of options because the Iranian00:50:09
defenses are are essentially helpless uh00:50:12
in the face of the kinds of military00:50:14
capabilities that the Iranians have or00:50:16

how many and many senior leaders is uh00:51:25
wise at this theyve been watching what's00:51:28
happened with Hezbollah and Hamas and00:51:30
seeing what is happening so we were told00:51:33
as of yesterday by a senior official00:51:35
that many of those leaders were already00:51:38
in hiding I think they likely knew what00:51:41
was coming uh that certainly on their00:51:44
part and they likely know what is coming00:51:46
now so that will probably continue uh00:51:48
Iran and Steve uh rightly pointed out00:51:51
doesn't really have the defense systems00:51:53
in place and depending on what these00:51:56
Israelis try to strike that will make a00:51:59
huge difference in perhaps we'll see00:52:02
another Iranian response but right now00:52:05
uh they know Hezbollah was vulnerable00:52:07
they wanted Iran wanted their other pry00:52:09
group coues to try and hit Israel it00:52:12
didn't really work and I think that's00:52:14
one of the reasons uh of many that Iran00:52:17
finally carried out these strikes00:52:20
themselves and again uh more waves are00:52:23
expected they don't believe this first w00:52:26
AOW strikes will end it and and you've00:52:29
also seen and over the weekend we talked00:52:32
to us officials and John Kirby in00:52:34
particular about the United States00:52:37
wanting to deescalate this situation but00:52:40
we certainly have not seen that uh I did00:52:43
ask John Kirby who is the white house uh00:52:45
spokesman for National Security as you00:52:47
know what he thought about them00:52:50
continuing the fight against Hezbollah00:52:52
and continuing to go after leaders and00:52:54
this ground incur00:52:57
and he said we think they can deescalate00:52:59
and go after Hezbollah all at the same00:53:01
time because clearly Israel continuing00:53:04
the fight against Hezbollah uh felt that00:53:07
Hezbollah and it certainly is uh00:53:08
vulnerable that they should basically00:53:10
get them while they're down and take00:53:12
care of this uh and again this is00:53:15
retaliation for that it's retaliation00:53:17
against Hama but they did get pressure00:53:20
from their proxies uh to do this kind of00:53:22
strike and depending on the damage that00:53:25
will that's when we will see how Israel00:53:28
will respond to this but they will 100%00:53:31
respond to this and not only if if the00:53:34
missiles are intercepted if all the00:53:36

the shrapnel from interceptions that can00:53:40

I was just in Israel last week for about00:53:46
10 days and the atmosphere in Tel Aviv00:53:49
there you know thousands of people out00:53:51
on the street and they haven't seen this00:53:54
intensity for a very long time and the00:53:57
missile strike that was also there right00:53:59
after October 7th and the air rides were00:54:01
constant uh and today it has to be00:54:04
bringing them back to that moment there00:54:06

this point the one thing that he00:54:48

that there will be a response that00:54:52
Israel has a plan and typically what has00:54:54
been happening in the previous attacks00:54:57
like the one against Nala the head of00:55:00
hisbah in Lebanon last week the IDF00:55:04
presents a series of options to the00:55:06
government the cabinet sits over it and00:55:08
then they decide what to do that's what00:55:10
also happened with last night's00:55:11
incursion into Lebanon so the plans are00:55:13
on the table the question is how far00:55:15
does the Israeli government want to take00:55:17
this just yesterday Israel's prime00:55:19
minister Netanyahu spoke publicly in00:55:22
English directing his comments to the00:55:24
Iranian people saying that the regime00:55:27
could fall soon and so one of the things00:55:29
that we begun to hear from Israeli00:55:31
analysts at this point is a call for a00:55:33
strike on the bandar abas oil port and00:55:36
terminal on the Persian Gulf in Iran00:55:39
it's a huge terminal that controls much00:55:41
of the oil that goes into that country00:55:43
and out of that country and if that is00:55:45
hit that would cause catastrophic00:55:47
economic damage to Iran and analysts are00:55:49
telling me it could possibly topple the00:55:51
regime that's how significant it could00:55:53
be that would be a major strike they're00:55:55
also talking about a attacking other00:55:57
possible energy installations as well00:55:59
again this is a cabinet decision as00:56:01

not have to be decided immediately after00:56:06
the last round of missiles hit Israel00:56:09
took a number of days even longer to00:56:11
retaliate and then it was a very00:56:13
restrained response essentially firing a00:56:15

message that Israel can hit whatever it00:56:23
wants whenever it wants without being00:56:25
detected we know that it's not going to00:56:27
be that restrained this time despite uh00:56:29
us efforts and the Biden00:56:31
administration's incredibly uh energetic00:56:33
efforts in recent months to try to Tamp00:56:35
down the tenor of the violence here it's00:56:38
not going to be the case this time a00:56:39
major question though is whether the US00:56:42
assists in any attack on Iran at this00:56:44
point and what kind of assistance that00:56:47
might be if it does happen but clearly00:56:50
the reprisal is on the table one more00:56:52
thing that Martha just mentioned when00:56:53
you have that many missiles coming in00:56:56
and we just had additional interceptors00:56:57
in Jerusalem a few minutes ago it's not00:57:00
just the missiles that are being blown00:57:02
out of the sky it's the interceptors00:57:04
that are exploding to hit them causing a00:57:06
tremendous amount of shrapnel and having00:57:09
been just north of Gaza when some of00:57:11
those Rockets fired from Hamas were00:57:13
coming down and were intercepted was one00:57:16
of the eeriest experiences because you00:57:17
can hear the tinkle of falling shrapnel00:57:20
and metal on the rooftops as it's coming00:57:22
down but now we're talking about bus00:57:24
length missiles and when they come down00:57:27
it can create a significant amount of00:57:28
damage even if High explosives don't00:57:31
detonate anywhere so everybody here is00:57:33
still assessing they're bracing for00:57:35
another possible wave which we're told00:57:38
might happen uh but right now most00:57:40
importantly we're hearing that the IDF00:57:42
at least is not aware of any casualties00:57:44

seems that it's taken a little bit of a00:58:15

central Tel Aviv was evacuated the major00:59:33
base for all of the intelligence for00:59:36
Israel's version of the NSA for the mad00:59:39
for military intelligence north of Tel00:59:40
Aviv was evacuated other bases around00:59:43
the country were that is incredibly00:59:45
unusual I think the only time that may00:59:47
have happened in the past was in 199100:59:49

