Sadly, economics and the need for capacity and speed had outpaced the Brabazon's project, and even by the time the airliner made its first flight in September 1949, it was, in principle, an obsolete novelty, quickly scrapped after only four years of existence despite it being the largest landplane in the world at the time, though despite its loss and failure, the facilities and technology built to support this mighty machine would filter down through the wider aviation industry, ensuring that the Brabazon's death wasn't entirely in vain.
