00:00:00
hey everyone how's it going thanks so
00:00:02
much for tuning in in today's video
00:00:04
we're gonna be taking an in-depth look
00:00:06
at one of my favorite cars from the
00:00:08
1990s the Chevrolet Impala SS
00:00:11
depending on how long you've been
00:00:13
subscribed to the channel I have filmed
00:00:15
one of these in the past but this is
00:00:17
actually my first time getting to drive
00:00:18
one so of course I couldn't pass up the
00:00:20
opportunity I'll be covering all of the
00:00:22
ins and outs taking that thorough Drive
00:00:24
getting plenty of sound clips and of
00:00:26
course showing you all of the unique
00:00:28
aspects there at the interior as well as
00:00:30
exterior and before we begin a special
00:00:33
thanks to Cosmo motors of Hickory North
00:00:35
Carolina for providing this opportunity
00:00:37
today for more information about the
00:00:39
dealership including contact info and
00:00:41
current inventory I put their link in
00:00:43
the description box below and so without
00:00:47
further ado let's go ahead and hop on in
00:00:50
start her up and let her run ever since
00:00:56
I was young this has been one of my
00:00:58
bucket list cars so pardon me if I fan
00:01:01
out a little bit but it's just so cool
00:01:03
full-size v8 rear wheel drive they only
00:01:07
made them for a few years in 1994 when
00:01:11
they first came out you can only get
00:01:13
black with the light grey leather
00:01:15
interior now the light gray carried on
00:01:17
through the rest of the production year
00:01:18
is but in 1995 which this one is they
00:01:22
opened up the color palette just a
00:01:23
little bit more to offer this beautiful
00:01:26
dark cherry finish as well as a dark
00:01:29
green
00:01:31
but the interior features embroidered
00:01:33
headrests perforated seat inserts across
00:01:36
the middle as well as a full length
00:01:39
center console these cars offered a
00:01:43
tremendous bang for your buck when they
00:01:45
first came out starting price was only
00:01:47
twenty-two thousand four hundred ninety
00:01:49
five dollars they were so popular in
00:01:52
fact that dealers had a hard time
00:01:53
keeping them in stock over the
00:01:55
production run I think there was around
00:01:57
sixty nine thousand seven hundred units
00:01:59
produced alright it's time to hop inside
00:02:14
[Music]
00:02:47
if you didn't already know the Impala SS
00:02:49
is basically a hot rod variant of the
00:02:52
Caprice there are some important
00:02:54
differences here and there of course
00:02:55
I'll cover those as we go through the
00:02:57
video but when you climb into the
00:02:59
interior the two cars are basically one
00:03:01
of the same the difference is with the
00:03:03
Impala SS include badging on the center
00:03:07
stack here you don't have any faux wood
00:03:10
trim like you can get in the Caprice you
00:03:12
have a full length center console which
00:03:14
is super nice and of course unique
00:03:16
leather upholstery with bucket seats if
00:03:20
memory serves me correct this steering
00:03:22
wheel was also shared with the Caprice
00:03:24
which isn't a bad thing it's wrapped in
00:03:27
leather there's grip bolsters at 3 and 9 and
00:03:30
because you have this 2 spoke design and
00:03:32
all of this open space it is super easy
00:03:35
to see that instrument cluster in 1996
00:03:39
there were a couple of really important
00:03:41
additions to the interior that set the
00:03:43
car apart from the Caprice even more and
00:03:46
it also makes that year a lot more
00:03:47
desirable as far as the collectability
00:03:50
is concerned for one they got rid of the
00:03:52
traditional column shifter in favor of a
00:03:55
floor shifter it was leather wrapped
00:03:57
like a t-handle design supercool and
00:04:00
they got rid of the partial digital
00:04:03
cluster that was shared with the Caprice
00:04:05
in favor of a fully analog setup that
00:04:08
actually had a tachometer in it so
00:04:10
that's awesome
00:04:12
before we check that the exterior and
00:04:13
cover more of the cars background let's
00:04:15
go ahead and pop the hood and talk about
00:04:18
the powertrain the concept for this car
00:04:20
was first shown at the 1992 SEMA Show