that the Israelis do not have the the01:02:40
number of aerial tankers that the US01:02:42
does so they can't project power uh in01:02:45
the same mass that they can into Lebanon01:02:48
but I do want to pick up on something01:02:49
that Matt said a couple minutes ago um01:02:52
and about the number of these incoming01:02:54
so if you remember back in April um the01:02:56
Iranians were essentially humiliated in01:02:58
that the Israelis knocked down 99% of01:03:01
all the incoming weapons in that attack01:03:04
they learn from that attack uh I was01:03:06
just looking at one uh01:03:08
social video that was U that's up on on01:03:12
um on social media and it shows I01:03:14
counted 25 impacts somewhere in Israel01:03:17
within one second and so what the01:03:20
Iranians Learned was that they had to01:03:22
overwhelm the Israeli defenses by01:03:24
launching all of these missiles at the01:03:26
same time so that's what they they01:03:28
learned from April and it looks like01:03:30
that they succeeded and many of these01:03:32
missiles may have gotten through don't01:03:34
know what that looks like now we have01:03:36
been covering the ground war in Gaza the01:03:38
ground war in Lebanon those Wars are01:03:41
very infantry Centric um what goes on in01:03:44
terms of missile defense is something01:03:46
that you would see out of a movie um01:03:49
it's usually controlled in a big room in01:03:51
a dark room with lots of screens you01:03:54
have all sorts of radar feeding in data01:03:56
you have multiple systems as mattt01:03:58
alluded to there's a three- tiered01:03:59
missile defense system within Israel all01:04:02
of those computers all of those inputs01:04:04
all those radar inputs are being fused01:04:07
at one point the computer is actually01:04:09
making the decision on when to fire on01:04:11
which Target automatically so things are01:04:14
having to happen so quickly that it's01:04:16
really that the computers themselves are01:04:18
the ones that are defending Israel and01:04:20
sometimes it's going to involve using01:04:22
using us ships uh that may require voice01:04:25
communication but this is all data link01:04:27
it's all zeros and ones and it's a very01:04:29
very different War than what we see on01:04:31
the ground in Gaza or on the ground in01:04:33
Lebanon and again how do you see the us01:04:36
at this point uh playing a role uh we01:04:40
already know that additional troops have01:04:43
been set into the region we know we have01:04:45
uh us uh ships and capabilities uh out01:04:48
in the waterways um at what point does01:04:52
the US um I guess pick up its role01:04:59
we're in election year um we're we're a01:05:01
month and a half out from a very tight01:05:03
election uh I highly doubt that the01:05:06
Biden Administration wants to involve us01:05:09
uh Personnel in a in a shooting match um01:05:12
with with Iran at this point uh it01:05:14
doesn't mean that the US won't defend01:05:16
Israel won't do anything that Iran uh01:05:19
won't defend anything that Iran does uh01:05:21
in terms of follow on attack but I01:05:23
highly doubt that the us is going to get01:05:25
itself involved D in direct attacks01:05:27
against Iran uh I even highly doubt that01:05:30
they'll do things like provide tanker01:05:31
support to the to the Israelis uh just01:05:34
because they don't want to do anything01:05:35
to to upset domestic politics uh but01:05:38
again the Israelis have the capability01:05:40
to do most of what needs to be done01:05:42
they'll take their time they'll pick01:05:44
their targets and they'll have some sort01:05:45
of a strategy uh but uh but there01:05:47
certainly will be something and it's01:05:49
going to uh and it's going to be a new01:05:51
story leading all the way up to the US01:05:53

Nations also issuing a statement saying01:06:49
that the attacks are a legal rational01:06:51
and a legitimate response to Israel's01:06:54
attacks and when they say Israel's01:06:55
attacks they obviously mean Israel's01:06:57
attacks on its allies the proxies01:06:59
Hezbollah here Hamas elsewhere also the01:07:02
hooes in Yemen so there was some sense01:07:05
that this was coming uh they are also01:07:07
issuing very strong warnings cognizant01:07:10
of the risks that Israel is going to01:07:12
respond the very high risk that Israel01:07:14
is going to respond warning them of01:07:16
devastating consequences if they do and01:07:18
I think this is what's praying on01:07:20
everyone's Minds right now um as Matt01:07:23
said we don't know if there's another01:07:24
wave coming some of the state statement01:07:25
seem to suggest that maybe that was the01:07:28
response um but but we'll just have to01:07:30

probably Unthinkable at the moment01:08:08
Israel has already laid out a broad01:08:10
spectrum of potential responses uh you01:08:13
know from from cyber attacks uh to01:08:15
physical attacks to maybe targeting uh01:08:17
specific individuals they've been ready01:08:20
for this for a long time uh they've been01:08:22
planning for this for a long time and01:08:24
Israel has incredible intelligence in01:08:26
Iran uh logistically it's very difficult01:08:29
as Steve said because it is so far away01:08:31
it's not like launching attacks here uh01:08:33
in Lebanon and in Beirut or just across01:08:35
the border that's very close and much01:08:37
easier for Israel to do you need a lot01:08:39
of assets to kind of travel further and01:08:41

obviously feel that they do have a plan01:08:45
in place I think there's absolutely no01:08:47
pressure on Israel they can they can01:08:49
choose when they want to respond01:08:51
remember we had that curious statement01:08:53
from Benjamin Netanyahu in in this video01:08:56
addressed to the Iranian people just01:08:58
yesterday uh where he talked about that01:09:01
they would be free sooner than they01:09:03
expected very curious choice of words uh01:09:07
and telling telling the Iranian people01:09:09
Persian people as he called them that01:09:11
that there was a kinship between them01:09:13
and the Jewish people uh but it was a01:09:15
clear threat to the Iranian leadership01:09:18
that change was coming I think Israel01:09:20
thinks that Iran is a very brittle01:09:22
Society economically uh it's pretty01:09:24
devastated um politically any challenge01:09:27
to the regime whether it's come from01:09:29
from women protesting or it's come from01:09:31
uh uh more other kind of political01:09:33
parties has been crushed by the regime01:09:36
uh people suffer in in Iran without a01:09:38
doubt and I think Israel's assessment is01:09:41
that that can be unpicked quite easily I01:09:43
don't know that that's true because Iran01:09:45
like a lot of other authoritarian01:09:46
regimes has been very successful about01:09:48
controlling its population but if Israel01:09:51
goes after its economic assets if it01:09:53
goes after key leadership if it disrupts01:09:55

