00:00:00
All right. Well, I'm getting all packed
00:00:02
up here and getting ready to leave. I've
00:00:04
been out here for a couple of nights. My
00:00:07
first winter trip in my cargo trailer
00:00:10
conversion.
00:00:12
I thought I'd do a little bit of a walk
00:00:13
through. Now, I'm going to stay say
00:00:16
three things before we get started. One,
00:00:19
I did this on quite a bit of a budget.
00:00:22
Two, I am not a carpenter.
00:00:25
Not even close. And three, I fully
00:00:28
expect this to take me a few years to
00:00:31
get it really ironed out and dialed in
00:00:33
how I want it. So, for right now, a lot
00:00:36
of the stuff in here is just um kind of
00:00:39
make it work and use it for a while to
00:00:42
decide exactly how we want to organize
00:00:44
the space and build it out. And so we
00:00:47
purchased this in the summer and I knew
00:00:49
I didn't have a there was a lot of stuff
00:00:51
that had to happen to this to make it
00:00:53
watertight and to fix some of the
00:00:55
problems that these utility trailers
00:00:57
have with. There's a long list. We won't
00:00:59
get into that in this video. I just want
00:01:00
to do a walk through, but there's a lot
00:01:02
of things that had to get done before
00:01:04
wintertime. Um, I don't have a garage,
00:01:06
so I'm working in the in the driveway,
00:01:09
and I didn't want to get too far into a
00:01:11
big buildout and not be able to seal the
00:01:13
wood, paint, and do stuff like that,
00:01:15
where right now it's just too cold to do
00:01:17
that. So, it is at a usable state, but
00:01:19
it's a little rough. So, let's go do
00:01:21
let's let's walk around the outside real
00:01:23
quick, and then we'll head inside. So,
00:01:26
first things first, this is a Victory
00:01:28
Trailers. Um, it's the 12-footer.
00:01:34
I don't remember the height. I think
00:01:35
it's about 7 feet high and it's at the
00:01:39
single axle. It weighs 1300 lb as you
00:01:43
purchase it. And that's what I wanted. I
00:01:45
wanted lightweight. So, and I wanted it
00:01:48
very mobile with the single axle. It's
00:01:50
just more mobile when you get out in the
00:01:53
boons and you're trying to get in and
00:01:56
out of campsites or traverse
00:01:59
sections that are that are nasty. You've
00:02:00
got to be very careful with your weight
00:02:02
distribution. and if you have a blowout
00:02:04
could could be potentially a big
00:02:06
problem. Anyways, all that aside, get
00:02:08
into that stuff in another video. So,
00:02:11
for right now,
00:02:14
uh basically with the front, didn't do a
00:02:16
whole lot. Doubled up the the screws and
00:02:18
the sheets. So, just to help hold it
00:02:21
together better.
00:02:24
Walk over to the side here. This came
00:02:27
with a side door, but it did not come
00:02:29
with that RV latch. It's a cam lock.
00:02:31
Now, I actually like this setup very
00:02:33
well. The RV latch is good for in and
00:02:36
out and while you're camping, but you
00:02:37
can shut the cam lock and secure it a
00:02:40
little bit better if you uh while you're
00:02:42
traveling and if you leave it while
00:02:44
you're out doing stuff. I installed some
00:02:47
brackets and an ARB awning.
00:02:51
Got some 4500 lb
00:02:54
uh
00:02:56
stabilizing jacks. I went with these
00:02:58
heavy duty ones so that I can pick the
00:03:00
trailer up one or the other in case I
00:03:03
need to get real crazy with leveling it,
00:03:05
but also the nice benefit is I can pick
00:03:08
it up and change a tire or for a theft
00:03:11
deterrent, you can pick it up and
00:03:13
actually pull your tires off. So, that's
00:03:15
pretty nice. I did a whole lot of work
00:03:18
to this thing. We'll get into that in
00:03:20
another video, but basically I pulled
00:03:21
all the sheets off. I sealed the seams
00:03:25
and I doubled up the amount of fasteners
00:03:28
and put a row of fasteners here and cut
00:03:32
the sheet and raised it up so that the
00:03:34
frame the fasteners did not go into the
00:03:36
frame.
00:03:39
Not much to talk about in the rear.
