00:00:04
we attempt to fix the old Clan comatic
00:00:06
and now we need to crack open this
00:00:08
coffin and mutsy demonstrates how V10
00:00:10
s85 rod bearing spin
00:00:16
[Music]
00:00:17
hello and welcome back to part three of
00:00:19
project X5 we're on the mission to
00:00:21
resolve the blue smoke issue that this
00:00:23
big giant has
00:00:26
in the previous episode we took apart
00:00:28
the top end of the engine and replaced
00:00:30
all 32 valve stem seals that were bad
00:00:33
and not sealing properly now we're
00:00:35
picking up the action after reinstalling
00:00:36
the camshafts and timing the engine
00:00:38
spark plug time
00:00:44
foreign
00:00:46
dirty looking aluminum you know what
00:00:48
that means right that's right time to
00:00:50
fire up my Vixen surface treatments
00:00:52
aquablast 1215 Vapor blasting cabinet
00:00:55
it's been far too long since I used it
00:00:57
last time so I'm really looking forward
00:00:59
to this and you go
00:01:09
I love this thing
00:01:20

brand new gasket
00:02:22
our beautiful timing cover
00:02:32
here we're going to replace the oil
00:02:33
pressure switch
00:02:35
they can fail in fact that's what failed
00:02:37
on Alpena and the engine lost oil
00:02:40
pressure and it skipped timing so
00:02:42
preventive maintenance here
00:02:49
brand new one that comes with a washer
00:02:54
thank you
00:02:57
don't worry we'll clean all of that once
00:02:59
I reinstall the timing cover
00:03:07
Vanos solenoids we're going to replace
00:03:08
the O-rings and clean them
00:03:14
I've never seen them this bad
00:03:17
that is crazy throttle cleaner
00:03:29
compressed there
00:03:33
we can also use 12 volts to activate
00:03:35
them see how they're clicking
00:03:40
now copious amounts of fogging oil for
00:03:42
men
00:03:48
brand new O-rings
00:04:00
and these two are ready you can repeat
00:04:02
the same with the other two oil up the
00:04:05
lip
00:04:12
now slowly turn the bolts to evenly sit
00:04:14
them in
00:04:21
so look from the other side to see that
00:04:24
the O-ring is seated in the head and I
00:04:27
can see here that it's not so I need to
00:04:29
pull it out a little bit and then do
00:04:31
this again
00:04:35
and now I can no longer see the O-ring
00:04:38
and the solenoid is fully seeded
00:04:41
this one needs a little bit of help
00:04:45
now it's in brand new vacuum pump you
00:04:47
can see that the old one was leaking
00:04:49
heavily and made a mess in the engine
00:04:51
bay we need to slot this in into
00:04:52
ravana's gear
00:04:57
you can actually use a screwdriver here
00:05:00
to do that
00:05:02
there it is
00:05:07
brand new valve cover gasket and I took
00:05:09
the opportunity and cleaned up this
00:05:11
cover
00:05:12
so now we're going to replace
00:05:14
CCV diaphragm here
00:05:19
am I
00:05:21
that is ugly okay I'm gonna go spray
00:05:23
this out with brake cleaner
00:05:26
a ton of junk came out of here
00:05:28
and that's as clean as it's going to get
00:05:31
spring
00:05:33
and bring you diaphragm
00:05:40
bring your gasket for the valvetronic
00:05:42
motor plate
00:05:44
small rubber grommets here grommets here
00:05:52
a bit of oil here for the spark plug
00:05:53
cubes and of course to help us keep
00:05:56
the gasket in place
00:05:58
zip ties
00:06:01
this one is ready to go in brand new and
00:06:03
lubed up spark plug cubes
00:06:08
final round of cleaning
00:06:10
now you can add the ceiling where the
00:06:11
timing cover meets the head
00:06:15
and also on the half moons in the back
00:06:20
so let's do it the same way we took it
00:06:22
out under an angle
00:06:24
okay
00:06:30
okay
00:06:32
smooth where are we catching uh it's the
00:06:35
fuel line
00:06:36
now you can cut the zip ties
00:06:39
push it home
00:06:42
longer knots on the intake side
00:06:44
doesn't hurt to go around with a mirror
00:06:46
and just make sure
00:06:47
the gasket is seated properly all around
00:06:49
the torque is 10 unit meters even though
00:06:52
it's a bit unnecessary because you'll
00:06:53
feel when the bolt bottoms out just
00:06:56
don't go past that
00:06:58
and you're not gonna snap any studs or
00:07:00
bolts
00:07:03
get ready to fight how did I get this
00:07:06
out again
00:07:08
and freaking believable what a stupid
00:07:11
design
00:07:14
cutting the gasket in half
00:07:26
never seen such idiots in my life this
00:07:29
is absolutely surreal man the lead
00:07:32
engineer must have been Mickey Mouse he
00:07:34
doesn't want to slip over The Eccentric
00:07:36
shaft sensor
00:07:38
so I have to use my finger
00:07:42
in order not to cut
00:07:44
the gasket
00:07:46
finally over it
00:07:48
been doing this for 20 minutes now
00:07:51
absolutely ridiculous
00:07:55
not only did they put the stupid
00:07:56
eccentric shaft sensor in this stupid
00:07:58
position they had to make it sharp so
00:08:01
when you touch the valve cover gasket
00:08:04
you're gonna slouch right through it I
00:08:06
really thought working on the X5 is
00:08:07
going to be a bit easier than on e65
00:08:09
because it's a bigger car nope
00:08:15
every time it drops and it ends up
00:08:18
somewhere in the subframe where I can't
00:08:19
get to it
