00:00:00
Now, Rosas Yarlov is a conservative
00:00:02
member of Denmark's parliament and chair
00:00:04
of its defense committee. Thanks so much
00:00:06
for joining.
00:00:08
>> Hello, Jim. Thank you.
00:00:10
>> So, first I I'd like your reaction to
00:00:13
seeing Denmark, a NATO treaty ally,
00:00:16
looking across the Atlantic at the US
00:00:18
and seeing a potential threat. We
00:00:21
participated in all the major uh US-led
00:00:25
wars in Korea, in the in the Gulf, and
00:00:29
many other places in Afghanistan, Iraq,
00:00:31
and so on. So, it's it's um it's not
00:00:35
great that now we're um receiving
00:00:37
threats uh regarding Greenland, which is
00:00:39
the main concern from a Danish point of
00:00:42
of view. >> Well, you've only gone and done it,
00:00:44
Donald. The United States of America,
00:00:45
long seen as the world's defender of
00:00:48
freedom, is now being called a military
00:00:51
threat by its own allies under Donald
00:00:55
Trump's leadership to the point that one
00:00:57
of the United States's closest allies
00:00:59
has now stopped sharing intelligence
00:01:01
because of the way that the US is
00:01:03
handling foreign policy.
00:01:05
>> And it's it's questionable at at best.
00:01:09
Our one of our biggest allies, the
00:01:10
United Kingdom, recently stopped sharing
00:01:12
intelligence with us in the Caribbean
00:01:15
because uh they question whether this is
00:01:18
legal or not. Um we've been asking for
00:01:21
more briefings from the right people. We
00:01:24
have not received them, but the
00:01:27
information that you just shared with me
00:01:29
is the is the public information. I
00:01:30
don't have much more beyond that.
00:01:32
>> Well, and the French government has said
00:01:33
it's a violation of international law
00:01:35
and the law of the sea. That's what our
00:01:37
our allies are saying about those um
00:01:39
>> strikes that are happening now.
00:01:41
>> Now, let's talk about this. The US's
00:01:43
closest allies, countries that have
00:01:45
fought wars side by side, traded
00:01:47
secrets, shared intelligence with since
00:01:50
World War II, are now openly questioning
00:01:53
whether the United States is the threat,
00:01:55
not the protector. Earlier this week,
00:01:58
the Danish Defense Intelligence Service,
00:02:00
Denmark's top spy agency, dropped a
00:02:03
bombshell. In its annual security
00:02:05
report, they didn't just list Russia and
00:02:08
China as threats. They said the United
00:02:10
States itself is now seen as using its
00:02:13
military and economic power in ways that
00:02:16
create security concerns for other
00:02:19
nations, most notably including US
00:02:21
allies. We have some news right now.
00:02:23
Denmark officially says the United
00:02:25
States is national security risk, the
00:02:27
first ally of the United States to
00:02:29
classify us as a national security risk
00:02:32
to them. This report was released by the
00:02:34
Danish intelligence service and said
00:02:36
that the world's great powers are quote
00:02:38
increasingly prioritizing their own
00:02:40
interests and use force to achieve their
00:02:43
goals. And the report for the first time
00:02:45
named the United States as because of
00:02:47
quote uncertainty about the role of the
00:02:50
United States as a guarantor of European
00:02:52
security. The United States uses
00:02:54
economic power, including in the form of
00:02:56
threats of high tariffs, to enforce its
00:02:58
will and no longer excludes the use of
00:03:00
military force even against allies. And
00:03:02
now the United States is officially
00:03:04
classified as a security threat to
00:03:06
Denmark. Remember, there's been the
00:03:08
whole back and forth over Greenland and
00:03:10
Greenland's future. No one's really
00:03:11
talking about that anymore. But this is
00:03:13
a pretty significant development.
00:03:15
>> Think about that for a second, right?
00:03:16
Denmark, whose national security has
00:03:19
long relied on NATO and the United
00:03:21
States, said that the US might actually
00:03:23
be part of the problem. Now, don't get
00:03:26
it twisted. This is a direct result of
00:03:27
the Trump administration's aggressive
00:03:29
foreign policy narrative, from trade
00:03:31
sanctions to military buildup to
00:03:34
threatening to annex Greenland. And now,
00:03:36
allies increasingly view the United
00:03:39
States not just as disruptive, but
00:03:41
unstable. At least on paper, the US and
00:03:45
Denmark remain treaty allies. They're
00:03:48
both members of NATO, but now you have
00:03:52
Denmark looking to the US as a potential
00:03:54
threat. Can those two things
00:03:57
be true at the same time? Or is the
00:04:00
reality that that alliance doesn't truly
00:04:04
exist anymore?
