00:00:00
You've named Governor Landry to be new
00:00:01
special envoy to Greenland. How do you
00:00:03
what do you see that role entailing and
00:00:04
do is it still your intention that
00:00:06
Greenland
00:00:07
viewed Louisiana the Louisiana purchase.
00:00:10
He said I'm governor of Louisiana and he
00:00:13
said I would love I didn't call him he
00:00:14
called me. He's very proactive. He's a
00:00:18
great guy. He's a deal guy. He's a deal
00:00:20
maker type guy and we need it for
00:00:24
national protection. We need Greenland
00:00:25
for national protection. And they have a
00:00:27
very small population.
00:00:29
And I don't know, they say Denmark, but
00:00:31
Denmark has spent no money. They have no
00:00:33
military protection. They say that
00:00:36
Denmark was there 300 years ago or
00:00:38
something with a boat. Well, we were
00:00:39
there with boats, too, I'm sure. So,
00:00:49
for
00:00:59
Denmark.
00:01:01
Um,
00:01:10
but what do you know? The United States
00:01:12
continues to alienate its closest
00:01:14
allies, even more than many thought
00:01:17
possible, thanks to our current
00:01:19
president. You see, just this week,
00:01:21
Trump appointed a US lawmaker as a
00:01:24
special envoy to Greenland, an
00:01:27
autonomous Danish territory. And well,
00:01:30
response from Copenhagen and the EU
00:01:32
shows that US diplomacy is unraveling
00:01:35
before our eyes. Trump, clearly
00:01:37
undeterred by diplomatic norms or the
00:01:40
plain fact that you can't just annex
00:01:42
another country, appointed Louisiana
00:01:44
Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy
00:01:47
to Greenland. That's right, not
00:01:49
ambassador, not negotiator, a special
00:01:52
envoy. So why is that a problem? Well,
00:01:54
because Greenland's part of Denmark, a
00:01:57
NATO ally and an EU partner. And as to
00:02:00
be expected, the move has ignited a
00:02:02
full-blown diplomatic protest from
00:02:04
Denmark. It is not for me here to
00:02:07
comment on on US decisions. But what can
00:02:09
I what I can say about the um EU
00:02:12
position is the following which has been
00:02:13
our long-standing position on the matter
00:02:16
that preserving the territorial
00:02:18
integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, its
00:02:21
sovereignty and the inviability of its
00:02:25
borders is essential for the European
00:02:28
Union.
00:02:30
Denmark's foreign minister declared the
00:02:32
move quote completely unacceptable and
00:02:34
has called in the US ambassador for an
00:02:37
explanation. To be expected, the Danish
00:02:39
government is insisting that territorial
00:02:41
integrity and sovereignty must be
00:02:43
respected and has reaffirmed that
00:02:45
Greenland belongs to Greenlandals, not
00:02:48
to foreign governments with robust
00:02:51
mineral interests and an egoomaniac
00:02:53
hellbent on taking it for himself. But I
00:02:55
mean, why don't we just ask the people
00:02:57
of Greenland what they think of a
00:02:59
possible MAGA takeover?
00:03:01
>> A lot about Trump and also their opinion
00:03:05
about Trump.
00:03:06
>> I hate it.
00:03:07
>> And uh basically, I don't know what he's
00:03:11
I don't know what he's aiming at.
00:03:12
>> My me personally, I want to stick with
00:03:14
Danish government.
00:03:18
Well, most of the people that we talked
00:03:20
with said that they did not support
00:03:22
Trump's comments and found them
00:03:24
offensive.
00:03:25
>> And Danish and Greenlandic leaders have
00:03:27
made it clear throughout Donald Trump's
00:03:29
reign so far. You cannot annex another
00:03:31
country. It doesn't matter if you
00:03:33
appoint an envoy.
00:03:34
>> This reeks of someone who has been
00:03:36
lobbying the administration for a year
00:03:38
for a good job um to to get get out of
00:03:42
his current job. And this is what they
00:03:44
give him, which I bet you was not his
00:03:46
first choice considering he has no
00:03:49
experience in diplomacy, no experience
00:03:51
in foreign policy, no experience in the
00:03:54
Arctic, no experience with the Kingdom
00:03:56
of Denmark. But yet now he is
00:03:58
responsible solely responsible for
00:04:00
getting Greenland. Well, Jeff, one
00:04:03
thing, Greenland is a little different
00:04:05
from Louisiana. Uh you may want to go
00:04:08
there in January and see for yourself
00:04:10
because I bet you'll be running for the
00:04:11
hills real fast. Um, but second, look
00:04:14
guys, in in an administration of
00:04:16
extraordinarily unqualified
00:04:19
appointments, and we all know who they
00:04:20
are, this one might actually take the
00:04:22
cake for God's sake. Um, [laughter] and
00:04:25
two, look, it just boggles my mind that
00:04:29
we have to end the year this way. Um,
00:04:31
because the only thing this appointment
00:04:33
really does is serve to poke in the eye
00:04:36
once again some of our best allies, and
00:04:38
that's the Danes and the Greenlanders.
