It's a scarf, it's a hood, and it's got
00:00:02
pockets. Let's stitch this beginner
00:00:05
friendly project together in just a few
00:00:06
hours.
00:00:11
Hey guys, I'm T, maker of 600 plus
00:00:14
crochet patterns and tutorials. Welcome
00:00:16
to the channel. Today's tutorial is
00:00:18
classic comfort with pockets. We're
00:00:20
making a hooded scarf that's warm,
00:00:22
wearable, and timeless. If you're new
00:00:24
here, welcome. I share crochet tutorials
00:00:26
and cozy patterns every Sunday and
00:00:28
Wednesday. So tell a friend, tap the
00:00:30
bell and subscribe so you never miss an
00:00:31
upload. And if you enjoy the video, give
00:00:33
it a big thumbs up if you like it or two
00:00:35
thumbs down if you don't. Either way, it
00:00:37
helps keep these tutorials free.
00:00:40
Any category 4 yarn will work. I used a
00:00:42
total of 330 g. That's 605 yard along
00:00:46
with a 5 1/2 mm hook for that soft
00:00:48
drapey finish. Pattern link below. Use
00:00:51
code TCDDIY for a discount on orders
00:00:53
over $9.99. and stay to the end for this
00:00:55
week's pattern giveaway. We're using
00:00:57
mainly the extended half double crochet
00:00:59
throughout the project along with two
00:01:01
others. They're all on screen now. Pause
00:01:02
to check it out. This tutorial is made
00:01:04
for a size small. You can adjust it for
00:01:06
your size and explain how to in the
00:01:08
video. So, without further ado, here's
00:01:10
how to crochet your very own plush
00:01:12
hooded scarf with pockets. Perfect for
00:01:14
coffee runs, chilly mornings, or gifting
00:01:16
to someone special.
00:01:18
Getting this cozy scarf started. We're
00:01:20
starting with the full length of the
00:01:21
scarf.
00:01:25
Start by grabbing our category 4 yarn.
00:01:28
Make a slip knot. Then grab our 5 and
00:01:32
1/2 mm hook. Now we're all going to do a
00:01:36
long rectangle that runs from fingertip
00:01:37
to fingertip wrapping around the neck
00:01:39
just like a cozy hug. We're going to
00:01:41
measure from our fingertip up the arm
00:01:43
around the back of our neck down the
00:01:45
other arm and down the opposite hand.
00:01:48
We're going to make an oddnumbered
00:01:50
foundation extended half double crochet
00:01:52
row that matches that measurement. That
00:01:54
measurement for me was just about 70 in
00:01:56
or 187 cm. So that's going to be about
00:01:59
231 stitches for me. Everyone is going
00:02:02
to start with a chain four.
00:02:08
We're all going to yarn over and into
00:02:10
that first chain that we made underneath
00:02:12
that front loop and back bump. bring our
00:02:15
hook down and insert our hook underneath
00:02:17
those two strands. We should all have
00:02:19
two strands plus two loops on our hook.
00:02:22
Yarn over and pull through just the two
00:02:24
strands. Then to form the first chain,
00:02:27
we're going to yarn over and pull
00:02:28
through just that first loop. That is
00:02:31
the first chain for our foundation
00:02:33
extended half double crochet row. Now
00:02:35
we're going to extended half double per
00:02:37
usual. So yarn over, pull through just
00:02:39
that first loop to give us three loops
00:02:41
on our hook. Then yarn over, pull
00:02:44
through all three. And that is one
00:02:47
extended half double crochet. To do the
00:02:49
next one, yarn over underneath that
00:02:52
first chain that we made underneath that
00:02:54
front loop and back loop at the same
00:02:56
time. Insert your hook underneath those
00:02:59
two strands. Again, yarn over and pull
00:03:01
through just those two strands to get
00:03:04
three loops on our hook. Yarn over, pull
00:03:06
through just the first loop to form the
00:03:08
chain. Then we're going to stitch per
00:03:10
usual. So, yarn over, pull through one,
00:03:13
yarn over, and pull through all three.
00:03:16
Now, this foundation extended half
00:03:18
double crochet row is doing two things.
