States has always been messy but for the00:03:50
sake of this video we're just going to00:03:51
look at World War II onwards during the00:03:53
beginning of World War II the majority00:03:55
of the Philippines were captured by the00:03:57
Japanese military as soon as the00:03:59
Imperial military had taken over the00:04:01
Philippines they began to use its people00:04:03
and resources for the war effort and not00:04:06
only did the people of the Philippines00:04:07
have things like their food and Farms00:04:09
stolen by the Japanese but in some cases00:04:12
the military would even begin to steal00:04:14
their women and children so as you can00:04:16
imagine several of the Philippine people00:04:17
began to fight back the primary group of00:04:20
Philippine Freedom Fighters were known00:04:22
as the huk balahop the hukbalahop also00:04:25
known as the Huck Rebellion is an00:04:27
acronym that translates to the People's00:04:30
anti-japanese Army during the war the00:04:33
Americans would use the help of the hux00:04:34
in order to destroy the Japanese00:04:36
holdouts that were within the00:04:38
Philippines and as the Japanese began to00:04:40
clear out of the region the Americans00:04:42
would begin to enlist the help of00:04:44
Filipino business this man and elected00:04:46
leaders however this is where the00:04:48
problems begin so during the beginning00:04:51
of World War II before America got00:04:53
involved and Japan was taking over the00:04:56
Philippine Islands several of the00:04:58
businessmen and politicians tried to00:05:00
earn the favor of the Japanese so that00:05:03
they would have a more favorable outcome00:05:05
as the war progressed so in the first00:05:07
years of the war several of these00:05:09
leaders and landlords had Allied00:05:10
themselves to the Japanese and would not00:05:13
only feed and house them but give them00:05:15
advice about fighting their own people00:05:18
who were in The People's anti-japanese00:05:20
Army so at the end of the war whenever00:05:23
the U.S government was trying to00:05:24
reinstitute the Filipino government and00:05:27
they did it using the pre-existing00:05:29
leaders of the Philippines that doesn't00:05:32
go over well with the people who have00:05:34
been fighting them for the past four00:05:35
years as you could imagine because00:05:37
several of these leaders had helped the00:05:39
Japanese destroy their country and then00:05:41
America comes in and says yeah these00:05:43
guys are still in charge and while00:05:44
tension were high there was no direct00:05:46
violence at least until 1946 when the00:05:49
leader of the PKM a group that the hux00:05:52
were Allied to was murdered then they00:05:56
decided to get violent again they00:05:58
changed their name from The People's00:05:59
anti-japanese Army to the people's00:06:01
Liberation Army but still went by the00:06:03
name of Huck and as America was trying00:06:05
to make a new government for the00:06:06
Philippines the hux would smuggle00:06:08
weapons into the Mountainside and begin00:06:10
to grow local resistance it also didn't00:06:13
help the government's case that these00:06:15
local leaders who had previously had to00:06:18
do things under the watchful eye of the00:06:21
Japanese military were now pretty much00:06:23
given free reign by the Americans so as00:06:26
soon as these leaders got power they00:06:28
began to take a bunch of the food and00:06:30
resources from Farmers and essentially00:06:33
just be a jerk to the peasant class that00:06:36
they didn't care for which helped to00:06:38
increase support for the opposing Huck00:06:39
rebellion and by 1949 it's estimated00:06:42
that the hugs had anywhere from 1100:06:44
thousand to fifteen thousand active00:06:47

Communist and because of that the hugs00:07:22
have gone down in history as a communist00:07:24
Fighters group and while the Hucks were00:07:27
allies with the pkp who was a group of00:07:30
Fighters who were a part of the Soviet00:07:32
Union all of the Huck Fighters were like00:07:34
farmers who just didn't like having00:07:37
their stuff stolen so while you could00:07:40
maybe argue that kind of was in line00:07:42
with some of the beliefs they just00:07:44
didn't want to get put pushed around so00:07:45
calling them a Soviet Union military00:07:49
organization is exaggeration at best I00:07:53