young diplomatic family who just arrived01:11:30
in Jerusalem several weeks ago and she01:11:33
texted me and said this is just intense01:11:37
uh my husband said incoming for real and01:11:40
we scurried we couldn't see anything01:11:42
because we were in our shelter I made it01:11:44
a space room with a light that makes the01:11:47
ceiling different colors and stars and01:11:49
put the kids favorite movies on their01:11:51
iPads but we could hear the sirens so01:11:54
loudly and then then the interception01:11:56
booms doing their amazing work it's wild01:11:59
to plan for this prep for this no this01:12:02
can and could happen but when when we're01:12:04
on the floor holding the kids while the01:12:07
booms go off it is a different01:12:09
perspective that is a young American01:12:12

unverified but some of the videos we're01:13:16
seeing are very very dramatic in terms01:13:18
of uh the destruction caused by some of01:13:20
these missiles as Steve mentioned01:13:22
earlier they can cause catastrophic01:13:23
damage even if pieces of them fall not01:13:26
only because of high explosives in them01:13:28
but also because of the momentum they're01:13:30
carrying and the speed that they're01:13:32
traveling again Israel is now bracing01:13:34
for the next round Ian mentioned it also01:13:37
this retaliatory cycle it appears that01:13:39
that is where we are headed next the big01:13:41
decision right now Kira is with the01:13:43
Israeli cabinet they are going to get a01:13:47
series a menu of possible strike options01:13:50
against Iran in the coming hours uh and01:13:53
day or so and at some point in the near01:13:55
future I'm told they're going to make a01:13:57
decision we don't yet know what that01:13:59
will be we don't yet know how severe of01:14:01
a blow they want to level at the Iranian01:14:03
regime right now but this was01:14:05
unprecedented significantly more damage01:14:08
significantly more missiles than we saw01:14:10
in the previous Salvo in April01:14:13

wait and see mode the options Matt uh01:14:19
that Israel has on the table well they01:14:21
have a lot of options clearly the01:14:23
question is how much of a wider War01:14:25
could this turn into the risks the01:14:28

infrastructure uh and all the01:14:37
surrounding uh ways that that Iran01:14:40

expecting a total of 240 to 250 missiles01:20:07
from Iran uh also that those missiles01:20:10
are expected to come in two waves01:20:13
hitting multiple targets Israel says01:20:15
there will be consequences and it indeed01:20:18
has a plan to retaliate the White House01:20:20
saying that President Biden and vice01:20:22
president Harris are in The Situation01:20:24
Room monitoring the attack the president01:20:26
has directed the US military to Aid01:20:28
Israel's defense against Iran's attacks01:20:31
and even one US officials saying that01:20:33
American forces have intercepted Iranian01:20:37
missiles the IDF saying it appears the01:20:39
Rockets have stopped flying for now and01:20:41
it is telling residents they can leave01:20:44
their protected spaces Israeli police01:20:46
say that six people were also killed in01:20:48
a terror shooting attack in Tel Aviv we01:20:50

uh with regard to where we stand as we01:21:01
are sort of in a wait and seee mode and01:21:03
that is waiting to see what exactly01:21:05
Israel is going to do01:21:08
next but we know the first stage is over01:21:11
Kira um Israel has just announced01:21:13
through its Chief military spokesman01:21:15
Daniel hagari that this round is over01:21:18
they do not expect additional missiles01:21:20
to be fired um about 180 missiles fired01:21:23
according to the IDE F the vast majority01:21:25
of them appear to have been intercepted01:21:28
by Israel's very sophisticated air01:21:30
defense system including these um01:21:32
anti-missile missiles that we've been01:21:34
watching go up uh and hit those missiles01:21:36
in midair um but it does appear to be01:21:39
over traffic is moving again people are01:21:41
starting to go about the question is01:21:44
what happens next as you just posed and01:21:47
we don't know I don't think the Israeli01:21:49
cabinet knows what we do understand is01:21:51
that typically how this would function01:21:53
and we know that a plan has plans are01:21:55
already being presented to the Israeli01:21:57
government is that they're going to01:21:59
offer a menu of options from the01:22:01
military you can do this this or this01:22:03
and it really depends on how severe of a01:22:05
blow the Israeli government wants to01:22:07
take against the Iranian regime right01:22:10
now just yesterday Kira if you'll recall01:22:12
uh Israel's prime minister Netanyahu in01:22:14
English addressed the people of Iran01:22:16
directly saying that your regime might01:22:19
top be toppled soon that we don't have a01:22:22
fight with the people of Iran we have a01:22:24
a problem with the regime in Iran and it01:22:28
really this is the question right now01:22:30
how far do they want to take it one01:22:32
thing is clear though the damage is not01:22:34
as extensive as some people had feared I01:22:37
I just got a text message from an01:22:39
analyst said yes some of those missiles01:22:41
managed to penetrate Israel's air01:22:43
defenses and hit military bases and01:22:45
apparently some civilian areas as well01:22:48
but so far we understand that there have01:22:50
been no casualties at least that the IDF01:22:52
is aware of and that is a big deal the01:22:56
more severe the casualties the more01:22:58
severe the damage against sensitive01:22:59
military installations the more01:23:01
ferocious the response and so the less01:23:04
severe this kind of damage the more01:23:07
restraint Israel might be able to show01:23:09
and you can rest assured the Biden01:23:11
Administration is going to try to01:23:12
pressure Israel to hold back as much as01:23:15
it can it does not want a massive01:23:17
Regional War right now uh in the Middle01:23:20
East Kira don't think anybody wants a01:23:22
massive Regional War that's for sure01:23:24
Matt while I have you I mean you mention01:23:27
regime change are we getting ahead of01:23:29
ourself to even start to have that01:23:36
conversation I think so um let's see01:23:38
what the next response is I think the01:23:40
concern is that there might be a01:23:42
retaliatory cycle what we do know and01:23:45
what Israel's um Chief military01:23:48
spokesman has just said is that there01:23:50
will be a response and it will be severe01:23:52
right this is not going to be what01:23:54
happened in April after Israel uh got01:23:57
about 11020 missiles fired from Iran01:24:00
including about 200 drones and cruise01:24:02
missiles they managed to knock most of01:24:03
them out of the sky there is much more01:24:05
damage this time there is a larger01:24:07
number of missiles and Israel is taking01:24:09
this more seriously it responded that01:24:12
time largely due to us pressure with a01:24:15
single missile strike against an Iranian01:24:17
radar installation essentially showing01:24:19
Iran hey we can hit you at your most01:24:21
sensitive installation without you even01:24:23
knowing it and clearly Israel has01:24:25
penetrated the Iranian regime with its01:24:28
intelligence apparatus and mad has01:24:30
incredible Assets in Iran as we saw with01:24:33
the assassination of Hamas leader isma01:24:35
Hanah a couple of months ago in the01:24:38
Iranian revolutionary guard guest house01:24:40
like the holy of holies so if they can01:24:42
penetrate there they can get anyone the01:24:44
question is do they want to do it and01:24:46
how much of an international outcry is01:24:49
Israel willing to withstand to try to01:24:51
topple the regime one thing that I am01:24:53
hearing quite a bit at this point from01:24:55
analysts is that Israel might go after01:24:57
Iran's energy infrastructure possibly01:25:00
something like the bandar Bas Port01:25:02
that's sort a lot the oil comes in and01:25:03
out on the Persian Gulf and taking out a01:25:06
major oil port and terminal could have a01:25:08
significant impact on the Iranian01:25:10
economy which largely relies on oil to01:25:13
sustain itself so that's something that01:25:15