00:08:20
and it doesn't hit the ground ah just
00:08:23
forget it get a different one
00:08:28
okay
00:08:29
I'm running out of 10 mils didn't hit
00:08:32
the ground I think I have another one
00:08:33
let's lose that one too
00:08:38
brand new ignition corals or ebosh
00:08:40
eccentric shaft sensor gaskets and brand
00:08:42
new OE camshaft position sensors
00:08:48
foreign
00:08:53
your gasket volatronic motor
00:08:58
simply screw it in
00:09:04
beautiful now I'm going to copy paste on
00:09:06
the other side
00:09:10
now we're going to replace the
00:09:11
alternator bracket seal which is
00:09:13
technically not the alternator bracket
00:09:14
seal on this car it's a bit different
00:09:16
than an e65 for example on that car you
00:09:19
have to support the engine from the top
00:09:21
on both the engine mount support arm and
00:09:24
then you can remove and unbolt the
00:09:26
alternator bracket X5 doesn't have that
00:09:29
it only has these two lines that go into
00:09:31
the oil thermostat and then in between
00:09:33
that old thermostat and the block
00:09:34
there's that seal that looks exactly the
00:09:37
same as the alternator bracket on the
00:09:38
e65 so technically this should be a bit
00:09:41
easier because we don't have to mess
00:09:42
with the engine mounts but the problem
00:09:44
is I can't even see it where it is it's
00:09:46
somewhere over here so we need to unbol
00:09:48
these two lines and unbolt the
00:09:50
thermostat and replace it there you can
00:09:52
see the two lines thermostat and then it
00:09:54
bolts to the block
00:09:59
cool that's the bolt for the oil cooler
00:10:02
lines
00:10:05
that's the two lines disconnected we
00:10:07
need to replace those O-rings after and
00:10:09
you need a tool like this to get to the
00:10:10
bolt and now there should be three
00:10:13
e-torx bolts holding the thermostat in
00:10:16
that's
00:10:18
really tight
00:10:20
ah finally ah
00:10:23
another bolt where's the last one
00:10:27
all right I stripped the bottom bolt
00:10:30
can't get it out so I have to order some
00:10:32
tools from Amazon to extract that bolt
00:10:34
so we'll pick that up tomorrow in the
00:10:36
meantime we're gonna continue and do
00:10:37
something else now we're gonna reinstall
00:10:39
the old this car I swear it is there's
00:10:42
no room for anything
00:10:49
ideally you need five Engineers here one
00:10:52
to swear one to Direct One to snort
00:10:54
cocaine
00:10:56
oh goody
00:10:57
the oil pan
00:11:01
give me a minute gonna make this thing
00:11:03
look brand new
00:11:20
gotta remove the old pickup tube to
00:11:22
clean it
00:11:28
yeah that's coming up as well see how
00:11:31
much crowd we have in there all of this
00:11:32
looks like paper or cotton or something
00:11:34
I think it was from the old filter that
00:11:36
was disintegrating
00:11:39
nice and clean
00:11:47
learnings and gents the easiest oil pan
00:11:50
gasket to replace
00:11:51
in the world I'm gonna apply thread
00:11:54
sealer on the bolts sealer not Locker
00:11:58
totally drop them in
00:12:11
contact cleaner
00:12:15
brand new dream plug the old one was
00:12:18
semi-stripped the torque for this is 350
00:12:21
newton meters
00:12:24
that's looking spiffy isn't it gonna
00:12:27
remove the water pump at thermostat
00:12:28
since we're replacing that
00:12:35
we need to remove the vibration dumper
00:12:37
in order to get to one of the water pump
00:12:39
bolts that's behind it and unlock the
00:12:41
vibration jumper
00:12:49
foreign
00:12:54
[Music]
00:13:00
body as well so we can clean it and
00:13:02
there's one coolant line
00:13:04
behind it that I want to replace
00:13:14
who wants to see Mitzi getting a treat
00:13:21
good huh
00:13:23
catch
00:13:25
yes it's not
00:13:28
she can't do that
00:13:32
take it
00:13:34
oh no must
00:13:36
enough
00:13:37
now she's all happy see if she can speak
00:13:39
like a rod bearing spin like a red
00:13:40
bearing
00:13:43
that's how you spin around bearing right
00:13:47
foreign
00:14:00
do you even know where you are I love
00:14:02
this dog and it's not even mine cooling
00:14:04
system parts we are going to replace
00:14:05
every single coolant hose all of these
00:14:08
plastic connections they get very brutal
00:14:10
over the years especially on a car
00:14:12
that's been in a hot climate all of its
00:14:14
life so I don't want to risk it with any
00:14:15
of that got new sensors as well new
00:14:18
original coolant tank water pump and 90
00:14:21
degrees Celsius thermostat from Yorks a
00:14:24
must for n62 engine I love this thing
00:14:26
another common issue on this engine is
00:14:28
the coolant pipe that runs across the
00:14:30
middle of the engine in the valley you
00:14:32
saw me replacing that on opina which is
00:14:34
super easy when you have the engine out
00:14:36
of the car and it's completely
00:14:37
disassembled but to replace it on this
00:14:39
car I would have to remove the intake
00:14:41
manifold the front timing cover
00:14:43
everything in front of it and then pull
00:14:44
it out I could also get collapsible
00:14:47
aftermarket pipes I don't know if they
00:14:49
work well another solution is to get
00:14:51