00:04:23
and one of the reasons why it was so
00:04:25
special and garnished so much attention
00:04:27
was that under the hood you had a 5.7
00:04:31
liter lt1 v8 borrowed from the Corvette
00:04:34
thankfully the same held true for the
00:04:37
production version in 1994 of GM
00:04:40
actually installed this engine not just
00:04:42
in the crease in the Impala SS but the
00:04:45
Buick Roadmaster and the Cadillac
00:04:47
Fleetwood even though this is an lt1
00:04:50
that's not exactly the Corvette engines
00:04:53
there are some important differences for
00:04:54
example this uses two boats main bearing
00:04:57
caps instead of four bolt cast iron
00:04:59
heads instead of aluminum as well as a
00:05:02
milder camshaft in this form it's
00:05:05
producing 260 horsepower and 330
00:05:07
pound-feet of torque those are really
00:05:10
respectable numbers for the time and
00:05:12
made it quite a quick car considering it
00:05:15
way is about 4,200 pounds the only car
00:05:19
that really came close to it I believe
00:05:22
was the Ford Taurus SHO which obviously
00:05:25
is a very different car than this this
00:05:27
car is bigger it's heavier it's
00:05:29
rear-wheel drive and basically the
00:05:32
Taurus SHO was opposite of all of that
00:05:35
but still 0 to 60 in about 7 seconds or
00:05:39
so not too bad these cars have really
00:05:42
started to climb up in value in recent
00:05:44
time so if you're looking for the
00:05:47
investment opportunity or collectability
00:05:50
obviously originality is very important
00:05:53
and this is an awesome example of a non
00:05:55
modified factory condition Impala SS but
00:05:58
I will say if you didn't care about that
00:06:00
quite so much and you just wanted to
00:06:02
have a lot of fun there is an abundance
00:06:04
of performance upgrades available for
00:06:06
these engines I think that's enough
00:06:08
chitchat for now though let's go ahead
00:06:10
and close the hood and we'll hit the
00:06:12
road for a minute and talk about how
00:06:13
this thing drives the LT one has great
00:06:18
power 260 horsepower and 330 pound-feet
00:06:22
of torque might not sound like a lot
00:06:24
nowadays but it was a pretty good amount
00:06:26
back in 1995 power comes on smooth it's
00:06:30
linear not much more you can ask for out
00:06:34
of a car like this it's also got a nice
00:06:37
tone with that dual exhaust back there
00:06:39
it's not very loud but it's got a nice
00:06:41
just classic American Muscle growl to it
00:06:44
if it were my car
00:06:45
I think I'd definitely have to put some
00:06:47
sort of aftermarket exhaust on it
00:06:49
because these things sound really really
00:06:52
good when they're uncorked a little bit
00:06:53
the lt1 is paired to a 4l60e 4-speed
00:06:58
electronically controlled automatic
00:07:00
transmission it's a transmission that GM has used for
00:07:04
many many years and all sorts of cars
00:07:06
trucks and suv's you know perfectly fine
00:07:09
transmission it does its job and I
00:07:11
actually think they still use it for
00:07:13
some of the Chevy performance connecting
00:07:16
cruise packages another thing that I've
00:07:19
always really liked about these old GM
00:07:21
b-body sedans is that you have the fuel
00:07:24
filler neck behind at the license plate
00:07:27
super old-school but also really
00:07:30
convenient when you think about it
00:07:31
because when you come to a gas station
00:07:32
it doesn't matter which side of the pump
00:07:35
you pull up next to because the filler
00:07:37
neck is right in the middle of the car
00:07:40
I hope you guys are enjoying the video
00:07:45
which is brought to you in part by LexA
00:07:47
leather cleaner and conditioner they've
00:07:49
been a huge supporter of the channel
00:07:51
over the last couple of years they've
00:07:53
also recently undergone a rebranding and
00:07:55
introduced a brand new look but the same
00:07:58
high-quality products they've been
00:07:59
developing for the last 85 years Lex
00:08:02
hauls two-step cleaning and conditioning
00:08:04
process is as simple as it gets the
00:08:06
cleaner is free of waxes oils and
00:08:09
unnecessary additives to help ensure
00:08:11
that it's not going to damage or
00:08:12
discolor your leather the whole point is