and it seems there seems to be a group01:25:43
of leaders now rallying behind this idea01:25:45
to urge President Biden to strike those01:25:48
oil refineries just one um a tweet that01:25:51
came out from uh Senator Lindsey GR01:25:54
Carolina saying this is a moment of01:25:56
choosing for the Free World regarding01:25:58
Iran the Ayatollah and Iranian regime01:26:00
and religious Nazis who want to destroy01:26:02
the state of Israel their words not mine01:26:05
they want to purify Islam and attack the01:26:07
United States again their words not mine01:26:10
the missile attack against Israel should01:26:12
be the breaking point and I would urge01:26:14
the Biden Administration to coordinate01:26:15
an overwhelming response with Israel01:26:18
starting with Iran's ability to refine01:26:20
oil these oil refineries need to be hit01:26:23
and hit hard because that as the source01:26:24
of cash for this regime to perpetrate01:26:27
their Terror my prayers are with the01:26:29
people of Israel and may God continue to01:26:31

there will be two waves of missile01:26:40
strikes uh into Israel that first wave01:26:43

this urging uh of the president here in01:26:55
the United States to strike those oil01:26:59
refineries I mean you this becoming01:27:03
political is the last thing that's01:27:04
probably needed uh the very least is01:27:07
should be handled by the diplomats but I01:27:09
think unfortunately it's going to be01:27:11
handled by military leaders at least for01:27:13
the foreseeable future uh but for this01:27:15
then to become an issue in the01:27:17
presidential election campaign I think01:27:19
probably would be unfortunate it'd be01:27:20
unfortunate for the Israeli families who01:27:23
just spent the last are terrified hiding01:27:25
in their shelters it'd be deeply01:27:27
unfortunate uh for the almost 1 million01:27:30
people here in Lebanon who've been01:27:31
forced from their homes uh the children01:27:34
the mothers the innocent civilians01:27:36
around this region who become victims of01:27:38
this much wider War uh not of their01:27:41
choosing um I think that will be that01:27:44
pressure though it's interesting Lindsey01:27:45
Graham's uh Lindsey Graham's statement01:27:47
there um what happened in April remember01:27:51
again this was a t kind of tip fortat01:27:54
responds but but the lid was kept on it01:27:57
uh Iran fired at Israel uh and Israel01:28:01
intercepted over 99% of those uh01:28:03
incoming missiles and and Israel01:28:05
responded but it was kind of kept to a01:28:08
certain Tempo there is a huge risk here01:28:11
that that Tempo can't be maintained um01:28:14
you know was this just Iran making a01:28:17
show of force they had to respond in01:28:19
some way after the assassination of is01:28:21

leaders the creators the the supporters01:28:34
um of this so-called axis of resistance01:28:36

Shia groups uh the the pro Iranian01:28:42
groups that operate in Iraq as well as01:28:44
of course Hezbollah here and they've all01:28:46
been looking to Iran ever since nella's01:28:49
assassination just at the start of the01:28:51
weekend for some kind of response so was01:28:53
this just a show of force to say yes01:28:55
we've done our job we saw celebratory01:28:57

there'll be other places certainly in01:29:01
the Shia Crescent uh of countries that01:29:04
stretches from Iran to here in Beirut uh01:29:07
who will be celebrating tonight um you01:29:09
know is that01:29:11
enough is Israel's response going to be01:29:14
kind of tempered I think that's that's01:29:16
the biggest question by far tonight will01:29:19
more sensible heads prevail I think what01:29:22
Lindsey Graham has to say will be music01:29:25
to the ears of Netanyahu and certainly01:29:28
to the right-wing members of his cabinet01:29:30
uh who see this as a moment of Reckoning01:29:32
for all of Israel's enemies and that01:29:34
brings enormous danger brings danger for01:29:36
Israel as we just saw tonight and01:29:38
Israel's citizens uh but it also brings01:29:41
enormous danger for the region it risks01:29:43
drawing in other people now the whole01:29:46
Prospect of the United States being01:29:48
drawn into another Middle East War when01:29:50
it still has troops in Iraq of course uh01:29:52
but nevertheless it it spent years01:29:55
extricating itself from The Quagmire in01:29:58
Iraq and the Quagmire in Afghanistan uh01:30:01
the last thing that the United States01:30:03
needs and even if you listen to to01:30:05
president Trump he's no advocate of us01:30:08
uh involvement in overseas Wars but of01:30:11
course there's always a difference when01:30:12
you start to talk about Israel people01:30:14
start to talk about religion uh involves01:30:16
the Christian far right as well as uh01:30:19
the religious the the Jewish far rights01:30:21
as well um people who advocate for a01:30:24
wider conflict I think are going to have01:30:26
their voices heard at the moment but I01:30:28
think the real danger is that Israel01:30:30
listens to them completely and responds01:30:32
then we're in a whole different ball01:30:33
game Kira and we're still in a wait and01:30:36
see uh for what this wave to on behalf01:30:39
of Iran will look like and exactly what01:30:41
Israel will do uh in retaliation Ian01:30:44

provide additional defensive support if01:31:16
needed they'll protect us forces01:31:18
operating in the region obviously and01:31:20

