00:00:00
Once upon a time, someone paid $275,000
00:00:06
for this prestigious W12 Bentley. And I
00:00:12
didn't.
00:00:17
I waited until it was essentially run
00:00:19
into the ground and got it for an
00:00:22
unbelievable 96% off of its original
00:00:26
price. Mind you, there are some issues.
00:00:28
Mold is one of them. There's mold
00:00:31
everywhere. Look at this. It was painted
00:00:33
with a spatula. The bodywork is in less
00:00:36
than ideal shape. So, this is completely
00:00:39
caved in. However, the equipment is
00:00:41
good. Has an inbuilt pond full with
00:00:43
water. It's low mileage, only 161,000
00:00:48
mi. It supposedly runs good, but I
00:00:50
bought it with an electrical issue where
00:00:52
the whole car cuts off after about 10 15
00:00:55
minutes of running. What I'm getting at,
00:00:57
it's the worst. Bentley flying turd
00:00:58
[music] out there and somehow things
00:01:01
will go from worse to worse sir.
00:01:03
Foolishly I decided to try [music] to
00:01:05
fix it. It was shlept back to the shop
00:01:08
and we started with water intrusion. The
00:01:10
right side of the interior is literally
00:01:12
swimming in water. The sunroof drain was
00:01:14
clogged which was an easy enough fix. I
00:01:16
took the front carpet out fully flipped
00:01:19
up the rear one and started drying the
00:01:21
interior. Ah, and a nice rust spot was
00:01:23
hiding there. We got the car running up
00:01:25
to operating temp a few times and it was
00:01:28
running rather nicely. Did I just fix
00:01:30
it?
00:01:32
No. That is up until it started leaking
00:01:35
something off camera. I jumped in the
00:01:37
car, turned it off, looked at the
00:01:38
cooling gauge to make sure it wasn't
00:01:40
overheating, and it wasn't. The gauge
00:01:42
was exactly at 90° C. Remember that for
00:01:45
later. We have a slight coolant leak
00:01:47
here. That's not it, though. There's
00:01:49
something leaking below. Oh, I don't
00:01:51
know if it's the tank and maybe that's
00:01:53
why this doesn't feel like coolant. It's
00:01:54
water. We got to let it cool off. That's
00:01:56
uh water. That's not coolant. And it's
00:01:58
definitely what was leaking earlier. So,
00:02:01
let's see where it's coming from.
00:02:02
>> This is a coolant pressure tester kit
00:02:04
with which we can put pressure on the
00:02:06
cooling system and troubleshoot the
00:02:08
leak. No, no, no. I think I found the
00:02:12
winner.
00:02:14
Yep, that feels good. I've never used
00:02:16
that tool kit before. I bought it a long
00:02:17
time ago. Never had the need to use it.
00:02:19
So, now you're going to put some
00:02:22
pressure on the cooling system.
00:02:25
And where is it leaking from?
00:02:30
I can hear it. It's definitely from this
00:02:32
connection here.
00:02:34
Is that the only the only spot where
00:02:36
it's leaking? I don't see anything else.
00:02:37
So, maybe that is the only spot.
00:02:40
That's 15 PSI. It's plenty. Yeah, it's
00:02:43
leaking from this line. Let's see if
00:02:44
it's the rubber hose or
00:02:47
the tank that's at fault.
00:02:54
Ah, I think the nipple is broken. Yep.
00:02:57
Yes, the nipple is made out of cheese.
00:03:00
There you can see the crack.
00:03:04
That's some crappy plastic, man. Now,
00:03:07
how in the schnitle do you remove this
00:03:09
expansion tank? It's tucked underneath
00:03:11
of the fender. Hopefully, I don't need
00:03:13
to remove the fender, but let's find
00:03:15
out. M.
00:03:20
So that's the air filter box. What does
00:03:22
the filter look like? 2019.
00:03:25
So not terribly old. Little bit dirty,
00:03:28
but not the end of the world.
00:03:31
Does it just pull up? I see an
00:03:32
aftermarket clamp there. So someone was
00:03:34
in here.
00:03:36
Okay. Plug the math. Uhhuh.
00:03:41
Okay, that was easy. The valve cover
00:03:43
gasket is leaking there up front as you
00:03:45
can see. And look at this W12. It's
00:03:48
pushed all the way forward over the
00:03:50
front axle. So, two VR6s. It looks
00:03:54
pretty small, I gotta say. It starts
00:03:55
from there to there. It'll be fun
00:03:58
working on this thing. So, no one ever
00:03:59
Is that the steering rack on the top?
00:04:02
How's that even possible? Let's cover
00:04:04
the air intake. Don't want anything
00:04:06
falling in there. I'm still not
00:04:07
convinced that's the only coolant leak
00:04:09
that this thing has.
00:04:14
Right. We got to uncip this from the
00:04:16
tank.
00:04:19
There it is. All right. And then the one
00:04:21
on the bottom. And we should have splash
00:04:23
splashes thing going on there.
00:04:27
You ready? No. Good.
00:04:30
Yeah, that's just pure water. So, this
00:04:32
was a pre-existing issue. Now, let's see
00:04:35
if we can just pull it out. That would
00:04:37
be neat if Yes.
00:04:42
Oh,
00:04:43
feels like it's ready to come out. It's
00:04:45
just there's a lot going on here. Aha,
00:04:47
we have an coolant level sensor. Plug
00:04:49
that.
00:04:52
Hey, that was easy. Surprisingly easy.
00:04:55
All right, I'm going to go search for a
00:04:56
replacement part. And once that comes
00:04:58
in, can perhaps even drive this thing.
00:05:00
Good news, everybody. It's a brand new
00:05:03
day, which means a brand new leak. The
00:05:06
tire is leaking. Remember how the brake
00:05:07
fluid reservoir was empty and I topped
00:05:09
it off in the previous episode? Well,
00:05:11
guess where that went? Precisely what I
00:05:13
want to see on my expensive Bentley.
