Doch die Sehnsucht nach einem West-Auto ist bei vielen DDR-Bürgern groß. Nur: Wer kann sich das leisten? In dieser Folge von „Berlin wie es einmal war“ geht es in den alten Stadtbezirk Mitte. Unter den Linden, Alexanderplatz und Friedrichstraße sind die schicke Seite von Ostberlin. Mit Staatsoper, Palast der Republik, Fernsehturm und den vielen Vergnügungsorten an der Friedrichstraße schmückt sich die Stadt gern. Hier können Einheimische wie Touristen staunen, flanieren und sich amüsieren. Im Ballhaus an der Chausseestraße und in der „Kleinen Revue“ am Friedrichstadt-Palast gibt es sogar Erotik-Tanz. Ein paar Meter weiter, im Scheunenviertel, sieht der Alltag oft anders aus. Der Putz bröckelt in großen Stücken von der Fassade, viele Fenster schließen nicht. Auch das ist die Hauptstadt der DDR. Wie sah Berlin einmal aus? Wir zeigen einzigartige Aufnahmen aus dem alten Stadtbezirk Mitte – vom Arkonaplatz bis zur Voltairestraße. Hier warten die Männer der Feuerwache Berlin-Mitte auf ihren Einsatz. Viele Berlinerinnen und Berliner sowie Prominente erinnern sich an ihr Berlin-Mitte. Mit dabei sind die Schauspieler Rhea Harder, Denise Zich, Andreas Elsholz und Bernd Michael Lade, die ehemalige Ansagerin Monika Unferferth, Theologin Ellen Ueberschär, Solotänzer Rainer Genss, die Journalisten Regine Sylvester und Peter Pragal sowie rbb Moderator Raiko Thal, der in Ostberlin aufgewachsen ist.
