00:00:00
i just got tired of the blank walls on
00:00:02
my tiny apartment so today we're making
00:00:05
a bunch of picture frames that look
00:00:07
professional strong and beautiful
00:00:10

00:00:21
this episode is sponsored by rockler
00:00:23
woodworking hardware and all the tools
00:00:26
and accessories shown in this video will
00:00:28
be linked below
00:00:30
the first step on picture frame making
00:00:32
is to take the measurements of the
00:00:34
artworks and consider which type of
00:00:36
frame you want to make
00:00:38
the worksheet that i'm using here was
00:00:41
downloaded from michael um's website and
00:00:44
i've linked it below michael is an
00:00:46
awesome artist and has a couple videos
00:00:48
on this subject that are great to watch
00:00:50
too
00:00:53
like in any other project after
00:00:55
selecting the wood type for each frame i
00:00:58
got to prepping the stock
00:01:01
the table saw was the main tool used in
00:01:03
this project but there are tasks that
00:01:05
can easily be done with other tools
00:01:10
i wanted some of the frames to be
00:01:11
painted black and i thought they would
00:01:13
be cool to see and feel the wood grain
00:01:17
that's why i chose a species with an
00:01:19
open pore for those
00:01:28
so
00:01:33
[Music]
00:01:47
i only squared two faces for all the
00:01:49
lumber i didn't want to deal with tear
00:01:51
out on a thickness planer so i use the
00:01:53
table saw to when establishing square
00:01:56
and straight faces
00:02:21
i kept milling the wood strips in
00:02:23
sections always consulting the
00:02:25
worksheets
00:02:34
i chose scraps of high quality mdf that
00:02:37
happened to be colored to make some of
00:02:39
the frames the gray one will turn almost
00:02:42
black when finished and yellow one will
00:02:44
be painted white
00:02:46
i could then choose the best faces and
00:02:49
start making the rabbits
00:03:12
as you can see i opted for a boxy look
00:03:15
for all the frames i didn't want the
00:03:17
faces to be super wide and i tend to
00:03:19
prefer frames that have more volume kind
00:03:22
of like a museum box look
00:03:37
once all the rabbits were cut i could
00:03:39
move into cutting the miters for that i
00:03:42
chose my new rockler crosscut sled that
00:03:44
has this massive protractor i could
00:03:47
easily set it to perfect 45 degrees due
00:03:50
to its large scale
00:03:52
and clamped it firmly
00:04:13
the start block is crucial to make sure
00:04:15
that you cut the pieces to the exact
00:04:17
same length in pairs
00:04:25
[Music]
00:04:53
i can now start the glue up i wanted to
00:04:55
try the simplest method possible that
00:04:58
consists in applying tight pawn quick
00:05:00
and thick glue
00:05:01
to both miters and hand press them
00:05:04
firmly together
00:05:06
while holding a square for about 15
00:05:09
seconds
00:05:22
i glued two pieces at a time
00:05:25
and let them sit for five minutes before
00:05:27
going ahead and closing the rectangles
00:05:37
if your miters make a perfect 90 degree
00:05:39
angle this method truly works
00:05:45
for the bigger frames i applied a bit of
00:05:47
tape to the corner just for good measure
00:06:10
i wanted to use v-nails to reinforce the
00:06:13
miters and keep this project simple but
00:06:16
i ended up not using them because i read
00:06:18
that the nails should have at least
00:06:20
fifty to sixty percent of the molding
00:06:22
thickness since i ended up choosing box
00:06:25
style frames that are a lot thicker than
00:06:27
wider i opted for another root
00:06:30
reinforcing them with splines
00:06:35
i made this jig based on my columns
00:06:37
video and it worked really well
00:06:50
i totally forgot that i needed a flat
00:06:52
tooth plate to make the splines look
00:06:54
good but quickly realized that i didn't
00:06:57
have one the only option was to use one
00:07:00
of the blades from the dado set it was a
00:07:03
little thicker than the typical 3.2
00:07:05
millimeter kerf blades but it worked
00:07:08
just fine
00:07:18
[Music]
00:07:26
i cut the spline strips with this thin
00:07:29
rib jig from rockler the wood runs
00:07:31
against the ball bearing and you adjust
00:07:33
the fence after each strip is cut
00:07:50
i could then safely cut the little
00:07:52
splines with a small part sled i really
00:07:54
like this sled because the pieces fall
00:07:56
off to the right preventing them to heat
00:07:59
the blade once they're released from the
00:08:01
main stock sometimes small pieces fly
00:08:04
over the shop when using a regular slat
00:08:06
and i think this one makes the task a
00:08:08
lot safer
00:08:15