some sleeve and then smear some stuff on
00:14:54
the inside of the pipe which is going to
00:14:55
seal it but that's not really a good
00:14:57
solution because you're only sealing the
00:14:59
pipe on the inside and not the outside
00:15:01
on this particular car it's not leaking
00:15:03
whatsoever so I'm not going to touch it
00:15:05
because even if it does start leaking
00:15:06
it's not something that's going to leave
00:15:08
me stranded it's just going to develop a
00:15:10
coolant leak and we're going to see
00:15:12
coolant on the floor and it's going to
00:15:13
slowly lose coolant and then we know we
00:15:15
need to do it but at this point I'm not
00:15:17
going to worry about it because another
00:15:18
thing that's crossing my mind see all of
00:15:21
this build up here this slime calcium
00:15:24
whatever it is that's probably what
00:15:25
sealing that pipe right now and the seal
00:15:27
is pretty good kind of replace this
00:15:29
small coolant pipe
00:15:32
all right
00:15:37
now I need to clean this here
00:15:47
new pipe silicone spray
00:15:53
gonna clean the throttle body
00:16:04
around your gasket
00:16:08
foreign
00:16:11
the connector before we forget
00:16:28
the bolt is finally loose
00:16:31
but there's still a bit but there's a
00:16:33
bit more material left on the
00:16:35
on the head and that won't it won't let
00:16:37
me to pull
00:16:38
I don't know what I'm talking anymore
00:16:39
because I've been doing this for a whole
00:16:41
day
00:16:43
Bolt
00:16:52
oh
00:16:54
oh
00:16:56
well yeah that makes sense
00:16:58
thermostat broke
00:17:01
it's out
00:17:03
this Mighty Euros is what happens when a
00:17:05
small bolt turns into a massive ordeal
00:17:07
took me a better part of my day to
00:17:09
remove this thing I made a mistake of
00:17:12
not removing the power steering pump
00:17:13
which you should definitely do if you're
00:17:15
replacing this gasket two bolts in the
00:17:17
front and you can just pull it out and
00:17:18
have a lot more room to access all of
00:17:20
the bolts I didn't position the ratchet
00:17:22
properly on this bottom bolt so when I
00:17:24
tried to turn it I shipped the head and
00:17:26
this is E10 Torx and the problem is the
00:17:29
transfer case is right over here so you
00:17:30
don't have a lot of space to use any
00:17:32
tools I tried different bolt nut
00:17:35
extractors nothing worked and I was this
00:17:37
close to dropping the subframe and the
00:17:39
transfer case to get this thing out but
00:17:41
then I decided to use the Dremel and
00:17:43
grind the head off
00:17:45
and then I use the pry bar and broke the
00:17:47
thermostat housing which doesn't matter
00:17:48
in your thermostat is 40 Euro and then
00:17:50
this thing popped loose and I was just
00:17:52
able to undo it by hand
00:17:54
ridiculous but this is the famous gasket
00:17:57
that's plastic at this point they always
00:17:59
leak and this costs two euros
00:18:02
this is a 15 minute job at Max when you
00:18:05
undo all of the boats properly but in my
00:18:07
case it took a bit longer so I ordered a
00:18:10
new one that's going to come in a couple
00:18:12
of days in the meantime we're going to
00:18:13
continue and do other stuff now I'm
00:18:15
going to do a spot of cleaning that's
00:18:17
marginally better the sway bar bushings
00:18:19
are perished so we're gonna do that now
00:18:21
since we have clear shot at the brackets
00:18:24
foreign
00:18:32
is a bit cunning here and for the
00:18:34
reasons unknown to humanity they do not
00:18:36
sell these bushings separately you can
00:18:38
only buy them together with the brand
00:18:39
new sway bar makes no sense whatsoever
00:18:42
because why would you want to replace
00:18:43
the entire sway bar it's a piece of
00:18:45
metal and if it's in good condition you
00:18:47
don't need to replace it the only thing
00:18:49
that's bad are these bushings anyway
00:18:51
since I don't want to spend 500 euro on
00:18:52
a piece of metal I went with powerflex
00:18:54
polyurethane bushings that's the only
00:18:57
other alternative
00:19:00
assembly grease to just silicone grease
00:19:07
ah fits like a glove
00:19:13
I'm gonna install the water pump
00:19:20
huh
00:19:22
thermostat
00:19:31
I'm going to replace this coolant line
00:19:33
here
00:19:34
I wonder if I can flush the coolant
00:19:37
there
00:19:38
yes
00:19:41
that worked wonderfully
00:19:43
flush the cooler
00:19:48
vibration dumper
00:19:54
you know the fun part this is a stupid
00:19:58
elastic belt
00:19:59
[Music]
00:20:01
to grow through the engines so the belt
00:20:03
can settle
00:20:05
now the belt is fully seated now you're
00:20:08
going to replace this heater core
00:20:09
coolant lines
00:20:14
come on up your hands out
00:20:17
that worked
00:20:28
that's all of these lines here replaced
00:20:30
brand new coolant temperature sensor
00:20:38
brand new OE thermostat 45 European
00:20:41
Shillings and a replacement bolt keep
00:20:44
the surface a nice wipe
00:20:47
thank you
00:20:48
good and twist
00:20:52
done
00:20:54
three minute job to put it back in now
00:20:55
we need to replace the O-rings
00:20:59
oil
00:21:02
I'm Bolt
00:21:05
and that's that stupid small seal