00:05:15
Anyway, let's get this elephante up in
00:05:17
the air so we can see what that is. But
00:05:20
also, I'm pretty sure it's not just the
00:05:21
expansion tank that's leaking. Something
00:05:23
in that corner popped and it's leaking
00:05:25
badly now. So, we need to figure out
00:05:27
that as well. I would like just to point
00:05:29
out that I brought the car in, started
00:05:31
fixing one thing, and in the meantime,
00:05:33
three more things broke. Two coolant
00:05:36
leaks and now the suspension leak. I
00:05:39
hate cars that don't have dedicated
00:05:41
jacking points. Should be illegal.
00:05:44
Smashed to bits, man. I'm not so sure
00:05:46
that this will work. [clears throat]
00:05:48
Let's try. Where is the jacking point,
00:05:51
dude? Is that it or this smashed thing
00:05:54
here? All right, let's try this. The
00:05:56
floor is pretty ruined already.
00:06:02
I mean, I can't mess it up more than
00:06:04
what it is right now.
00:06:08
It's up.
00:06:10
[laughter]
00:06:12
You can feel the weight. It's leaning
00:06:13
towards the front.
00:06:17
Let's check the suspension for play. The
00:06:19
wheels are destroyed. Tires are old.
00:06:22
Brakes are shot.
00:06:26
Well, that feels okay. And yep, the
00:06:29
steering rack is here. Have a look in
00:06:32
here. That's the steering rack. That's
00:06:34
the massive air shock and the line that
00:06:36
goes to it and everything inside. At
00:06:39
least visually looks okay. Let's check
00:06:41
out the other side. But you can see just
00:06:43
how rusty the brake disc is. There's a
00:06:46
big lip. The wheels are completely
00:06:48
destroyed. And these are pretty ugly
00:06:50
wheels, I might add. If we restore this
00:06:51
car, we need to get different wheels. I
00:06:54
already found a set online, but it's
00:06:56
it's expensive and I don't want to spend
00:06:58
start spending money on this car until I
00:07:00
figure out what I want to do with it.
00:07:04
[laughter]
00:07:05
That feels like play to me. But from
00:07:07
where? So, it's side to side play.
00:07:11
I think it's from this tie rod end here.
00:07:15
See, it shouldn't have that much play.
00:07:17
Another destroyed brake disc.
00:07:20
Air shock. And you can see a bit of rust
00:07:23
on the lines there. And I think this
00:07:26
might have some play, but I need to
00:07:27
verify. We need to get the car further
00:07:28
up in the air. Fender liner eaten. And
00:07:31
then this area is really bad here. Let's
00:07:34
see. The rear left. No side to side
00:07:36
play.
00:07:38
No play in this wheel. The wheel that's
00:07:40
leaking.
00:07:43
Oh, that's good. That's good as well.
00:07:46
Does he have LSD? It does not.
00:07:53
I mean, who knew? It's not just BMW. Del
00:07:56
oil.
00:07:58
Billstein. Nice.
00:08:02
It's good. I don't even know where to
00:08:03
start, I guess. Let's start in the
00:08:05
front. The front cover completely
00:08:08
missing. The bumper broken. And look at
00:08:10
the state of the radiator and the fins.
00:08:14
It's destroyed. There's no other word.
00:08:16
It's been battered on by stones and
00:08:19
everything. And I think that's due for
00:08:22
replacement. We have oil leaks all over
00:08:24
the place. A big one from the oil filter
00:08:27
housing. At least that's easy to fix.
00:08:30
Then more oil dripping from above. A zip
00:08:34
tie here. And then the radiator even
00:08:36
from this side does not look the
00:08:38
greatest
00:08:40
leak
00:08:42
from these connections here. That's oil.
00:08:45
And then look at the state of whatever
00:08:47
that is. I don't know if that's vibasto
00:08:50
or some sort of heater or whatever, but
00:08:54
coolant goes to it and it's in horrific
00:08:56
state. We have some sort of small
00:08:58
muffler here. So yeah, that's probably
00:09:00
Vibasto. Yeah, it even says that. So
00:09:02
this is for the for heating. You know,
00:09:04
when you're in your house, you can turn
00:09:05
on the Vibasto and it's going to heat up
00:09:08
the cabin. Lots of surface corrosion all
00:09:10
over the place. There you can see the
00:09:13
rusty wheel and we have Billstein air
00:09:15
suspension. So no hydraulic suspension
00:09:17
on this car whatsoever. And I still need
00:09:20
to determine where that play is coming
00:09:22
from. But one of these ball joints here.
00:09:24
This cover is at least here. And then if
00:09:26
you go to this side, I can't see any
00:09:28
coolant related parts from this
00:09:30
position. So I'll have to look from
00:09:31
above. We have a homemade bracket there.
00:09:34
And look at the state of that CV axle.
00:09:37
Yeah, that's been slinging grease for a
00:09:39
while. Both of the clamps on the left
00:09:41
side and the right side are gone. That
00:09:43
rubber boot actually looks freshish, a
00:09:46
lot fresher than that one. So, someone
00:09:48
was definitely in here before. And also,
00:09:50
we have a leak here from this flange
00:09:54
here on the transmission. This is
00:09:55
actually front diff. Oh, and another
00:09:57
thing, someone was already in here. Look
00:09:59
at the state of that knuckle. Someone
00:10:01
was hammering the crap out of that
00:10:02
there. So, that was replaced at some
00:10:05
point. The oil pan looks dry. We have
00:10:09
bushings here on the front subframe that
00:10:12
looks toasty on the right side as well.
00:10:14
So that probably needs doing. I do
00:10:16
wonder if this engine was ever out
00:10:18
because they are known for having vacuum
00:10:21
leaks as a and for that you got to drop
00:10:23
the whole engine. But given how many
00:10:24
kilometers this thing has quite possible
00:10:26
that the engine was out and you know
00:10:28
quite a lot here is not original. Then
00:10:30
if we move down the line, speaking of
00:10:32
not original, look at the state
00:10:34
[clears throat] of the exhaust. Look at
00:10:35
those welds. Think that's Bentley doing?
