00:01:32
I want my baby.
00:01:35
Can't you hear me?
00:01:38
I want my daughter.
00:01:40
This isn't my hospital.
00:01:43
This isn't my hospital.
00:01:45
-It'll all be over soon.
00:01:47
-No! Please, please, not without seeing my baby.
00:01:50
I want to see my baby!
00:01:53
No!
00:01:54
No, it's not!
00:01:56
It's me!
00:01:57
It's me!
00:01:58
-You'll be just fine.
00:01:59
-No!
00:02:02
Please help me!
00:02:30
Please, my baby.
00:02:32
-More Demoral, please.
00:02:34
-Doctor, help!
00:02:49
-Push!
00:02:50
Now, push!
00:02:52
-Stop!
00:02:53
Help!
00:02:58
-Push!
00:03:00
-You're with them!
00:03:02
You're with them!
00:03:03
-Push!
00:03:04
Push! -No, you can't have him!
00:03:05
No!
00:03:06
No!
00:03:15
-She doesn't want to let go of him.
00:03:16
You've got to push.
00:03:17
-No!
00:03:22
[SCREAMS]
00:03:26
-A beautiful baby girl.
00:03:27
[BABY CRYING]
00:05:14
-Don't touch the child.
00:05:18
You should be resting.
00:05:20
-I'm taking my baby out of here.
00:05:22
-I told you you didn't have anything to worry about.
00:05:25
Why don't you go back to bed and lie down?
00:05:27
It's the Demoral.
00:05:31
It takes a few hours to wear off.
00:06:05
[SCREAMS]
00:06:32
[LAUGHTER]
00:06:36
[CHATTER]
00:06:42
-It's really, it's unbelievable.
00:06:44
I mean, every time she walks into a room I hear chimes.
00:06:46
-You should.
00:06:47
Her bell has been rung more times than Notre Dame.
00:06:51
-We'd all be on a four day work week.
00:06:53
-You have to look at it from another point of view.
00:06:55
I mean, if she lives with him, she's psychotic.
00:06:57
If she divorces him, she's neurotic.
00:07:16
-Repetition is a bore.
00:07:19
But for the next 20 odd years, I don't want anybody
00:07:21
to say that I forgot, that it wasn't my responsibility,
00:07:26
that I had more important duties.
00:07:30
There should be nothing more important
00:07:31
than the proper raising of the child.
00:07:35
The toys she plays with, the book she reads,
00:07:38
her education, opportunities, friendships.
00:07:47
Her every moment, asleep or awake,
00:07:50
should be guided and protected.
00:08:33
The child is ours.
00:09:19
-I know.
00:09:24
-Whatever happened to that sunny day we were supposed to have?
00:09:27
-We still might have it.
00:09:28
It's just a passing shower.
00:09:29
-Where's the boss?
00:09:30
-In the back room. -Thanks Mary.
00:09:32
-Oh, Mr. Schreiber, I know I promised
00:09:34
them to you for yesterday.
00:09:37
I do, I do understand your-- I know
00:09:40
your customers are screaming.
00:09:43
Tomorrow.
00:09:45
Tomorrow, all right?
00:09:48
Oh, Mr. Schreiber it is a pleasure
00:09:50
to do business with a man like you.
00:09:53
Mr. Schreiber is unhappy.
00:09:55
-Mr. Schreiber is only happy when he's unhappy, I think.
00:09:58
-Nice.
00:10:00
Nice.
00:10:01
Just delightful.
00:10:03
That's fantastic.
00:10:06
That one.
00:10:08
That-- oh no, too cute.
00:10:10
Great.
00:10:11
Beautiful.
00:10:12
Oh!
00:10:13
-I get it, you sort of like them.
00:10:15
-You have a talent for coming up with the right thing
00:10:17
at the right time.
00:10:18
You're positively uncanny.
00:10:20
Beatrice!
00:10:21
Beatrice!
00:10:25
BEATRICE: You gotta yell?
00:10:26
-Only because you're going deaf.
00:10:28
And Schreiber is screaming for his patterns.
00:10:31
-Schreiber is you're problem.
00:10:32
You're mine.
00:10:33
-But I promised them for him first thing tomorrow morning.
00:10:36
-It's noon already.
00:10:37
-The three of us can do it.
00:10:39
-6 o'clock I go home.
00:10:40
Aw, Beatrice, not even for me?
00:10:42
-Not even for you would I keep my Maurice waiting one minute.
00:10:46
-Don't stand there!
00:10:47
Start cutting. -I'm cutting.
00:10:48
-Mary?
00:10:49
Mary?
00:10:50
-What is it?
00:10:51
-Can you work late?
00:10:52
-Uh-uh.
00:10:53
-Well, let me put it another way, I have a problem.
00:10:55
Therefore you are--
00:10:56
[CRASH]
00:10:57
-Uh-oh.
00:11:02
Jessica!
00:11:04
Jessica!
00:11:06
Jessica, someone just smashed into your car.
00:11:09
-Oh no! -Cut.
00:11:11
-Cut, cut, cut.
00:11:13
[SPEAKING RUSSIAN]
00:11:16
-Oh, is this your car?
00:11:18
-Did you do that?
00:11:19
-I am sorry about this--
00:11:20
-Do you realize that car's only got 600 miles on it?
00:11:23
-You know what, I was coming in and I
00:11:24
just got a little bit too close--
00:11:25
-How could you do such a stupid thing?
00:11:28
-I just got a little bit too close--
00:11:29
-This car is brand new I just bought it!
00:11:30
-I went to turn the wheel in one way
00:11:31
and it just went the other way-- -It's only got--
00:11:33
-600 miles on it.
00:11:34
I know, I'm sorry.
00:11:36
-I suppose you think that's funny.
00:11:38
-Well, just a little.
00:11:39
-You are the most inconsiderate bumbling
00:11:40
fool I've ever met in my life.
00:11:42
-Well, actually, we haven't met.
00:11:44
My name is uh--
00:11:45
-Excuse me, I don't want to be rude,
00:11:46
but I don't care what your name is.