against the government and while there00:08:01
were certainly elements of that by 194900:08:04
the movement had become large enough00:08:06
that people would claim the name of the00:08:08
Huck Rebellion so that they could get00:08:10
away with things like murder and robbery00:08:12
so while there definitely was a good00:08:15
cause at least in the beginning by 194900:08:18
1950 the hugs were seen as a bunch of00:08:21
rampant pillagers at least around00:08:23
heavily populated areas in the00:08:25
Mountainside where the original Huck00:08:27
Rebels were there was more of a00:08:29
Grassroots movement to help them but00:08:31
that dissonance can't last long00:08:33
government is not being good to its00:08:35
people and some of the people are acting00:08:37
a fool now did the United States00:08:39
government care about this00:08:40
no they were concerned with the Russian00:08:43
threat and everything they did was to00:08:45
advance that end as we're going to see00:08:47
so if America is going to have a00:08:50
position of power in the Philippines00:08:51
which is a very strategic location for00:08:54
anything in Southeast Asia then they're00:08:56
going to have to deal with this local00:08:57
infighting so in 1950 the Pentagon sent00:09:01
one of their best men to the Philippines00:09:03
Lieutenant Colonel Edward Lansdale now00:09:06
if you're weird like I am and into crazy00:09:09
cold war psyop stuff Lansdale is a very00:09:12
familiar name he wrote the book for what00:09:14
would become the majority of psyop00:09:16
tactics from Vietnam forward he's also00:09:19
very instrumental in a lot of special00:09:21
forces training and tactics and00:09:24
Adventures that they would go on later00:09:26
and he was actually one of the founding00:09:28
members of the CIA before World War II00:09:30
when he would join the military Lansdale00:09:33
was an advertising executive in San00:09:35
Francisco from that job he developed00:09:37
knowledge as to how people's minds work00:09:39
and how to convince them of what you00:09:41
want them to think so whenever he joined00:09:43
the military during World War II he was00:09:45
sent to the operation of strategic00:09:47
services or the OSS which after the war00:09:51
the members of it created the Central00:09:53
Intelligence Agency or the CIA so00:09:56
Lansdale one of the first ever CIA00:09:57
agents gets to the Philippines in 195000:10:00
and creates something called the Civil00:10:02
Affairs office the Civil Affairs office00:10:05
was a means for Lansdale to communicate00:10:07
with Filipino leaders of how they can00:10:09
best destroy the Filipino Rebellion as00:10:13
an expert in psychological warfare00:10:14
Lansdale said that the best way to00:10:17
convince a people of what you want them00:10:19
to think is by using their own truths00:10:21
and ideas against them so after00:10:24
analyzing the situation and speaking00:10:25
with other leaders Lansdale determined00:10:28
that the majority of Filipino people00:10:30
were very superstitious and had a lot of00:10:33
religious beliefs tied to local00:10:35
tradition so he decided that that is how00:10:38
he's going to get him the first of these00:10:40
operations were went as follows on a00:10:42
cloudy day he had someone fly a small00:10:45
airplane with a very large speaker00:10:47
attached to it this airplane flew over00:10:49
the Philippine Countryside where it was00:10:52
believed that several of the locals were00:10:54
aiding and embedding Huck Rebels and00:10:56
from this large speaker flying through00:10:58
the clouds played several curses in the00:11:02
Local's native language these messages00:11:04
said that any collaborators who are00:11:06
helping the local Rebels will have their00:11:09
family cursed and all of their00:11:11
belongings destroyed if they continue to00:11:13
Aid them and it seems that this worked00:11:15
as in the following weeks several groups00:11:18
of Huck Rebels turned themselves into00:11:20
the authorities because they were00:11:22
starving see typically with these00:11:23
Guerrilla factions they have to rely on00:11:25
the Goodwill of others and create this00:11:28
underground network of supplies and00:11:30
shelter in order to sustain themselves00:11:32
but now that these people were afraid of00:11:34
a curse and kicked them out they had no00:11:36
other option but to turn themselves in00:11:38
or starve to death so seeing that this00:11:40
was working Lansdale Double Down00:11:42
Lansdale had several men embedded into00:11:44
the local population in order to give00:11:47
him information as to where the hooks00:11:49
were or what they were doing so using00:11:51
