Prof. Dr. Tobias Hagen aims to close this gap with his research project. From a game-theoretic perspective, the search for a parking space is a good example of a strategic game. When multiple drivers simultaneously attempt to use a limited space (in this case, the route and the parking space), a game emerges in which the drivers must each make their own decisions without knowing exactly what the others will do. The explore-and-exploit model is a concept from decision theory and game theory that states that a player must trade off between exploring new options (exploration) and exploiting known options (exploitation). In the context of searching for a parking space, this could mean that a driver either continues searching for a better parking space (exploration) or uses the knowledge gained to select the next available parking space that is optimal from this perspective (exploitation). An interesting aspect of parking searches in the context of the explore-and-exploit model is that the costs of exploration (e.g., the additional time spent searching) can differ compared to the costs of exploitation (e.g., the higher price of a parking space in a parking garage). If the costs of exploration are low and the chances of finding a better parking space are high, it may make sense for a driver to continue searching and exploring.
