00:00:29
all right welcome back to Chicago cars
00:00:30
direct whatever you're doing right now
00:00:32
stop take the next few minutes with us
00:00:35
because we're going to spend some time
00:00:36
with a really amazing car this is a 2007
00:00:39
Porsche 911 GT3
00:00:44
[Music]
00:01:01
uh as the rear engine is mounted in the
00:01:03
GT3 you're going to find it back here so
00:01:05
uh it's a 3.8 L Flat 6 engine now uh
00:01:08
it's naturally aspirated it is not a
00:01:09
turbocharged engine however even in
00:01:11
natural tune uh it still makes 415 horse
00:01:14
uh the GT3 really is the race spec for
00:01:17
this car there's no automatic
00:01:18
transmission available it's only the
00:01:19
six-speed manual so this car obviously
00:01:21
has that it's a rear wheel drive it's
00:01:22
not one of the career 4 models but uh
00:01:25
definitely one of the most capable and
00:01:27
one of the most race ready out of the
00:01:28
factory cars uh but still has a
00:01:30
reliability of a 911 uh I have to say
00:01:33
it's very it's rare that I'm uh at a
00:01:36
loss for words or feel so blessed to be
00:01:37
able to drive a car but uh I have not
00:01:38
been behind the wheel of this yet uh
00:01:40
we'll take it for a spin it's it's cold
00:01:42
out in Chicago today so we're only going
00:01:44
to do a demonstration ride but uh I have
00:01:45
not driven a 997 GT3 yet so uh very
00:01:48
impressive and looking forward to
00:01:50
it in the front you still have the uh
00:01:53
traditional 911 trunk boot Bonnet pick
00:01:55
your name whatever uh but in here you do
00:01:58
have your traditional uh storage area
00:02:00
I've got the full set of books here from
00:02:01
Porsche uh as well as the Porsche floor
00:02:05
mats but take a look in there it's good
00:02:09
size and under the floorboard you'll
00:02:11
find the air compressor as well as your
00:02:13
gauge there and the other assorted stuff
00:02:15
including your wheel lock and then right
00:02:17
here you're going to find the DVD drive
00:02:18
for the navigation system in
00:02:21
dash show you the condition of the car
00:02:23
there's nothing to note on it uh there's
00:02:24
not a blemish to show uh the one thing
00:02:26
that they did modify from the factory uh
00:02:28
you can see this is the 3M clear bra
00:02:31
covering uh that goes across the entire
00:02:33
front of the car but all original this
00:02:34
is atlas gray uh this is the color I
00:02:37
would order my own in by the way this is
00:02:38
my favorite color on this car uh look at
00:02:41
that front air dam it's very similar to
00:02:42
how the turbo is you don't have the LEDs
00:02:44
here but uh low front air dam now
00:02:46
there's a couple of Nixon chips along
00:02:47
here and I would say that's a flaw but
00:02:50
the thing is that that's exactly what
00:02:51
it's designed to do is to protect the
00:02:53
lower part of the nose there and uh that
00:02:57
can easily be replaced that's not an
00:02:58
issue uh over here you're going to find
00:02:59
the the GT3 wheel this is GT3 spec it is
00:03:01
an 18-in wheel uh on the front here
00:03:03
you're going to find a
00:03:06
235 35 zr18 uh these are pelli P0 uh
00:03:11
Corsa tires Corsa meaning race uh those
00:03:14
probably have better than 80% on the
00:03:15
front but the reflection down the
00:03:17
driver's side is perfect uh it does have
00:03:19
the uh 3M here as well which comes from
00:03:21
the factory but that is a cutout that is
00:03:23
made to protect the wide and rear end of
00:03:25
this car cuz the hips are a little bit
00:03:26
bigger uh and the reason they are is
00:03:28
because they have to accommodate these
00:03:29
uh p z courses on the rear but these are
00:03:32
30530 zr18 man 305s that's huge but I
00:03:36
guess this really is a a race car uh
00:03:39
coming around to the rear you can see
00:03:40
the GT3 spec Wing GT3 badging uh twin
00:03:44
outlet center exhaust which is
00:03:45
indicative you do have a couple cooling
00:03:47
ducks on the side here that are
00:03:49
exclusive for the GT3 I think you
00:03:51
probably get those on the GT2 as well
00:03:52
but still have yet to see one of those
00:03:54
in person uh and then on the rear here
00:03:56
obviously the wheel Red Cross drill
00:03:57
rotor or Red caler Cross Dr rotor all
00:03:59
the way around uh really a road goinging
00:04:02
race car but uh we'll show you inside
00:04:06
here you're going to see the uh got
00:04:07
suede inserts along with leather on the
00:04:08