this information Lansdale began to get00:11:53
data on which specific houses were00:11:55
aiding the rebels then under the cover00:11:57
of night his agents would go out next to00:12:00
these houses and spray paint these large00:12:03
watching eyes on the streets around00:12:06
these houses so imagine that you are a00:12:10
local person who is invading a group of00:12:12
rebels and while you're supportive to00:12:14
their cause you also have yourself and00:12:15
your family to look out for and then one00:12:17
day you go to bed and when you wake up00:12:19
there are eyes painted all around your00:12:22
house would probably make you think00:12:24
twice about helping these guys out so00:12:26
because of this collaborators became00:12:28
more few and far between and the Huck00:12:31
Rebels had to more so rely on their own00:12:33
resources and now that we've set the00:12:35
stage for all that let's talk about the00:12:37
vampires now the term vampire is a bit00:12:39
of an oversimplification education of00:12:41
what actually happened the Filipino00:12:43
people have a legend of a creature known00:12:46
as an Aswang oswang itself is kind of an00:12:49
overarching term that can embody ideas00:12:52
from witchcraft to zombie-like risen00:12:56
dead people to demonic spirits or what00:12:59
have you but the commonality seen00:13:01
throughout oswang belief is that they00:13:03
are a blood-sucking creature who drains00:13:06
the blood of their victims most often00:13:08
through a long tongue that shoots out00:13:10
and stabs people kind of like a mosquito00:13:12
so Lansdale having seen that flying a00:13:15
plane and pretending to be God worked00:13:17
maybe they should try the vampire thing00:13:19
specifically there was a Mountaintop in00:13:21
Central Luzon that was a strategic00:13:23
control point for the Huck Rebels and00:13:26
Lansdale decided to literally scare them00:13:28
out so he had a couple of his men go to00:13:30
The Villages around the mountain and00:13:32
begin talking of how they saw in a Swang00:13:35
on the mountain nights prior sure enough00:13:38
other Rebels said that within the day00:13:39
people in the Town began to tell stories00:13:42
of how there's a Swang or demonic00:13:44
creature draining the blood of people in00:13:47
the forest around the mountain so00:13:48
Lansdale waited a couple days at which00:13:50
point he was sure that the information00:13:52
got back to the Huck Rebels directly and00:13:54
then decided to send a group to attack00:13:56
so a couple nights after this story's00:13:58
been floating around there is a group of00:14:00
Huck Rebels on top of the mountain doing00:14:03
a patrol around the trails along the top00:14:06
of the mountain itself and as they're00:14:08
patrolling this group of Hitmen sneak up00:14:10
on them whenever the patrol has their00:14:12
guard down they grab the guy in the back00:14:15
of the patrol and drag him into the00:14:17
bushes once they've got a hold of him00:14:19
they kill him and take two small00:14:22
puncturing devices I'm not sure if it00:14:25
was like a screwdriver or what but they00:14:28
put two holes into his neck and hung him00:14:30
upside down to drain all the blood from00:14:33
his body then once that's done they00:14:35
threw his body back onto the trail where00:14:37
he went missing so that whenever his00:14:40
guys come looking for him they find his00:14:42
body drained of blood with two puncture00:14:44
holes in the neck so yes with no00:14:46
exaggeration straight from their own00:14:47
admittance and Declassified records the00:14:50
CIA staged a vampire attack on this00:14:53
random Filipino freedom fighter and00:14:56
perhaps even more surprisingly it worked00:14:59
the next day the entire Rebel Force00:15:02
cleared off of the mountain now is this00:15:04
because they thought that an Aswang was00:15:07
attacking them and may kill their entire00:15:09
Camp possibly but also like if I was00:15:13
with a group of friends and we were00:15:16
camping on a mountain and we thought00:15:19
that one of us had been killed by a00:15:21
vampire we would probably leave but if I00:15:24
was with a group of friends on top of00:15:25
the mountain and we thought that some00:15:28
random dude killed our friend and staged00:15:31
it to look like a vampire00:15:33
we would also probably leave and yeah it00:15:36
can be safely assumed that at least some00:15:38
people thought it was an oswang at the00:15:40
same time a lot of people probably00:15:42
thought that it was the CIA killing them00:15:44
and draining their blood which is also a00:15:46
pretty good reason to get out of there00:15:48

