good ride to all you students out there

university of alabama and one of the uca

instructors when he found out my name

like at fixate it's one of my favorite

passages and i was like

i'm a christian my name is micah but i

have no clue what that is

and uh he told me and he kind of made me

memorize it so i'm there at camp and

which is not a christian camp at all but

he wanted me to memorize that and i

learned it and over the years you know

i've kind of grabbed on to it and i'm

going to share that with you in kind of

the context of what that actually means

but this is the passage it says the lord

has told you human what is good

he has told you what he wants from you

to do what is right to other people to

love being kind to others

and to live humbly

obeying your god

now when he was telling the israelites

this was like an agreement so it's like

hey if you do this i do that the guy was

saying look if you will uphold these

and i'm your only god then i'm going to

put my hand a protection on you i'm

you from other things and then we see

throughout the old testament

they get away from that right and bad

things happen to them and then they get

back in good graces with god and they go

back again it's this cycle over and over

and this is one of those times when

far from god and they've been conquered

you know you love mercy

they're all about mercies for the weak

but god and as christians we're supposed

to love mercy we're supposed to show

mercy god has shown us mercy

and we too are supposed to pass that on

and show mercy to others

and then to walk humbly with god that

just means you know what you're trying

to live

like god wants you to live you're just

being obedient to him and god says you

if you're living that way then i'm gonna

what that's what jesus wants if we're

okay so let's get to this baptism thing

now i just want to go over this because

i want everybody to to understand

baptism

baptism does not save you okay

just because you say i want to get

baptized and i get dunked under water

doesn't mean you're automatically going

to heaven okay what baptism is it's a

symbol

it is you saying i want to

00:11:43

symbolize i want to tell others that i

00:11:46

have decided to follow jesus

00:11:49

and this is my public profession of

faith now now jesus he doesn't demand it

he doesn't say you have to be baptized

in order to you know get to heaven one

00:11:57

day but he does say i want you to be

00:11:59

baptized i want you as an act of

00:12:01

obedience to do that because it's

00:12:03

symbolic and if you think about what

00:12:05

baptism is it's going under water and

00:12:08

coming back up and you think what does

00:12:10

water do hopefully we all take baths and

00:12:12

showers

00:12:14

so we think of water as a cleansing okay

00:12:16

it cleanses you so a lot of times if

00:12:18

you're dirty water will cleanse that and

00:12:21

then if you think about going underwater

00:12:23

now some people baptize different ways

00:12:26

but but as a baptist i believe in the

00:12:28

submersion going underwater and that's a

00:12:31

symbol of how jesus died right when he

00:12:34

died he was buried

00:12:36

and then when he came back he raised

00:12:38

from the dead so that's kind of a symbol

00:12:40

of the baptism it's you dying to

00:12:43

yourself you dying to the old way

00:12:45

your old self is gone you're you're

00:12:48

being buried and then when you come back

00:12:50

you are now a new it says you're a new

00:12:52

creation you are a new

00:12:54

person because you are now a follower of

00:12:56

christ and god's got a new plan and a

00:12:59

new purpose for you

so i just want you to understand it is

simply a symbol

right

it's a great symbol and i i encourage

everyone to do it if you claim to be a

follower of christ

but just because you're baptized does

not make you saved okay i just want to

make sure everybody's clear on that

um i know today we have several i want

to be baptized my actually my middle my

youngest they've never been baptized

they've wanted to and we've talked about

and uh so they're gonna do that today as

well my niece callie is gonna get

baptized as well and then we have

kind of do it one at a time

first question i ask is

is jesus christ the lord of your life

say yes if that's the case okay if not