00:10:38
I don't think so. That bolt is broken
00:10:40
there as well. Another one missing
00:10:42
there. So the exhaust was definitely off
00:10:45
at some point, but floor thus far looks
00:10:48
good and rust free. That's Volkswagen
00:10:51
for you. Let's move further down the
00:10:52
line. Yeah, someone used goop there to
00:10:55
seal the exhaust. And there. And that
00:10:59
that's where the brake fluid is going.
00:11:02
Look at the state of this wheel. It is
00:11:04
totally destroyed. The caliper is
00:11:07
leaking heavily. I guess from the
00:11:09
connection there or that box. This is an
00:11:12
electronic parking brake. So, this
00:11:13
entire caliper needs to come off and see
00:11:15
what's going on. I can't believe someone
00:11:17
drove it like that. That's insane. So,
00:11:20
that's where we are losing our brake
00:11:21
fluid. The output shaft a bit rusty, but
00:11:24
doesn't look terrible. And again, we
00:11:26
have no play in the suspension in the
00:11:28
back. And if you look at the state of
00:11:30
the bushings, that looks quite okay. The
00:11:32
diff is dry. Looks like a skinny diff.
00:11:35
But look at that. It's an F1 car. Look
00:11:38
at that downforce. That's a nice design.
00:11:41
I think this was one of the marketing
00:11:43
tricks they used and how this car
00:11:45
managed to get up to high speed and stay
00:11:48
stable. Stuff like this downforce. So,
00:11:50
we definitely need a front panel in the
00:11:52
front if we want to do a high-speed run.
00:11:54
This popped out. The exhaust tips.
00:11:58
They're inside. So, fake tips there. So,
00:12:01
that's the tour of the Bentley. It's
00:12:03
good. You know, like I said in the first
00:12:05
episode, it's it's really good. Okay. I
00:12:08
Let's put the car down on the ground and
00:12:09
see if we can find that coolant leak.
00:12:12
Must be coming somewhere from above.
00:12:13
Man, this car needs a crap ton of work.
00:12:15
There's a lot of oil leaks here as well.
00:12:18
This could be from the valve cover
00:12:19
gasket. It could be from that power
00:12:21
steering cooler.
00:12:24
Down it goes. Wow, that was that's
00:12:27
something. The condition of this car. So
00:12:29
fixable still.
00:12:31
Okay, let's see if we can find a coolant
00:12:33
leak. Can't be just a bottle. That was
00:12:35
way too much coolant for it to be just a
00:12:37
bottle. Well, I've been searching, but I
00:12:39
can't find a smoking gun. There's one
00:12:42
line that runs underneath. It doesn't
00:12:44
look like it's leaking. Then some
00:12:46
connections here that go to the
00:12:48
radiator. Maybe that's leaking. We'll
00:12:49
have to refit the expansion tank and
00:12:51
then pressure test it and see if it's
00:12:53
leaking somewhere else as well. Okay,
00:12:55
now that we know how fabulous this car
00:12:58
is, I think we can all agree that it's
00:13:01
it's total. Everything is shot on this
00:13:03
once very expensive vehicle. So, at this
00:13:06
point, I'm thinking, let's just get it
00:13:09
running and driving safely. I don't want
00:13:11
to die in a Bentley. That means we got
00:13:13
to fix the rear right caliper, the
00:13:15
coolant leaks, the CV boots. We can fix
00:13:17
that with some clamps. And I think at
00:13:19
that point, we can go for a nice drive
00:13:21
because I also want to see and feel if
00:13:24
the transmission is good, if the
00:13:26
suspension is good, and especially if
00:13:28
that electrical issue with the engine
00:13:30
comes back, if it's going to stay
00:13:31
running for a while or it's just going
00:13:33
to cut off. And then we can decide what
00:13:35
we want to do with this thing. I mean,
00:13:37
it needs complete restoration. The whole
00:13:39
body mechanically, the interior is in
00:13:41
decentish condition, so that's not too
00:13:43
bad, but everything else is just
00:13:45
terrible. And it makes absolutely no
00:13:47
logical or financial sense to restore
00:13:50
this car. So,
00:13:53
I don't know. We'll see. Here's the
00:13:55
brand new expansion tank. And Volkswagen
00:13:57
Feton uses the same expansion tank, same
00:14:00
part number. So, I picked this up
00:14:02
locally. €168.
00:14:05
You can get it a bit cheaper online, but
00:14:06
I needed this fast. The tanks are a
00:14:09
little bit different. Maybe you can see
00:14:11
this one has bigger bulge here and this
00:14:15
tiny hole for the screw from the fender.
00:14:18
And this one is more flat. So, I think
00:14:20
it should still work. The part numbers
00:14:21
are the same. First, we need to transfer
00:14:23
over this cap here.
00:14:25
Well, that broke. Maybe it was leaking
00:14:27
from here.
00:14:29
This just broke. All right, I got that
00:14:32
transferred over. Sneaky sneakers in
00:14:33
time.
00:14:36
Plug in the level sensor. Click. Mhm.
00:14:39
There's a grommet here that we need to
00:14:41
nail. Let's push this through. There we
00:14:45
are.
00:14:48
Confirmed. Feton expansion tank does
00:14:51
fit. I didn't even look up the price for
00:14:53
the Bentley one, but it's definitely not
00:14:55
going to be cheaper than this one.
00:15:00
And that's the expansion tank replaced.
00:15:03
This
00:15:04
is the correct coolant from Liquali for
00:15:07
Volkswagen for this car, KSF12 Evo. And
00:15:12
I diluted a little bit of that with
00:15:13
distilled water. I don't want to waste a
00:15:15
good coolant until we verify that the
00:15:17
system is tight and not leaking. And
00:15:20
also, I'm pretty sure we're going to be
00:15:21
draining this coolant again cuz, you
00:15:22
know, maybe the engine needs to come
00:15:24
out. So, ignition on,
00:15:27
set the fan to the lowest setting and
00:15:30
temperature to the highest.
00:15:34
There. Now I can start adding coolant.
00:15:35
Should probably get a funnel, huh? Ah,
00:15:37
it's okay.
