00:00:07
Uh, hi. I'm Paul Reed. I'm the writer
00:00:10
and narrative designer for DCO. I've
00:00:12
been on the team twice. I was on the
00:00:15
original team back in the day for
00:00:17
launch. I am now on the team now and
00:00:18
I've been on for going on two years.
00:00:20
>> Hi. Yes, I'm Glitter. I have worked on
00:00:23
DCO for 9ine years and I'm the lead
00:00:25
character artist.
00:00:27
>> Hi, I am Aaron. I am the QA lead. I have
00:00:31
also, this is my second stint on DCO. I
00:00:33
was also here before launch I think for
00:00:35
like a year and a half and have been
00:00:39
here now six, seven years. What's up
00:00:44
gamers? Uh my name is Chad aka Red 5. I
00:00:47
am a lead designer on DCO. I've been
00:00:49
here since 2018, January of 2018, so
00:00:52
right about the anniversary. Uh I've
00:00:53
been here for eight years.
00:00:55
>> I'm Cardboard. I've been working on DCOO
00:00:58
since August 2021. I'm a systems
00:01:00
designer.
00:01:01
>> My name is Karp. I'm a gameplay engineer
00:01:04
for DCUO. I've been with the company for
00:01:07
24 years and I've been on DCUO for 19 of
00:01:12
those years.
00:01:13
>> Hi,
00:01:15
I'm Magnanimus and I am the UIUX
00:01:19
designer and I have been working for
00:01:22
DCUO for a year and a half. um summer
00:01:25
2024. Wow.
00:01:27
>> And I'm Volira. I'm the community
00:01:29
manager for DC Universe online. Um I
00:01:32
have been with the company for a year as
00:01:34
of two days ago, which is really
00:01:36
exciting and I'm really happy to be
00:01:38
here.
00:01:39
>> I am Scott and I am the art director at
00:01:42
DCO and I have been the art director for
00:01:45
almost 2 years.
00:01:50
For me, I think it was all of the
00:01:52
content that uh came out after launch
00:01:55
because I was on the team until launch,
00:01:57
then went to work for other people and
00:02:00
then I came back and in coming back I'm
00:02:03
like, "Well, I better see what they've
00:02:04
been doing for the last 10 some years."
00:02:07
And just going, "Oh, hey, that power set
00:02:10
wasn't in the game when I was on the
00:02:11
team. That content wasn't in the game.
00:02:13
That raid wasn't in the and just going
00:02:16
back and seeing all the new stuff, all
00:02:19
the new powers and how the powers had
00:02:21
changed. Like Earth really changed when
00:02:23
I was at the time when I was home. But
00:02:25
when I think about like how DC has
00:02:27
changed over the years, I like do this
00:02:28
weird categorizing thing in my mind.
00:02:31
Like I think of it in sort of eras like
00:02:33
kind of analogous to comic book eras,
00:02:35
right? Like you have like the golden age
00:02:36
and the silver age. I think of like the
00:02:38
classic era of content structure like
00:02:40
when the game launched and you had the
00:02:41
early raids like Sunstone Fortress and
00:02:43
how that shifted into like war of uh
00:02:46
monthly content for a short while which
00:02:47
is like kind of the silver age and then
00:02:49
you've got like what I consider the um
00:02:51
the modern era that comes after that
00:02:52
where like all of a sudden now the
00:02:54
content becomes more formalized. It
00:02:55
becomes like an open world and like a
00:02:57
solo and alert and a raid. Um and we did
00:03:02
that all the way through I guess episode
00:03:04
48. I think we that was sort of what I
00:03:07
consider to be the modern era and and
00:03:08
and we built it all along those specs
00:03:10
and everything, you know, like we had
00:03:12
like a pattern and now we're in what I
00:03:14
consider to be the the post-modern era,
00:03:16
which is where it's a lot like the
00:03:17
modern era, but now we've got like more
00:03:19
of a narrative flow line that goes
00:03:21
through. And so when you go to Cosnia,
00:03:23
you experience the story line that like
00:03:25
walks you through the open world and
00:03:27
like kind of gives context to all the
00:03:28
different parts of it. We've done that
00:03:30
for in moving forward for all of our
00:03:32
stuff and it's created a more like
00:03:33
cohesive narrative that I'm really
00:03:35
enjoying.
00:03:38
>> It's very exciting to to join the team.
