Zu sehen sind unter anderem das außergewöhnlich aerodynamische Rovomobil aus Halle, der Trabant P610 als letzter ernsthafter Versuch eines echten Nachfolgers für den Trabant 601, frühe Elektrofahrzeuge wie der Elsist aus der Station Junger Techniker sowie das elegante Wartburg-355-Coupé. Jedes dieser Fahrzeuge steht für eine Idee, für Mut und für den Willen, trotz begrenzter Mittel neue Wege zu gehen. Doch diese Geschichte endet nicht mit dem Ende der DDR. Viele der Gedanken, Konzepte und technischen Ansätze überlebten die politische Zäsur von 1989. In den 1990er Jahren entstanden mit dem Hybrid-Van Uni 1 aus Sachsenring oder später mit dem Trabant NT moderne Fahrzeugkonzepte, die das geistige Erbe dieser Entwicklungsarbeit weiterführten. Auch sie blieben Prototypen – ehrgeizige Versuche, in einem völlig veränderten wirtschaftlichen Umfeld eine eigenständige automobile Zukunft zu gestalten. Diese Dokumentation ist kein nostalgischer Blick zurück und keine reine Technikschau. Sie erzählt von verpassten Chancen und politischen Entscheidungen, von Idealismus und Frustration, aber auch von Menschen, die sich nicht damit abfinden wollten, dass gute Ideen in Schubladen verschwinden.