00:08:15
to lift dirt and oil from the leather to
00:08:17
give it and like new appearance after
00:08:19
you clean the thoroughly massaging it
00:08:21
into the leather however much you deem
00:08:23
necessary then you would follow up with
00:08:25
the conditioner Lexile recommends for
00:08:28
long-term care and maintenance that you
00:08:29
would do a full cleaning condition every
00:08:32
six months or so
00:08:33
Lex all quick care can also be had if
00:08:35
you wanted to do touch-ups about every
00:08:37
two months I've been using Lexile
00:08:39
products in my personal cars for many
00:08:41
years so it really is an honor to be
00:08:43
able to work with a brand that's had
00:08:45
such a long history and one that I can
00:08:47
truly stand behind so be sure to support
00:08:50
the brands who support the channel I
00:08:51
included a link in the description box
00:08:53
below if you'd like to pick up some Lex all
00:08:55
leather cleaner and conditioner for
00:08:56
yourself now let's get back to the video
00:08:59
now let's go ahead and check out the
00:09:01
exterior first look ahead flip on the
00:09:03
lights and the hazards
00:09:10
I'll talk about the power accessories in
00:09:12
just a bit but as far as the power
00:09:14
windows the driver's window has an
00:09:16
automatic down function with the rise in
00:09:22
popularity of SUVs at the time the
00:09:24
writing was kind of on the wall for GM's
00:09:26
full-sized b-body sedans the Caprice
00:09:29
wasn't selling all that great and the
00:09:32
mass-market in general just wasn't all
00:09:34
that interested in full-size sedans
00:09:36
anymore it really is a wonder that this
00:09:39
car made it to production in the first
00:09:41
place because if you think about it
00:09:43
taking everything into consideration it
00:09:46
was a pretty niche market vehicle but I
00:09:48
think it ended up doing a lot better
00:09:50
than they were initially expecting like
00:09:52
I said earlier it was first unveiled at
00:09:55
the 1992 SEMA Show and there was so much
00:09:58
hype around it that an inner production
00:10:00
for 1994 I mentioned that a little
00:10:03
comparison with the Taurus SHO earlier
00:10:05
to try to put performance into
00:10:07
perspective but really the Impala SS
00:10:09
didn't have much in the name of
00:10:11
competition it was more old-school in
00:10:14
nature than most things coming out of
00:10:15
the time which is something that I like
00:10:17
to be honest its closest competitor
00:10:20
wouldn't come out until 2003 the Mercury
00:10:23
Marauder I know it's kind of hard to
00:10:26
compare two different cars that were
00:10:27
made at two different times but the
00:10:29
Marauder was to mercury as the Impala SS
00:10:32
was to Chevrolet big full-size v8 rear
00:10:36
wheel drive console shifter and a
00:10:39
monochrome paint scheme
00:10:41
so I touched on those interior changes
00:10:43
that were applied for the 1996 model
00:10:45
year but for 1995 there was actually
00:10:48
some exterior changes from 1994 the
00:10:51
first one is that the mirrors were
00:10:54
relocated from the doors to the base of
00:10:56
the a-pillars towards the rear the
00:10:59
c-pillar was also reshaped so in 1994
00:11:02
you had this plastic piece that came
00:11:04
down from the glass and formed like a
00:11:07
triangle right here because the Caprice
00:11:09
actually had a full piece of triangle
00:11:11
glass right here so it was just to give
00:11:14
a different look and reshape the window
00:11:16
so to speak but in 95 they just changed
00:11:19
the stamping of the metal to incorporate
00:11:21
this so you don't have any more plastic
00:11:23
piece you just have the emblem here and
00:11:25
a nice smooth piece of chrome there's no
00:11:30
denying that the body color Impala SS
00:11:32
logos are a nice finishing touch coming
00:11:36
around the rear you had the same
00:11:38
taillights as you would find on a
00:11:40
Caprice the backup lamps are right in
00:11:43
the middle and on the Impala SS you have
00:11:46
a full decklid spoiler that goes around
00:11:49
the entire lid
00:11:51
at the time this thing was created the
00:11:54
Impala nameplate had been around for
00:11:55
quite a while but this was the first