00:11:47
Just take a good look at my car--
00:11:49
-Lady, now calm down, it's just a bent fender.
00:11:51
It's not the end of the world, for crying out loud.
00:11:54
-OK.
00:11:56
What are you going to do about it?
00:11:58
-Well, I, uh-- I'll tell you what.
00:12:02
I'll tell you what I'm going to do.
00:12:03
I'm going to go to my van.
00:12:04
I'm going to find the insurance policy, find a local agent
00:12:08
and have them fix it.
00:12:10
It's as simple as that.
00:12:11
-OK.
00:12:12
Could you do that now for me, please?
00:12:14
-Sure.
00:12:15
Coming right up.
00:12:16
Be right back.
00:12:18
-I'll wait right here.
00:12:19
-OK.
00:12:26
Say, look, I know it's-- Aha.
00:12:31
See?
00:12:35
-I'm waiting.
00:12:40
-Well, I'll tell you what.
00:12:44
I've got some good news and I've got some bad news.
00:12:47
-No jokes, please.
00:12:49
-First the good news.
00:12:50
Found the policy.
00:12:53
But--
00:12:54
-But? -It expired about two months ago.
00:12:57
-That is just marvelous.
00:13:00
You know you really are the most irresponsible,
00:13:03
unorganized, inconsiderate--
00:13:05
-Inconsiderate, selfish, bumbling fool you've ever met.
00:13:09
You know something? You're a terrific judge of character.
00:13:11
-Excuse me, could you please tell me
00:13:13
what you're going to do about my car?
00:13:16
-Well, uh, I'll tell you what.
00:13:17
You've got your key?
00:13:18
-Yeah.
00:13:22
-If you got to use it, OK, but would
00:13:24
you please be careful with it?
00:13:25
Because everything I own is in there.
00:13:26
Now, please, just take care and do anything you want to it.
00:13:29
and I'll hurry back. I'll give it back in no time.
00:13:31
-I just got this car three weeks ago!
00:13:33
It took me three weeks to learn how to drive it?
00:13:35
-Don't worry about it I'll get it back.
00:13:36
-If you break it my insurance will go up!
00:13:39
I--
00:13:52
-You gave him your car?
00:13:54
-He gave me his for security.
00:13:56
Besides, he has an honest face.
00:13:59
-Well so did the Boston Strangler.
00:14:01
-I trust him.
00:14:02
-Oh, darling, t there are a few things
00:14:03
you have to learn about men.
00:14:05
-Yes, teacher.
00:14:06
-Now you repeat after me.
00:14:07
All men are demanding.
00:14:09
-All men are demanding.
00:14:10
-All men are self serving.
00:14:11
-All men are self serving.
00:14:12
-All men are insensitive.
00:14:13
-Not my Maurice.
00:14:14
-Especially your Maurice.
00:14:16
-You know a little less about men
00:14:18
than you know about patterns.
00:14:20
-Finished.
00:14:23
-Tired? -Exhausted.
00:14:26
-Two hours ago I was exhausted.
00:14:28
Now I'm dead.
00:14:29
-Oh, stop complaining.
00:14:30
You said 6 o'clock.
00:14:31
Look, 6 o'clock.
00:14:32
-Uh-huh, uh-huh.
00:14:33
-Goodnight.
00:14:34
-Night.
00:14:36
-How am I going to explain this to Maurice?
00:14:38
-Explain what?
00:14:40
-That I have a headache.
00:14:41
You've got a headache?
00:14:49
-Your carriage is as good as new, Madame.
00:14:51
A little better since I had it washed and waxed.
00:14:54
-I don't believe it.
00:14:56
Nothing gets fixed in one day in San Fransisco.
00:14:58
Absolutely nothing.
00:14:59
How did you do it?
00:15:00
-A little charm.
00:15:01
And an extra $50.
00:15:03
-I'm sorry, but it really was your fault.
00:15:05
-Look, I banged up your car, so I
00:15:08
feel I owe you just a little bit of something.
00:15:09
So how about having dinner with me tonight?
00:15:11
-Thank you, but I don't want go out
00:15:12
to lunch, or dinner, or anything with strangers.
00:15:14
-You're right.
00:15:15
My name is Andy Stewart and--
00:15:16
-Goodnight Mr. Stewart.
00:15:17
-No, but, but it's not dutch treat.
00:15:19
I'll pay.
00:15:20
Hey, I mean it, honest!
00:15:42
-Hi.
00:15:43
It's 7:15 and I'm hungry.
00:15:45
If you want dinner, call me at 4,7,4, 3, 9,9,8.
00:15:49
Andy.
00:16:21
-Jessica Gordon?
00:16:22
-I should be so lucky.
00:16:26
Jessica?
00:16:27
Jessica?
00:16:29
For you.
00:16:35
-Who's it from? -I don't know.
00:16:48
-I don't believe it.
00:16:49
-What is it?
00:16:50
-It's a menu.
00:16:51
-A what?
00:16:52
-A menu.
00:16:53
The boy who bumped into my car.
00:16:54
-What does it say?
00:16:55
-2:00 PM and starving.
00:16:57
I think he's crazy.
00:17:05
-I haven't eaten for 29 hours, Miss Gordon.
00:17:09
-How do you know my name?
00:17:11
-I know your name, your address, your phone number,
00:17:13
your zip code, and your motor number.
00:17:16
Actually it's your cars motor number.
00:17:18
-My driver's registration.
00:17:20
-How about dinner?
00:17:21
You choose the place.
00:17:24
-Please give up, Mr. Stewart.
00:17:26
-I haven't even started to work at it.
00:17:29
-If I do go to dinner with you, will you
00:17:32
promise not to leave any more messages on my phone machine?
00:17:34
-It's a deal. What would you like?
00:17:38
-The menu you sent me. Have you ever been there?
00:17:40
-I only got in town yesterday.
00:17:41
I haven't been anywhere.
00:17:43
-Why don't we try it?
