However, Ukrainian forces attacked at the right time and conducted a bold maneuver that not only pushed the enemy back but also threatened their flank. Ukraine's goal in this sector is to neutralize the Russians in Ivanivka before they can entrench themselves and flank Novopavlivka. Clearing the enemy presence and liberating Ivanivka would not only eliminate the threat from this side of the river, but once secured, these positions could be used to apply flank pressure and isolate other Russian units. The Ukrainian plan called for the element of surprise, deploying tanks to soften resistance inside Ivanivka and pinning down the enemy. In the preparatory phase, drones would assist the infantry in the assault on the village and the elimination of the remaining Russians, bringing it back under Ukrainian control. The main Ukrainian advantage is the position of Ivanivka, as it is separated from the main Russian force mass along the Vovcha. The positions are also too weak and too close to the front to allow safe transportation of armored vehicles, preventing the Russians from bringing in significant reinforcements. The Russian assault groups were overextended and without enough support to compensate. The Ukrainian forces launched their operation at the perfect time, before the Russian troops could dig in, attacking during the thick fog to deploy the otherwise rarely used tanks. Geolocations show a Leopard 1A5 conducting a preliminary bombardment from a concealed position, targeting enemy concentrations. The operation resulted in the death of two Russian soldiers and the wounding of the rest, complemented by the intervention of operators and their fiber-optic drones, who hunted down the remaining ones. Fifty-three Russian soldiers were killed in the operation, while the 19 survivors, realizing that retreat was impossible and that the bulk of the Russian forces were unable to organize relief, chose to surrender. Overall, Russian forces had advanced on Ivanivka with the goal of establishing a bridgehead across the river, but they ended up in a veritable killing zone on the plain. Ukrainian marines exploited the bad weather, even using tanks to destroy the enemy contingent, which had been left without a retreat. If the Russian high command attempts another assault in this sector, it will face an even greater obstacle, as it will be forced to recross the river under a strengthened Ukrainian defense and on full alert. At the same time, after capturing Ivanivka, the Ukrainians will be able to launch flank attacks and maintain the Russian salient to the east under constant pressure.