00:11:58
time the Impala SS nameplate had been
00:12:00
used since 1969 it was also the first
00:12:04
time the Impala SS nameplate had been
00:12:06
applied to a four-door which really
00:12:08
didn't seem to matter all that much I
00:12:10
mean how can you complain with something
00:12:13
that looks this good the exclusive
00:12:17
17-inch five-spoke wheels have a bright
00:12:20
silver finish to him I believe they're
00:12:22
actually machine and has a nice Center
00:12:25
cap in the middle to hide the lug nuts
00:12:26
for a cleaner appearance the original
00:12:29
tires for BF Goodrich cop TAS that
00:12:32
measured 255 50 Zr 17 this car is riding
00:12:38
on Nitto tires at the moment it's a
00:12:40
pretty beefy size for something like
00:12:41
this
00:12:44
four-wheel disc brakes came standard
00:12:46
along with a four-channel ABS system I
00:12:49
believe the front discs spend 12 inches
00:12:52
I can't remember the dimensions of the
00:12:53
rear discs but they provide a lot of
00:12:55
stopping power the Impala SS benefited
00:12:59
from Chevrolet's 9c1 police package that
00:13:02
was offered on the Caprice so for the
00:13:05
most part the suspension design is the
00:13:07
same as a Caprice it's just tuned up a
00:13:10
little bit for better handling I think
00:13:12
most of the changes were actually in the
00:13:14
rear but if you've never driven one of
00:13:16
these cars before this will feel like an
00:13:19
absolute boat again 4,200 pounds it's a
00:13:23
big heavy car I think that's what I find
00:13:27
most interesting about this car it's a
00:13:29
unique blend between comfort and
00:13:31
performance it doesn't necessarily do
00:13:34
one thing really well it just kind of
00:13:37
covers all the bases seat get a little
00:13:39
bit of everything I mean I love big
00:13:43
full-size cars I always have and to be
00:13:46
able to have a good authoritative Pole
00:13:50
whenever you hit the accelerator and to
00:13:52
be able to see all this open space and
00:13:54
have the ride that it has it's just nice
00:13:57
I guess the best way I can describe this
00:14:00
car as road manners is that it feels
00:14:02
very solid and stable you can tell
00:14:06
there's a lot of weight but when going
00:14:09
around a corner it's just so smooth
00:14:12
and relaxed you don't have quite as much
00:14:15
body roll as you think you would not bad
00:14:21
now let's take a look at some of the
00:14:24
interior features
00:14:29
from the passenger side you can get a
00:14:31
better perspective of just how reaching
00:14:34
this dash is it's so long I think
00:14:38
compared to my Grand Marquis it's
00:14:39
probably double the length just kind of
00:14:41
funny but the entire thing is padded
00:14:44
meaning it's important to take care of
00:14:46
it you need to either cover this or keep
00:14:48
it conditioned because prolonged sun
00:14:50
exposure as these cars age can crack the
00:14:54
dashboard so just something to be aware
00:14:55
of everything and the center stack is
00:14:58
easily accessible of course we got that
00:15:01
consult coming across the middle and the
00:15:04
glove box it's actually locking it's a
00:15:07
pretty decent amount of space this one
00:15:10
still has its original information tape
00:15:12
which is amazing and of course just like
00:15:17
the other side you've got plenty of leg
00:15:18
space the biggest downsides to the
00:15:22
interior really just boiled down to the
00:15:25
quality of materials but you can say
00:15:27
that about a lot of 90s GM products if
00:15:30
I'm to be perfectly honest the plastics
00:15:33
do get brittle over time so things have
00:15:35
a greater propensity to crack storage
00:15:38
and care is the most important thing
00:15:40
that you can do for these cars to make
00:15:42
sure that you limit UV exposure get some
00:15:45
high-quality window tint if it's got to
00:15:47
be kept outside more often just to make
00:15:49
sure that you're keeping those harmful
00:15:51
rays off of the older plastics as much
00:15:54
as you can just to preserve everything
00:15:57
in its original condition the upper door
00:16:01
panels are padded
00:16:03
there's a grab handle off to the side
00:16:05
you power mirror controls power seat
00:16:08