00:03:41
Uh I think there's something really
00:03:42
special when a game has been running
00:03:45
over a decade. Uh the players really
00:03:48
love the universe they're in, the
00:03:50
content, how cool their characters look,
00:03:53
and and I think it's it's amazing just
00:03:56
to be able to hop in and be a part of
00:03:57
that. So, I was super excited to join
00:04:00
DCO, like knowing that it's had uh 15
00:04:02
years now of history. As a community
00:04:05
manager, um it's actually really
00:04:08
exciting to see uh what kind of
00:04:10
community was already in place when I
00:04:12
started. Um and what kind of community
00:04:16
grew with the game and I feel very very
00:04:19
lucky to have the community that we
00:04:22
have. Everybody's been really friendly
00:04:23
and nice and excited for the changes
00:04:26
that I've been implementing. Um, and so,
00:04:29
so yeah, it was a little nerve-wracking
00:04:31
cuz it's been a longestablished game,
00:04:34
but it's been super uh a super rewarding
00:04:38
feeling uh joining a team that has such
00:04:41
a a established uh history.
00:04:45
>> Like when I think about my favorite
00:04:46
thing I've ever put in the game, it's
00:04:48
the smallest to most incon consequential
00:04:50
thing. It's Joker's crowbar. Like for
00:04:53
episode 35, it was like the first metal
00:04:55
when we were doing the OP item. We put
00:04:57
it in like a catalyst frame and the
00:04:58
artist made it was coming out of the
00:04:59
frame and I got to write the tool tip
00:05:01
for it and I put something that I think
00:05:02
was hilarious. It was something like
00:05:03
crowbars are great at making openings.
00:05:05
This one created an opening for Jason
00:05:07
Todd or something like that, which yeah,
00:05:10
I don't know. I don't know if anybody
00:05:12
ever read that and chuckled, but I laugh
00:05:13
every time I think about it. Speaking of
00:05:15
Batman who laughs, my favorite um is
00:05:19
always going to be villains. And I loved
00:05:21
making Batman who laughs and Grail. They
00:05:24
were my two favorite villains that I've
00:05:27
made so far.
00:05:29
Energ. But
00:05:32
allies, that's my that's my bread and
00:05:33
butter is I make allies. Um and that's
00:05:36
kind of how we're each system designer
00:05:37
is kind of like like we we cross over
00:05:39
stuff, but we often have like a system
00:05:40
that we're kind of like the wheelhouse
00:05:42
for. Um, but one time we decided to
00:05:44
shake things up and have it where we all
00:05:47
switched like we all made each other's
00:05:49
thing. So like the a couple of the
00:05:52
allies like weren't made by me. It was
00:05:53
made by another system designer. Um, and
00:05:55
I had to make an artifact which I had
00:05:58
never made before. How do you do this?
00:06:00
What's going on here? And and uh I mean
00:06:03
it all still worked. And I'm I'm proud
00:06:05
of of the artifact that I made, the
00:06:06
brand of heay artifact. And I'm proud of
00:06:08
the allies that that came out then. The
00:06:10
what was it? I think the ones I didn't
00:06:12
make were it was Zatana, Zod, and Blue
00:06:14
Beetle. So, I'm I'm part of that whole
00:06:15
that whole Switcheroo thing we did. It
00:06:17
was kind of fun.
00:06:18
>> The Smallville
00:06:20
raid that I worked on where we had, you
00:06:22
know, everybody in Kansas being turned
00:06:24
into a doomsday. And at the very end,
00:06:27
the big finale at the Kent farm, you got
00:06:31
to team up with either the the Legion or
00:06:34
the JLA and throw down with Doomsday.
00:06:38
And it's really old content and I don't
00:06:42
know how fondly other people remember
00:06:44
Bat, but I still have a really like
00:06:47
nostalgic point in my heart about that.