00:03:41
Doubled up the fasteners. Sealed
00:03:42
everything up really good. Now, this is
00:03:45
padlock and zip tied shut because I
00:03:47
don't use it right now.
00:03:50
And on this side, just not much. Doubled
00:03:53
up the fasteners and a window. So, the
00:03:56
windows,
00:03:59
I bought this window specifically
00:04:01
because it fits between the wall studs
00:04:06
there. And I did not want huge windows
00:04:09
to get busted out by branches. And it
00:04:11
lets less heat in in the summer and less
00:04:14
heat out in the winter. So, these are
00:04:17
emergency exit windows. So if something
00:04:20
ever did happen, I've got one on each
00:04:22
side. They work out pretty good so far.
00:04:24
And then I've just got one of these real
00:04:26
small ones. This is actually set in
00:04:28
between the framing of the door.
00:04:34
And that's about it. There's a lot more
00:04:36
we'll get into in another video, but
00:04:38
right now, let's do a walkthrough of the
00:04:39
interior.
00:04:43
All right, so here it is. Pretty basic.
00:04:46
The setup here is just a simple
00:04:49
workbench style buildout. Again, I'm not
00:04:52
a carpenter and a lot of this is just
00:04:55
not the best materials, lightweight, but
00:04:59
it's temporary until we decide how we
00:05:02
want to do the whole front setup. I
00:05:05
didn't want to spend a bunch of money
00:05:06
and put a bunch of weight in here
00:05:08
knowing that we're probably going to
00:05:10
change how it is. So, simple layout
00:05:12
here. and then just purchased some of
00:05:15
these lightweight plastic organizers and
00:05:18
they work out pretty good. They're
00:05:20
fairly affordable
00:05:22
and they're lightweight so they're
00:05:25
modular. We can move them around as we
00:05:26
want. We can use them later.
00:05:29
So the walls and the ceiling are
00:05:33
insulated.
00:05:34
The ceiling is covered with quarterinch
00:05:38
plywood, 1-in thick foam board with some
00:05:42
spray foam insulation on the corners and
00:05:45
some of the gaps. The front wall is the
00:05:47
same way. It's about an inch and a half
00:05:49
thick uh spray foam. Now, the walls are
00:05:52
the original plywood that came with the
00:05:54
trailer. It's not bad stuff. They just
00:05:57
uh yeah, it's it's okay. The the ceiling
00:06:00
stuff I had to buy. I went with quarter
00:06:02
inch because it's flexible. This is an
00:06:03
arched
00:06:05
ceiling on here. It's flexible and
00:06:08
lightweight. With this thing being 1300
00:06:10
lb dry, I didn't want to uh just throw a
00:06:14
whole bunch of heavy heavy weight on
00:06:16
here.
00:06:19
So, this is basically the front. You got
00:06:21
the kitchen area here and then storage
00:06:24
and all that stuff. Uh just got a little
00:06:28
power bank here, a little blue eddi.
00:06:30
Now, again, another one of those
00:06:32
temporary things. This this is basically
00:06:34
for charging small devices and running
00:06:37
these lightweight lights here. They go
00:06:40
all the around the edge. Just some
00:06:42
lightweight
00:06:45
low power draw lighting and then the
00:06:48
rest is just uh rechargeable lanterns
00:06:50
and it works out pretty good.
00:06:53
So, you've got some room here where the
00:06:55
cooler is. We we'll have to do something
00:06:57
else in the summer when it's when we
00:06:59
need a bigger cooler, but this is
00:07:01
working out pretty well. There's room
00:07:02
here for another cabinet or maybe a a
00:07:05
heater or a stove, wood stove or
00:07:07
something like that. Um, we've got this
00:07:11
little dinette.
00:07:13
Again, pretty simple. It's just boxed
00:07:15
in. There's storage underneath here. And
00:07:19
then the table folds down or lays down.
00:07:22
And this folds into a queen-siz bed.
00:07:25
That's 5-in thick upholstery foam.
00:07:28
Pretty decent. Pretty decent.
00:07:30
Um, the only thing I didn't insulate as
00:07:32
far as the walls go are the rear doors.
00:07:36
Uh, we'll get to that. We'll get there.
00:07:38
So far, I don't feel it that much, so
00:07:41
that's not too big of a deal. The floor
00:07:43
is also not insulated. It is 3/4 in
00:07:47
plywood. And then I've got this foam on
00:07:50
top of it. these fatigue mats.
