00:00:00
The muscle car market has been crashing.
00:00:02
In fact, it's down over 10% in the last
00:00:05
two years alone. In this video, I'm
00:00:07
going to break down what's going on and
00:00:09
what the data says the future holds for
00:00:11
muscle car prices and values. And in
00:00:13
part two of this video, I'm going to
00:00:14
share with you some of the emerging
00:00:16
trends that are happening in the market
00:00:17
right now. What's hot, what might be a
00:00:20
good buy, and what might ultimately be a
00:00:22
good investment. The classic muscle car
00:00:24
market is definitely cooling, which is
00:00:26
likely due to the inflationary forces
00:00:28
our economy is suffering, as well as the
00:00:31
overall political, social, and economic
00:00:33
uncertainty going on right now. Things
00:00:35
are weird right now, so it makes sense
00:00:36
that the muscle car market would reflect
00:00:38
that. Muscle cars, like any collectible,
00:00:40
thrive when the economy is doing well
00:00:42
and people have disposable income. The
00:00:45
2008 recession sent prices plummeting,
00:00:48
as did the CO 19 pandemic. And we're
00:00:51
currently in a situation where eggs are
00:00:52
a luxury item. When people are
00:00:54
struggling to put food on the table and
00:00:56
pay their rent, they put that special
00:00:57
someday car on the back burner. We're
00:00:59
all watching Barrett Jackson and make
00:01:01
them auctions and seeing some one-off
00:01:03
sales that are extremely high. The
00:01:04
reality is that super rare cars with the
00:01:06
right engine and option packages are
00:01:09
annihilating previous high market sales.
00:01:11
Sales prices have been so high that even
00:01:13
a 1971 Hemi Cuda convertible tried to
00:01:17
sell for 4.8 8 million and didn't meet
00:01:20
the reserve. That's crazy. So, that
00:01:22
gives you and me the impression that
00:01:24
these cars are all going up in value.
00:01:26
But that's just not the case. Most of
00:01:27
these high dollar sales we're seeing on
00:01:29
these auctions are very rare, highly
00:01:31
optioned or totally restored resto mods
00:01:34
or custom builds. The reality is that
00:01:36
the perception that these cars are so
00:01:38
valuable has caused people to think
00:01:40
their car is worth so much, which has
00:01:43
been making even entry-level cars
00:01:45
seemingly unaffordable. Now, it seems
00:01:46
like the market can't continue to
00:01:48
support these inflated prices, which is
00:01:50
why there's a correction going on.
00:01:52
Surprisingly, these and these are taking
00:01:55
a big hit. According to topsp speed.com,
00:01:58
the 6970 Mustang dropped by 15 grand,
00:02:02
and the Camaro, Chevel, and GTO's also
00:02:04
dipped, which is significant because
00:02:06
these are the car models with fanatical
00:02:08
fan bases. For us gearheads and classic
00:02:10
car owners, this information is
00:02:12
alarming. Let's take a look at the
00:02:13
numbers. First off, looking at the
00:02:15
Hagerty collector car index, it's
00:02:18
definitely a bit disconcerting. We see
00:02:20
the cars went up from 2020 and then
00:02:23
since 24, they've dropped by at least
00:02:25
10%. Additionally, you see the exact
00:02:28
same numbers echoed by classic.com
00:02:31
showing the same downward trend. So,
00:02:34
what does this all mean? Should we be
00:02:35
scared? The American muscle car market
00:02:37
has been a major part of the collector
00:02:39
car market for at least 20 years. As
00:02:41
baby boomers are reaching their 70s and
00:02:43
80s, we're going to be heavily reliant
00:02:44
upon Gen Xers that grew up around these
00:02:47
cars to carry the torch. And hopefully
00:02:49
with some help from millennials that are
00:02:51
showing interest in more drivable and
00:02:52
modified classics. But cars like this,
00:02:55
this, and this, these Mopars are staying
00:02:58
strong. Despite the volatility, it looks
00:03:00
like Mopar is staying strong. Clearly,
00:03:02
they're a muscle car investment that
00:03:04
will deliver returns and seem to be
00:03:06
impervious to external market forces,
00:03:08
probably based on their low production
00:03:10
numbers in comparison to GM and Ford at
00:03:12
that time. Bodies look extremely
00:03:14
popular. The Charger has jumped a
00:03:16
whopping 60K. And not mentioned in the
00:03:19
trend table is also the Coronet, which
00:03:21
is up 15K in average auction sale prices
00:03:24
over the last 5 years. So, there is some
00:03:27
hope. As you can see, different cars
00:03:29
will have different fates. the ultra
00:03:30
rare cars will probably never lose value
00:03:32
and probably will continue to rise. The
00:03:35
way I see the market is like this. It's
00:03:37
a bit of a fishbowl analogy where we're
00:03:39
looking at a reverse bell curve where
00:03:40
you've got ultra rare, desirable, and
00:03:43
all original cars on one end. You've got
00:03:46
highly modified, custom, and really nice
00:03:48
cars on the other end. And everything
00:03:50
else tends to kind of group in the
00:03:52
middle. You got simple, nicely done
00:03:54
starting to rise over here. You got
00:03:56
rare, desirable, ultra rare over here.