surrounds but I mean that suede is so
00:04:10
clean you can see my fingertips just run
00:04:11
right through it there pretty crazy
00:04:13
beyond that I mean it really is a
00:04:14
traditional 9911 great step in and the
00:04:17
one like the one way I like to really
00:04:18
describe these cars is you know when
00:04:20
you're behind the wheel of it you don't
00:04:21
really realize you almost forget that
00:04:22
you're behind the wheel of a such an
00:04:24
exotic superar but you know this is
00:04:25
definitely one of the fastest on the RAC
00:04:27
trck for any road-going car um and this
00:04:29
interior interor doesn't disappoint you
00:04:30
great alcanta steering wheel part of the
00:04:32
GT3 you also get the gray face Tech Alo
00:04:35
it's part of the GT3 uh got the control
00:04:37
here for the Xenon up front you do have
00:04:38
Xenon
00:04:40
headlamps this is probably one of the
00:04:42
most focused driving positions you can
00:04:43
get uh especially from a race car
00:04:45
perspective uh you can see the fenders
00:04:47
in the front the actually the headlamp
00:04:49
housings essentially act as the uh
00:04:51
fenders but talk about placing the car
00:04:53
you tend to dance the 911 uh rather than
00:04:55
drive it by principal meaning with that
00:04:57
rear engine you kind of have to drive
00:04:58
the car as a as a pendulum but uh once
00:05:01
you get the art of the dance down I mean
00:05:02
these cars are probably some of the most
00:05:03
rewarding and uh I'd say challenging but
00:05:07
the thing is is that it takes a certain
00:05:08
degree to learn it uh but the challenge
00:05:10
is really the payoff uh when you learn
00:05:12
to drive these cars cuz they are amazing
00:05:14
but uh as I said awesome layout in the
00:05:15
gauges here uh really clear set you do
00:05:17
have a trip computer in here which will
00:05:20
also give you some navigation
00:05:21
instructions you got your tire pressure
00:05:23
display uh as well as any other
00:05:25
pertinent functions you do have cruise
00:05:27
control uh again this alcanta wheel uh
00:05:30
just feels amazing closing your eyes you
00:05:32
you know you know you're in something
00:05:34
spectacular uh in the center here this
00:05:36
is PCM with navigation systems
00:05:37
controlled all through the screen right
00:05:38
here and then on audio right here you
00:05:41
got a single CD player here below the
00:05:43
nav you got the automatic climate
00:05:45
control hit automatic set it and forget
00:05:47
it that's how I usually like to do it
00:05:49
take a look above my head here at the
00:05:50
suede headliner or I should say
00:05:52
Alcantara also the factory power moon
00:05:57
roof got a sixspeed manual shift here
00:05:59
you do have it an alcanta to match the
00:06:01
steering wheel so uh it is a sport short
00:06:03
shifter that you get from the factory
00:06:05
that is a uh standard part of the GT3
00:06:08
package but I want to take particular
00:06:09
note here you got active suspension
00:06:11
management button here this is a pasm it
00:06:14
really takes the car from riding like a
00:06:15
sports car to a skateboard uh that's
00:06:17
really only something you're going to
00:06:18
use on the on the racetrack really uh
00:06:20
sport here this is going to actually
00:06:22
open up the sport exhaust you can
00:06:23
actually hear the baffles open uh as we
00:06:25
demonstrated and then the throttle
00:06:26
response changes entirely car feels way
00:06:29
more hard wired and wants to launch a
00:06:30
whole lot more and then over here you
00:06:32
got traction control so when you're on
00:06:33
the street just rock it with traction
00:06:35
control you get to the track you can
00:06:37
illuminate all three of those and have
00:06:38
fun to your heart's Delight
00:07:04
[Applause]
00:07:13
rord Cruz I want you to understand how
00:07:15
Serene and sedate this car really is I
00:07:17
think everybody has the perception that
00:07:19
the GT2 or GT3 is just such a
00:07:22
[Music]
00:07:25
incredibly you don't need the Bose sound
00:07:28
system that's your Bose sound system
00:07:31
you know this car is so incredibly user
00:07:32
friendly I mean the the seating position
00:07:35
it's like when you're in this car you
00:07:36
forget that you're in something that
00:07:38
is probably quicker than
00:07:41
99% of cars that I would say come out of
00:07:43
the factories and just because of that
00:07:47
you know this makes it a livable daily
00:07:48