00:03:20
It's building us a sturdy base,
00:03:22
therefore giving us a clean edge. And
00:03:24
we're starting our scarf off with this
00:03:26
foundation row just so that we don't
00:03:27
have to work into a bunch of chains
00:03:29
because I checked in the community post.
00:03:30
I feel like most of us don't like
00:03:32
working into really long chains. And if
00:03:34
you haven't actually checked out the
00:03:35
community post yet, head on over there
00:03:36
cuz we ask really fun questions and have
00:03:38
fun conversations over there. Now, keep
00:03:40
working these stitches until we have the
00:03:42
measurement that we need. Now, the
00:03:43
length of my scarf is actually already
00:03:45
done. So, I'm going to be doing a small
00:03:46
sample size with you. So, just to show
00:03:49
yall so far, this is what my scarf looks
00:03:51
like. Don't mind the stitch markers.
00:03:52
We'll get into that later. But, this is
00:03:54
the foundation row. We get a really
00:03:56
nice, clean, sturdy edge along the
00:03:58
bottom. We just want to make sure that
00:03:59
we're using a consistent tension
00:04:01
throughout this entire row because this
00:04:03
is a little bit longer, so it can get a
00:04:05
little heavy. Therefore, it can droop a
00:04:07
little bit. And when we have the
00:04:08
entirety of our foundation row
00:04:10
completed, just double check, make sure
00:04:11
that it is still the measurement that
00:04:13
you guys need. The rest of the rows for
00:04:15
the width of the scarf is going to be
00:04:17
back loop extended half double crochets.
00:04:20
So, same idea. Our turning chain is
00:04:22
going to be a chain three.
00:04:25
Turn our work and into that first stitch
00:04:27
from our previous row, insert into that
00:04:30
back loop. So, yarn over into the loop
00:04:32
that's furthest away from us. Insert,
00:04:34
pull through to get three loops on our
00:04:36
hook. Yarn over, pull through just that
00:04:38
first loop to still have three loops on
00:04:40
our hook. Yarn over, pull through three.
00:04:42
That is one back loop extended half
00:04:44
double. Now for the fun part. Keep
00:04:47
working back loop extended half doubles
00:04:48
to reach the end of the row. When we do,
00:04:51
chain three, flip our work, and repeat.
00:04:55
Now's the perfect time to get a drink
00:04:56
and watch your favorite show cuz this is
00:04:58
just rows of back loop extended half
00:05:00
doubles. absolutely no increases, no
00:05:03
decreases until we get the width of the
00:05:06
scarf that we want. Now, keep in mind
00:05:07
that this width is going to be the width
00:05:09
of our pocket as well, and I wanted mine
00:05:11
to be a little bit more narrow. But if
00:05:12
you want yours to be a little bit more
00:05:13
chunky, that's completely up to you as
00:05:15
well. Now, since the width of my scarf
00:05:17
is completed, I did a total of just nine
00:05:19
rows. This width just about 5 in or 13
00:05:22
cm. After that last row, I did cut. And
00:05:25
now on to another super easy part, the
00:05:28
hood.
00:05:32
Now, with the scarf base complete, we
00:05:34
are going to build the hood directly on
00:05:36
top. We're all going to find the center
00:05:38
of the back of the neck. So, just take
00:05:40
the amount of stitches that we made,
00:05:41
just cut that directly in half. Now,
00:05:43
since I made a total amount of 231
00:05:47
stitches for my foundation row, my
00:05:49
middle stitch is my 116th stitch. So, I
00:05:52
place my stitch marker into there. Then,
00:05:54
placing this at the center of the back
00:05:56
of our neck, we're going to try this on.
00:05:58
Then just place our stitch markers into
00:06:00
any stitches where we'd like for the
00:06:01
edge of the hood to be from my middle
00:06:03
stitch marker. It's into my 22nd stitch
00:06:06
away on both sides. And that's just
00:06:08
about 1 in underneath our collar bone.
00:06:11
Now we're going to do one row of
00:06:13
increases. Then just work more back loop
00:06:15
extended half double crochets for the
00:06:16
height of the hood. Working from stitch
00:06:18
marker across the back to our next
00:06:20
stitch marker. We're going to do two
00:06:22
back loop extended halves and increase.
00:06:25
Then repeat that all the way across for
00:06:27
a really deep, cozy, comfy hood. Placing
00:06:30
our hook into our stitch marker, we're
00:06:31
going to pull through and chain three.