00:18:15
[SPEAKING JAPANESE]
00:18:24
-I just, I thought I'd order ahead,
00:18:25
just on the chance that you'd come.
00:18:28
-I just got in town yesterday, I haven't been anywhere?
00:18:31
-Just wanted to make an impression, honest.
00:18:34
-Where did you ever learn Japanese?
00:18:37
-I spent a couple of years in the Orient.
00:18:38
-Were you born there?
00:18:40
-Nothing quite that romantic.
00:18:42
I was born in a small town in Kansas.
00:18:45
How about you? Are you a native of San Francisco?
00:18:47
-No, I've only been here for two years.
00:18:49
I was born in New York.
00:18:50
-Well, you see how much we have in common?
00:18:53
Neither of us i born here.
00:18:55
A little more Sake?
00:18:56
-No, thank you.
00:18:57
I'm fine.
00:19:00
I never knew my mother.
00:19:01
She died during childbirth, I was told.
00:19:03
And I never could find out who my father was.
00:19:06
But for an orphan, I've been awfully lucky, really.
00:19:09
-You don't have to be lucky to be a model.
00:19:12
All you have to have is high cheekbones and long legs.
00:19:14
-I'm not a model.
00:19:15
I'm a designer.
00:19:16
-At 22?
00:19:18
-I told you I was lucky.
00:19:21
It's like I have this guardian angel that is watching over me
00:19:24
and he seems to have more helpers than Santa Clause.
00:19:27
-Well, that's not a bad thing.
00:19:31
-When I was six I lived with this fabulous woman.
00:19:34
I used to call her Aunt Irene.
00:19:36
We lived in New Orleans.
00:19:39
Then I won a scholarship to school.
00:19:41
I got a job in New York at a top fashion house.
00:19:44
And the very next year some man, I never even knew who he was,
00:19:49
arranged for me to have my own showing.
00:19:52
And the next thing you know, here I am in San Fransisco.
00:19:55
-I want to know something.
00:19:56
Where was this guardian angel of yours
00:19:57
when I bumped into your car?
00:20:01
-Watching?
00:20:07
-I like your eyes.
00:20:09
-I don't care for compliments, thank you,
00:20:11
unless they're honest.
00:20:15
-When I lie my ears turn red.
00:20:18
-Well I'm going to watch for that.
00:20:27
-Success seems to come really easy to you, doesn't it?
00:20:31
-I don't know.
00:20:33
Besides, being a success means you're the best at what you do.
00:20:36
And I'm not yet, I'm still learning.
00:20:38
There's still thousands of things I want to do.
00:20:41
-Like what?
00:20:42
-Travel.
00:20:43
See Paris, France.
00:20:44
Live there for awhile.
00:20:47
Hong Kong and see the rest of the far east.
00:20:49
-Interested in oriental design, huh?
00:20:51
-For my work they use the colors,
00:20:52
the drapes, the textures.
00:20:53
Design is all fascinating.
00:20:56
-You know, I've got some books in my van
00:20:58
I bet you'd be real interested in looking at.
00:21:01
-Andy?
00:21:02
-What?
00:21:04
We've been together for maybe two, two and half,
00:21:06
maybe three hours, and I know next to nothing about you.
00:21:08
-What?
00:21:09
I'm single.
00:21:10
I'm a freelance writer living alone in San Francisco,
00:21:13
until I met you, that is.
00:21:14
-Your ears are turning red.
00:21:17
Seriously.
00:21:19
You know everything about me, even my motor number.
00:21:22
-All I am is locked in my van.
00:21:24
And while you're looking at the art books,
00:21:25
I'm going to tell you the fascinating story of the life
00:21:28
and the times of Andrew Stewart.
00:21:31
Come on.
00:21:49
-Oh, wait a minute!
00:22:13
Nice try.
00:22:19
-Jess, what'd I say?
00:23:03
-I've been trying for three days now.
00:23:05
-You're gaining ground.
00:23:10
-Whenever I make a move, you change the subject.
00:23:14
-I guess I just don't want to end up
00:23:15
as one of those girls in one of your stories.
00:23:18
-Now wait a minute, I'm not that kind of a writer.
00:23:21
-What kind of a writer are you?
00:23:23
-You did it again.
00:23:26
-Well?
00:23:27
-I write for magazines.
00:23:30
You know, travel brochures and sunday
00:23:32
supplements and stuff like that.
00:23:33
Anything that kind of keeps me moving around.
00:23:36
-Agnes said you were a drifter.
00:23:38
-She would.
00:23:39
No, I didn't mean that.
00:23:43
No, my father had a small newspaper
00:23:45
and he died before I got back from Nam.
00:23:49
So I sold it and I spent some time
00:23:51
in the Far East and Europe.
00:23:54
I've hit about 19 states in the past 12 weeks,
00:23:57
which explains why my insurance policy lapsed.
00:24:01
-Doesn't explain it to me.
00:24:04
-Well, you'd be surprised how long it takes my mail
00:24:05
to get from one general post office to another.
00:24:10
Here, cheers.
00:24:49
-How about it?
00:24:51
-Don't tell me you believe in that junk.
00:24:53
-Oh, are you kidding? I sure do. I even charge my battery by Tinkerbell.
00:24:58
Two fortunes, please.
00:25:00
-Do I hear the sound of silver coins?
00:25:02
-Coming right up.
00:25:04
-Let's have it.
00:25:07
-The music that makes men dance.
00:25:10
-Fortunes and philosophy, all for the same price.
00:25:13
-What's your name, honey?
00:25:15
-Jessica, Jessica Gordon.
00:25:21
-For you.
00:25:22
-Thank you.
00:25:29
-OK what does yours say?
00:25:31
-In the second millennium, the child of the child
00:25:33
shall inherit the earth and havoc shall reign.
00:25:35
What does yours say?
00:25:37
-Says you are going to get the Nobel Prize in literature,
00:25:41
own three houses, two cars, one yacht and marry a girl
00:25:47
you met in San Fransisco a week ago yesterday.
00:25:52
-Come on, really.
00:25:53
Come on, show it to me.