00:21:07
officially replaced
00:21:10
there's a connector that plugs into the
00:21:13
power steering pump so if you're doing
00:21:15
this job definitely unbolt the power
00:21:16
steering pump very easy two bolts in the
00:21:20
front and one connector in the back
00:21:27
foreign
00:21:33
[Music]
00:21:40
coil wires
00:21:45
now I'm gonna go around with liquid
00:21:46
Molly engine compartment cleaner and see
00:21:48
if we can make this thing look a bit
00:21:50
nicer
00:22:09
I don't know what kind of magic potion
00:22:11
is in that spray bottle but look at the
00:22:12
engine bay it looks about 20 times
00:22:14
better than before and I didn't even
00:22:16
spend that much time or put too much
00:22:17
effort into this just sprayed it all
00:22:19
around use the brush to rub it in and
00:22:21
then compress there to blow it out
00:22:22
really happy how it turned out
00:22:25
how to buy a brand new one for this side
00:22:27
because it was broken
00:22:29
100 euros ridiculous plug in the fuel in
00:22:33
clip
00:22:39
water pump pulley
00:22:42
brand new pulley
00:22:46
brand new tensioner with a pulley
00:22:48
this is the one that was squeaking
00:22:51
before
00:22:54
around your belt
00:22:57
no compress it and pull out the pin
00:23:01
brand new expansion tank
00:23:06
there's one coolant line on the bottom
00:23:10
there it is
00:23:12
now I'm going to go and flush the
00:23:13
radiator
00:23:20
the fan
00:23:24
plug it in coolant hose going in
00:23:29
connect the sensor
00:23:34
that's the cooling system reconnected
00:23:36
brand new CCV
00:23:38
brand new intake air duct the old one
00:23:40
was perished
00:23:43
cabin air filter and everything in the
00:23:45
back the wipers we're going to do that
00:23:47
later at this point I want to hear the
00:23:49
engine running
00:23:55
I'm going to replace the mouth
00:23:59
OE Bosch
00:24:13
foreign
00:24:18
clips that were missing
00:24:22
time for the fresh fluids since we saw
00:24:24
that the engine is a little bit sludgy
00:24:26
we're gonna go with liquid Molly 0w-40
00:24:28
since I have a lot of it in stock then
00:24:30
we're gonna run engine flush and dump
00:24:32
that oil and then we're going to switch
00:24:34
permanently to 5w40 full synthetic this
00:24:37
is the correct coolant for this engine
00:24:38
which is the bluish kind and then fresh
00:24:41
power steering fluid AKA hydraulic fluid
00:24:43
which is the green stuff I thoroughly
00:24:45
cleaned the cap
00:24:49
a little bit of the orange
00:24:53
and now we need to pre-loop the oil
00:24:54
filter
00:25:09
before we start adding coolant
00:25:11
ignition on
00:25:15
set the temperature to Max
00:25:18
thank you
00:25:19
and then fan low setting and now we can
00:25:21
start adding coolant because the heater
00:25:23
core valves are open
00:25:27
so this vehicle doesn't have power
00:25:30
steering drain bolt on the power
00:25:32
steering pump or power steering line
00:25:34
that I can easily disconnect and then
00:25:35
drain the fluid so you're going to do it
00:25:37
the basic way you draw the fluid from
00:25:39
the reservoir put new stuff in start the
00:25:42
car and then repeat that process four
00:25:44
five six times until the fluid starts
00:25:46
looking nice and green because right now
00:25:48
it's not green or nice
00:25:53
that should be green
00:25:58
that's how that should look like
00:26:01
nice and green now we need to reset
00:26:03
valtronic adaptations so I fired up ISTA
00:26:06
takes about 13 days for the thing to
00:26:09
load all right continue
00:26:12
that was it successfully learned I
00:26:14
unplugged the crank position sensor
00:26:16
which means the engine will not start
00:26:18
which is exactly what we want we want to
00:26:20
crank the engine over without firing to
00:26:22
build oil pressure and then we're going
00:26:23
to plug it back in clear the codes and
00:26:25
start it
00:26:28
foreign
00:26:48
level
00:26:52
sounds good
00:26:54
idle goes down
00:26:57
sounds nice and smooth so now I'm going
00:27:00
to let it warm up fully and then we're
00:27:02
going to put engine flush then run it
00:27:04
for 10 minutes and then drain that oil
00:27:12
turn it off
00:27:13
it's funny you pretty much have to
00:27:15
disconnect this air duct every time you
00:27:18
want to put oil in the engine
00:27:21
cup
00:27:24
so once you run the engine flush
00:27:26
well first of all try not to spill
00:27:29
second of all once you run the engine
00:27:30
flush you want to change the oil twice
00:27:32
not just once because
00:27:34
this stuff is really thin and it'll stay
00:27:37
in the oil so if you do only one oil
00:27:38
change you can have some residue left in
00:27:40
the oil
00:27:41
so what I like to do is change oil right
00:27:44
after this then run it for a little bit
00:27:46
and then do another oil change and then
00:27:47
you can go back to the regular oil
00:27:49
change interval
00:27:54
10 minutes
00:28:02
foreign
00:28:04
protection when removing hot oil
00:28:09
and that doesn't look too bad
00:28:14
all right I'm going to let this drain
00:28:16
overnight
00:28:17
I'm gonna go home have dinner and then
00:28:19
we'll pick this up tomorrow
00:28:26
