I can tell you this. These were bad
00:00:01
people.
00:00:03
>> That was a bad group of, as I say,
00:00:05
ombres. That was a bad group. When you
00:00:08
look at them and you look at the the
00:00:10
crimes that they've committed, [music]
00:00:11
you take a look. Uh you don't get any
00:00:14
tougher. You don't get worse than that.
00:00:16
>> We're going to get approval hopefully
00:00:18
[music] to get them the hell out of our
00:00:20
country along with others. Let them be
00:00:21
brought to a foreign land and maintained
00:00:23
by others for a very [music] small fee
00:00:25
as opposed to be maintained in our jails
00:00:27
for massive amounts of money, including
00:00:29
[music] the private prison companies
00:00:31
that charge us a fortune. You know, let
00:00:33
them be brought out [music] of our
00:00:34
country and let them live there for a
00:00:35
while. Let's see how they like it.
00:00:37
Interest in El Salvador's notorious
00:00:39
maximum security prison, CCOT, is
00:00:42
spiking once again after CBS News yanked
00:00:45
a 60-minute segment on Venezuelan
00:00:47
migrants sent there by the Trump
00:00:49
administration. The unusual move came
00:00:51
just hours before the story was
00:00:53
scheduled to air. While the network is
00:00:55
claiming that the last minute switch was
00:00:56
because the segment needed additional
00:00:58
reporting, the report's correspondent,
00:01:00
Sharon Alfonsi, is telling a different
00:01:02
story. She quickly fired off an email to
00:01:04
fellow correspondents, alleging that the
00:01:06
network's new boss, Barry Weiss, quote,
00:01:09
spiked our story for politically
00:01:11
motivated reasons. The segment in
00:01:13
question was supposed to feature
00:01:14
Alfons's interviews with Deportiz who
00:01:17
experienced brutal and torturous
00:01:19
conditions at the Hellhole prison after
00:01:21
being sent there by the Trump
00:01:22
administration. But what is SECOT and
00:01:25
what makes it El Salvador's most
00:01:26
infamous clink? Built in 2023 nearly 50
00:01:30
mi from El Salvador's capital, SECOT or
00:01:33
terrorism confinement center is the
00:01:36
largest prison facility in Central
00:01:37
America.
00:01:39
Spanning eight pavilions which can hold
00:01:41
up to 40,000 inmates. The prison has
00:01:43
been internationally known for its
00:01:45
horrendous conditions with overcrowded
00:01:47
quarters where groups of inmates are
00:01:49
crammed into group cells with up to 70
00:01:52
prisoners for nearly 24 hours a day and
00:01:55
where inmates are lucky if they get a
00:01:56
metal bunk to sleep on. It's tense and
00:01:59
uncomfortable. But here, officials say
00:02:02
comfort isn't meant to exist.
00:02:05
>> There's no mattresses. There's no
00:02:06
sheets. You've got a toilet over here
00:02:08
for them to go to the bathroom. You've
00:02:09
got this basin here that they use to
00:02:10
bathe themselves. And then you can see
00:02:12
there there's a barrel of water that
00:02:15
they can drink from.
00:02:16
>> The food provided is minimal. Only beans
00:02:18
and pasta. And rival gang members
00:02:20
routinely fight to the death over food
00:02:22
and water. While lights remain on 24
00:02:25
hours per day. Life in the prison means
00:02:28
never seeing sunlight or members of the
00:02:30
outside world. Prisoners have no access
00:02:33
to books or letters from family. There
00:02:35
are gyms, break rooms, and board games
00:02:37
at SECOT, but those are for guards only.
00:02:40
Since El Salvador's president, Naiba
00:02:42
Boulli, cracked down on the country's
00:02:44
gangs, SECOT has housed some of the
00:02:46
country's most prolific killers and
00:02:48
gangsters.
00:02:49
>> The facility is like nothing I've ever
00:02:52
seen in my life, and I've had the
00:02:53
opportunity to visit other areas in the
00:02:56
world, other prisons in the world. This
00:02:58
is highly organized. These people are
00:03:00
detained. The US showed early interest
00:03:02
in SECOT in July 2024 when then
00:03:05
Representative Matt Gates visited the
00:03:06
prison and gave it a glowing review for
00:03:09
the way it handled criminals.
00:03:10
>> There's a lot more discipline [music]
00:03:12
in this prison than we see in a lot of
00:03:14
the prisons in the United States. And uh
00:03:17
[music] there are a lot more murderers
00:03:18
here. The people here have been doing a
00:03:21
lot of killing. And in the United
00:03:22
States, you get a mix in prison of
00:03:24
people who've done a variety of things.
00:03:26
But this is a concentrated effort to
00:03:28
solve what was a terrible problem for
00:03:31
the people of El Salvador. And so this
00:03:33
is the solution. The solution [music] is
00:03:35
to separate the killers from the people
00:03:37
who want to grow in their [music] life
00:03:40
and do more things for their neighbors
00:03:42
and for their country. In February,
00:03:44
Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with
00:03:46
Buchelli to broker a deal in which the
00:03:48
El Salvadorian leader agreed to house
00:03:50
convicted US citizens or deported
00:03:52
criminal illegal migrants of any
00:03:54
nationality into Secot. Blly revealed
00:03:57
the first set of flights to SECOT
00:03:58
included 238 members of the Venezuelan
00:04:01
prison gang Trende Aragua as well as at
00:04:04
least 21 members of MS-13. The
00:04:07
deportations came just hours after US
00:04:09
District Judge James Booseberg [music]
00:04:11
temporarily blocked the Trump
00:04:13
administration from invoking the 18th
00:04:15
century Alien Enemies Act to swiftly
00:04:17
boost the gangbangers from the country
00:04:19
without a formal hearing. Trump's
00:04:21
borders are Tom H. Home. Homeman
00:04:23
defended the president's actions as
00:04:24
quote the right thing.
00:04:26
>> The people people of this country
00:04:28
mandated President Trump deal with the
00:04:29
border crisis, deal with illegal
00:04:31
immigration, and deal with illegal alien
00:04:32
crime. And that's exactly what we did.
00:04:34
We removed terrorists. That should be a
00:04:36
celebration. We removed terrorists from
00:04:38
this country. I stand by what the
00:04:39
president did. I support 100%.
00:04:41
>> Since then, the conditions at the
00:04:42
notorious prison have continued to come
00:04:44
under scrutiny, as has the Trump
00:04:46
administration's decision to send
00:04:47
violent gangbangers there, including
00:04:50
some without trial. Among them was Kilar
00:04:53
Orego Garcia, who was sent there
00:04:55
initially under the Immigration and
00:04:56
Nationality Act despite a 2019 court
00:04:59
order blocking him from being sent there
00:05:01
over concerns he could face gang
00:05:03
violence.