you think back to what happened in April01:31:23
the us at the time made you know a big01:31:26
point of stressing that while they were01:31:27
helping uh to defend Israel that when it01:31:30
came to the response that the US made01:31:32
very clear they had no role in any01:31:34
offensive operation uh I would not be01:31:36
surprised if you see something similar01:31:38
play out here of course this is you know01:31:40
a different attack different01:31:41
circumstances but the big picture here01:31:43
cannot be lost that this is exactly what01:31:45
the Biden Administration and what01:31:47
President Biden have been trying to01:31:49
avoid for almost a year now this kind of01:31:52
escalation and turmoil in the region01:31:53
this fear of a wider War which which is01:31:56
now very much upon us um but how does01:31:59
the president you know Assist Israel01:32:01
back up our Ally while also not getting01:32:04
the US dragged further into this01:32:05
especially not you know with let's be01:32:07
honest with an election now just around01:32:09
the corner here in the US yeah it's uh01:32:12
the timing of all of this is is uh quite01:32:15

are assets out in the waters uh to help01:34:24
uh and and the president has made it01:34:25
very clear that the US military will01:34:27
help Israel uh defend itself but what do01:34:29
we know at this point after we've01:34:31
witnessed this first wave of missile01:34:33
attacks on behalf of Iran uh what will01:34:37
uh what will be the role of those extra01:34:39
added US troops um and and and what01:34:42
happens next as we wait for Israel to01:34:45
make a decision and do we know uh if our01:34:47
military leaders are in contact um with01:34:51
the IDF or leadership there in Israel01:34:54
well Cara they say that they are01:34:56
certainly in constant contact one of the01:34:58
things that we're just learning now at01:34:59
this hour is that the US did help in01:35:02
intercepting some of these missiles uh01:35:04
you know one of the things that I think01:35:05
was interesting was about 20 minutes01:35:06
before the barrage began we saw a01:35:09
statement come across our emails from01:35:11
the Pentagon saying you know if Iran01:35:14
acts the US and Israel believes that it01:35:16
should endure significant consequences01:35:18
that's a quote significant consequences01:35:20
and and then of course by the time it01:35:22
was in our email inboxes we already01:35:24
seeing the attack play out so now of01:35:25
course the question is uh what will the01:35:27
US role be if any in responding to this01:35:30
attack uh the US saying that top of mine01:35:33
for them in this building the Pentagon01:35:35
officials say are the 40,000 US troops01:35:38
that are in that region we have a lot of01:35:40
troops stationed on ships Iraq and Syria01:35:42
and in drone bases all of them they are01:35:45
very nervous that these uh service01:35:47
members might be caught in the01:35:49
crosshairs they of course want to also01:35:51
defend Israel and Israel's right to01:35:53
defend defend itself they say that that01:35:55
is a very clear message uh but we're01:35:57
going to be hearing from the Pentagon01:35:58
later today and of course I think one of01:35:59
the top questions will be what role will01:36:02
the US play in any kind of retaliation01:36:04
from01:36:06

where we're going01:36:11

Israel now Iran responding with these01:37:09
missile attacks today they say it will01:37:11
be two waves of missile attacks isra01:37:14
Israel now in a wait and see mode to see01:37:17
what that second wave will look like uh01:37:19
and we're in a wait and seee mode too to01:37:22
see exactly what Israel will will do01:37:24

release a statement that I see uh saying01:37:52
that if I win will be peace in the world01:37:54
he hasn't exactly outlined his strategy01:37:57
strategy rather for dealing with the01:37:59
crisis in the Middle East right now so01:38:00
please tell us if Trump uh were indeed01:38:04
uh to win the presidency what exactly01:38:07
does he plan to do about what we're01:38:08
witnessing right now in the Middle East01:38:10
well the thing that I can say with01:38:12
certainty is that this never would have01:38:13
happened if president Donald Trump was01:38:15
in the white house I mean there was a01:38:17
peace he had signed historic Abraham01:38:19
Accords uh and brought historic peace to01:38:21
the Middle East and this truly is01:38:24
weakness from kamla Harris and Joe Biden01:38:26
who have emboldened Iran it's absolutely01:38:28
devastating to see I pray for everyone01:38:31
in Israel right now and certainly all of01:38:33
the correspondents that ABC has covering01:38:36
as as we see this unfold it's absolutely01:38:39
tragic and it's something that the01:38:40
president is going to address he is uh01:38:43
in Wisconsin right now I just got off01:38:45
the phone um on the tarmac and it's01:38:49
something that he is going to address at01:38:50
the top of his remarks at his event in01:38:52

and of course we'll follow that Danielle01:38:55
but I I do want to ask you as his01:38:57
surrogate if he were president right now01:38:59
what would he do again it just never01:39:02
would have happened he's someone who can01:39:04
bring uh everyone to have a seat at the01:39:07