the splines were glued and pushed firmly
00:08:18
into the slots
00:08:20
make sure they are bottom out to avoid
00:08:22
any gaps in the final look
00:09:27
i trimmed up the splines with a flush
00:09:29
trimming saw and sanded the area right
00:09:32
away it seemed to go rather quickly
00:09:50
i could then rotate the frame and cut
00:09:52
the other half of the splines
00:09:54
i angled the cut towards the end and
00:09:56
went slowly to avoid breaking the fibers
00:09:59
in a sharp corner
00:10:10
so
00:10:14
[Music]
00:10:26
[Music]
00:10:29
wow
00:10:43
one of the large maple frames had a
00:10:44
little defect in one corner
00:10:47
so i decided to add a tiny chamfer
00:11:09
after tons of hand sanding it was time
00:11:11
to apply the finishes and achieve some
00:11:14
different looks
00:11:17
for the black ones i went with indian
00:11:20
ink first and hard black soil as a
00:11:22
protective finish
00:11:24
i chose indian ink because it is so thin
00:11:27
and opaque remember that i wanted the
00:11:30
wood grain texture to remain noticeable
00:11:44
the yellow mdf frame ended up
00:11:46
spray-painted flat white
00:11:57
and for the maple and walnut frames i
00:11:59
wanted to keep the natural look
00:12:02
so i finished them with a clear hard wax
00:12:04
oil
00:12:11
the same finish was applied to the gray
00:12:14
mdf frame as i knew that it would turn
00:12:16
it almost black
00:12:30
the last step before framing was to cut
00:12:33
the acrylic to the appropriate size for
00:12:35
each frame
00:12:36
i did that using a table saw blade
00:12:39
specifically designed for cutting
00:12:40
acrylic and plastics and i must tell you
00:12:43
that it makes all the difference
00:12:58
most of the prints and illustrations
00:13:00
were framed in a simple manner but i
00:13:03
made sure to get acid-free materials
00:13:05
such as foam core double-sided tape and
00:13:08
mounting board
00:13:10
this is important to prevent artworks
00:13:12
from getting damaged over time due to
00:13:15
any acids that might be present
00:13:18
in non-archival framing materials
00:13:25
to secure the contents i used this point
00:13:27
driver that i also got from rockler and
00:13:30
it worked really well at first i was
00:13:32
worried that the maple would be too hard
00:13:34
for it but the points were successfully
00:13:37
shot into the wood
00:13:48
i gave a thorough inspection before
00:13:50
closing each frame while searching for
00:13:52
those particles in some cases i had to
00:13:54
use a bit of tape between the glazing
00:13:57
and the artwork to get rid of the specs
00:14:09
the original motivation to make this
00:14:11
project now was to complete the new
00:14:13
black ball cabinet unit that i built on
00:14:16
the previous two videos i wanted to
00:14:18
integrate the universe print that i
00:14:20
screen printed some time ago and decided
00:14:23
to build a frame for it since i was
00:14:26
going to make that one i gathered some
00:14:28
prints and illustrations that i
00:14:30
collected over the years from friends
00:14:32
and artists that i like and put together
00:14:34
this project video
00:14:36
it was my first time making serious
00:14:38
frames
00:14:40
three of them were screaming for
00:14:42
something a little nicer so i tried
00:14:44
float mounting
00:14:46
i cut strips of foam core and stuck them
00:14:49
to the inside of the frame with
00:14:51
acid-free double-sided tape
00:14:54
the glazing will be stuck between the
00:14:56
frame lip and the foam core strips
00:15:00
i then mounted the art pieces to a
00:15:02
backing board that will create the
00:15:04
floating look
00:15:29
i repeated the process with black foam
00:15:31
core for the other two black frames
00:15:35
to prevent dust from entering the frame
00:15:38
i taped the bags with framing paper tape
00:16:01
so
00:16:31
last thing to do was to install the
00:16:33
sawtooth hangers and a couple of
00:16:36
silicone bumpers to help position the
00:16:38
frame in the wall as well as keeping the
00:16:40
gap consistent all around
00:16:46
[Music]
00:16:56
and here they are i'm very happy about
00:16:58
the way they turned out the universe
00:17:00
print looks awesome in the recessed wall
00:17:03
cabinet on my studio and i'm super
00:17:05
excited to finally hang these around the
00:17:08
tiny apartment walls
00:17:10
i love the black finish on these
00:17:13
although making the splines was not my
00:17:15
initial idea i really like them as well
00:17:18
as this white pristine frame
00:17:21
this was a fun project even though it
00:17:23
took longer than expected but that's
00:17:26
always the case right
00:17:27