00:06:51
I think that the the thing that was the
00:06:55
wow moment that made me really really
00:06:56
like we are in this world was we do key
00:06:59
art now and we're really our key art is
00:07:00
focused on making it look like comic
00:07:02
book covers. And we went up to DC and we
00:07:05
asked them, "Hey, can we put a version
00:07:08
of it on the back of your cover?" And
00:07:10
they said, "Yes." And I was like, "Oh my
00:07:12
gosh." So, we did we did Harley Quinn
00:07:15
versus Apocalypse and we really did this
00:07:17
style to make sure it looked like uh a
00:07:19
comic book art. We had a fantastic
00:07:21
artist that we worked with. And then DC
00:07:23
sent us a version of this comic. And I
00:07:26
found out it was like on the back of
00:07:28
like I don't know like 20 20 different
00:07:30
comics. and flipped it over and there it
00:07:34
was. There's our comic book art on the
00:07:36
back of an actual comic book that and
00:07:38
and then when you flip it over there's
00:07:39
Batman and Robin and then you flip back
00:07:41
there's our comic book art and it's like
00:07:43
oh my gosh we are in this world we we
00:07:46
exist and we are here and that was
00:07:48
really really exciting. So I think that
00:07:50
that was the first time I was like holy
00:07:52
cow we are in this universe. My most
00:07:54
exciting moment uh realizing that I was
00:07:56
part of this legacy uh was being in the
00:08:00
credits of a video game for the first
00:08:02
time. Um I've been doing community
00:08:05
management uh for going on 7 years now
00:08:09
and this is the first time I've been in
00:08:11
the credits. So that was really
00:08:13
exciting. and a player actually took a
00:08:15
screenshot and sent me um the picture of
00:08:18
it and I had no idea and I had just
00:08:20
started here and so it was just a really
00:08:22
nice welcome to the team and I really
00:08:24
felt a part of the legacy of DCO and
00:08:27
what we're doing here and and it was fun
00:08:30
to to copy the screenshot and send it
00:08:33
>> send it to your parents like look at me.
00:08:36
>> Yeah. So that was the the first moment
00:08:39
where it was really sinking in for me.
00:08:45
It's one of our first April Fool jokes
00:08:46
jokes. People April Fool's people were
00:08:48
always asking for a unicorn trinket,
00:08:50
which I suppose, and I wasn't here for
00:08:52
this. This is like secondhand new
00:08:54
stories I heard from people. Um, but
00:08:57
they were asking for a unicorn trinket
00:08:58
that I guess would just summon a unicorn
00:09:00
to fight for you or something. And, you
00:09:02
know, the devs are like, "Oh, haha,
00:09:03
we're not going to do that." But then as
00:09:04
a joke, they did make one. Um, but it's
00:09:07
not a trinket. It's a unicorn whose name
00:09:08
is Trinket and it's a balloon that goes
00:09:10
in your base. So, that was a that was a
00:09:12
fun one.
00:09:13
>> Uh, they're also uh because Player Base
00:09:16
has lots of uh tinfoil theory hats, we
00:09:18
we they actually made for April Fools,
00:09:20
they made a a tin foil hat.
00:09:23
>> That's right.
00:09:24
>> That the players can wear.
00:09:25
>> Certainly still exists.
00:09:26
>> And it still exists.
00:09:28
>> Yep.
00:09:29
>> Yep. >> Titanic Trinton. What did we do with
00:09:31
Titanic Trinton? What was that one? We
00:09:32
had like one where you can shift into
00:09:34
him and then get a bunch of feats. Like,
00:09:36
do you think that's him?
00:09:37
>> Players love Titanic Trenton. So, we
00:09:39
made like Yeah. form change where you
00:09:41
turn into him for April Fools. Yeah. And
00:09:42
go do things, get feats.
00:09:44
>> That was actually a player suggestion
00:09:45
during Extra Life.
00:09:46
>> Really?
00:09:47
>> Yeah. Nice.
00:09:48
>> What the assistant designer that made
00:09:49
that uh Yeah, he had a blast doing that.
00:09:52
So So it's it's it's fun for them and it
00:09:54
was fun for for us.
00:09:55
>> Is that the one where you get the pizza
00:09:57
material? Oh, I love that material.
00:09:58
>> They get the pizza material,
00:10:02
>> honestly. Just being a part of a very
00:10:05
beloved universe. just to be part of
00:10:07
that, to be part of the journey, to be
00:10:09
part of the history. Um, just to be able
00:10:13
to sprinkle in my my pixels,
00:10:16
you know, and and I I get to say I'm I'm
00:10:19
part of it, you know, and something
00:10:21
bigger than me and and uh I'm part of a
00:10:24
team that um really loves this game and
00:10:27
really loves DC comics and and DCUO and
00:10:31
just everything about it, you know. And
00:10:33
I feel like when when people are really
00:10:36
passionate about what they do, you can
00:10:38
feel that, you know, there's there's a
00:10:39
synergy there. And I think that can be
00:10:41
felt through our work and, you know, how
00:10:43
we just um yeah, connect and yeah, work
00:10:47
together. I think I think too just the
00:10:50
idea of getting to do something that at
00:10:52
least for me I realize I'm very lucky to
00:10:56
be able to do this and the fact that we
00:10:58
get to do something that we love. You
00:11:00
know, yes, we get to do it for DC which
00:11:02
is wonderful because it makes it really
00:11:04
easy because we have so much stuff that
00:11:05
we can work with, but it's, you know, we
00:11:08
get to make games for a living and I I
00:11:11
don't that is every day I realize I'm
00:11:13
like, dude, we could be doing something
00:11:15
really boring right now, but we're not.