00:25:55
Andy, come on.
00:25:56
-Oh no. -Andy, come on now.
00:25:57
I showed you might.
00:25:58
Play fair. Let me see it!
00:25:59
-No!
00:26:00
No!
00:26:01
No, no!
00:26:02
All right, I'll tell you.
00:26:03
I'll tell you.
00:26:05
-OK.
00:26:09
-It says, I love you, Jessica.
00:26:30
-Jessica!
00:26:32
I love you!
00:26:36
I love you, Jessica!
00:26:45
Jessica!
00:26:47
I love you!
00:30:15
-John Wayne, you're not.
00:30:17
-Listen, lady.
00:30:18
This is a lot of horse.
00:30:26
-Andy!
00:30:28
-Whoa!
00:30:30
Whoa!
00:30:31
Whoa!
00:30:32
-Andy!
00:30:33
Andy!
00:30:35
-Whoa!
00:30:36
Whoa!
00:30:37
Whoa!
00:30:38
-Andy!
00:30:39
-Whoa!
00:30:40
Whoa!
00:30:50
-Andy!
00:30:52
Andy!
00:31:53
-I know that I've seen him someplace before.
00:31:58
At the shop, in New York.
00:32:01
I just can't remember where.
00:32:04
-We're just lucky he was there.
00:32:06
-We're lucky?
00:32:08
What about him?
00:32:10
He saved my life and got killed for doing it.
00:32:15
-Honey, it's not your fault.
00:32:18
It was just a damn stupid accident.
00:32:21
-Please, Andy, I just have to be alone tonight.
00:32:24
I've gotta be by myself.
00:32:25
-I can't believe you're being this way.
00:32:27
-Please, Andy.
00:32:28
Go away, Please.
00:32:29
-It's not my fault. It's not even the horses fault.
00:32:33
Jessica!
00:32:36
-Go away Andy. Please.
00:32:39
-You don't mean that.
00:32:41
-I mean it.
00:32:47
-Jessica, look, I'm sorry about the guy that got killed,
00:32:49
but what does that have to do with the way we
00:32:51
feel about each other?
00:32:52
-I don't feel anything.
00:32:53
-The hell you don't.
00:32:56
-Look, Andy, it's over.
00:32:58
-Why?
00:33:00
-Because I'm bad news.
00:33:01
Don't you understand?
00:33:02
I'm bad for any man.
00:33:04
-Because a stranger got killed?
00:33:07
-Andy, he's not the first.
00:33:09
He's the third. -Third what?
00:33:12
-The first time I was only 16.
00:33:16
I met a boy in art school.
00:33:17
We were friends, good friends.
00:33:19
He committed suicide.
00:33:20
-A lot of people comm--
00:33:21
-And just last winter I met a man at a party.
00:33:23
We dated.
00:33:24
He was killed in a hunting accident.
00:33:27
-Were you there?
00:33:28
-What do you mean, was I there?
00:33:30
What difference does it make?
00:33:31
Don't you see that every time I get close to a man he dies?
00:33:33
-I still say it was just a coin--
00:33:35
-Please go away Andy.
00:33:37
Just go away. Go home, leave me alone.
00:33:39
Please, go away.
00:33:40
-No, Jessica, damnit.
00:33:41
Not with a door between us.
00:33:43
If you want to get me out of your life,
00:33:44
then you're going to have come out here and look at me
00:33:45
and tell me.
00:33:59
-Go away, Andy.
00:34:07
-Do you mean that?
00:34:10
-Get out of my life.
00:34:36
-I'll always love you, Jessica.
00:35:29
-Want to talk about it?
00:35:31
-No.
00:35:32
-It's not exactly a secret.
00:35:33
-I said, I don't want to talk about it.
00:35:35
-Look, for the last three days you
00:35:37
have been slamming doors, ripping up
00:35:39
designs, and yelling at everyone.
00:35:41
-Agnes, please don't push me and don't nag at me.
00:35:44
-I am just trying to talk some sense into you.
00:35:47
I told you the first time I laid eyes
00:35:49
on him what he was all about.
00:35:50
-You don't know anything about him.
00:35:51
-Well I know that he walked out on you.
00:35:53
And good riddance.
00:35:54
-He didn't walk out on me.
00:35:55
I sent him away.
00:35:57
-But that's even better.
00:35:59
Oh Jessica, please, trust me.
00:36:01
I know that he's not for you.
00:36:03
Where are you-- Come back here!
00:36:05
Jessica!
00:36:25
-Andy?
00:36:27
Andy?
00:36:31
Andy?
00:36:32
Andy?
00:36:48
I love you, Andy.
00:37:03
-[SPEAKING LATIN]
00:37:32
[SPEAKING LATIN]
00:38:52
-Oh, Astaroth, the Prince of Darkness.
00:38:57
Ever since I evoked you from the blackness
00:38:59
I have been your servant.
00:39:05
Immortality will be mine.
00:39:11
So long as I serve you, obey you,
00:39:18
and fulfill your every wish.
00:39:23
As you have commanded, the parent vessel
00:39:26
for the mortal child that you want to father with you, she is
00:39:36
virginal in body and mind, carefully
00:39:39
nurtured to perfection.
00:39:45
Show me a sign, Astaroth.
00:39:51
For by the oath I swear, the time is now.
00:40:13
-Come on, Jessica!
00:40:14
Jessica Stewart!
00:40:20
-Father Wheatley!
00:40:21
-Hell fire and damnation!
00:40:24
-Sorry about that.
00:40:25
-It's OK.
00:40:27
Cussing is a bad habit of mine.
00:40:29
One of many.
00:40:30
-Jessica Gordon, Father Wheatley.
00:40:35
-Ooh, your hands are cold, Jessica.
00:40:37
That means you've got a warm heart,
00:40:38
of so they'd have us believe.
00:40:41
Well you're right, Andy.
00:40:43
She's as pretty as a spring morning.
00:40:47
Say, are you any good at sign painting?
00:40:48
-Uh- uh.