00:03:59
So, the market is always going to be
00:04:00
strongest on these two corners. For the
00:04:02
more common muscle cars, the prices have
00:04:04
peaked and now they're coming down. That
00:04:06
could be a good thing because a lot of
00:04:07
people now might be able to afford
00:04:09
something nice that was previously out
00:04:10
of reach. So, it might be the right time
00:04:12
to buy something soon. These things work
00:04:15
in cycles. If cars are more affordable,
00:04:17
we're going to buy more cars. That's
00:04:18
going to increase demand and drive
00:04:20
prices back up. Chances are that classic
00:04:22
muscle cars will always be a solid
00:04:24
investment as opposed to stocks or
00:04:26
bonds. They're tangible. There's
00:04:28
something that you can use and enjoy,
00:04:30
touch and feel, which has an inherent
00:04:32
value. It all starts with buying the
00:04:34
right car. Get my free classic car
00:04:35
checklist and buyer guide linked below.
00:04:37
It'll help save you from the many
00:04:38
pitfalls of buying a classic car. This
00:04:40
brings me to part two of the video,
00:04:42
emerging trends and what's starting to
00:04:44
get hot. And what's really starting to
00:04:46
get hot right now is the C10 trucks.
00:04:48
They're like wildfire. You used to find
00:04:50
these trucks in a barn, in a yard,
00:04:53
sitting outside in some work site.
00:04:56
$10,000 or less. Now they seem to be
00:04:59
worth 20, 30, 40 grand on a bad day. You
00:05:02
see these trucks are totally getting
00:05:03
tricked out and pimped out. You see
00:05:05
these trucks exceeding $100,000.
00:05:07
SEMA builds, I mean, trucks are hot
00:05:10
right now. If you can find yourself a
00:05:12
C10 like this, a 67 to 72 C10 is really
00:05:16
where it's at. These C10s are so hot
00:05:18
right now that I've got a buddy of mine
00:05:20
that's literally making a living just by
00:05:22
taking long beds and turning them into
00:05:24
short beds. shorten the bed, shorten the
00:05:26
frame, voila, you have a SWB, what they
00:05:29
call a short wide bed, and you can have
00:05:32
a really nice C10 for not a lot of
00:05:34
money. In fact, what's cool about that
00:05:35
is a lot of guys are leaving these
00:05:37
things patinaed. So, if you find one
00:05:39
sitting somewhere, you don't have to
00:05:40
invest all this money in a paint job.
00:05:42
It's actually just as cool to have one
00:05:44
in patina. So, if you can find a Chevy
00:05:46
truck, some of you guys that live out in
00:05:48
the middle of nowhere, if you will, in
00:05:50
the sticks, if you can find these
00:05:51
trucks, you might be able to make some
00:05:53
money because everybody everywhere is
00:05:55
looking for C10s right now. It's not
00:05:57
just the early C10s that are getting
00:05:58
hot. All of these square bodies, these
00:06:00
73 up into the 80s are also hot right
00:06:03
now. So, if you can pick up a truck like
00:06:05
this or anything in the 80s and 90s all
00:06:07
the way up to the OBS and what they call
00:06:09
the new body style. So, all the trucks
00:06:11
right now are hot. So, don't get me
00:06:12
wrong, it's not just the Chevy trucks.
00:06:14
It's the Fords, the Dodge, the
00:06:16
Studebakers. Every type of truck right
00:06:18
now is worth the investment. There's
00:06:20
never been a higher demand for trucks,
00:06:22
and you can see why. They're just so
00:06:24
cool. They're classic styling. Nothing
00:06:26
like driving down the road in a truck.
00:06:28
It seems like even if I'm in a really
00:06:29
nice muscle car, when I'm in a truck, I
00:06:31
get the most thumbs up. As prices get so
00:06:34
high for all these other traditional
00:06:35
muscle cars that I'm used to seeing,
00:06:37
we're really starting to see a lot of
00:06:39
these 80s type '90s type muscle cars
00:06:41
coming back into popularity right now. I
00:06:44
think it's because everything's so
00:06:45
expensive and you want to get something
00:06:46
that you can afford. You want to get
00:06:48
yourself in the game. What you're
00:06:50
starting to see is a lot of interest in
00:06:52
these Monte Carlos, the Grand Nationals
00:06:54
as popularized by Kendrick Lamar's uh
00:06:57
famous halftime show at the Super Bowl
00:06:59
this year. and anything that Gen X and
00:07:03
millennials grew up around. So, people
00:07:05
like what they grew up around, what they
00:07:06
saw. And so, that's why you're starting
00:07:08
to see a lot of these types of cars
00:07:10
getting hot. If you can find something
00:07:12
that's a reasonable deal, and it makes
00:07:15
you excited, get in the game, get
00:07:17
yourself a muscle car or a classic.
00:07:19
They're so fun to cruise around in. Even
00:07:21
though we say the economy is weird right
00:07:23
now, there's always a place in our
00:07:25
hearts for a classic car. something like
00:07:27
this, a convertible. You can never go
00:07:29
wrong with a classic convertible in
00:07:30
terms of investment. Also, you're seeing
00:07:33
these big body cars are getting really
00:07:34
popular. The 67 Catalina right now we're
00:07:37
doing for a full restoration wasn't a
00:07:39
car we would normally have done years
00:07:41
ago, but right now convertibles, big
00:07:43
cars, four-doors, wagons, whatever it
00:07:46
is, everything seems to be actually
00:07:48
doing quite well. I know the doom and
00:07:51
gloom of the market says that cars are
00:07:53
going down, but most of them are going
00:07:55
up. I'm just talking about specifically
00:07:57
some of the investment grade cars are
00:07:59
moving around so you can follow the data
00:08:01
and see where they're at. But I think in
00:08:03
the long run, classic cars are always a
00:08:05
good investment because you can use
00:08:07
them, you can enjoy them, and nothing
00:08:09
beats