00:11:17
and we all get along like so well and we
00:11:21
genuinely have so much fun and even when
00:11:24
we're up against crazy deadlines like
00:11:26
we're all just like smiling together
00:11:29
like getting through it and like it's so
00:11:31
satisfying once it's like
00:11:33
>> done. Yeah,
00:11:34
>> for sure. >> Mhm.
00:11:36
>> A Should we hug?
00:11:37
>> Yeah.
00:11:38
>> Yes. Okay, let's try just a little.
00:11:42
>> You may know from our marketplace, some
00:11:45
of our featured items in the marketplace
00:11:46
have large banners that uh kind of show
00:11:49
off what the item is. So, I made a
00:11:53
temporary banner. Um, and since this
00:11:56
video is edited, I'm going to assume
00:11:58
that you're going to put put the banner
00:12:00
right here when I send it. That was a
00:12:03
thing until the first time it got used
00:12:06
and then somebody said, "No, you can't
00:12:07
do that.
00:12:08
You can't use that guy, right?
00:12:10
>> So, I guess there there's one we have.
00:12:13
It's an internal testing tool. Uh, but
00:12:15
when it first came out, um, they there
00:12:18
wasn't an icon for it. We didn't really
00:12:19
have icons for it. So, I guess for some
00:12:22
reason someone had made a banana icon,
00:12:26
but so that became our thing that did a
00:12:28
lot of damage was the banana icon. So,
00:12:31
we're like, "Hey, you're going to go
00:12:32
you're going to banana the level." Cuz
00:12:34
that was what it was. Now, now it's a
00:12:36
remote, but we still call it the banana.
00:12:38
Like, oh, it went through in bananas.
00:12:40
>> I didn't realize there used to be a banana for that. I thought it was always
00:12:42
just a yellow remote control and people
00:12:43
called it the banana.
00:12:44
>> It was actually a banana. There wasn't
00:12:46
an icon for it.
00:12:47
>> The icon for the ability, not the item,
00:12:49
but the ability is still a banana.
00:12:51
>> Oh, nice. That's amazing.
00:12:53
>> One of our incredible character artists,
00:12:57
um, Jazzy, anytime she is testing
00:13:00
things, they always have a mustache.
00:13:04
That is her like that's how you know
00:13:06
that is a character that is being tested
00:13:08
or something that's being tested is
00:13:10
because she has given them a mustache
00:13:13
>> and that manifested on the kite.
00:13:17
>> One of the designers went on like
00:13:19
sbatical was away for a long time. They
00:13:21
came back from their vacation office was
00:13:23
filled with inflatables. They went to
00:13:26
the kitchen and got a knife and started
00:13:29
stabbing all of the inflatable balls. Um
00:13:32
there is still a box that has inflatable
00:13:34
balls and I uh JL and I have actually
00:13:37
gotten red five. Uh it was he had gone
00:13:42
on a vacation and we printed up a sign
00:13:45
and it said uh we had a ball. Wish you
00:13:47
were here and we filled up his uh chair
00:13:50
and and desk and all of that with with
00:13:51
all the inflatable balls that we could
00:13:53
find. >> Maybe you don't realize this. It was me
00:13:55
who did the inflatable ball prank.
00:13:56
>> Oh, was it?
00:13:57
>> It was me. Yeah. I thought and the
00:13:59
creative director was the one I think
00:14:00
who slashed them all and I was like,
00:14:02
"Oh, she sounds mad. Am I fired?"
00:14:06
>> Oh my gosh. Here it is. DC. They They
00:14:08
made these for the water power release
00:14:11
to market it cuz what what what says
00:14:13
water powers more than a uh DC Universe
00:14:15
online branded beach ball. Fun for the
00:14:17
whole family.
00:14:18
>> I'm taking one of these home. Uh when
00:14:21
our audio team, audio director is in
00:14:24
need of either just sound effects or
00:14:26
temporary voices um before they get
00:14:28
actual actors in, they will ask the team
00:14:32
at large
00:14:34
to come in and record uh either
00:14:36
temporary voices or sound effects. It
00:14:38
was very very common for launch. We're
00:14:40
all just sitting here working, minding
00:14:42
our minding our own businesses. we get
00:14:43
an email saying, "Okay, we need cat
00:14:46
sound effects for Teik."