00:07:55
It could be better, but honestly, for
00:07:57
right now, it's it works pretty good.
00:08:00
You can see these windows here. The nice
00:08:02
thing about these, they do have screens,
00:08:04
but I don't have them in because it's
00:08:05
winter time. It just lets a little more
00:08:07
light in. But you can push these out,
00:08:11
climb out if you need to, or jump out.
00:08:13
Um, the nice thing is you can have these
00:08:15
open when it's raining and still get a
00:08:18
lot of ventilation. So, that's pretty
00:08:19
nice. At some point,
00:08:23
shelving and all that stuff's going to
00:08:24
go in with a vent hood for cooking and
00:08:26
all that, but for right now, just pop
00:08:28
the window open. I've got a little fan,
00:08:30
a little USB powered fan that works good
00:08:33
for extra extracting fumes and and
00:08:36
moisture.
00:08:38
Yeah, that's about it. Pretty simple.
00:08:41
Pretty simple.
00:08:43
So, I've got a diesel heater there, and
00:08:46
I just put it outside underneath a
00:08:48
little picnic table, and then I've got
00:08:52
an adapter that goes in this window. It
00:08:55
slides up. The adapter goes in here, and
00:08:57
my heater port comes in here. Is that
00:08:59
perfect? No. But it does work. It gets
00:09:02
it pretty comfortable in here in about
00:09:03
45 minutes. And,
00:09:06
uh, it's it works pretty good. Uh, the
00:09:10
nice thing about diesel heat is that it
00:09:12
is very dry heat. So, you can actually
00:09:14
dry some clothes out, crack one or two
00:09:17
of these windows open to let some of the
00:09:18
moisture out, but you can dry clothes
00:09:20
out and that sort of thing. Uh, a lot of
00:09:23
people like the little little buddy
00:09:24
heaters. Those put out so much moisture.
00:09:28
If you use that to heat this up, you can
00:09:30
really feel it. It feels damp and it
00:09:32
doesn't do a good job drying clothes
00:09:34
out. So, the diesel heat is working
00:09:37
really good so far. I like it. That's
00:09:40
about it. If you have any questions, let
00:09:41
me know. I wanted this to be a quick
00:09:42
walk through, just kind of show what
00:09:44
I've been working on. Some people were
00:09:45
asking what I've been up to, and this is
00:09:48
it. So, I really had to slam hard on
00:09:52
this to get it to this usable state
00:09:54
before winter hit. Like I said, I I work
00:09:56
in my driveway. I don't have a garage,
00:09:59
and I wanted to get to this point before
00:10:02
building anymore and covering up. At at
00:10:05
some point, I'm going to take all this
00:10:07
back down and seal all of the wood in
00:10:10
here. And that just because you're going
00:10:13
to have a lot of moisture in here no
00:10:14
matter how you do it. And I definitely
00:10:16
want to seal all that off before I start
00:10:18
building even more. Um, just as uh
00:10:23
preventative to keep mold and and and
00:10:25
rot down to a minimum. So anyways, it's
00:10:30
about it.
00:10:33
Basically, all this stuff gets stowed
00:10:34
away when we travel.
00:10:37
Water goes down there. Dishes go in one
00:10:39
of these totes.
00:10:41
All right, speaking of traveling, I got
00:10:43
to get out of here. I still got to hitch
00:10:46
up, secure all this stuff, get out of
00:10:49
here, and then take the chains off the
00:10:51
truck. Yeah, winter camping is uh it's a
00:10:54
lot of work. It's rewarding, but it's a
00:10:56
lot of work. All right, see you in the
00:10:57
next one. Thanks for watching. then
00:10:58
leave a comment down below and I'll try
00:11:00
and get back to as many of those as
00:11:02
possible. I will probably put another
00:11:04
video out going into the hows and wise a
00:11:08
little bit deeper for those that are
00:11:09
interested if there's enough interest.
00:11:11
All right, anyways, bye for now.

Description:

Quick walk through and overview of my DIY cargo trailer to camper conversion. This is a simple build, lightweight and basic materials but still 4 season usable. The goal for this project is to be a self sufficient and off grid small camper capable of getting as far away from campgrounds as possible.