00:40:49
Awful.
00:40:51
-You, my dear?
00:40:52
-I'm afraid not.
00:40:54
-Oh, pity.
00:40:57
Still the good Lord will provide.
00:40:59
Come in, come in.
00:41:07
I'm in sore need of a cleaner, too.
00:41:09
You have no idea how dusty this place gets.
00:41:12
But that's my problem.
00:41:13
Your concern is the wedding, right?
00:41:15
When is it to be? -Next Wednesday, Father.
00:41:17
Right?
00:41:18
Jess, what are you doing out there, honey?
00:41:19
Come on in.
00:41:20
Come on.
00:42:27
-Are you OK?
00:42:29
-I'm cold.
00:42:31
-I hope the heater hasn't given up the ghost.
00:42:34
-It's freezing.
00:42:35
-I better check it out.
00:42:39
Why don't you two go out in God's warm sunshine?
00:42:41
There's a nice little garden out there.
00:42:43
-OK Father.
00:43:26
-Andy?
00:43:27
-Yeah, Father?
00:43:29
-I wonder if you'd mind-- something has come up.
00:43:33
Very important.
00:43:36
Could I speak to you tomorrow?
00:43:38
-Sure, father.
00:43:42
Come on Jess, let's go.
00:44:09
-A little more wine, Madame?
00:44:11
-Just a touch.
00:44:13
-You know something, I've got some stuff back home
00:44:14
in storage, a stereo, some pictures,
00:44:17
and a couple of Tiffany lamps.
00:44:19
-Everything will fit just perfectly.
00:44:22
-A highboy chest.
00:44:24
um, morris chair with a lace doily
00:44:26
and my father's old moose head.
00:44:27
-Oh, Andy.
00:44:29
-I'm only kidding.
00:44:31
-In that case, it's time for the surprise.
00:44:33
-Hm?
00:44:34
I'm rather proud of my cool.
00:44:35
-You've been dying of curiosity, admit it.
00:44:37
-Only on the inside.
00:44:39
-Well, come on.
00:44:42
-Oh.
00:44:43
-Come on.
00:44:47
-Well?
00:44:50
-Hey, where did you find it?
00:44:52
-I've had my eye on it for about six months now,
00:44:55
only it's, uh, too big for one person.
00:44:58
-I sleep on the right side.
00:44:59
-Well, perfect, because I sleep on the left.
00:45:02
-Oh, man.
00:45:04
I see you like a firm mattress.
00:45:06
-It's great for the back, you know.
00:45:10
-There's only one thing, I like privacy in my bedroom.
00:45:15
-How'd he get in here?
00:45:17
-Well I know how he's getting out.
00:45:22
Hey, cat, get.
00:45:31
Come on, cat.
00:45:32
Come on.
00:45:33
-No, I'll take him.
00:45:35
I'll take him. Come on, baby.
00:45:37
Go on, go find yourself a playmate.
00:45:44
-Come back to bed.
00:45:57
Do you love me?
00:46:01
-Yeah.
00:46:02
-How much?
00:46:04
-Forever and ever.
00:46:14
-Andy.
00:46:15
-I'm busy.
00:46:16
-Oh, Andy.
00:46:19
-What?
00:46:20
-Have you ever been in love before?
00:46:23
-That's a dumb thing to ask.
00:46:25
-Well, have you?
00:46:28
-I loved a girl in New Orleans.
00:46:30
Her name was Linda Isley.
00:46:32
And that's been, uh, oh, I don't know how long it's been.
00:46:39
-As long as it's over.
00:47:35
-Andy, at least postpone the wedding.
00:47:38
-But, Father, I don't understand what--
00:47:41
-Neither do I. It's just that, I do know
00:47:45
that she's been touched by Astaroth.
00:47:51
-By who?
00:47:55
-The devil, Astaroth.
00:47:58
-Father, come on.
00:48:00
Is this some kind of a joke?
00:48:02
-No.
00:48:03
No, I looked it up.
00:48:04
The signs are all there.
00:48:07
That unnatural chill, that cold wind
00:48:09
that came sweeping through the church.
00:48:11
-Yeah, but these old buildings are all like that.
00:48:14
-No, no.
00:48:15
When she passed the altar, the darkness came.
00:48:26
-You're serious?
00:48:29
Oh, come on Father.
00:48:30
I can't get involved in your superstitions.
00:48:32
Yes or no? Will you marry us tomorrow or not?
00:48:33
-Would you would least delay until I
00:48:35
can contact Father Kemschler.
00:48:37
He can answer-- -Who is this Father Kemschler?
00:48:40
-He's an authority on, on the Book of the Dead, and Satan,
00:48:45
and the forces of evil.
00:48:52
-I think we'll have a civil ceremony.
00:48:54
Good bye, Father.
00:49:00
-Brawn was a bumbler.
00:49:02
I mean, he was devoted and conscientious,
00:49:04
but the man was inept.
00:49:05
I'm sure you'll agree with me that he could have protected
00:49:08
Jessica without sacrificing himself.
00:49:12
-But that doesn't solve the present problem, does it?
00:49:14
-No, oh no, no, no, of course not.
00:49:17
Of course you're, you're right, Mr. Rimmin.
00:49:20
The problem is Jessica.
00:49:22
However I do think it's a minor-- minor,
00:49:29
I can assure you that-- this, uh, this, uh, well.
00:49:34
What, what, what, what, what should I call it?
00:49:36
A uh, an infatuation.
00:49:38
That's it, that's perfect.
00:49:40
This infatuation will pass.
00:49:42
[CATS MEOWING]
00:49:43
-I, I promise you that.
00:49:45
I-- I-- There's no need, no need, for concern, Mr. Rimmin.
00:49:54
There is, there is no reason for you
00:49:57
to have bothered yourself by, by coming here.
00:49:59
[CATS MEOWING]
00:50:00
-Mr. Rimmin, I've-- I've never, I've never,
00:50:03
I've never failed you.
00:50:04
I, I have had the two most difficult years-- No!
00:50:08
Mr. Rimmin, you know my record.