00:06:33
Chain three is not a stitch. We just
00:06:35
need the height.
00:06:37
Into that same stitch that our chain
00:06:39
three is in, place our first back loop
00:06:41
extended half double crochet.
00:06:43
Then into that next, making sure we're
00:06:46
working towards the middle, another back
00:06:48
loop extended half double crochet.
00:06:51
Then we're going to increase into the
00:06:53
next. So into there with one back loop
00:06:56
extended half into that same stitch with
00:07:00
another back loop extended half. We're
00:07:04
going to continue with two back loop
00:07:06
extended halves, then an increase until
00:07:08
we make our way across to our next
00:07:10
stitch marker. And one quick thing, we
00:07:12
want to make sure that this base row
00:07:14
ends on an odd number. So count it out
00:07:16
and if it's even, just sneak in one more
00:07:18
stitch into that last stitch. First hood
00:07:21
row is all done. Now's the perfect time
00:07:23
to try and piece just to make sure that
00:07:25
the hood is sitting and fitting the way
00:07:26
that you'd like for it to be. Once when
00:07:28
it is, all we're going to do is just
00:07:29
more back loop extended half double
00:07:31
crochet rows all the way up to the top.
00:07:33
So no more increases. We're just going
00:07:34
to chain three, one back loop extended
00:07:36
half into every stitch. At the end of
00:07:38
the row, chain three, flip our work, and
00:07:40
repeat. So right now, we're basically
00:07:42
building another rectangle. And this is
00:07:44
going to show the height of the hood. So
00:07:46
keep working this until we reach the
00:07:47
crown of our head. We have now reached
00:07:49
the top of our head. Now for just a few
00:07:52
more rows with some decreases in the
00:07:54
middle to avoid that point. Just to let
00:07:56
y'all know, I have a total of 25 hood
00:07:59
rows. That height just about 14 in or 35
00:08:02
cm. Now the decrease rows. Pretty
00:08:04
simple. Start by finding the middle
00:08:06
stitch. We should all have just one
00:08:07
since we had an odd number of stitches.
00:08:09
My middle stitch in the 31st. Then we're
00:08:12
going to do our back loop extended half
00:08:14
double crochets until we have two
00:08:16
stitches left right before our middle
00:08:18
stitch. Then we decrease.
00:08:21
Two stitches left before our middle
00:08:22
stitch. Now we're going to work a
00:08:24
decrease. Five back loop extended half
00:08:26
double crochets. So yarn over. Next
00:08:29
stitch is back loop. Pull through. Yarn
00:08:32
over. Pull through just that first loop.
00:08:34
Next stitch is back loop. Pull through.
00:08:37
Yarn over. Pull through just that first
00:08:38
loop. Again, the next stitch is our
00:08:40
stitch marker stitch. Don't put this
00:08:42
away too far. We're going to insert into
00:08:44
that next stitch as back loop. Pull
00:08:46
through. Yarn over. Pull through one
00:08:48
loop.
00:08:50
Next stitch, pull through. Yarn over,
00:08:52
pull through one. Next stitch, pull
00:08:55
through. Yarn over, pull through one.
00:08:57
Now we should all have a total of 1 2 3
00:08:59
4 5 6 and seven loops on our hook. Now
00:09:03
yarn over and pull through all seven
00:09:05
loops all at once. And with this
00:09:08
decrease, we should have four less
00:09:10
stitches than our previous row. Go ahead
00:09:12
and insert your stitch marker into the
00:09:13
top of that decrease. And complete the
00:09:15
row with one back loop extended half
00:09:17
into the rest of our stitches. And now
00:09:19
we're just going to work the same
00:09:20
decrease row until we all have a total
00:09:22
of two of these rows. Now these two
00:09:24
decrease rows is going to soften up the
00:09:26
shape for the back of the hood so that
00:09:28
we don't have a point right at the
00:09:29
curve. Now we're going to seam our hood
00:09:32
together. We're going to fold our hood
00:09:34
in half and place our hook into the
00:09:35
corner stitches of the hood. And this
00:09:37
seam is super simple. We're just single
00:09:38
crocheting into both panels at the same
00:09:40
time. So into the first stitch into the
00:09:42
front, first stitch into the back, we're
00:09:44
going to single crochet everything
00:09:46
together. Now it should be closing up.