00:04:07
>> No, let let's not take it that far. I
00:04:09
mean, we we have NATO and we have not
00:04:11
heard the Americans not wanting to be
00:04:13
part of NATO or not wanting to honor the
00:04:16
NATO oath. So, let's not take it as far
00:04:18
as saying that we don't have NATO
00:04:20
anymore and not allies. We are allies.
00:04:22
We are in NATO together and we have
00:04:23
sworn an oath to fight for each other if
00:04:26
that should be necessary. We already did
00:04:28
it in Afghanistan when the United States
00:04:30
invoked the NATO article 5 as the only
00:04:32
country in in NATO's history. So we
00:04:33
already went there and fought for for
00:04:35
the Americans and the Americans
00:04:37
definitely fought for us in the Second
00:04:38
World War. So we I think we owe each
00:04:40
other um some gratitude. I think we owe
00:04:43
the Americans more gratitude than the
00:04:45
other way around and and and we
00:04:46
understand that. We also understand the
00:04:48
Americans are tired of paying too much
00:04:50
money to protect Europe. That's fair
00:04:52
enough. Um, but it shouldn't develop
00:04:54
into um, animosity and belittling each
00:04:58
other and talking about how Europeans
00:05:00
want to end freedom of speech and other
00:05:03
things that are being said at the moment
00:05:04
that simply are not true. We share the
00:05:06
same values. We should be allies. It
00:05:08
would, it's much better for both Europe
00:05:09
and the United States. I mean, just last
00:05:11
month, the United Kingdom, the US's
00:05:13
closest intelligence partner since World
00:05:15
War II, dating back to the UKUSA
00:05:18
Intelligence Alliance, has temporarily
00:05:21
stopped providing certain intelligence
00:05:24
to the United States over concerns tied
00:05:26
to the US military actions connected to
00:05:29
Venezuela.
00:05:30
>> A breaking news exclusive now coming
00:05:32
into the situation and watch this. The
00:05:35
United Kingdom is suspending, listen to
00:05:37
this, suspending some of its
00:05:39
intelligence sharing with the US because
00:05:41
of the Trump administration's strikes
00:05:43
against alleged drug boats in the
00:05:45
Caribbean.
00:05:46
>> We are joined now by senior White House
00:05:48
reporter Kevin Liptac and CNN national
00:05:51
security correspondent Natasha Bertrren.
00:05:52
Natasha, to you first with this
00:05:54
exclusive reporting. I mean, this is a
00:05:56
big deal. The UK is arguably the closest
00:05:59
ally to the United States when it comes
00:06:01
to intelligence sharing. What else do we
00:06:02
know?
00:06:05
Yeah, Pam, it's a really significant
00:06:07
rupture here. Essentially, what we're
00:06:09
learning is that the UK is no longer
00:06:10
sharing intelligence with the US about
00:06:12
these suspected drug drug trafficking
00:06:14
vessels in the Caribbean because it does
00:06:17
not want to be complicit in the US
00:06:18
military's strikes on these drug vessels
00:06:21
and believes fundamentally that the US
00:06:23
military's use of force against these
00:06:25
vessels violates international law,
00:06:28
according to multiple sources that we
00:06:30
spoke to. Previously, the UK had been
00:06:32
happy uh to help the United States uh
00:06:35
locate and interdict vessels that were
00:06:38
transiting the Caribbean that appeared
00:06:40
to be trafficking drugs. But the key
00:06:42
difference, of course, is that it was
00:06:44
helping the Coast Guard intercept those
00:06:46
vessels, arrest those on board, seize
00:06:48
the drugs, and allowing these
00:06:49
individuals to have some semblance of
00:06:51
due process. But now the US of course
00:06:54
has started striking these boats uh
00:06:57
unilaterally with military force killing
00:06:59
everyone on board. The total now for
00:07:01
number of people killed is around 76.
00:07:04
And we're told that the UK is deeply
00:07:06
uncomfortable with that and they believe
00:07:08
that it is uh pretty blatantly illegal.
00:07:11
I mean let's break that one down. What?