00:50:10
You know my sense of responsibility.
00:50:12
Mr. Rimmin, Mr. Rimmin, I've never asked you for it.
00:50:16
Please, please, please, please, give me another chance!
00:50:18
Oh, God!
00:50:19
Please, I've never asked you for anything
00:50:21
just help me, just this one time.
00:50:24
Mr. Rimmin, please, please, there
00:50:26
has to be something you can do!
00:50:27
Please, please, Mr. Rimmin.
00:50:30
Please, please!
00:50:31
Please!
00:50:32
Please, please!
00:50:34
[CATS MEOWING]
00:50:44
[SCREAMS]
00:50:49
-See you tomorrow.
00:50:50
-11:30, and be ready.
00:50:51
I don't want to get married without you.
00:50:52
-OK.
00:50:56
Bye.
00:51:13
[BREAKING GLASS]
00:51:28
-Oh, damn.
00:51:29
It would have to be my bed.
00:51:31
[CRASH]
00:52:00
-We'll be right down.
00:52:09
Jessica?
00:52:12
Hey, it's the impatient groom.
00:52:34
Jessica!
00:52:55
Jessica!
00:52:57
Jessica?
00:53:14
Father Wheatley?
00:53:18
Father?
00:53:28
Father?
00:54:00
[BELLS TOLLING]
00:54:01
-Father?
00:55:03
-Oh, Aunt Irene!
00:55:05
Oh!
00:55:07
-Let me look at you.
00:55:09
-Oh, really, you haven't changed.
00:55:10
Not a bit.
00:55:11
-Jessica, I thought I taught you never to lie.
00:55:14
-Really, Mr. Rimmoin, she hasn't.
00:55:16
She's just as I remembered.
00:55:19
-Get in the car, darling.
00:55:20
We have plenty of time to talk.
00:55:27
-She looks rather well, wouldn't you say?
00:55:30
-The last time I saw her, she was all arms and legs.
00:55:34
-I was afraid, perhaps, the post hypnotic suggestion
00:55:36
may have made her forget me.
00:55:38
-I merely obscured her memory of the past two years.
00:55:41
San Francisco, Agnes.
00:55:47
She was a warm friend of yours, wasn't she?
00:55:50
Well, of course, she has no memory of the boy either.
00:55:54
-Please don't think me presumptuous Mr. Rimmin,
00:55:56
but, who does she think you are?
00:56:01
-Why, a warm friend of yours, I guess.
00:57:21
-Here.
00:57:36
-Brutus!
00:57:37
Oh, hello baby.
00:57:39
Hello.
00:57:41
Everything's exactly as I remember it.
00:57:43
-I'm afraid you've outgrown your old room.
00:57:46
-That's where I stay anyway.
00:57:48
-Ah, well.
00:57:50
It's been a long trip, hm?
00:57:51
Why don't you freshen up?
00:57:53
-I could use a hot bath.
00:57:55
Come on Brutus.
00:57:56
Come on.
00:57:57
Come on.
00:58:01
-I didn't realize how much I missed her.
00:58:05
-Personal attachment.
00:58:08
-I thought it was important, Mr. Rimmin,
00:58:11
to give her emotional security.
00:58:14
-You're quite right.
00:58:19
This room has an old world charm that I find quite refreshing.
00:58:25
-It's difficult, but I try to retain some of the old values.
00:58:30
However, keeping the proper help and teaching--
00:58:33
-You're aware of the problem.
00:58:36
-Agnes did mention an infatuation,
00:58:38
but I thought she and Brown--
00:58:42
-You were saying?
00:58:44
-Nothing important, Sir.
00:58:47
-Jessica and Andrew Stewart are in love.
00:58:54
And as long as that love endures,
00:58:57
Jessica's union with Astaroth cannot be consummated.
00:59:02
-In the past, when problems arose,
00:59:05
an accident took care of it.
00:59:09
-Yes, but it's too late for an accident.
00:59:15
We cannot destroy him until we destroy their love.
00:59:19
-I could think of at least a dozen ways--
00:59:21
-Agnes made that same mistake.
00:59:25
-Mr. Rimmin, I'm not Agnes.
00:59:30
I know if you involve yourself, the problem
00:59:34
is anything but simple.
00:59:36
-It's soluble.
00:59:38
-Of course.
00:59:43
-Jessica has no memory of Andrew Stewart.
00:59:48
Now he must be made to forget her.
00:59:50
-Yes.
00:59:53
But how?
00:59:57
-I believe it was Eve who first discovered the secret.
01:00:02
She used an apple.
01:00:09
I'll be a bit more inventive.
01:00:16
I'll use the temptation of old love.
01:00:52
-Ladies and gentlemen, flight number 34,
01:00:54
service from San Fransisco to New Orleans
01:00:56
will be arriving shortly at gate number 3.
01:01:00
-I'm sorry, but she's--
01:01:01
-Look, I've got to see her!
01:01:02
-The regulations are quite--
01:01:03
-Lady, I didn't fly all the way down here from San Fransisco
01:01:05
to be stopped by some silly rule.
01:01:07
Please.
01:01:08
-I don't have the authority.
01:01:09
Now her mother is in the waiting room.
01:01:11
Perhaps she'll let you go see her.
01:01:16
-Pardon me.
01:01:21
-Linda?
01:01:23
-Andy.
01:01:27
Andy.
01:01:35
I don't know why or how you're here but, but thank God.
01:01:39
-Sit down.
01:01:43
Is this your daughter?
01:01:46
Then this is why I'm here.
01:01:49
-You came to write a story?
01:01:52
-No.
01:01:53
-No more stories, my child is in pain, do you understand?
01:01:55
She's convulsing, tearing herself apart.
01:01:57
-I'm not here to do a story.
01:01:58
I just want to talk.
01:01:59
-All I've gotten from everyone is talk.
01:02:00
Nothing but talk.
01:02:06
I want somebody to do something.
01:02:09
-I don't know what I can do, but-- your husband?
01:02:18
-He died two years ago.