driver um and just for example granted
00:07:51
we got a little bit of snow on our
00:07:52
grassy areas but we've had some warm
00:07:53
temperatures here so our roads have
00:07:55
cleared uh entirely so it's a dry day
00:07:57
here but it's uh 31°
00:07:59
uh that's the accurate Porsche
00:08:02
temperature and at
00:08:04
31° uh we haven't had any issues with
00:08:07
traction at all uh I've just kind of
00:08:09
laid into it a couple times uh since
00:08:11
we've come out here just kind of testing
00:08:12
the limits and I can't get the thing to
00:08:14
to trip the traction so that's pretty
00:08:17
impressive I think obviously got a rear
00:08:18
weight bias uh but the zanta wheel and
00:08:21
the short shift you know they don't ever
00:08:22
let you forget that uh you're reminded
00:08:26
every time you touch them that and also
00:08:29
with his great tachometer it says GT3
00:08:31
right in the middle but listen to this
00:08:36
thing nice easy short shift nice easy
00:08:39
clutch it's a hydraulically modulated
00:08:41
clutch so it's not heavy at all but I
00:08:43
mean right now there's actually it's
00:08:45
probably less difficult to drive this
00:08:46
car than a Honda Civic uh the neat part
00:08:49
is it's got the active suspension
00:08:50
management which when not engaged allows
00:08:52
the car to have a really Supple ride uh
00:08:55
if I put the sport on you'll actually
00:08:56
hear the character of the exhaust change
00:08:58
here and I'll turn it on now
00:08:59
[Music]
00:09:02
guess can't really hear it some much on
00:09:03
the road but uh active suspension
00:09:06
management is on now and now we are
00:09:07
riding in the skateboard you probably
00:09:09
hear my voice quiver as we go over some
00:09:11
of these bumps here and we're not even
00:09:13
on a very bumpy road uh but this is also
00:09:17
a great opportunity to showcase this
00:09:19
car's uh chassis it's so well built and
00:09:22
so solid here we're coming up on a 10 m
00:09:25
hour curve this is a slow one so we're
00:09:27
not going to fly through it but I'm just
00:09:28
going to
00:09:30
[Music]
00:09:33
just
00:09:34
casually walk right through it on a
00:09:36
bumpy road and it's like any other
00:09:39
[Music]
00:09:43
[Applause]
00:09:44
car all right out in the GT3 and here's
00:09:49
our world famous
00:09:51
[Music]
00:09:57
shot that might be the most fun semi-
00:10:00
shot I think I've ever done you feel
00:10:02
that suspension that's awesome even Dave
00:10:05
smiling huge over
00:10:10
[Music]
00:10:14
there oh my God those brakes are
00:10:21
amazing wow that was freaking awesome
00:10:30
[Music]
00:10:39
[Applause]
00:10:50
man I wish it was summer time we' gone
00:10:52
out and had so much more fun with this
00:10:53
but again uh you know I don't want to
00:10:56
run a car like this too hard I mean it's
00:10:57
almost brand new this is going to be
00:10:58
somebody else's absolutely brand new
00:11:00
wonderful toy uh and the GT3 is a
00:11:03
Driving Experience you can't replicate
00:11:04
with any other car including the GT2 and
00:11:06
including the turbo uh it's the closest
00:11:08
to be on a road course that you probably
00:11:09
can be this side of a Lotus elisee uh
00:11:12
and even in then on a private road
00:11:14
really nothing else matches it uh in my
00:11:17
hand here I got a copy of the Carfax and
00:11:18
auto check vehicle history report uh one
00:11:20
owner car we did buy the car privately
00:11:22
so uh as you'd imagine came from its
00:11:24
original home in this condition right to
00:11:26
us uh and truth be told we haven't even
00:11:28
detailed this car yet I mean this is
00:11:29
really how clean this car came to us um
00:11:32
and then also I've got the original
00:11:33
option sheet here uh the car was put
00:11:36
into service in June so the car's uh
00:11:39
4year 50,000 Mi factory warranty runs
00:11:42
through June 11th 2010 that's a good
00:11:44
chunk of change but option wise not a
00:11:46
whole ton here you got the B zuns up
00:11:47
front and then PCM with navigation in
00:11:49
there but all in all uh 110 160 would
00:11:52
have been the MSRP on this car but go to
00:11:54
our website and see a whole lot more

Description:

