So first of all I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas, guys. And this video is my little gift to you. I highly doubt I could have found one that was redder and had a better sound😁 When it comes to the Ferrari 312 P, you'll find me rather biased. For me this is both the best looking and best sounding sports prototype ever made by Ferrari. Yes, I know what some of you are thinking: ''You're forgetting about the 330 P4 and the 333 SP" (or the 212E Montagna, I'll add). I believe we've fallen into that situation where the best isn't objectively one or the other but the decision is more based on personal taste. And I have a soft spot for the shape of the 312 P over a 330 P4 just as I will never be able to put the mechanical sound of its 3.0-liter V12 above the more refined engine of the 333 SP. Going back to the video itself, it's not fresh footage from 2025 but something I kept in storage for a few years (don't ask me why.) and which comes from the 2022 Mugello Classic weekend by Peter Auto. Swiss racing driver, Remo Lips, and the guys of Edi Wyss Engineering (who managed the car back then) were kind enough for having me install a GoPro inside this jewel of a machine ahead of the first practice session on Friday. Sharing the car with Remo was 80-years-old, former British hillclimb champ and classic car racer David Franklin, who is actually the one behind the wheel in the on-board footage. Mr. Franklin has often been the one in charge of driving this car during races and events over the last ten years, and some of you may remember him for those impressive runs at the 2015 and 2016 Festival of Speed. Unfortunately in this video he only managed to complete three laps so he could have done much better with a few more available. On the other hand, the external scenes are a mix of two editions of Mugello Classic, the 2022 and the 2023 one, with Remo mainly behind the wheel. After boycotting sports car racing in 1968 to protest a rule change that banned their 4-litre 330 P4, Ferrari developed a 3000cc prototype in 1969, the 312 P, in order to race under the Group 6 rules (in which engines were restricted to three liters). It was hardly more than a 3-litre F1 Ferrari 312 with open Barchetta, and later the closed top Berlinetta. The first registered race was at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1969 where Ferrari fieled only one 312 P (chassis no. 0868). Mario Andretti got pole position, and with Chris Amon, he managed to finish second. This raised hopes for the future of the car but during the test weekend at Le Mans the 312 P (chassis no. 0870) was disappointing. It was clear that better aerodynamics with a closed coupe body were necessary. The car began to show its potential but during the season, the appearance of the Porsche 917 had made clear that only a similar new prototype-like 5-litre "sports car" would be able to challenge it and so all the budget was moved to the development of the 512S. At the end of the 1969 season the 312 Ps were sold to Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team. The one you see in this video is chassis 0872, the third and final 312 P produced. It was raced by N.A.R.T. until 1971 by which time it was fitted with a new Spyder body. After being restored and kept by Ferrari collector and racer Peter Sachs, a Swiss enthusiast bought the car and completely rebuilt it to racing standards. Nowadays the car can be transformed into both the Spyder and Coupé versions .