00:15:40
Any leaks so far?
00:15:45
The level is at max. So, let's pressure
00:15:48
test it.
00:15:51
All right, got one bar of pressure
00:15:52
there. It appears to be leak free. Oh,
00:15:55
ma. Been a few minutes
00:15:59
talking to my wife on the phone and
00:16:01
there are no leaks at all and the
00:16:04
pressure is steady. It's not dropping.
00:16:07
So, that's good to see. I don't see any
00:16:09
leaks. So, maybe it was a cooling
00:16:11
bottle. Now, we're going to put the maps
00:16:13
back on and the air filter. Let's start
00:16:15
it. Let it run and see how it behaves.
00:16:24
Okay. Any immediate coolant leaks?
00:16:28
No. I'm going to let it warm up and
00:16:30
monitor the temperature
00:16:33
and let's see if we have any leaks. Like
00:16:35
that was a lot of coolant coming from
00:16:36
this area here. And the expansion tank
00:16:38
is right over there. Maybe it kind of
00:16:41
dribbled that way down. I'm not so sure.
00:16:43
It's been running over 20 minutes now.
00:16:46
And just listen to it.
00:16:49
It's smooth as silk. It in spite of
00:16:50
once. No codes, no coolant leaks. The
00:16:53
temperature is right at 90° C. So,
00:16:56
fixed.
00:16:58
Probably not. But at this point, I can
00:17:00
shut the engine off. And then let's look
00:17:02
into that rear eye caliper and see which
00:17:04
parts I need to order because it's
00:17:06
Friday. We need parts.
00:17:17
Oh no, we have a safety locking nut.
00:17:22
Didn't I see that somewhere? Or was the
00:17:24
the other car that I bought? All right,
00:17:26
I'm going to go through the car and see
00:17:27
if I can find that.
00:17:29
The locking nut was in the trunk. I
00:17:31
think Taylor Swift.
00:17:34
How heavy is this wheel?
00:17:37
Made in Turkey. Bentley. What I want to
00:17:40
know now is where is this caliper
00:17:42
leaking from? Is it from the housing for
00:17:44
the parking brake motor? It looks
00:17:46
properly bad. So, I'm going to clean it
00:17:48
up a little bit, step on the brake, and
00:17:50
let's see if we can see where the leak
00:17:51
is coming from. Perhaps from the
00:17:53
electric parking brake housing.
00:17:56
So, these should be the same calipers as
00:17:58
an Audi A8 V3. So, we should be able to
00:18:01
get a rebuild kit for this.
00:18:05
Okay, I'm going to go push the brake
00:18:07
pedal in my hand. You can start yelling
00:18:08
at the TV or laptop or your phone.
00:18:15
What do we have? That looks fresh. Let's
00:18:17
wipe it off again.
00:18:21
Okay. So, it looks like it's coming from
00:18:22
the housing of the electric parking
00:18:26
brake. There you can see a fresh fluid
00:18:28
coming out there. As this is an
00:18:31
electronic parking brake, you need to
00:18:32
use the diagnostic tool to retract the
00:18:35
parking brake and then you can remove
00:18:37
the caliper. I don't have that
00:18:38
diagnostic tool. I disconnected the
00:18:40
battery. I can turn the caliper, which
00:18:42
means the disc, which means that the
00:18:45
parking brake is not engaged. So, let's
00:18:47
remove it. First, disconnect the plug
00:18:49
for the parking brake.
00:18:53
There we go. Unbolt the brake line.
00:18:57
Okay, this is the flare wrench.
00:19:00
There we go.
00:19:02
That's not good.
00:19:06
Not at all. Rust loser.
00:19:09
See if I can grip that line somehow.
00:19:13
Oh, it's working. Oh, this is going to
00:19:17
take forever.
00:19:22
There it is. Okay, I have a plug here
00:19:24
for the brake line so it doesn't drip
00:19:26
constantly. There. All right, that only
00:19:29
took 15 hours to do. I'm going to try
00:19:31
and push the pads in.
00:19:35
Yep, that worked. That's good. Remove
00:19:38
the heavily oxidized Bentley cover.
00:19:41
Don't know if that needs to come off,
00:19:42
but I do want to remove it.
00:19:46
Is that just a beauty cover? Pretty much
00:19:48
thin 17 there and 13 on the back.
00:19:58
How about the pads? Well, we don't care
00:20:00
about the pads at this point. They still
00:20:02
have some meat left on them. Let's take
00:20:04
apart this caliper.
00:20:08
Okay, [snorts]
00:20:09
that's not good.
00:20:13
Well, bugger. That's going to round off.
00:20:19
Crap.
00:20:21
Nope. Just rounding that off. Let's
00:20:23
first remove the parking brake
00:20:25
mechanism.
00:20:32
Super corroded.
00:20:35
All right,
00:20:39
there it is. That is that's [snorts]
00:20:41
where it was leaking from here. Utterly
00:20:43
destroyed. There's also a code for this
00:20:47
motor here. This simply didn't work
00:20:48
anymore. Okay, we have an O-ring here.
00:20:54
Clip.
00:20:56
Now, if you wind down the screw here,
00:20:59
the piston should come out. At least
00:21:04
I think so. Oh, it's a little bit clear.
00:21:06
Out.
00:21:11
There it is.
00:21:13
The piston is out. Nice and easy. You
00:21:15
just got to wind that screw. Super
00:21:17
bizarre design.
00:21:21
So, this is what failed. this O-ring on
00:21:24
the back and the brake fluid was coming
00:21:26
out of this hole into the housing of the
00:21:29
electric parking brake and then down
00:21:31
into the wheel.
00:21:34
So bad. The housing inside is clean.
00:21:37
That's good. Sounds orange. So, this
00:21:40
caliper thankfully is the exact same one
00:21:43
as for Audi A8 D3, except Bentley
00:21:47
drilled four holes here, added some
00:21:50
threads for that Bentley cap, but
00:21:52
otherwise identical. So, I can order a
00:21:54
rebuild kit for that car, and hopefully
00:21:56
we can sort out this caliper. But here's
00:21:58
what we have here. an O-ring that
00:22:00
failed,
00:22:01
a plate, needle bearings,
00:22:07
a shaft, and this cog.