00:07:14
For decades, the US and UK have shared
00:07:17
intelligence on, you know, everything
00:07:20
from nuclear programs to terrorism to
00:07:23
cyber threats. Both countries are
00:07:25
considered the backbone of what's called
00:07:27
the Five Eyes Alliance, the most
00:07:29
intimate intelligence sharing
00:07:30
arrangement on on planet Earth. But
00:07:33
recently, Britain reportedly paused
00:07:36
sharing intelligence regarding the
00:07:38
suspected drug trafficking vessels in
00:07:40
the Caribbean because, well, they didn't
00:07:42
want to be complicit in the US military
00:07:45
strikes on these boats, I mean, these
00:07:46
are strikes executed without clear
00:07:48
international law justification. And and
00:07:51
while British officials believe could be
00:07:53
illegal, and they're not alone. I mean,
00:07:55
even Republicans are saying that these
00:07:57
attacks could be illegal and actually
00:07:59
could be war crimes. And this is
00:08:01
regarding the military campaign in and
00:08:03
around Venezuela's waters, claiming to
00:08:05
combat drug trafficking and pressuring
00:08:08
Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro, a
00:08:10
strategy that includes strikes on
00:08:12
vessels and increased US naval presence.
00:08:16
We all seen this video recently, but the
00:08:18
attacks have been deemed so dodgy, as we
00:08:20
say in Scotland, that it's merited
00:08:22
bipartisan scrutiny and calls for
00:08:24
investigations into possible war crimes.
00:08:28
I want to ask you about what's going on
00:08:29
in the Caribbean, Senator Ran Paul, and
00:08:31
specifically when it comes to Venezuela,
00:08:33
and you've been outspoken about this.
00:08:35
You commented around fears of
00:08:37
extrajudicial killings following the
00:08:38
first vote we've now had four. Uh your
00:08:41
concern about the president's actions
00:08:44
here. Is he looking for regime change in
00:08:46
Venezuela?
00:08:48
>> You know, I don't know. But we did
00:08:50
discover today that the Coast Guard when
00:08:52
they interdict boats, it's a common
00:08:53
thing off the coast of Miami and
00:08:55
California. About 25% of the time the
00:08:58
boat that they board doesn't have drugs
00:09:00
on it. So they have made an error but
00:09:03
they don't kill them. But we've blown up
00:09:05
four boats now. And if the percentages
00:09:07
hold true, did one of those four boats
00:09:10
not have drug dealers on it? If they all
00:09:12
had drug dealers on it, you know, the
00:09:14
first 11 they killed, what were their
00:09:15
names? uh what was the evidence linking
00:09:19
them to being part of a uh gang. So I
00:09:22
think there's a lot of unknowns here and
00:09:24
I don't think you can have a universal
00:09:26
coast guard policy of just blowing up
00:09:28
boats before they're interdicted.
00:09:31
There's, you know, decadesl long history
00:09:33
of how we board boats. We say halt,
00:09:36
stop, we will board your boat. If they
00:09:38
don't halt and stop, there's an
00:09:39
escalation of use of force. But we don't
00:09:42
just blow ships up. So those operations
00:09:45
have raised serious legal and diplomatic
00:09:48
questions for allies like the UK,
00:09:50
France, and the Netherlands. So much so
00:09:52
that well, the UK is limiting what
00:09:54
intelligence they share. Worried it
00:09:56
might end up being used to support
00:09:58
strikes that could violate international
00:10:01
norms. But let's be clear, disagreements
00:10:03
among allies over strategy, these things
00:10:06
are not new. But intelligence sharing
00:10:08
isn't just data. It's trust, right? It's
00:10:10
saying, "Hey, here's our most sensitive
00:10:13
stuff. we believe that you'll use it in
00:10:15
the right way. I mean, cutting that off
00:10:17
even partially is a significant decision
00:10:20
and it shows the rupture here, right?
00:10:22
Denmark's report didn't just mention the
00:10:24
United States. It explicitly pointed to
00:10:26
the way that the US employs its economic
00:10:29
and military power as a source of
00:10:31
uncertainty in global security. And now
00:10:34
Britain as well effectively saying, "We
00:10:36
need to think twice before helping you
00:10:38
play judge, jury, and executioner in
00:10:41
international waters." It's all
00:10:43
indicative of an administration that's
00:10:45
out of control. So what happens next
00:10:48
when allies start to hesitate before
00:10:51
sharing intelligence? Well, it doesn't
00:10:53
just impact how the US fights cartels.
00:10:56
It affects how the United States as a
00:10:58
whole detect and respond to terrorist
00:11:00
threats, counter cyber attacks, and
00:11:02
espionage. Which is ironic, right?
00:11:05
Because all of all of it means that the
00:11:07
United States, for all the strength that
00:11:09
Trump projects, is actually weaker under
00:11:12
his leadership. Because diplomacy and
00:11:14
defense aren't just about military
00:11:16
might, they are also about
00:11:19
relationships. And here's the
00:11:20
uncomfortable truth. For the first time
00:11:22
in generations, the United States isn't
00:11:24
just disagreed with on the global stage.
00:11:26
It's being classified as a potential
00:11:29
security threat by allies. That's not
00:11:31
leadership through strength. That is a
00:11:33
major cause for concern.