starting to look a bit better but still
00:28:28
on the brownish side
00:28:35
cold start sounds brilliant
00:28:39
[Applause]
00:28:40
I'm going to take all of this off and
00:28:42
then we're going to reinstall the wiper
00:28:44
mechanism and the windshield cowl
00:28:47
here's a brand new cover the old one was
00:28:49
broken
00:28:56
then we have these reinforcement bars
00:29:02
the rest of the covers
00:29:06
the windshield call is actually in good
00:29:08
condition just faded so we're gonna
00:29:10
quickly paint it I already degreased it
00:29:12
so now we're going to apply plastic
00:29:13
primer
00:29:29
foreign
00:29:36
s
00:29:39
brand new caps
00:29:42
one of them was missing
00:29:45
brand new cabin air filters
00:29:50
foreign
00:29:54
spanking new covers
00:30:00
no longer need to stick
00:30:06
I'm going to do the wiper blades
00:30:15
let's see if the windshield washer pump
00:30:17
works
00:30:21
yes
00:30:24
rear wiper blade
00:30:30
and we gotta fix this so this thing is
00:30:33
held in by double side sticky tape
00:30:39
and cut through that stuff
00:30:44
my mic battery died here so enjoy the
00:30:46
silent film
00:30:57
just realized my microphone died but
00:30:59
that's beautifully sorted here's the
00:31:01
type of Maintenance that no one ever
00:31:03
does but should be done
00:31:05
replacing the fuel filler cap after 15
00:31:07
years of service
00:31:09
we're going to clean around it
00:31:14
just a little bit
00:31:24
so this Rubber seal here that can go bad
00:31:26
over the years in fact the seal on this
00:31:28
one has cracks and it can actually set
00:31:30
off a check engine light
00:31:33
he shoots
00:31:36
and doesn't score here's a brand new one
00:31:39
original part now this might be
00:31:40
difficult to replace but don't be afraid
00:31:44
it's doable
00:31:49
yeah
00:31:51
cold start
00:31:55
nice quite a big cardis
00:32:01
off we go
00:32:13
now we're gonna let it warm up and then
00:32:15
we're gonna do the test to see if it's
00:32:17
still puffing blue smoke the engine
00:32:18
sounds wonderful a lot smoother than
00:32:21
before
00:32:24
[Applause]
00:32:27
foreign
00:32:31
that's one good sounding V8 it's been
00:32:34
idling now for about 14 years so let's
00:32:36
push the throttle and see what happens
00:32:39
look at that
00:32:43
just a bit of condensation which is
00:32:45
absolutely normal because the car hasn't
00:32:47
been driven in forever but no blue smoke
00:32:50
at all
00:32:51
blue smoke issue and oil consumption
00:32:54
resolved
00:32:57
foreign
00:33:04
sounds Mighty doesn't it
00:33:07
someone asked me why didn't you get the
00:33:09
six cylinder version
00:33:10
really did you hear that plus the six
00:33:13
cylinder it's nice but it's gonna
00:33:15
consume the same amount of fuel because
00:33:17
it has less power and it's a heavy car
00:33:19
this is powerful
00:33:21
and it sounds good and now onto the
00:33:23
transmission which has a small but
00:33:25
Annoying issue let me demonstrate the
00:33:27
issue with the transmission I'm gonna
00:33:29
engage drive now which works just fine
00:33:32
and it's instant but if I try to engage
00:33:35
reverse watch or listen how long it
00:33:37
takes now one two three three second
00:33:42
delay to get the reverse going
00:33:45
shouldn't be like that should be pretty
00:33:46
much instantaneous and this is
00:33:48
especially annoying if you're trying to
00:33:50
park the car if I'm maneuvering the car
00:33:51
here in the yard you're just sitting
00:33:53
here and waiting for the transmission to
00:33:54
kick in
00:33:56
as far as I know otherwise it's shifting
00:33:58
fine it's not clunky it's not sleeping
00:34:00
gears only this
00:34:02
now one two three second delay to get to
00:34:06
reverse engaged
00:34:08
is the issue so let's see if we can fix
00:34:10
it this X5 has a zf6hb 28x transmission
00:34:15
BMW and parts catalog like real OEM call
00:34:18
it 6 hp 26z which is a bit confusing so
00:34:22
it's always best to look for the name
00:34:24
stamp on the side of a transmission
00:34:25
before ordering parts we are going to do
00:34:28
a thorough service of this sloshbox and
00:34:30
replace some parts of the valve body
00:34:31
that can cause funky problems such as
00:34:34
this one we have the crack spec fluid
00:34:36
for this transmission from liquid Mali
00:34:37
top Tech ATF 1800 new pan with inbuilt
00:34:41
Filter valve body separator plate new
00:34:44
sleeves dampers adapters and mechatronic
00:34:47
solenoid kit what this is going to solve
00:34:50
our issue I'm not sure but this is a
00:34:52
good starting point and we're trying
00:34:53
before deeming this transmission bad
00:34:55
gonna remove the protection plate
00:34:59
that's the oil pan with inbuilt Filter
00:35:01
that's currently leaking first we're
00:35:04
gonna crack open the fill plug
00:35:06
and I'm going to get questions again why
00:35:08
it's rather simple if you take off the
00:35:12
drain plug and you drain all of the oil
00:35:15
out and then you come back to fill the
00:35:16
thing and you can't remove this fill
00:35:18
plug for whatever reason where you're
00:35:20
going to do then
00:35:21
at least this way if you know it's not
00:35:23