is uh someone again who delivered the01:39:15
historic Abraham Accords and brought01:39:18
peace that nobody thought was possible01:39:21
to the Middle East and so that strength01:39:23
leadership is something that we're01:39:24
missing in the White House and something01:39:26
that we will return to in November in01:39:29
his statement earlier today former01:39:30
president Trump also mentioned the war01:39:32
in Ukraine and Senator Vance has been01:39:34
very outspoken in his opposition to01:39:36
providing funding for Ukraine he's also01:39:38
floated a plan that would allow Russia01:39:40
to keep the Ukrainian territory that is01:39:42
captured something Ukrainian president01:39:44
zinsky calls dangerous but is that plan01:39:46
part of the solution that former01:39:48
president Trump says he has for ending01:39:50
the war between Ukraine and Russia was01:39:53
you know president Trump met with01:39:54
president zilinsky in Trump Tower just01:39:56
recently and the conversation that they01:39:59
had was very simple they need to end01:40:01
this war we need to stop uh the death01:40:04
the destruction that is going on and the01:40:07
promise was that each side would be01:40:09
happy but I don't uh want to get ahead01:40:11
of the president in his01:40:12
plans well Senator Vance uh once said01:40:16
that Trump would veto a nationwide01:40:18
abortion ban I want to talk about what's01:40:20
going to happen tonight and that is the01:40:22
uh the vice presidential uh debate01:40:25
that's going to be taking place as we01:40:26
know during the presidential debate01:40:28
Trump said he had never discussed that01:40:30
with his running mate Vance later said01:40:33
quote learned his lesson about speaking01:40:36
for Trump but why did he say that in the01:40:38
first place and and what do you expect01:40:40
him to say tonight as we take this01:40:42
debate with Governor Tim Walls I think01:40:45
the most important thing to keep in mind01:40:46
as we head into the vice presidential01:40:48
debate tonight is that voters really are01:40:51
yearning to hear about policy uh we01:40:54
learned that obviously from the ABC01:40:56
debate uh that was hosted not long ago01:40:59
that voters want to know what each01:41:00
candidate is going to do on those key01:41:02
issues that polling tells us is top of01:41:04
mind and those issues obviously include01:41:06
the economy uh inflation obviously the01:41:09
Border I think you know I I would01:41:11
imagine CBS is going to Pivot and we're01:41:13
going to talk a lot about what is01:41:16
currently unfolding in the Middle Middle01:41:18
East now and it is these vice01:41:21
presidential nominees challenge to to01:41:23
deliver the message for each of our01:41:25
tickets to voters and obviously uh on01:41:27
the Republican side on the Trump Vance01:41:29
ticket we know uh that there is a track01:41:32
record for a strong economy for a secure01:41:35
border for safety uh and peace through01:41:38
strength at home and abroad well there's01:41:40
a clear divide in the polling right now01:41:42
where men favor uh the Trump Vance01:41:44
ticket and women are favoring Harris and01:41:46
wall Senator Vance has come under Fire01:41:48
as we know for some of his past comments01:41:50
criticizing uh what he called childless01:41:52
cat lady01:41:53
do you think tonight gives him a chance01:41:55
to do a little damage control you know01:41:57
actually um in previous elections for01:42:00
example in the 2016 elections uh the01:42:03
Democrats won female votes by 12 points01:42:05
in the latest CNN poll uh it actually01:42:08
president Trump had cut that margin by01:42:10
two points um so we're doing well in in01:42:13
all polling whether it's Battleground01:42:15
polling whether you look at numbers like01:42:17
with Hispanic voters whether you're01:42:19
looking at numbers with young voters01:42:22
cutting in margins01:42:23
uh with black voters and again it's01:42:26
because president Trump is trusted on01:42:29
those top issues uh voters feel like he01:42:32
can restore the economy and really01:42:35
believe uh in his promise to make01:42:38
America great again to unleash American01:42:40
Energy to unleash the American worker01:42:42
and I think that that should be the main01:42:45
priority because it's what viewers want01:42:47
to see they want to know what they can01:42:50
expect out of their future we know that01:42:52
kamla Harris and Tim Walls have been01:42:54
dodging we know that President Trump and01:42:56
JD take those tough interviews uh do01:42:58
those rallies do those gaggles and so I01:43:01
think we're going to see more of that01:43:02
tonight but I certainly hope uh for all01:43:05
the viewers watching that CBS has a01:43:08
large responsibility to make sure to01:43:09
focus on those key issues one more01:43:12
question Danielle you know Senator Vance01:43:14
uh has also come under Fire as you know01:43:16
for spreading all those false rumors01:43:18
that Haitian migrants are eating01:43:19
household pets in his home state of Ohio01:43:22
Ohio's Republican govern Governor said01:43:23
it's not true and asked him to stop why01:43:26
did the senator amplify a false story01:43:28
about his own State without even01:43:30
checking out the facts first I mean he01:43:32
even reiterated uh in an interview01:43:34
saying sometimes he just makes stories01:43:36
up to grab people's attention so Senator01:43:39
Vance was very clear he had um received01:43:41
feedback from his constituents his01:43:43
priority obviously being the senator01:43:45
from Ohio he listened uh and he had01:43:48
heard the 911 calls really the Crux of01:43:50
the problem however is that this small01:43:53
town in Springfield Ohio which normally01:43:54
has a population of 60,000 had01:43:57
20,000 uh Haitian immigrants dropped on01:44:01
the town it has overwhelmed resources01:44:03
whether it's School whether it's Health01:44:05
Care um so it it really is an issue that01:44:08
we're seeing Across the Nation I heard01:44:11
anecdotally uh similarly it's happening01:44:13
in in towns and in communities in01:44:15
Virginia I know that it's happening01:44:17
across the country where because as DHS01:44:20
has reported 10 million illegal IM01:44:23
immigrants probably that number is01:44:24
larger uh probably millions and millions01:44:27
more have illegally crossed that01:44:29
southern border across the country01:44:32
communities are being overwhelmed01:44:34
whether with it's with illegal01:44:35
immigrants Rising migrant crime uh with01:44:38
fent andol pouring in I mean it's01:44:40
absolutely devastating it's something01:44:42
that our country cannot sustain and it's01:44:44
something that we know in polling uh01:44:47
that Americans support president Trump's01:44:49

multiple targets within Israel Israel01:48:14
making it very clear there will be01:48:16
consequences and it does have a plan01:48:18
it's a plan that we are waiting on this01:48:20
hour the White House saying that01:48:21
President Biden and vice president01:48:23
Harris have been monitoring the tack01:48:25
from The Situation Room the president01:48:26
has directed the US military to Aid01:48:29
Israel's defense against Iran's attacks01:48:31
and also uh apparently American forces01:48:35
have now intercepted some of those01:48:37
Iranian missiles the IDF says it appears01:48:40
that the Rockets have stopped flying for01:48:42
now and it is telling people that they01:48:44
can leave their protected spaces Israeli01:48:47
police also say that six people were01:48:49
killed in another incident a terror01:48:52
shooting they say it happened in Tel01:48:54
Aviv it was all happening at the same01:48:57
time we do have team coverage we want to01:48:58

bit um we saw uh cars back out on the01:49:07
road folks coming out from the shelters01:49:10

have been told they can leave their01:49:35
shelters but really a remarkable night01:49:37
this evening a frankly scary night over01:49:40
180 missiles fired from Iran at Israel01:49:44
uh people were told to take cover we01:49:46
here in Tel Aviv had to go to the01:49:47
shelter there are shelters on every01:49:49
floor we heard those loud booms those01:49:52
interceptions the Iron Dome intercepting01:49:54
those uh missiles we know that there01:49:55
were sites in central Israel that were01:49:58
targeted as well we understand that01:49:59
Israeli military sites were targeted and01:50:01
in Jerusalem our colleagues in Jerusalem01:50:03
were also reporting interceptions uh01:50:06
there so we know the US did participate01:50:08
in those interceptions as it did you01:50:10
know last time around when there was01:50:11
another big attack from Iran back in01:50:13
April over 99% of those um you know01:50:17
hundreds of missiles that had been fired01:50:19
at Israel were intercepted then we're01:50:21
still waiting to hear just how many have01:50:22
been intercepted this time around but01:50:25
like you say the big question is what01:50:26
happens next Israel has vowed to01:50:28
retaliate they say they do have a plan01:50:30
and will respond at the time and place01:50:32
of their choosing is is reporting all01:50:35