01:02:22
-Andy, what am I going to do?
01:02:24
-Just start from the beginning.
01:02:26
There was nothing in the newspaper.
01:02:28
-It was three or four days ago.
01:02:31
She fell off her bike.
01:02:34
The neighbor said she was frightened by a cat.
01:02:37
It's stupid.
01:02:39
She loves cats, dogs, birds.
01:02:41
It's insane.
01:02:43
-Had she ever drawn this before?
01:02:47
-No.
01:02:48
The first thing she said was that her eyes hurt.
01:02:50
And then--
01:02:51
-Mrs. Dayton?
01:02:53
-I think your little girl is going to be fine.
01:02:58
-An hour ago I saw that--
01:03:00
-Her fever has broken. She's sleeping now.
01:03:04
-Oh, thank God.
01:03:07
I can't believe it.
01:03:10
Cindy is fine and you're here.
01:03:13
-I'd like to keep the girl under observation for 48 hours.
01:03:16
-Anything you say, doctor.
01:03:17
-Why don't you go home and get some sleep.
01:03:19
-I think I'll feed her first.
01:03:23
-Not a bad idea.
01:03:31
-OK Linda, what'll it be?
01:03:32
Antoine's, Gallatoise's?
01:03:34
-You remember the first time we ever had dinner together?
01:03:36
-Oh, no you don't.
01:03:38
I am in no mood to share a hot dog.
01:03:54
[WHIMPERING]
01:04:11
-Everything is fine.
01:04:35
-Oh, will you be serious for just one minute.
01:04:37
-But I don't want to be.
01:04:41
Cindy's better and you're in New Orleans.
01:04:48
I don't want to hear about crazy drawings or Jessica.
01:04:55
You sure you love her?
01:04:58
-Yes.
01:05:00
-But you only knew her for three weeks.
01:05:03
Come on, let's have some wine.
01:05:04
-No.
01:05:06
-Champagne, champagne to celebrate
01:05:08
your coming to my rescue.
01:05:09
-I didn't do anything.
01:05:11
-Shh.
01:05:12
I don't want t hear about that.
01:05:23
I deserved that.
01:05:27
-I didn't mean--
01:05:28
-No, no, no.
01:05:30
I really did deserve it.
01:05:33
I sent you that stupid letter.
01:05:35
I got married on a whim.
01:05:36
I made one mistake after another.
01:05:43
I don't blame you for being angry.
01:05:46
-I'm not angry.
01:05:48
-I would be.
01:05:50
-Well, I'm not.
01:05:51
-Forgive me?
01:05:55
[DOOR CLOSING]
01:05:57
-Is there somebody here?
01:05:59
-No.
01:06:05
-Where's the child?
01:06:40
-She went into a coma immediately, is that correct?
01:06:41
-Yes.
01:06:42
-And she constantly drew the pentacle?
01:06:43
-I don't know what she was drawing.
01:06:45
-Was she talking gibberish?
01:06:46
A foreign language? -She was talking English.
01:06:48
-Well what did she say?
01:06:50
Exactly, word for word.
01:06:52
-How do I know?
01:06:55
Mostly she mumbled.
01:06:56
She, she said something about a child, or, or, or, a second
01:06:59
child, or children taking of the world.
01:07:01
I don't know.
01:07:02
-Father Kemschler, is all this necessary?
01:07:04
-If it weren't, I wouldn't have flown down here.
01:07:06
-I know you're trying to help.
01:07:08
I've got dozens of letters from people who want to help
01:07:10
but it isn't necessary.
01:07:12
My child is fully recovered.
01:07:14
-I don't believe it.
01:07:15
-Well that is your problem.
01:07:16
The Doctor said we could bring her home in 48 hours.
01:07:19
-I was there.
01:07:20
-You saw her and she looked fine?
01:07:22
No symptoms of anything?
01:07:23
-Well we didn't exactly see her but--
01:07:24
-Call the hospital.
01:07:26
-Father Kemschler, it's one thing for you
01:07:28
to break into my house but to stand there and give me orders!
01:07:32
That's something else.
01:07:34
-Please, call the hospital.
01:07:37
Is that better?
01:07:56
-It's too bad about Father Wheatley.
01:07:57
I never thought him a man to take his own life.
01:07:59
-Who said he did?
01:08:00
-The police.
01:08:01
-I've known him all my life.
01:08:02
He didn't commit suicide.
01:08:05
-Are you trying to tell me that he was murdered?
01:08:07
By whom?
01:08:08
Why?
01:08:09
-Three questions.
01:08:12
You wouldn't understand the answer to any of them.
01:08:14
[CRYING]
01:08:26
-Father Kemschler, is all this necessary?
01:08:29
-If it weren't, I wouldn't have flown down here.
01:08:40
-Baby?
01:08:42
Baby?
01:08:43
Baby, it's mommy.
01:08:45
Baby, my baby.
01:08:49
My baby.
01:08:54
[INAUDIBLE]
01:08:58
-She's burning up.
01:08:59
-I'll get a doctor.
01:09:01
-It won't help.
01:09:03
-Do you have a better suggestion?
01:09:06
-An exorcism.
01:09:07
-Father, we're not living in the Dark Ages.
01:09:09
-You can prove that?
01:09:10
-I don't want to hear philosophy.
01:09:12
My child is desperately ill.
01:09:13
-Unless we get her out of here and perform
01:09:15
a right of exorcism, your child will die.
01:09:18
-That's a hell of a thing to say.
01:09:20
-That's pretty close to the truth.
01:09:21
Don't talk in parables.
01:09:23
Come out and say what you have to say.
01:09:25
-She's in a coma.
01:09:27
She draws the Pentagon of Astaroth.
01:09:28
-Nobody can make any sense of those scratchings.
01:09:30
-Her soul--
01:09:31
-Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait a minute.
01:09:34
Wait a minute.
01:09:37
I saw that sign.
01:09:38
I saw it in Father Wheatley's church in San Fransisco.
01:09:41
And that quote on the wall, a fortune teller gave it to us.