going to come out you can buy tools or
00:35:24
prepare yourself for the challenge
00:35:28
Give It Up
00:35:30
ah
00:35:32
a good slap
00:35:34
hello that looks really disgusting
00:35:40
so I'm gonna go ahead and say
00:35:42
this transmission was never serviced
00:35:49
yeah definitely never serviced
00:35:54
P40
00:36:00
it's all been removed but we have one
00:36:02
bolt in the front and one in the back so
00:36:04
we can break the seal
00:36:08
foreign
00:36:11
ly remove this bolt and lean the pan
00:36:14
this way so if there's more fluid in it
00:36:16
it can drain
00:36:24
oh God it stinks
00:36:28
so here's the oil pan these are the
00:36:30
magnets and you can see where that
00:36:32
occurred over the years collects metal
00:36:34
shavings and here you can see the date
00:36:37
it says
00:36:38
September 11 2008 so this transmission
00:36:42
was never serviced and this is of course
00:36:45
normal wear that happens
00:36:47
over time now I'm going to disconnect
00:36:48
the plug
00:36:53
okay that's the plug disconnected now we
00:36:55
need to pull this white tab
00:36:58
and this is going to release
00:37:00
this thing here that we also need to
00:37:02
replace there are O-rings in there
00:37:10
there it is now I'm going to remove the
00:37:12
mechatronics and there are two different
00:37:14
size bolts here we're removing t40 and
00:37:18
t27 we are not touching at this point
00:37:31
okay
00:37:34
to the table
00:37:37
look at me
00:37:40
ah so these are the sleeves that we need
00:37:43
to replace this is the thing here that
00:37:45
we need to replace as well
00:37:48
gonna start by replacing these leaves
00:37:50
here we have two that are same size and
00:37:52
then one that's middle size and one
00:37:54
that's the longest so we're gonna take
00:37:56
them out one by one compare them with
00:37:57
the new ones and replace them see if we
00:37:59
can use this
00:38:05
oh yeah it's much easier this is the
00:38:07
longest one and I lubed up new one with
00:38:09
transmission fluid
00:38:14
and that's how it should fit
00:38:17
I should stick out all of it the old one
00:38:19
was compressed a lot
00:38:22
this is the middle one
00:38:27
and these two are the same size
00:38:32
well that was easy wasn't it now we need
00:38:35
to take apart the valve body replace the
00:38:37
plate the solenoids and the rest of the
00:38:39
stuff that comes with the kit
00:38:43
first we're going to remove this cable
00:38:44
here so this is t27
00:38:50
now we need to separate the electronics
00:38:51
from the hydraulic unit which is this
00:38:53
big plastic on the back and the sheet is
00:38:55
going to tell us which bolts to remove
00:39:01
it's already ready to come out
00:39:09
near here came out with the pins now
00:39:11
we're going to remove the raster bolts
00:39:13
and then we can separate the valve body
00:39:16
foreign
00:39:20
open this coffin gently pry here
00:39:27
okay
00:39:38
lovely that's the guts of the valve body
00:39:41
so don't flip this one around there are
00:39:44
Springs they're check balls and stuff in
00:39:47
here
00:39:48
so we're just gonna try to gently clean
00:39:51
the surface
00:39:52
a little bit before we put the new plate
00:39:55
in
00:39:56
make sure that this number here matches
00:39:58
with the plate that you got
00:40:00
this one says a605 on one side and b065
00:40:06
on the other I have clean carbon fiber
00:40:08
here
00:40:12
I'm not going to take this thing apart
00:40:14
because I don't think it's necessary and
00:40:16
I also don't want to misplace any of
00:40:18
this stuff this here is a filter let's
00:40:20
pull that out and clean it
00:40:25
yeah it's a mesh filter and it's clean
00:40:28
it doesn't look dirty at all
00:40:35
I'm not going to replace these dampers
00:40:36
here seven of them and to get them out I
00:40:39
can use a pick tool from the other side
00:40:42
and slowly push them out
00:40:45
like that
00:40:49
and it's pretty flat Q-tips to clean
00:40:52
this kind of coat it with oil
00:41:15
all of the old ones are flat except for
00:41:17
one for whatever reason now I'm gonna
00:41:19
Park this one on the side
00:41:22
now we're going to change the solenoids
00:41:24
we have three yellow ones these are
00:41:25
actually blue even though they look
00:41:27
somewhat green they spent 18 years
00:41:29
inside of a transmission so they change
00:41:31
colors and these are actually orange not
00:41:33
brown and then we have the last one
00:41:34
which is green need to remove the
00:41:36
retaining plate
00:41:43
okay we're gonna replace them one by one
00:41:49
so these are already pre-looped but we
00:41:51
can give them a little bit more
00:41:57
and the last one
00:42:05
alien looking one
00:42:07
and then we need to remove this because
00:42:09
that also comes with the kit yep pop
00:42:12
this loose push it out
00:42:15
then we can take out this thing
00:42:20
let's oil it up
00:42:44
these are torqued to six millimeters
00:42:52
foreign
00:42:53
[Music]
00:43:01
gently
00:43:08
also six
00:43:11
and that's all of the solenoids replaced
00:43:16
new plate
00:43:20
the gingerly put this back on
00:43:32
now I'm going to flip it around
00:43:36
and we can install
00:43:38