Israel is going to do we saw that first01:50:53
wave of missile attacks um that seemed01:50:57
to um I guess uh been through the Iron01:51:01
Dome um uh taken down uh without issue01:51:05
folks there in Israel back on the01:51:08
streets coming out of their shelters01:51:10
however Iran saying there is going to be01:51:12
a second wave and what exactly that01:51:15
could mean and then of course what01:51:17
exactly is Israel going to do so just01:51:20
your background and your understanding01:51:22
of how the Middle East works and attacks01:51:25
that we have of course watched over the01:51:28
years how do you see this playing out01:51:30
what do you think it has come to and01:51:33
what is Israel going to01:51:35
do absolutely it's the million-dollar01:51:38
question it really boils down to three01:51:40
things from my experience the first is01:51:42
what was targeted how it was uh how01:51:46
effective was were the strikes and then01:51:48
what weapons were used and this is01:51:50
really critical because if it was truly01:51:52
all ballistic missiles which only take01:51:54
12 minutes to get from Iran to Israel01:51:57
then that is a much different message01:51:59
than when they send drones which are01:52:00
slower than easier to intercept and the01:52:02
so what is this and you just hit it it's01:52:05
based on really history for the last 2001:52:07
years there's been proportionality01:52:10
between Israel and Iran when it comes to01:52:13
strike versus Counter Strike and they've01:52:15
always maintained this proportionality01:52:17
but the big change over the last say01:52:19
eight months to a year of course has01:52:21
been this propor personality escalation01:52:24
and the real question to me is this does01:52:27
Israel maintain its clear focus on01:52:30
putting their citizens back into01:52:32
Northern Israel and and doing operations01:52:34
in southern Lebanon to remove the threat01:52:36
or are they going to be forced to do01:52:38
those operations and deal directly with01:52:41
Iran so when we say wait and see this is01:52:44
really what we're looking for right01:52:46
now so apparently uh the IDF is taking01:52:50
responsibility now for killing the01:52:52
commander of the unit for the transfer01:52:55
of weapons from Iran and its Affiliates01:52:58
to Hezbollah and Lebanon this just came01:53:01
out uh moments ago in a statement uh01:53:05
your thoughts yeah absolutely they have an01:53:08
Exquisite intelligence apparatus because01:53:11
it's not just the weapons it's got to be01:53:13
your ability to Target and they're01:53:15
disrupting and destroying and degrading01:53:17
key commanders which really weakens the01:53:20
command and control of and its proxies01:53:24
and Iran has this growing list now that01:53:26
they say hey look we're going to do01:53:27
payback whether it's hinea whether it's01:53:30
uh Nala or this latest strike this list01:53:34
of degradated or killed commanders Iran01:53:38
has to do something but there's risk for01:53:40
Iran if all their missiles are shot down01:53:42
and they look completely incompetent in01:53:45
their response that is going to blow01:53:47
back on them because there's two01:53:49
audiences there's the International01:53:50
Community in Israel and there's the Iran01:53:52
Ian Street where they have to look01:53:54
strong because there is a homegrown01:53:55
threat there that they have to01:53:57
address I mean if you just look at all01:54:00
the leadership that's been taken out01:54:02
within the past year ever since Hamas01:54:04
attacked Israel back on October 7th I01:54:07
mean commanders within Hamas uh01:54:11
political leaders uh and then you see01:54:14
all the attacks I'm just looking at all01:54:16
the various dates Seth and then on01:54:19
September 17th that the pager and walky01:54:22
ho explosions that killed Hezbollah01:54:24
leaders there in Lebanon and then01:54:27
everything culminating to September 27th01:54:30
uh where Israel uh worked slow uh and01:54:34
and diligently with those uh bunker01:54:37
Buster bombs taking out hezbollah's uh01:54:39
main Commander Hassan nasrala I mean01:54:42
Iran is losing all its support all its01:54:45
proxies um I mean are they going at it01:54:49
alone now and and what do you think that01:54:52
means uh is it possible that in any way01:54:56
shape or form they will be forced to01:54:58
back down or does Israel go so hard uh01:55:02
it it takes out the01:55:03
regime no it's a great question this is01:55:06
really all about context so yes key01:55:09
leaders have been killed from Hezbollah01:55:11
but Hezbollah is a very large01:55:12
organization it's much more01:55:14
sophisticated than Hamas so there's some01:55:17
Intel analysts will tell you that01:55:18
there's over01:55:19
150,000 Fighters sitting in southern Le01:55:22
Lebanon that can be mobilized against01:55:24
any attack that comes in so it's01:55:26
critical to disrupt that command of01:55:28
control by killing all those commanders01:55:30
and making their response to any sort of01:55:33
Israel Israeli incursion to make it01:55:36
disjointed or just not synchronized and01:55:39
that will maximize the effectiveness of01:55:41
any operations that Israel takes but01:55:43
make no mistake Israel's goal here is to01:55:45
put their citizens back in Northern01:55:47
Israel it's not to go in and hold ground01:55:50
inside of Lebanon for a long period of01:55:52
time and one of the main reasons are01:55:54
that or is is that there's01:55:57
150,000 mobilized Israeli soldiers that01:56:00
have to cover all of these fronts Gaza01:56:02
Westbank Golden Heights Southern Lebanon01:56:06
and Northern Israel so there is a limit01:56:08
to what they're going to be able to mass01:56:09
and be able to execute you add these01:56:11
strikes in today there's a calculus01:56:14
that's going on in Tel Aviv right now01:56:16
for what are our priority targets and01:56:17
how are we going to address them so the01:56:19
next 24 to 48 hours will be fascinating01:56:23

down over over Tel Aviv and other parts01:56:53
of of Israel Iran for its part has said01:56:56
that this was in response uh to the01:56:58
assassination of ishia as well as the01:57:01
assassination of other top leaders01:57:03
including Hezbollah Hassan nashrah and01:57:07
essentially trying to make the case that01:57:09
uh that their response was justified and01:57:11
that this was not meant to be an01:57:13
escalation but a response that they said01:57:15
would be coming and one that Iran said01:57:18
uh came after a lot of self-restraint01:57:20
that was what what they used used uh01:57:22
words they used in the statement that01:57:24
they released tonight but as you've been01:57:26
talking about with all of our guests uh01:57:29