00:14:50
Um, does anybody want to come and like
00:14:53
audition for cat sound effects? And this
00:14:57
was a very reasonable thing. Some number
00:14:59
of people
00:15:01
signed up for this and we have an audio
00:15:03
booth here in the studio and we would go
00:15:06
in and we had like this list of cat
00:15:08
sounds that we needed. They were like
00:15:09
combat combat cat sounds. um kind of
00:15:12
like what would be dialogue cat sounds
00:15:14
exactly right
00:15:16
>> and we would all do this and uh our
00:15:18
audio director would give us direction
00:15:20
on this like okay that sounds good you
00:15:21
know do a little bit more like this so
00:15:23
we all we all did that we were waiting
00:15:25
to hear the results of like who had the
00:15:26
honor of being the the teal voice
00:15:30
and you know by that time it was coming
00:15:32
around to like I mean it was close to
00:15:33
like Christmas November and uh another
00:15:36
thing that they do around here which is
00:15:37
very nice is they will come they will
00:15:38
sometimes take us to go see
00:15:42
DC movies. So, we would go to take us
00:15:44
all to the theater and we were all sat
00:15:46
down. We were looking forward uh to a a
00:15:48
lovely day at the movies and the lights
00:15:51
dim and normally where you would see the
00:15:54
previews of the movie. Instead, what you
00:15:57
saw was the video of everybody that had
00:16:02
done a cat sound.
00:16:05
So, there was no auditions for Tele.
00:16:10
There was no temporary sound effects for
00:16:13
this cat. They already had that in the
00:16:15
bag or whatever. This was all just a
00:16:17
prank to get everybody on camera making
00:16:21
weird cat sounds. And what I really hope
00:16:24
doesn't happen right now is we cut to a
00:16:26
clip of that video.
00:16:32
In a universe governed by magic,
00:16:35
fantastic beasts have lost their voices.
00:16:39
A group of intrepid adventurers band
00:16:41
together, united by a common goal
00:16:44
to restore the voice to a boy's
00:16:47
familiar.
00:16:50
>> So, let's try let's try a couple of
00:16:52
growls first just to sort of rough you
00:16:54
up. >> All right. Kind of like the old cat
00:16:56
warning growl like the
00:16:58
>> Let's see what you got.
00:16:59
>> All right. How about uh
00:17:09
thanks for supporting the game for this
00:17:10
long. Uh we can't really make this game
00:17:12
if people aren't supporting it. And so
00:17:14
you're the reason we're all here and
00:17:15
still have jobs and are still making
00:17:16
this great game. And uh we're happy to
00:17:18
be here. We're happy to make games for
00:17:19
you. And yeah, that's all I've got to
00:17:22
say.
00:17:23
>> I just want to say thanks for being a
00:17:24
great community. Like I find our
00:17:26
community to be super helpful. My um my
00:17:28
some of my family members started
00:17:29
playing when I worked here and they were
00:17:31
just like Chad came from some other
00:17:32
game. Your community, they helped me
00:17:34
through things. They help me do feats.
00:17:35
They help me figure stuff out. Uh when I
00:17:37
play, you guys carry me through raids.
00:17:39
You help me with open world bosses. Um
00:17:40
like everyone is super friendly and we
00:17:43
couldn't do this without you and you
00:17:44
guys make the game better. So, thank you
00:17:46
for that.
00:17:47
>> I I just wanted to take a moment to say
00:17:51
truly how much I appreciate all of you.
00:17:54
Um, you make me smile every day, like
00:17:57
popping into Discord or reading your
00:18:00
comments on social media or sending me a
00:18:03
DM being like, "Wouldn't this be cool if
00:18:05
this could happen?" And your passion for
00:18:08
this game is truly what makes DCO
00:18:13
DCO. Um, we could pump as much content
00:18:16
out as we want to, uh, but a game isn't
00:18:18
a game without its community. And we
00:18:20
have the best community that I have ever
00:18:23
experienced. um in my professional years
00:18:26
in gaming. So, I just want to say happy
00:18:28
anniversary. Thank you for being you. Um
00:18:31
and I can't wait to spend so much more
00:18:33
time with all of you.
00:18:35
>> Yeah,
00:18:38
>> let's do this, guys.
00:18:40
>> Oh, that was that was amazing.