00:09:48
Keep working this until we've run out of
00:09:50
stitches. And this single crochet is
00:09:52
going to give us just enough structure
00:09:54
but enough flexibility so that the hood
00:09:55
is comfy when it's on. Once we have cut,
00:09:58
we're going to flip our work right side
00:10:00
out so that the seam is now along the
00:10:03
inside.
00:10:05
And we have just completed the hood. Now
00:10:07
let's get started on the pockets.
00:10:12
So when it comes to doing our pockets,
00:10:14
we're going to try this on. And we're
00:10:15
going to place a stitch marker into any
00:10:17
stitch for the height that we'd like for
00:10:18
the pocket to be because remember the
00:10:20
width of the pocket is going to be the
00:10:22
same width as our scarf. Now from the
00:10:24
bottom of our scarf, I would like for it
00:10:25
to cover my whole hand. So I just insert
00:10:27
my stitch marker into the 26 stitch from
00:10:30
the bottom. Then again, working with our
00:10:33
extended half double crochet foundation
00:10:35
row, I made a total of 26 stitches. Then
00:10:38
did back loop extended half double
00:10:39
crochet rows for the same amount of rows
00:10:41
that I have for the width of my scarf,
00:10:42
which was nine for me. When one pocket's
00:10:45
done, we're going to make a second one
00:10:47
that's exactly the same. Then we're
00:10:48
going to seam it up. Now, the seam is
00:10:51
going to be a single crochet seam. Two
00:10:53
really important things about this.
00:10:55
Number one, when we're seaming the
00:10:56
pocket panel to the scarf, we're going
00:10:58
to want to make sure that the pocket
00:11:00
slit is along the outside of the scarf,
00:11:02
cuz once we have it on, if it's on the
00:11:04
inside, we're going to have to redo it.
00:11:06
So, just make sure everything is aligned
00:11:07
and right side out. Then also this seam
00:11:10
is also going to single crochet along
00:11:12
the entirety just to clean everything up
00:11:13
as well. And placing our pocket panel on
00:11:16
top of the bottom of the scarf. We're
00:11:18
going to seam it together the same way
00:11:19
that we did the hood. So just single
00:11:21
crocheting in through both the front and
00:11:23
the back panel. And I'm going to work
00:11:24
towards the back of my scarf first. Once
00:11:26
we made our way all the way down to our
00:11:28
next stitch marker, we're then going to
00:11:29
combine the pocket with the scarf again,
00:11:31
just like how we started this piece off
00:11:33
with and work our way down. Then once we
00:11:36
reach the corner, working along the
00:11:37
bottom of the pocket and the scarf, all
00:11:39
we're going to do is put two single
00:11:40
crochets into every side row. Again,
00:11:42
still working in both panels at the same
00:11:44
time cuz we're still technically seaming
00:11:46
the pocket and the scarf together. And
00:11:48
we're just doing two single crochets
00:11:50
into every side row because the side
00:11:52
rows are just a little bit taller and we
00:11:53
don't want the edges to scrunch up on
00:11:55
us. Once we reach the other corner, just
00:11:57
continue with seaming the pocket and
00:11:58
just keep working our single crochets,
00:12:00
seaming where we need to all the way up
00:12:02
and over. Now, once we reach the edge of
00:12:04
the hood, that is going to be side rows.
00:12:06
So, again, just two single crochets into
00:12:07
each of those side rows. Our single
00:12:10
crochet row along the entirety of the
00:12:12
piece is completed. And now we are all
00:12:14
done. The last thing I have to do is
00:12:16
simply weave in all of our ends. And
00:12:18
there you have it, y'all. Your very own
00:12:20
hooded scarf with built-in pockets. I'm
00:12:23
so excited about this cuz I really love
00:12:25
all the cozy features between the hood,
00:12:27
the scarf, the pocket. Oh, perfection. I
00:12:30
can't wait to see your versions. And if
00:12:31
you do make your own, please, please,
00:12:33
please post it in the community tab. I
00:12:34
would love to see it. Now, I want to
00:12:36
hear from you guys. What kind of yarn
00:12:38
would you use for this? Would you use a
00:12:39
solid color? Would you use ombre,
00:12:41