2007 Porsche 911 GT3 (997) test drive and walk around from Chicago Cars Direct. The GT3 is the road-going basis of the world's most popular race car (more than 1000 have been built since 1998). That makes it the pinnacle of the Porsche production-car pyramid as well as the homologation special that justifies the existence of the GT3 racing car. The secret to its split personality is Porsche Active Suspension Management, or PASM, which allows drivers to alter the dynamic character of the car by pushing a button to modify the shock valving of the three-way adjustable Bilsteins. "You can never be happy with one setup for both the road and the racetrack," Hartmut Kristen, Porsche's director of motorsport, says from the pit wall while Walter R"hrl rockets past in a screaming yellow GT3. "With PASM, we don't have to compromise." It's no coincidence that Porsche's motorsports honcho and a two-time World Rally Champion helped develop the GT3. Unlike the Ferrari Enzo, the Bugatti Veyron, and the Porsche Carrera GT, the GT3 isn't an exercise in corporate ego and wretched excess. Nor is it a car whose fundamentally uninspiring qualities have been overcome with heroic surgery, such as the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, the Chevrolet Cobalt SS, and various AMG Mercedes-Benzes. The GT3 is the 911 pared down to its essence. As such, it embodies the very soul of Porsche, a company that considers motorsports not merely a marketing strategy but a corporate imperative. The first Porsche ever built won its first race a month after it was finished. The company established its bona fides during the 1950s with a series of giant-killing sports racers and burnished its image during the '70s with a string of ground-pounding, twelve-cylinder prototypes. Motor racing is so deeply rooted in the company's heritage that the 911 Carrera-the quintessential version of the quintessential Porsche-takes its name from the Spanish word for "race." The GT3 is the spiritual descendant of the iconic 911 Carrera RS, the pared-down, pumped-up version of the 911 that served as the homologation basis for the Carrera RSR racing car. By the same token, the modern GT3 is the street version of the GT3 Cup car, which competes in international Supercup races and numerous national series. This fall, Porsche will launch an upgraded road car called the GT3 RS, and this, in turn, will be the homologation model for next year's GT3 RSR. To further confuse matters, the GT3 RSR will compete at Le Mans in the GT2 class. Don't mind the alphabet soup. Just think of the four models of GT3 as great, greater, greatest, and way out of your league. Here in the States, most Cup cars race in Porsche club events and the IMSA-sanctioned GT3 Cup Challenge. This year's first IMSA event, a support race held before the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring, drew forty entries. (The enduro had only thirty-five.) Although the rules require all drivers to be amateurs, most cars are prepped to a professional standard, complete with gaudy graphics and trackside support. Arrive-and-drive weekends run about $25,000. If car ownership is your thing, the MSRP is $131,000, plus a $9000 spares package. Believe it or not, that's a sweetheart deal. "I couldn't build a car for that much. There's no way," says Dennis Aase, who prepared four of the cars that raced at Sebring. "Even if I started with a wrecked car, it would cost at least $175,000." Porsche Motorsport North America president Uwe Brettel, the mastermind behind the series, sees it not as a moneymaker but as a marketing tool. "For sure, we could have made $20,000 more per car. But what for?" he says. "We are not out to make the maximum profit. We race because it's the best way to promote the road car. The link between the road car and the racing car is integral." The first roadgoing version of the GT3 was built in 1998, but it wasn't exported to the United States. We weren't deemed worthy until 2003. At the time, the GT3 was based on the 996 platform. This, the first of the water-cooled 911s, sold well by Porsche standards. But with plenty of styling cues and mechanical components shared with the d,class, Boxster, it never got the love from Porschephiles. The more highly regarded 997 debuted for the 2005 model year, and the new GT3 is the first GT3 to be derived from it. The GT3 starts life as a Carrera 4 body-in-white on the production-car assembly line in Zuffenhausen. The space devoted to the front axle in the four-wheel-drive model is used to hold a 23.7-gallon fuel tank, and some structural modifications are made to accommodate the new engine, transmission, and oil reservoir. Thanks to the aluminum trunk lid and doors, not to mention a host of other weight-saving measures, the GT3 weighs in at 3076 pounds