00:04:40
So on behalf of a hell of a lot of
00:04:42
Americans, Danes, Greenlanders, my
00:04:45
friends, um I'm so sorry.
00:04:47
>> But this isn't just a Danish problem,
00:04:50
right? It's become a broader European
00:04:52
issue, which is why EU leaders have
00:04:55
publicly backed Denmark's territorial
00:04:58
sovereignty and stressed that national
00:05:00
borders within the EU framework must be
00:05:03
respected. I mean, the fact that we're
00:05:04
having this conversation in 2025 is
00:05:07
ridiculous. An EU spokesperson
00:05:10
emphasized that preserving the
00:05:11
territorial integrity of the Kingdom of
00:05:13
Denmark, including Greenland, is
00:05:15
essential. So, first I I'd like your
00:05:18
reaction to seeing Denmark, a NATO
00:05:20
treaty ally, looking across the Atlantic
00:05:23
at the US and seeing a potential threat.
00:05:27
Tell me how the two countries got here.
00:05:32
We've had great relations with uh the
00:05:34
United States uh for
00:05:37
centuries and uh we have appreciated uh
00:05:40
the relations we've had since the
00:05:41
Americans helped liberate Europe and our
00:05:44
country in the Second World War and
00:05:46
we've been very loyal allies uh to each
00:05:48
other for the past 80 years. We
00:05:50
participated in all the major uh US-led
00:05:54
wars in Korea, in the in the Gulf, and
00:05:58
and many other places in Afghanistan,
00:05:59
Iraq, and so on. So, it's it's um it's
00:06:03
not great that now we're um receiving
00:06:06
threats uh regarding Greenland, which is
00:06:08
the main concern from a Danish point of
00:06:11
of view.
00:06:12
>> Yeah. Listen, as I've reminded viewers
00:06:14
and others, Denmark did some of the
00:06:17
hardest combat duty in Afghanistan as
00:06:19
well and lost many of its soldiers and
00:06:21
quite a large percentage of of Denmark's
00:06:23
overall forces there. Uh, as you know,
00:06:27
there are many in this country who
00:06:29
disagree with the US president on its
00:06:32
approach to Denmark, including both
00:06:34
Democratic and Republican lawmakers.
00:06:37
Do you believe there is any anything
00:06:40
standing in the way of President Trump
00:06:43
continuing to antagonize Denmark? So I
00:06:48
mean my question is is this just about
00:06:49
President Trump or do you believe the
00:06:51
entire country in effect has turned
00:06:53
against Denmark?
00:06:55
>> No, we don't believe the entire United
00:06:57
States of America has turned against
00:06:59
Denmark or against Europe. We know very
00:07:01
well that there's a lot of different
00:07:02
opinions in the American public. And
00:07:04
we've also seen polls uh citing that
00:07:07
there's not a majority of the population
00:07:09
that agrees with the idea of starting a
00:07:12
war with Denmark to take over Greenland
00:07:14
that doesn't want to be part of the
00:07:15
United States. So I would I would hope
00:07:17
that reason uh would stand in the way of
00:07:19
of this um happening.
00:07:21
>> And here's the thing, right? This isn't
00:07:22
just about Greenland. It's a broader
00:07:25
issue. you know, the very isolationist
00:07:28
strategy that even the most staunch
00:07:30
Republicans have warned against in the
00:07:32
past, Donald Trump is hellbent on
00:07:35
upholding. What's interesting about our
00:07:37
country if you study history is that uh
00:07:39
there are some isms that occasionally
00:07:41
pop up pop up. One is isolationism
00:07:45
and it's evil twin protectionism and its
00:07:47
evil triplet nivism. So if you study the
00:07:51
20s for example, there was uh there was
00:07:54
an American first policy that said who
00:07:56
cares what happens in Europe.
00:07:59
Well, what happened in Europe mattered
00:08:02
eventually because of World War II.
00:08:04
There was Smoot Holly which was a part
00:08:05
of an economic policy which basically
00:08:07
said we don't want trade. In other
00:08:08
words, let's throw up barriers. And
00:08:10
there was an immigration policy that I
00:08:13
think during this period argued we had
00:08:14
too many Jews and too many Italians,
00:08:16
therefore we should have no immigrants.