00:22:10
That's it. I mean, it's not too
00:22:12
complicated, but I need to get all of
00:22:14
this brand new. But first, we need to
00:22:15
see if we can remove this line.
00:22:20
And everything is going to smell like
00:22:22
gone wrong barbecue.
00:22:28
Yep. I'm rounding it off. Perfect. Okay,
00:22:31
I'm going to cut this line.
00:22:39
[snorts] Oh, I'm an engineer with a G.
00:22:44
There he go.
00:22:47
That's out. Cool. This caliper is
00:22:50
definitely savable. While I'm waiting on
00:22:51
the parts for the brakes to arrive,
00:22:53
let's tackle the interior, namely the
00:22:55
rust. The carpet is now fully dry. I
00:22:58
used that massive heater and I also put
00:23:01
a few of these dehumidifier containers
00:23:03
as well as the machine. So, it's sucking
00:23:05
out all the moisture. Now, we're going
00:23:07
to remove this contraption here. This
00:23:10
was sitting in water. It's bound to have
00:23:11
some kindization. So, we need to inspect
00:23:13
it. And then we need to treat this rust
00:23:16
here. So, this is for the passages in
00:23:19
the back, the ventilation. Given how
00:23:21
much water we had here, it wouldn't be
00:23:23
surprising if this is put.
00:23:26
See? Yep, there you go. This connector
00:23:29
is corroded.
00:23:31
How about good sir?
00:23:34
Doesn't look too bad.
00:23:39
More water there. Yeah, it's all
00:23:41
corroded. First, I'm scraping off the
00:23:43
top layer of the rust.
00:23:55
>> [snorts]
00:23:56
>> And then sand blasting the rust away to
00:23:58
get the clean metal.
00:24:21
Well, that took a lot longer than I
00:24:23
expected, but I removed as much as I
00:24:25
could of the rust. It's not possible to
00:24:28
remove 100%. For that, we would need to
00:24:30
separate these two panels. This is a
00:24:32
structural part. The rust really isn't
00:24:34
that bad, so it's not necessary to do
00:24:36
that. But, I did get pretty far in, you
00:24:38
know, using various tools, sand blasting
00:24:40
and whatnot. So now we're going to use
00:24:42
Brunox epoxy rust converter and primer
00:24:44
two in one. Apply two to three layers.
00:24:46
Let it dry, then paint, then clear coat.
00:24:49
And finally, we're going to use cable
00:24:50
grease from Luke Molly. Spritz that all
00:24:52
over inside and stop any further rust
00:24:55
development if this area ever gets wet.
00:24:57
But as long as it's not soaking in water
00:24:59
again like that, this is not going to
00:25:01
rust further.
00:25:22
Let that dry and then we're going to do
00:25:24
bait.
00:25:26
Yeah, I grabbed the wrong can. This
00:25:28
one's black greenish. So, I let that dry
00:25:30
and then hit it with some gray paint.
00:25:34
>> [snorts]
00:25:39
>> And finally, clear coat.
00:25:46
Howdy. I want to show the Bentley what
00:25:48
will happen to it if it behaves, what's
00:25:51
to come. So, let me actually this works
00:25:54
quite well. That is a British car. This
00:25:56
is a British product except that's all
00:25:58
German underneath. But this is a British
00:26:01
product. So, coming in. Vix and Surface
00:26:03
Treatments Aqua Blast 1215 vapor
00:26:06
blasting cabinet
00:26:08
Bentley. Have a taste of this.
00:26:15
What did you say? You like it? Okay.
00:26:19
Me, too.
00:26:31
>> [laughter]
00:26:32
>> Ain't that beautiful? Here's the rebuild
00:26:34
kit for the Audi A8 D3 rear calipers.
00:26:37
Except it's the wrong one. I ordered a
00:26:39
full rebuild kit, and I was sent a wrong
00:26:41
one, not once, but twice. I ordered one
00:26:44
that comes with everything, including
00:26:46
these washers here, the needle bearings,
00:26:48
this bushing here. And I received a
00:26:50
basic kit that comes just with O-rings
00:26:52
and a piston. But at the end of the day,
00:26:54
this is what we need to get the car
00:26:55
running. So, we're going to rebuild it
00:26:56
with what we have. Also a refurbished
00:26:58
caliper from TRW for Audi is available.
00:27:01
€287 and it even comes with the EPB
00:27:04
motor. The only thing you'd have to do
00:27:06
is drill four holes here and add some
00:27:08
threads and then then you can mount this
00:27:10
cover. Otherwise, identical. So, you can
00:27:12
go down that route as well if you want.
00:27:14
The brake hose is Bentley specific, but
00:27:17
it's NLA. I ordered one for the Audi and
00:27:20
it's a little bit short, so it's not
00:27:21
going to work. Then I did some digging
00:27:23
and I found that E38
00:27:25
brake hose will work. It's just a tad
00:27:27
longer, but it'll fit just fine. First,
00:27:30
the O-ring.
00:27:36
Brake assembly paste from AT.
00:27:41
First, two washers and needle bearings
00:27:45
in the middle. Then the O-ring.
00:27:49
Mount the cog.
00:27:52
Pop this in. And I just hope that that
00:27:54
bushing will seal.
00:27:58
some assembly lube on the piston as
00:28:00
well.
00:28:06
Push the boot all the way down as first
00:28:08
we need to clip it into the caliper like
00:28:10
that. Can [snorts] mount the circlip.
00:28:13
Oh, guess I forgot to mention that I
00:28:14
also cleaned up the caliper in the Aqua
00:28:17
Blast.
00:28:21
This clip is a tight fit. I'm going to
00:28:23
pour some brake fluid in there just to
00:28:25
confirm it's no longer leaking. Forgot
00:28:28
about the hole on the side. But it looks
00:28:30
like the O-ring is holding up, which is
00:28:32
good.