01:09:45
We thought it was a joke. -That's the key to all this.
01:09:47
The sign of the devil Astaroth in San Fransisco.
01:09:49
The sign of Astaroth in New Orleans.
01:09:53
You're the linking factor.
01:09:56
Only an exorcism will tell us why.
01:10:01
You must trust me.
01:10:03
-Trust you?
01:10:05
You break into my house.
01:10:07
You scare me half to death.
01:10:08
You tell me my baby is possessed.
01:10:11
She's not half as sick as you are.
01:10:16
-Perhaps she'll listen to you.
01:10:19
-Father, that exorcism, it's admitting evil.
01:10:23
-It's insane.
01:10:25
My baby fell off a bike.
01:10:28
She hurt herself.
01:10:33
Tell him Andy.
01:10:37
Tell him.
01:11:13
[HAMMERING]
01:11:18
[WHIMPERING]
01:11:38
-Whatever you hear, whatever you think you hear,
01:11:40
do not come into this room.
01:11:41
Is that clear?
01:11:42
-I'm staying here.
01:11:44
-You're not trained.
01:11:45
You're not prepared.
01:11:48
You don't even believe.
01:11:49
-All the same, I'm staying.
01:11:51
-Then there'll be no exorcism.
01:11:52
I'm sorry.
01:11:53
-But what harm can there be if Andy stays?
01:11:56
-Because I can't perform the right with anyone
01:11:58
in this room who is not an ordained priest of God!
01:12:05
-All right, Father.
01:12:08
[WHIMPERING]
01:12:23
-Your powers seem to be weakening, Astaroth.
01:12:26
Otherwise, why choose such a frail battle ground?
01:12:37
[LAUGHTER]
01:12:40
-I presume you'll be showing me some more
01:12:42
of what's left of your strength.
01:12:48
No, Astaroth. No allies from outside.
01:12:49
Just one on one.
01:12:50
You and me, like the last time.
01:12:53
Oh, you remember, huh?
01:12:57
I will show you the power of God.
01:13:00
Holy, holy, holy.
01:13:02
I'll make you kneel before it.
01:13:07
In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
01:13:15
[SPEAKING LATIN]
01:13:23
[SCREAMING]
01:13:28
-It's all right.
01:13:33
[SPEAKING LATIN]
01:14:10
[SPEAKING LATIN]
01:14:19
-Let God rise.
01:14:21
Let his enemies be scattered.
01:14:23
Let them also that hate him flee before him.
01:14:25
[INAUDIBLE] As wax melteth before the fire,
01:14:32
so let the wicked perish in the presence of God.
01:14:36
[INAUDIBLE]
01:14:44
[SCREAMING]
01:14:52
-No, no.
01:14:56
[SPEAKING LATIN]
01:15:02
-It's OK.
01:15:10
FATHER KEMSCLHER: [SPEAKING LATIN]
01:15:16
-I'm cold.
01:15:18
-I'll get a blanket.
01:15:19
Where is it?
01:15:20
-No. It's in the hallway.
01:15:21
Andy?
01:15:23
What's happening out there?
01:15:26
-I don't know, baby.
01:15:43
[CAT MEOWING]
01:15:46
-Andy!
01:15:57
-Unto thee will I cry oh Lord.
01:16:01
Unto thee oh Lord do I lift up, oh my God I trust in thee.
01:16:05
Let me not be ashamed.
01:16:06
Let not thine enemy triumph over me.
01:16:28
-Father Kemschler?
01:16:37
Father Kemschler?
01:16:49
Father Kemschler, are you all right?
01:16:51
[DOOR CREAKING]
01:18:00
-Mommy!
01:18:01
Mommy!
01:18:34
-Pack your things.
01:18:35
-Why?
01:18:38
-Because we've failed.
01:18:40
If we move her, he'll follow.
01:18:42
-Then we'll move her again and again--
01:18:43
-Until what?
01:18:47
-Until his love dies or he does.
01:19:09
-I knew it.
01:19:11
I knew I'd find the answer up there.
01:19:13
-What answer?
01:19:16
-Your Jessica has been chosen to bear the child of Astaroth.
01:19:24
-Oh, Father, come on.
01:19:25
You don't expect me to believe that?
01:19:27
-You saw that poor child upstairs.
01:19:29
You saw Father Wheatley dead.
01:19:31
You met the presence of evil.
01:19:32
Is it so difficult to believe?
01:19:34
-Because there's got to be a rational explanation
01:19:36
for everything. I know that.
01:19:37
-You know nothing.
01:19:39
I know that I'll never stop loving her.
01:19:41
-And I know they'll do anything they can to stop you.
01:19:46
-They'll just have to kill me.
01:19:51
-You have no idea what you're letting yourself in for.
01:19:59
You have no conception of what they can do to you.
01:20:02
They'll your life a you living hell because they've
01:20:05
got to destroy your love for Jessica.
01:20:07
They may kill you.
01:20:09
And by that time, you may want them to.
01:20:12
-Father, this is the 20th century.
01:20:14
Things like that don't happen anymore.
01:20:17
-Hm.
01:20:26
You know your Shakespeare?
01:20:28
-Yes.
01:20:29
Of course.
01:20:31
-"There are more things in heaven and earth Horatio than
01:20:33
are dreamt of in your philosophy."
01:20:42
When you need me, I'll be there.
01:21:12
[DOOR CLOSING]
01:21:16
-She fell asleep before she could-- You're not leaving?
01:21:21
-I've got to find her, Linda.
01:21:24
-But you don't even know where to start.
01:21:26
-Jessica mentioned a Sister Monica, in New York.
01:21:36
-I have a feeling I'm going to be making another mistake
01:21:38
if I let you go.
01:21:40
-You don't have a choice.
01:21:43
-That much in love?
01:21:57
You mind if I keep loving you?
01:22:00
-No.
01:22:09
-If you don't find her--
01:22:13
-I will.
01:22:58
-Father?

When you click on it, the current frame from the video will be saved to your computer in JPEG format.