continued in the Philippines for some00:15:52
time to come and while Everyone likes to00:15:54
remember the flying plane threatening00:15:57
curses that people and the giant eyes00:15:59

operations that had the same if not00:16:05
greater effect for example Lansdale00:16:07
began a radio show that people in the00:16:10
mountains for the first time could hear00:16:11
directly from their leaders how they're00:16:13
trying to rebuild the country Lansdale00:16:16
made sure that government officials were00:16:17
no longer being abusive to the locals00:16:19
which again if the locals feel like00:16:22
they're not being oppressed they don't00:16:24
really have the need to support a group00:16:26
of Freedom Fighters and several00:16:28
government leaders would dress up and00:16:30
pretend to be Huck Rebels and go through00:16:32
Villages stealing food and yelling at00:16:34
people so as villagers began to think00:16:37
that the government was beginning to00:16:39
have their best interests and be00:16:40
supportive while the Hucks were00:16:43
murdering people and acting like jerks00:16:45
half legitimate half-government00:16:47
officials dressed up as Huck Rebels then00:16:49
support for the Huck Rebellion began to00:16:51
die out it was also about this time00:16:54
again around 1953 that the Filipino00:16:57
government was like wow thanks America00:16:59
we sure are glad you helped us out with00:17:01
those Rebels you can go ahead and leave00:17:03
whenever you want and the CIA was like00:17:06

leave while Lansdale was there he became00:17:10
friends with someone known as Raymond00:17:12
mcsaysay during lansdale's operations in00:17:15
the country Raymond was the head of00:17:17
their Department of Defense and Raymond00:17:19
aided Lansdale in his operations in the00:17:22
Philippines so the two became friends00:17:24
whenever Lansdale was doing his00:17:26
operations and around 1952 he says Hey00:17:29
Raymond why don't you uh why don't you00:17:31
run for president and Raymond says it's00:17:33
a great idea and begins to run but as00:17:36
soon as he does he quickly realizes that00:17:38
it's not him running for president it's00:17:40
the CIA running for president Raymond00:17:42
was used as a puppet and everything from00:17:44
his speeches to his policies were00:17:46
decided by the U.S government to ensure00:17:48
Raymond's election the CIA began running00:17:51
smear campaigns against all of Raymond's00:17:53
opponents everything from Rumors in the00:17:55
paper to spiking their drinks before00:17:57
they gave a speech in order to make them00:18:00
look unfavorable to the public one day00:18:02
before he gave a speech Raymond00:18:04
suggested that perhaps this time instead00:18:07
of of Lansdale and the CIA giving him a00:18:09
speech maybe Raymond could write his own00:18:12
speech or have one of the locals help00:18:13
him write his speech and Lansdale got so00:18:16
mad that he began to hit Raymond to the00:18:19
point that Raymond was knocked out by00:18:22
the time Raymond was elected in 1953 he00:18:24
was so battered and scared of the U.S00:18:26
government that he sent a message00:18:28
directly to President Eisenhower that00:18:30
said I will do whatever the United00:18:32
States wants me to do even if my people00:18:35
disagree with it also from Declassified00:18:37
reports whenever the day of the election00:18:40
came and Raymond was elected it turns00:18:42
out the CIA had illegally smuggled guns00:18:45
into the country and hidden them around00:18:47
the city so that if he wasn't elected00:18:50
they could say jakku in 1957 he even00:18:54
passed a new law that said00:18:57
the Philippines will never00:18:59
accept any form of Communism as it quote00:19:03

died in a plane crash in 1957 and00:19:14

to kill him but then decided they00:19:28

the top of all of them was a very00:19:44

would think this guy running for office00:19:49

some reason in May of 1954 the leader of00:19:56

they tried to convince Vietnamese00:20:32
soldiers that there were ghosts in the00:20:35
jungle and no I'm not kidding however he00:20:37
wasn't directly involved with that00:20:39
operation it was more so his influence00:20:41
in the Departments he created because at00:20:43
the time he was the lead in operation00:20:45
Mongoose operation Mongoose was the00:20:48
secret operation that didn't officially00:20:50
happen until they said it officially00:20:52
happened years later like they always do00:20:53
where Lansdale was officially tasked00:20:56
with killing Castro or at least00:20:58
destroying the Cuban government by00:21:00
whatever means possible after lansdale's00:21:02
failure with this and things like the00:21:04
Bay of Pigs operation he was officially00:21:06
fired from his position as head over CIA00:21:09
psychological warfare by the Kennedy00:21:12
administration more specifically00:21:14
McNamara however he still maintained00:21:16
several ties to the CIA after this and00:21:19
according to many theorists was a part00:21:21
of the Kennedy assassination or if he00:21:23