00:28:35
Okay, that's confirmed. It's no longer
00:28:37
leaking here from the O-ring. Now we can
00:28:40
pop in the piston.
00:28:43
So, first clip it in in the back where
00:28:45
you can't see it and then the rest.
00:28:49
All right.
00:28:51
And that's fully clipped in. So, we can
00:28:54
push the piston in, or at least as far
00:28:56
as it'll go. Now, we should be able to
00:28:58
retract it.
00:29:02
So, make sure the boot is clipped in
00:29:05
nicely all around.
00:29:11
There you go. So, this is how the
00:29:14
handbrake should work now. So, if the
00:29:15
motor winds down this way, it'll push
00:29:18
the piston out. [snorts]
00:29:20
Can see it coming out. And then if it
00:29:23
winds back should release the tension.
00:29:27
We have an O-ring here.
00:29:31
Let's do the bleed screw.
00:29:34
[clears throat]
00:29:35
That's the caliper done. The EPB
00:29:38
electric parking brake is unfortunately
00:29:40
not available from TRW. You can only buy
00:29:42
Chinese replicas which are around €50 or
00:29:45
so. I did order one to inspect it and it
00:29:47
didn't arrive. So, I have to see if we
00:29:49
can get this one to work, at least for
00:29:51
now. But the housing is cracked and this
00:29:53
was soaked in brake fluid. So, let me
00:29:55
take it apart and see what's the state
00:29:57
of it on the inside. This is probably
00:29:59
glued together, isn't it? Yep. This
00:30:01
cover is plastic welded on. There's no
00:30:03
way to remove it. At least I don't see a
00:30:05
way to remove it without breaking it.
00:30:07
So, for now, we're going to leave it as
00:30:08
is. Just going to sprit some alcohol in
00:30:10
there, smush it around, and yeah, try
00:30:13
try to clean it.
00:30:16
You can see there's a belt inside
00:30:18
driving this motor.
00:30:21
Oh, this is better than Yeah, look at
00:30:22
that. Brake fluid.
00:30:29
This is a pretty neat system if you
00:30:31
think about it. It eliminates so much
00:30:33
hardware, parking brake, shoes, cables,
00:30:37
the whole contraption with the springs.
00:30:39
And as far as I've read, the system is
00:30:42
actually pretty robust. But yeah, this
00:30:45
can happen due to age and people not
00:30:47
changing brake fluid.
00:30:50
So because of the corrosion oxidation
00:30:52
that was happening here, the housing
00:30:54
expanded and cracked. Let's do brake
00:30:58
line.
00:31:04
A38 brake line. Get some BMW
00:31:06
reliability.
00:31:08
Nice. Let's mount the caliper and bleed
00:31:11
the brakes.
00:31:18
Top tip for all Bentley owners out
00:31:20
there. E387 series brake hose fits
00:31:23
perfectly.
00:31:24
It curves all around the wishbones. It's
00:31:26
not touching anything. It just kind of
00:31:29
swoops all around and then connects to
00:31:30
that line. €6 that brake hose and €25
00:31:34
for the rebuilt kit.
00:31:36
€31 to fix a brake leak. It's a Bentley
00:31:40
man. €250,000
00:31:42
brand new. And here we are fixing it for
00:31:45
peanuts. Spent more on my coffee beans
00:31:47
yesterday than I did in this.
00:31:52
With this installed, the Bentley is now
00:31:54
going to recognize this and say, "Hm,
00:31:57
he's treating me well. I'm going to be
00:31:59
good for him so he can treat the rest of
00:32:02
me well." Yeah, wishful thinking. Let's
00:32:04
add some brake fluid. Liquid Molly.4.
00:32:17
Happy to report that the caliper is no
00:32:20
longer leaking. So, let's bleed it. I'm
00:32:22
not going to bleed the system all around
00:32:24
cuz complete brakes need to be
00:32:26
refurbished. So, it would be a waste of
00:32:27
time to do it now cuz everything needs
00:32:29
to be taken apart. Just not now. Now, we
00:32:32
want to drive this thing.
00:32:37
A lot of air in there.
00:32:41
There it goes. I think that'll do it.
00:32:44
The fluid is coming out bubble free.
00:32:49
So, that's the brake fluid leak fixed
00:32:52
for €31
00:32:54
on a mentally.
00:32:58
>> [clears throat]
00:33:00
>> These wheels are positively ghly and
00:33:04
we're definitely going to change them if
00:33:05
we end up restoring this fine
00:33:07
automobile. There's rust here. That's
00:33:10
good.
00:33:12
After a few days, the rear right corner
00:33:14
goes down, which means that that air
00:33:16
shock is leaking. Great. I want to
00:33:19
quickly troubleshoot the airbag light.
00:33:21
Got a code for the front driver's crash
00:33:23
sensor. It's this thing here. Lives
00:33:25
underneath of this cover. I already
00:33:27
removed the bolts and this one looks
00:33:29
really crispy. So, this is one on the
00:33:31
passenger side. So, I'm thinking let's
00:33:32
unplug this one. Connect this one here.
00:33:35
And if the code goes away, then we know
00:33:37
that the sensor is the issue. If it
00:33:39
stays, then we have a problem with
00:33:41
wiring and or control module. I think
00:33:43
someone was already in here because the
00:33:45
bolts are different than on the other
00:33:46
side
00:33:48
and they're loose. Yep.
00:33:57
Cool. So, this one is actually cracked
00:33:59
here. That bolt is rusty and they're
00:34:02
different than on the other side. So,
00:34:04
hopefully this is the issue cuz this
00:34:07
will be cheap and easy to fix.
00:34:10
There we go. I bought a VCDS
00:34:14
cable, 300 European shillings, but it's
00:34:17
very easy and simple to set up and use.
00:34:20
I already tested it last night. So,
00:34:22
fault codes. Let's clear the codes.
00:34:25
Done. Yes, the code went away. It moved
00:34:28
to the passenger side, which means the
00:34:30
sensor is faulty. Cool. That's nice and
00:34:33
easy. I also use this tool to calibrate
00:34:35
the steering angle sensor. The traction
00:34:37
control light was on because of that.