this thing
00:43:39
and we need to be careful to line up
00:43:41
this pin with the notch here
00:43:48
and there we are fully seeded I'm going
00:43:52
to get the new cable
00:43:56
now I'm going to torque all of these
00:43:57
bolts to six unit meters and there's no
00:44:00
specific torque sequence so I'm just
00:44:01
going to start from inside to out
00:44:09
and this fall body is ready
00:44:12
to go back in
00:44:16
new bridge connector
00:44:19
clips into place we need to make sure
00:44:21
that we line up this gear selector here
00:44:23
with the notch in the valve body and
00:44:26
other than that it's just holding the
00:44:29
thing up and getting the screws going
00:44:32
which is more of a two-man job or if you
00:44:34
have a third hand now would be a good
00:44:36
time to use it
00:44:44
okay
00:44:46
we are in for the most part
00:44:58
it's too started
00:45:01
we have the Titan sequence on this paper
00:45:03
here that came with the kit and for the
00:45:05
all-wheel drive which this valve body
00:45:07
and transmission is it says that we have
00:45:09
four bolts here but we have three and
00:45:12
then we have four bolts on this side but
00:45:14
we have five so I'm just gonna swap
00:45:16
those around the torque is eight
00:45:18
nanometers
00:45:23
so the paper is showing 11 volts but
00:45:25
here we have 13. so I torqued all of
00:45:27
them down now I need to install the plug
00:45:29
adapter for the connector over there two
00:45:31
O-rings which I lubed up with
00:45:33
transmission fluid and there is a tab
00:45:35
here that we need to line up over there
00:45:37
so we need to just keep turning it until
00:45:39
that slots in and then I can push it all
00:45:41
the way in
00:45:44
oh there it is
00:45:47
it's fully seated
00:45:50
reconnect the connector
00:45:53
nice
00:45:57
Lube up this o-ring here
00:46:04
I'm going to slowly drive them in and
00:46:06
then we're gonna talk into spec
00:46:12
these bolts are torqued to 10 newton
00:46:14
meters and there is a torque sequence
00:46:16
I'll put a picture on the screen so
00:46:18
we're going to Torque from 1 to 21.
00:46:25
done now I can torque the drain plug to
00:46:27
8 Newton meters that's what it says here
00:46:32
okay it's already torqued the spec when
00:46:34
it comes to transmission fluid some will
00:46:35
tell you that if the transmission was
00:46:37
never serviced you should collect what
00:46:39
you drain out of it and put it back in
00:46:41
which kind of makes sense uh this thing
00:46:43
has 183 000 kilometers you saw the fluid
00:46:45
it was really dirty it's full of metal
00:46:47
and stuff from the transmission so
00:46:49
you're not disturbing anything if you
00:46:51
put it back in it's that lifetime fluid
00:46:53
in the past I've always put fresh fluid
00:46:55
in automatic transmissions and never had
00:46:57
any issues even on cars that had more
00:46:58
kilometers than this one I'm of the
00:47:00
opinion that if it's going to start
00:47:02
slipping or misbehaving with fresh fluid
00:47:04
then this thing wasn't going to last
00:47:06
long anyway and you need to rebuild it
00:47:08
so we're going to fill it up with
00:47:09
correct fluid from liquid Molly
00:47:11
and I love these bottles
00:47:14
so we're going to be filling until the
00:47:16
fluid starts coming out of the fill hole
00:47:18
so when it starts getting difficult to
00:47:20
squeeze the bottle I remove this filling
00:47:22
device here and top off the bottle that
00:47:25
way it's always easy to squeeze it
00:47:28
all right we are there
00:47:31
grab the plug
00:47:36
I'm reading ZF repair manual and
00:47:38
refilling procedure for this
00:47:39
transmission we need to do what we did
00:47:41
right now start filling the transmission
00:47:43
until it starts overflowing put the plug
00:47:45
in start the car and immediately top off
00:47:48
the fluid until it starts overflowing
00:47:51
put the plug back in then go back in the
00:47:53
car and put the car in Reverse drive and
00:47:56
then manually shift up to third gear and
00:47:59
hold each gear for three seconds then
00:48:01
engage Park then if the oil temperature
00:48:04
of the transmission is between 30 and 50
00:48:06
degrees Celsius we need to open the fill
00:48:08
plug if oil comes out then transmission
00:48:11
fluid level is correct if nothing comes
00:48:13
out then we need to start filling it
00:48:15
until it starts overflowing then let it
00:48:18
drip out refit the plug and that's it
00:48:20
transmission fluid level is correct
00:48:22
sounds simple but this includes a lot of
00:48:24
running around so I'm gonna prepare my
00:48:26
bottles
00:48:27
[Music]
00:48:29
foreign
00:48:31
doesn't have an option to monitor
00:48:33
temperature of the transmission so I
00:48:36
have some El Cheapo scanner here that's
00:48:38
showing me temperature of the
00:48:40
transmission of the oil and transmission
00:48:41
and it's showing that currently it's 20
00:48:44
degrees Celsius
00:48:45
so I'm going to hang this out of the
00:48:47
door like this
00:48:48
and I can monitor it like that now I'm
00:48:51
going to start the car and if the
00:48:52
transmission doesn't sound like a bucket
00:48:55