controls and power window controls are
00:16:10
also located on the door
00:16:12
there's also large door storage pockets
00:16:16
your power adjustments include sliding
00:16:19
tilting and height adjustment but fork
00:16:21
line is manual coming across the dash on
00:16:28
the left side you have your headlamp
00:16:30
controls like you saw earlier hello air
00:16:32
vent a storage pocket it's just all very
00:16:36
simple the center stack is super basic
00:16:40
just like the Caprice single zone
00:16:42
climate control with three rotary knobs
00:16:44
up top and rear defrost Delco cassette
00:16:47
tape player right beneath it am/fm radio
00:16:50
and a pullout storage tray the rear of
00:16:54
the console also has a pretty good
00:16:55
amount of space and up top dual visors
00:17:00
both of them have vanity mirrors but
00:17:02
they don't have any illumination the
00:17:04
rear view mirror is auto dimming and
00:17:06
underneath you have reading lamps
00:17:08
alrighty let's go ahead and shut her
00:17:10
down for now
00:17:15
I'll be honest filming this video has
00:17:17
been kind of a bittersweet experience
00:17:19
for me on one hand I love these cars
00:17:22
they offer fantastic performance for
00:17:24
what they are they're also super
00:17:26
comfortable and very practical all
00:17:29
things considered the problem is that
00:17:32
you just can't buy stuff like this
00:17:33
anymore I guess the closest thing to it
00:17:36
was the Chevrolet SS and even that's
00:17:39
gotten the ax but check out this back
00:17:41
seat
00:17:42
it is so roomy you can fit five
00:17:47
full-sized adults in this car no problem
00:17:50
the unique leather upholstery carries on
00:17:53
back here as well you have the Impala
00:17:55
logo stitched in between the seats and
00:17:57
two fixed headrests again the middle of
00:17:59
the seats are perforated now let's go
00:18:04
ahead and hop in it's a nice wide
00:18:07
opening for easy ingress and egress it's
00:18:12
also a ton of room as you would expect
00:18:13
I'm five foot ten the seat in front is
00:18:17
set to a comfortable position for myself
00:18:19
and I still have maybe three inches or
00:18:22
so wiggle room it's also a seat back
00:18:25
storage pocket Headroom is actually a
00:18:28
little less than I thought
00:18:29
again I'm 510 I probably have about an
00:18:32
inch inch and a half of wiggle space the
00:18:35
thing I liked the most about the
00:18:37
backseat is actually where you're
00:18:38
positioned I had the camera at my line
00:18:40
of sight as you can tell the headrest is
00:18:43
super low it doesn't feel all that low
00:18:46
when you're sitting in the front but in
00:18:47
the back you have excellent visibility
00:18:50
across the dash across the sides it
00:18:54
really makes the cabin feel open when
00:18:57
you're sitting in the middle of the
00:18:58
backseat things feel a little bit
00:19:00
tighter as far as leg space but head
00:19:03
space doesn't seem to change all that
00:19:04
much there is a pretty big drivetrain
00:19:06
hump that you have to straddle it's not
00:19:08
too big of a deal but it might affect
00:19:10
leg space and an overall space depending
00:19:13
on the size of the people sitting back
00:19:14
here all in all the back seat is just so
00:19:18
comfortable if you didn't have somebody
00:19:20
sitting in the middle you can also fold
00:19:22
down this big padded armrest
00:19:25
circling back to the practicality
00:19:27
comment from a second ago this thing has
00:19:30
a huge trunk total cargo volume is
00:19:33
twenty point four cubic feet which is
00:19:36
better than most sedans nowadays and
00:19:39
even better than some crossovers out
00:19:41
there you can cram a lot of stuff into
00:19:44
this car the trunk opening is really
00:19:47
wide and the lift over height is low so
00:19:49
if you're trying to pick up something
00:19:50
heavy and put it in the trunk that low
00:19:53
height makes it just a tad easier the
00:19:56
spare tire is anchored down in the
00:19:58
middle or the carpeted cover there's a
00:20:01
cargo net in the middle with some
00:20:02
tie-downs
00:20:03
and some illumination
00:20:11
now let's go ahead and see if she sounds
00:22:36
well guys that's going to conclude
00:22:38