00:34:39
And it went away. So, that's pretty
00:34:41
pretty neat. Let's get the sensor off.
00:34:44
This one is fully stripped.
00:34:47
And this one is coming out.
00:34:52
Great. I'm bending the whole thing. A sh
00:34:57
That's why no one changed it. This is
00:34:59
fully cooked. Let's dremel it off.
00:35:11
There we are. Really rusty in there.
00:35:16
So, this is what I want to break here.
00:35:18
The bracket.
00:35:21
Okay.
00:35:25
[snorts]
00:35:26
Nope. I'm going to have to cut it off
00:35:28
and then drill it out. Otherwise, I'm
00:35:30
going to ruin this bracket.
00:35:33
Well, it's a jolly molly Christmas.
00:35:41
There it is. That's why no one replaced
00:35:44
that before. Pain in the butt.
00:35:48
[snorts]
00:35:53
Wow. Even the threads are still good.
00:35:55
That's nice.
00:36:05
[snorts]
00:36:06
I forgot to press record, but I spray
00:36:07
painted that matte black. Clear coat.
00:36:09
The sensor didn't arrive yet, but I
00:36:11
spent a whopping 650. No, is €6. Let's
00:36:15
sort out the leaking CV axle boots.
00:36:22
Look at those brakes. Massive caliper,
00:36:24
massive rotor. All shot to bits. I don't
00:36:27
know if Billstein is aftermarket or if
00:36:30
this is original equipment. This says
00:36:32
2019, I think. So, these were replaced
00:36:35
in the front. Nice, man. The issue is
00:36:37
rather simple. Someone didn't install
00:36:39
this clamp properly and it came off. So,
00:36:41
the grease is coming out and just
00:36:44
spritzing everywhere. This one here is
00:36:46
fine. Didn't come off. So, we need to
00:36:48
clean this up. Maybe try and pump a bit
00:36:50
of grease inside of the boot and put a
00:36:52
new clamp. Let's remove the old clamp
00:36:55
first.
00:36:57
So, that's the clamp off. Now, I want to
00:36:59
see if we can open up the boot just a
00:37:02
little bit so I can stick my gun in
00:37:04
there and put a bit more grease cuz
00:37:07
obviously a bit of it came out.
00:37:11
Uhhuh. We can do that. Perfect.
00:37:16
So
00:37:20
think my bottle isn't got more pogrigio.
00:37:22
And this is penogrigia from liquid
00:37:25
molly. Highest quality only.
00:37:29
I think that's plenty. Now you got to
00:37:32
find a fitting clamp. It's too small.
00:37:34
This one surely.
00:37:37
Oh, perfect match. And this is an
00:37:40
original Waker clamp.
00:37:44
There we go.
00:37:47
Nice and tight.
00:37:49
Clamp that someone used on here before
00:37:51
wasn't genuine and it was too thin as
00:37:54
well. Right now I'm going to clean up
00:37:55
the area and then we'll monitor for
00:37:57
leaks.
00:38:01
Beautiful blue shocks. Nice and easy
00:38:04
fix. Free as well. I'm tired of holding
00:38:07
up the bonnet with a plank of wood. So,
00:38:09
I got hood shocks.
00:38:12
Placing hood shocks is the easiest thing
00:38:14
in the world. You just pull on the clip,
00:38:19
pull out the blown shock,
00:38:21
let it roll down the shop.
00:38:24
They come with new grease inside. So,
00:38:26
wipe off the old stuff.
00:38:32
Done. Sayanara to the plank of wood.
00:38:36
Much better.
00:38:40
Sorry. That's very smooth.
00:38:48
See, it has the second shock to kind of
00:38:51
slow it down and make it smooth when it
00:38:53
opens. I like that.
00:38:56
See?
00:38:58
Very cool.
00:39:01
got the upgraded part to fix the oil dip
00:39:04
from the UK and since UK is no longer
00:39:06
part of European Union I had to pay
00:39:08
import duties and tax this was €12 so
00:39:11
the tax was what 1 2 maybe €3 no it was
00:39:16
10 cuz that makes sense German customs
00:39:20
very good at taking your money let's get
00:39:22
my ghetto fix out
00:39:26
so the original part is made out of
00:39:28
plastic and when it breaks And the oil
00:39:30
dip is no longer sealing. You get
00:39:32
misfires. So this is the upgraded part
00:39:34
that I got from the UFK.
00:39:37
Does it just slide on? I need to smack
00:39:40
it on, I would imagine. So I'm going to
00:39:42
proceed. Operation smacky smackerson.
00:39:50
There it is fully seated. And as this is
00:39:53
brass, we will never have this issue
00:39:55
again. This is an aftermarket pipe.
00:39:57
That's why it's touching the oil
00:39:58
dipstick. And the dipstick now.
00:40:04
Oh, clicks into place. Take it out. Just
00:40:08
pull it out. That's a nice design for
00:40:11
€12. That's a nice nice upgrade. Lastly,
00:40:14
a genuine Volkswagen plug. This was
00:40:17
€1.75.
00:40:19
So, what we're going to do to stop
00:40:21
potential rust happening there on the
00:40:23
edges, I'm going to use cable grease
00:40:25
sofet from Liqually. Spritz it inside of
00:40:28
the grommet. Push it from below. And
00:40:30
that's going to stop water penetrating
00:40:32
that area and potentially having rust
00:40:34
there again.
00:40:37
Just like that. Now push this in from
00:40:40
below.
00:40:45
Like that. And actually we got to spray
00:40:48
some cable grease inside here. So
00:40:51
especially in here behind the leg where
00:40:54
we couldn't remove the rust.
00:40:58
It's exactly what you want to see
00:41:01
coming in between the metal.