00:08:17
And my point to you is as we've been
00:08:19
through this kind of period of
00:08:21
isolationism, protections of native
00:08:23
nativism. I'm a little concerned that we
00:08:25
may be going through the same period
00:08:27
because at the exact same time that
00:08:29
Trump is provoking Denmark and the EU
00:08:32
over Greenland, he is also alienating
00:08:35
allies through his aggressive US
00:08:37
maritime operations, particularly in the
00:08:40
Caribbean. I mean, Trump officials have
00:08:42
made it clear their intentions regarding
00:08:44
Venezuela. And according to multiple
00:08:46
reports, the United Kingdom deliberately
00:08:48
withheld intelligence from the United
00:08:50
States regarding these very attacks.
00:08:53
This comes after Trump authorized US
00:08:55
naval actions against suspected vessels
00:08:58
near Venezuelan waters. Action that
00:09:00
British officials feared could lead to
00:09:02
illegal strikes or escalation. Like we
00:09:05
just report on these things like it's
00:09:06
normal. I mean, this is the United
00:09:07
Kingdom, America's closest intelligence
00:09:09
partner, part of the Five Eyes Alliance,
00:09:11
and they decided, you know what? We
00:09:13
can't trust how the Trump administration
00:09:15
would use shared intelligence and so
00:09:18
we're going to just stop sharing it or
00:09:20
some of it at least. A breaking news
00:09:22
exclusive now coming into the situation
00:09:24
and watch this. The United Kingdom is
00:09:27
suspending, listen to this, suspending
00:09:29
some of its intelligence sharing with
00:09:31
the US because of the Trump
00:09:33
administration's strikes against alleged
00:09:35
drug boats in the Caribbean. We are
00:09:38
joined now by senior White House
00:09:39
reporter Kevin Lipac and CNN national
00:09:42
security [music] correspondent Natasha
00:09:43
Bertrren. Natasha to you first with this
00:09:45
exclusive reporting. I mean this is a
00:09:47
big deal. The UK is arguably the closest
00:09:50
ally to the United States when it comes
00:09:52
to intelligence sharing. What else do we
00:09:53
know?
00:09:56
>> Yeah, Pam, it's a really significant
00:09:58
rupture here. Essentially, what we're
00:10:00
learning is that the UK is no longer
00:10:02
sharing intelligence with the US about
00:10:03
these suspected drug drug trafficking
00:10:05
vessels in the Caribbean because it does
00:10:08
not want to be complicit in the US
00:10:09
military's strikes on these drug vessels
00:10:12
and believes fundamentally that the US
00:10:14
military's use of force against these
00:10:16
vessels violates international law
00:10:19
according to multiple sources that we
00:10:21
spoke to. Now, previously, the UK had
00:10:23
been happy uh to help the United States
00:10:26
uh locate and interdict vessels that
00:10:29
were transiting the Caribbean that
00:10:31
appeared to be trafficking drugs. But
00:10:33
the key difference, of course, is that
00:10:34
it was helping the Coast Guard intercept
00:10:37
those vessels, arrest those on board,
00:10:38
seize the drugs, and allowing these
00:10:40
individuals to have some semblance of
00:10:42
due process. But now the US of course
00:10:45
has started striking these boats uh
00:10:48
unilaterally with military force killing
00:10:50
everyone on board. The total now for
00:10:52
number of people killed is around 76.
00:10:55
And we're told that the UK is deeply
00:10:57
uncomfortable with that and they believe
00:10:59
that it is uh pretty blatantly illegal.
00:11:02
>> America's allies, they're no longer
00:11:04
confident that the US will act
00:11:07
responsibly under Donald Trump's
00:11:08
leadership, whether it's diplomatically
00:11:11
or militarily. And that's why this
00:11:13
Greenland appointment is getting the
00:11:14
reaction it deserves. Because while I'd
00:11:17
like to chalk this up to Donald Trump's
00:11:19
latest Epstein distraction.
00:11:21
>> Like for instance, today we're building
00:11:23
the biggest ships in the world, most
00:11:24
powerful ships in the world, and they're
00:11:26
asking me questions about Jeffrey
00:11:28
Epstein. I thought that was finished. I
00:11:31
believe they gave over 100,000 pages of
00:11:33
documents.
00:11:34
>> He's made it abundantly clear that he's
00:11:36
not giving up on this very idea.
00:11:38
Unsurprisingly, the man with countless
00:11:40
sexual assault accusations and who was
00:11:42
found liable of committing sexual
00:11:44
assault can't take no for an answer,
00:11:47
which honestly now poses the question,
00:11:49
is the United States still a stabilizing
00:11:52
force or a destabilizing one? That
00:11:55
question used to be asked about Russia,
00:11:57
and now it's being asked about the
00:11:59
country helmed by a man desperate to
00:12:02
emulate his authoritarian heroes.