Beirut where we have watched for several01:57:41
days um Israel carry out uh its01:57:44
bombardment uh including targeted01:57:46
strikes even today several of them01:57:48
earlier this evening in the dya district01:57:51
of of Southern in Beirut where they have01:57:54
targeted other key members they say of01:57:56
Hezbollah but we've also seen them carry01:57:58
out strikes outside of that area and it01:58:00
all speaks to really the volatile nature01:58:03
of the situation and how this is still01:58:06
far from over and no one knows what's01:58:09
going to happen next and in the midst of01:58:10
that Kira you have uh tens of thousands01:58:13
of people who have been displaced from01:58:15
their homes uh many of them who have01:58:17
watched this this event unfold tonight01:58:20
unsure of what they will be doing with01:58:21
their lives in the hours and days ahead01:58:24
K yeah Israel has the upper hand and is01:58:27
in full control at this moment but all01:58:29
the innocent bystanders whether it's in01:58:31
Beirut or Tel Aviv or Jerusalem they01:58:34
don't have a choice in the matter um01:58:37
let's take it to our political01:58:38

for a ceasefire he has been wanting a01:58:46
peaceful end to all of this I think01:58:48

way that's right uh you know I think01:58:57
throughout this conflict particularly in01:58:59
the last several months as you saw01:59:01
President Biden articulate a sort of a01:59:03
very clear outline for a ceasefire the01:59:06
ceasefire plan you mentioned um you know01:59:07
I remember I was there at the White01:59:09
House this was announced at the end of01:59:10
May and uh many months went forward and01:59:13
we heard from White House officials that01:59:14
it looked like it was going to be near01:59:16
the end um you'd often hear that Hamas01:59:18
wasn't really on board with this01:59:19
ceasefire but also sources have told me01:59:22
that there were moments where Netanyahu01:59:23
also changed the parameters of what he01:59:25
wanted there and I think the really big01:59:27
challenge has been as one Middle East01:59:29
source told me you as the negotiating01:59:32
party cannot want this ceasefire more01:59:35
than the parties on the ground involved01:59:36
and that's where I think the struggle01:59:38
has been for Biden this white house has01:59:39
wanted an end to the conflict but it's01:59:41
not clear that the parties involved01:59:42
wanted it as much as01:59:45

firstly I can tell you that when the02:00:28

House officials say to coordinate the02:00:35
defensive response the US participated02:00:38
in trying to shoot down some of these02:00:41
missiles and succeeding in shooting down02:00:43
some of these missiles exactly how many02:00:45
the israelies were able to intercept02:00:47
versus the US and potentially other02:00:49
allies shooting down is very much clear02:00:52
but we know that that was what the02:00:53
president and the vice president were02:00:56
monitoring there the defensive ability02:00:58
by US military assets to shoot down some02:01:01
of these missiles in participation of02:01:03
course in defending their Israeli02:01:05
Partners we also know that senior White02:01:07
House officials telegraphed that there02:01:09
would be quote severe consequences for02:01:12
Iran if there was a direct strike of02:01:15
this nature at Israel exactly what02:01:18
severe consequences look like is still02:01:20
very much unclear as you said the White02:01:22
House is somewhat in a weit and SE02:01:24
pattern they are obviously in close02:01:26
touch with Israel because they were02:01:27
participating in shooting down some of02:01:30
these missiles but to your question of02:01:32
will the White House get a heads up as02:01:34
to any kind of retaliatory response02:01:36
Israel crafts here that is an open02:01:38
question no one really knows the answer02:01:40
to that I'll give you a good example02:01:42
when Israel took out the leader of02:01:44
Hezbollah in that strike on that02:01:46
building that they said was a Hezbollah02:01:48
headquarters us officials got an update02:01:51
about that strike while it was in motion02:01:53
they learned that it was happening while02:01:55
it was in progress so how much of a02:01:57
heads up they might get to an Israeli02:01:59
retaliation here is still very much02:02:01
unclear I can tell you we know that02:02:03
White House officials are going to get02:02:04
questions like that and others over the02:02:06

regarding Iran the Ayatollah and Iranian02:02:56

Roger Marshall for instance on the armed02:04:16
services committee uh said that quote02:04:18
Iran has is a danger to quote danger to02:04:22
freedom but no one goes as far as02:04:24
Lindsey Graham does to call for any kind02:04:26
of direct strike on Iran they say that02:04:29
Israel has the right to retaliate but02:04:31
they certainly don't go as far as02:04:33
Lindsey Graham does in saying that the02:04:34
US should Aid in any kind of direct02:04:37

speak directly with the Prime Minister02:16:32
but then he said there are quote ongoing02:16:34

what the US response and certainly what02:16:44
the Israeli response would be to all of02:16:46
this all of that to underscore your02:16:48

plans to do now in not just the coming02:16:55

will be quick so last time around in02:17:31

hundreds of missiles at Israel it took02:17:36
five or six days for Israel to respond02:17:39
in this case we're expecting it to be02:17:40
much shorter so potentially this evening02:17:42
potentially you know tomorrow uh we'll02:17:44
have to wait and see but we do expect02:17:45
the response to be a lot quicker what02:17:47
that response will look like we don't02:17:48
know and I think to Jay's point you know02:17:50
it'll be interesting to see what the US02:17:51
uh kind of pressures Israel to do and02:17:53
whether Israel listens we know in the02:17:55
last few days you know the US had been02:17:57
pushing for diplomacy uh you know prior02:17:59

when you talk to people here in Lebanon02:19:30
they have long said that the the US um02:19:35
us officials are the only ones that can02:19:38
uh stop Israel from its bombardment or02:19:41

conflict and this war and um that really02:19:47
is the sentiment but at the same time02:19:49
people will say uh you know the US is02:19:51
talking about the need for diplomacy but02:19:53
at the same time um supplying Israel02:19:56
with weapons and as we saw tonight uh02:19:58
helping to defend Israel from Iran's02:20:00
rocket barrage and so there there really02:20:03
is a large part of the population here02:20:06
uh that doesn't have a lot of faith in02:20:08
what the US officials say as it relates02:20:11