00:41:04
That'll do it. We are ready to
00:41:07
reassemble the interior. It is fully
00:41:09
dry. First, I used a heater to dry the
00:41:11
carpet cuz it was soaking wet. And then
00:41:14
the entire time the dehumidifier was
00:41:15
running. I think I've been drying this
00:41:17
thing for about 2 weeks and it's fully
00:41:18
dry. No more water. Also had to replace
00:41:20
that bit of sanding over there because
00:41:22
the water destroyed the old one. It came
00:41:24
off. The rest is fixed. Let's start the
00:41:26
reassembly process. This is the air
00:41:28
distribution block that was swimming in
00:41:30
water. We have electrical stuff on here.
00:41:32
This connector is oxidized. There's rust
00:41:34
coming out of this box here. Rust coming
00:41:36
out of this hole. Obviously, it's not
00:41:38
going to be good. And I was planning on
00:41:40
opening this up, see if I can clean it,
00:41:42
see if I can save it. But I'm not going
00:41:44
to bother doing that because I bought a
00:41:46
replacement used part. Now, this is an
00:41:49
electrical box that is a Bentley that
00:41:51
cost €235,000 back in the day. So, what
00:41:55
do you think? How much does this
00:41:56
contraption cost?
00:41:58
€500? That would be reasonable for an
00:42:00
expensive car like that. Well, it's not
00:42:03
€300, €200,
00:42:06
€100.
00:42:08
Surely at least 50. Nope. Paid €20 ship
00:42:12
for this thing because it's the exact
00:42:14
same part that VW Faton uses. Exact same
00:42:17
part number down to the letter. So, I'm
00:42:19
just not going to waste any time on that
00:42:21
old part. This is good. doesn't have any
00:42:23
oxidation corrosion. It's just gonna
00:42:25
work. And I really like this so far
00:42:27
because everything underneath of this
00:42:29
car is Volkswagen. I know there will be
00:42:31
some Bentley specific parts, but so far
00:42:34
cheap. Fixing this car cheap.
00:42:38
So, the original connectors were all
00:42:40
corroded. The replacement part came with
00:42:43
connectors, so I soldered those in. So,
00:42:45
we don't have to worry about that
00:42:46
either.
00:42:52
That's the interior back together. It
00:42:54
needs to be taken apart completely and
00:42:56
thoroughly cleaned because of the mold.
00:42:58
But for now, to make it safe and to be
00:43:00
able to drive, we are going to run an
00:43:02
ozone generator for about 2 hours. This
00:43:05
will kill all bacteria that currently
00:43:07
reside in the Bentley. There it goes.
00:43:09
Now, we're going to attempt to drive the
00:43:10
Bentley for the first time. I'm going to
00:43:12
pull it outside, let it run while I set
00:43:15
up all of the cameras, and if it doesn't
00:43:17
turn off, then we're going to set off on
00:43:19
the maiden voyage. If it turns off,
00:43:22
well, then it turns off.
00:43:38
Right, it's been running well over 20
00:43:40
minutes, so I think the attempt is on. I
00:43:43
just got a scribble in my little diary
00:43:45
here. 2:40 p.m.
00:43:52
Smells like cheap perfume. [snorts]
00:43:55
I need to wipe that off. Disgusting. Gon
00:43:58
purify maintain. Disgusting, bro. And
00:44:02
I'm thinking the steering wheel as well.
00:44:03
We have to clean that. Yeah. And the
00:44:06
shift knob.
00:44:08
Okay, now we can go. This car was never
00:44:11
smoked in. Look at this. Well, you
00:44:13
probably can't see it cuz it's too dark,
00:44:14
but this cigarette lighter was never
00:44:16
used. I think first we're going to drive
00:44:18
it around the block just to see if it'll
00:44:20
stay running. And if yes, then we're
00:44:22
going to hit the gas station. Look at me
00:44:24
rolling in my Bentley. Steering is very
00:44:27
light. The mirrors are super small.
00:44:33
Officially on the row of my Bentley. I
00:44:35
have a triangle. I have I think I have
00:44:37
the tow hook and I have the safety vest
00:44:40
in case we break down. And also I'm
00:44:42
wearing a green hoodie to match the
00:44:44
color of the Bentley for good luck. Oo,
00:44:48
knocking in the front left. That's that
00:44:50
stuff that we found earlier.
00:44:58
Thought it turned off a second there.
00:45:00
It's running so smooth. All right, let's
00:45:02
go get fuel.
00:45:10
Transmission shifts fine. It's actually
00:45:12
really smooth. I'm floating. This is
00:45:14
nice. Six-speed ZF automatic
00:45:17
transmission.
00:45:19
Let's try the brakes. Ooh.
00:45:25
Oh, it sounds good. Sounds good.
00:45:30
Feels like the front windows are tinted
00:45:32
and the rear ones aren't. Are they?
00:45:36
They are.
00:45:39
Need to remove the tint. That's
00:45:41
illegal in Germany.
00:45:48
Oh, I like this engine. It's very
00:45:50
important. Take the curve, hit the apex,
00:45:54
end up in a bush
00:45:56
cuz the tires are old.
00:46:04
You know what? That engine pulls great.
00:46:06
It actually drives really, really
00:46:09
smooth. All right, time to get some fuel
00:46:10
and then Oh, the brakes are not good.
00:46:13
The brakes are really, really not good.
00:46:18
Aha.
00:46:20
What does it say? Whoa. We are
00:46:23
overheating. Overheating. Overheating.
00:46:25
Overheating. No.
00:46:31
Oh,
00:46:33
that's not good at all. Oh, we're
00:46:35
steaming. [bell]
00:46:37
We are steaming, man. Oh, no.
00:46:44
Yeah, that's uh
00:46:47
that's great. That's that's good. I'll
00:46:51
bet you anything this isn't the first
00:46:53
time that this happened. Just as it
00:46:54
started going well, it turned around and
00:46:57
went horribly wrong. This vehicle has an
00:46:59
underlying issue that was undisclosed
00:47:01
and we just learned about it by actually
00:47:03
test driving the car. Stay on your toes
00:47:05
for the next episode where we
00:47:07
troubleshoot further and decide the fate
00:47:09
of this car. Is it actually worth fixing
00:47:11
or not? Thank you so much for watching.
00:47:13
Happy New Year and I'll see you in 2026.
00:47:16
Keep running cool, unlike Bentley.
