Am Anfang war alles anders. Deutschland hatte Polen, Frankreich und halb Europa in Rekordzeit erobert. Nur Großbritannien leistete Widerstand. Mit diesem Schwung entschloss sich Hitler, die UdSSR anzugreifen, in der Erwartung eines schnellen Sieges. Doch der Winter, das Terrain und die Rote Armee stoppten den Vormarsch. Moskau fiel nicht, und die Frontlinie begann sich zurückzuziehen. Es folgte ein ständiger, langer und blutiger Rückzug, der in den Straßen Berlins endete. Während Stalin alles auf diese Stadt ausrichtete, überzeugt davon, dass die Kontrolle der Hauptstadt die nachfolgende Ordnung definieren würde, versank Berlin in Ruinen, Stille und Resignation.