with bolts I'm gonna jump out raise the
00:48:57
car all the way in the air and start
00:48:59
filling the transmission
00:49:03
foreign
00:49:09
start pumping some fluid in
00:49:14
silver flowing
00:49:15
put the plug back in
00:49:19
what do we have for temperature
00:49:22
this thing is saying 23 degrees foot on
00:49:26
the brake reverse
00:49:28
one two three
00:49:32
drive one two three first second third
00:49:37
so this thing says it's 25 degrees
00:49:39
Celsius
00:49:42
all right it says 30 degrees so let's
00:49:44
start filling
00:49:46
good that transmission is full
00:49:51
so we need to let it drip out
00:49:54
it's done peeing
00:50:04
33 degrees Celsius
00:50:07
it's rather slow to warm up this
00:50:09
transmission
00:50:10
but drive
00:50:14
yep reverse
00:50:17
immediately
00:50:21
reverse
00:50:24
fixed
00:50:25
I didn't even drive it but it's fixed
00:50:32
all right I don't have time now to drive
00:50:34
it it's too late the lady's waiting
00:50:37
look at that the reverse is instant you
00:50:40
never did that before I don't want to
00:50:42
celebrate thoroughly although I
00:50:44
just did but we'll test drive it
00:50:48
tomorrow in daylight I gotta go pick up
00:50:50
churross on the way back home
00:50:54
Buenas
00:50:55
six tours later
00:50:58
let's see how this thing
00:51:01
drives in the yard
00:51:02
There You Go reverse
00:51:05
instant
00:51:06
it never did that before
00:51:09
even cold it took forever well three
00:51:12
seconds which is forever in transmission
00:51:14
days
00:51:19
thank you
00:51:21
yeah it's good
00:51:28
oh second
00:51:31
reverse
00:51:33
immediate
00:51:35
issue fixed
00:51:38
Drive happens immediately
00:51:43
I think that was third
00:51:48
let's see reverse
00:51:52
that's how it should be instant within a
00:51:55
second of course the real test is to
00:51:57
actually take the car on the road and
00:52:00
make sure it shifts fine through all of
00:52:01
the gears but we can't do that because
00:52:03
the car doesn't have tooth and it's not
00:52:05
registered
00:52:07
so we'll make sure it shifts fine then
00:52:09
but I think it'll be fine but for now
00:52:12
we're gonna call this fixed
00:52:15
Feels So Gangster the seats are very
00:52:17
comfying this thing yeah fun fact the
00:52:21
fuel cap that I removed they almost
00:52:23
threw away ended up on that thing over
00:52:25
there my landlords Range Rover he lost
00:52:28
his cap and I gave him that one because
00:52:31
that's Range Rover from era when BMW
00:52:33
owned Range Rover and he says it's
00:52:35
perfect for him so he saved 20 bucks
00:52:41
all right not gonna let it warm up all
00:52:43
the way and make sure it still shifts
00:52:45
fine oh yeah the windshield washer fluid
00:52:47
is leaking I think we have a problem
00:52:49
with the bottle
00:52:51
or the hose oh we have electrical tape
00:52:54
on the filler neck for the windshield
00:52:56
washer fluid perfect we all know
00:52:59
electrical tape has fantastic ceiling
00:53:03
properties
00:53:05
Navy SEAL is used indeed you know that
00:53:07
how do they like the look of this car
00:53:08
huh I think it looks good I mean I don't
00:53:11
like SUVs like I told you one of the
00:53:13
reasons is well these last two episodes
00:53:15
that is a bolt
00:53:18
for something
00:53:19
put that in the pocket say you didn't
00:53:22
find it remember first episode when I
00:53:24
said I don't really like SUVs and one of
00:53:26
the reasons is the maintenance
00:53:27
everything is far more complicated and
00:53:29
more difficult to do than a normal car
00:53:32
yeah I I stand by it the car is now nice
00:53:35
and toasty
00:53:37
reverse is working instantaneously
00:53:47
reverse
00:53:50
ladies and gentlemen we are fixing
00:53:52
complex issues here left and right
00:53:55
the transmission feels so much better
00:53:57
now as the word fixed it my guess is
00:53:59
fresh fluid and solenoids let me try to
00:54:01
do a turn now
00:54:04
yes I don't have to sit and wait like a
00:54:07
for the slush box to do its thing
00:54:12
I can hit the throttle immediately I
00:54:15
think we're gonna do Bilstein B6 sharks
00:54:17
on this thing
00:54:18
I think it'll suit the car really well
00:54:20
the only issue is they don't have them
00:54:22
in stock so hopefully by the time I'm
00:54:24
back from my vacation
00:54:25
they'll be available
00:54:27
so we can swap them out I'm very happy
00:54:29
with the progress on the X5 so far we
00:54:32
completed a third service of the engine
00:54:33
and transmission and ticked them off the
00:54:35
list in the next episode we'll replace
00:54:37
the flex disc on the prop shaft do some
00:54:40
suspension work refurbish the headlights
00:54:42
with new projectors brakes and make sure
00:54:44
the car is ready for German tooth
00:54:46
inspection I love it when after a long
00:54:48
wrenching session the car works as it
00:54:50
should and hopefully you found this
00:54:51
episode enjoyable as well as always
00:54:53
thank you so much for watching and if
00:54:55
you liked the video perhaps consider
00:54:57
subscribing as we have a lot more
00:54:58
wrenching content coming thanks again
00:55:00
and I'll see you soon
00:55:16
thank you
