00:00:00
Autumn is a really good time to be able
00:00:03
to assess your borders. All of the
00:00:05
bounce and floriferousness has started
00:00:08
to melt back and now we can really see
00:00:10
what's worked throughout the season. So,
00:00:12
first of all, were there any obvious
00:00:14
gaps, things that didn't work, plants
00:00:16
that didn't come through. The other
00:00:19
thing is being able to look and see,
00:00:20
well, what was the color flow? Did it
00:00:22
really work?
00:00:27
[Music]
00:00:28
This time of year, we can still add in
00:00:31
plants into the borders. It's really
00:00:33
good time. The roots can start to get
00:00:35
down before the rest of the plant goes
00:00:37
dormant. So, adding in those elements of
00:00:40
what you want to see either for now or
00:00:42
for early spring is a really good thing,
00:00:44
too. And it's kind of not being afraid
00:00:46
to think that you can lift and divide at
00:00:49
this time of year. It really is a great
00:00:51
time. gets your hands really in the soil
00:00:53
and seeing how the root system is. And
00:00:55
the plants are beginning to go into
00:00:57
dormcancy so that they can actually um
00:00:59
take being lifted. So don't worry about
00:01:01
that. It is important to leave as much
00:01:04
winter structure as we can in the
00:01:06
borders. So tidying up has got to be
00:01:10
done but with a specific height. It is
00:01:12
an aesthetical taste as well. So I'll
00:01:14
hopefully be showing you some of the
00:01:15
things I will be leaving up and some of
00:01:17
the things I will definitely be cutting
00:01:19
back.
00:01:21
This is a perfect example of what I
00:01:23
would leave up in a garden. Echanatia
00:01:26
got the seed heads. Perfect for birds to
00:01:28
come and feed at as well. And it's great
00:01:30
because you can already see a little
00:01:32
ladybird is already making a little bit
00:01:34
of a home on that seed head there. There
00:01:37
are also in the stems here nice little
00:01:40
places for spiders to be able to go and
00:01:42
overwinter. and it looks great in the
00:01:46
autumn light and also when it comes to
00:01:48
winter time when there's frost on it
00:01:50
adds a little bit of twinkle in the
00:01:51
garden as well. So, this is something
00:01:52
that I would most definitely leave.
00:01:55
[Music]
00:01:58
This hosta I've made a start on already
00:02:00
because this does need to be cut back.
00:02:02
As you can see, it's already dying back
00:02:04
quite nicely, but it goes quite wet and
00:02:08
mulchy, which is not great because it
00:02:10
means that then the slugs and snails
00:02:12
will go marvelous. we can come and lay
00:02:14
our eggs in this area. It doesn't look
00:02:17
particularly attractive and it's perfect
00:02:19
to add into the compost heap. So,
00:02:22
obviously, it will be going back on the
00:02:24
garden in a new fall next year.
00:02:28
You can cut back quite low as I'm doing
00:02:30
here. Again, any of the uh stems that
00:02:33
have got little areas for little insects
00:02:36
to go and hibernate, they will, but it
00:02:38
just not only tidies up the plant, but
00:02:41
it does also as well help with plant
00:02:43
health. Okay, all of this is now ready
00:02:45
to be collected up and popped in the
00:02:49
compost heat.
00:02:54
This is the perfect time to lift and
00:02:56
divide plants. Lifting could just be it
00:02:59
was in the wrong place. I want to move
00:03:00
it into another part of the garden or if
00:03:03
you want to get another plant out of an
00:03:06
existing um perennial, this would be the
00:03:08
time to do it. So, this geranium here is
00:03:11
a great example. It's flowers a little
00:03:13
bit earlier in the season. So, this is a
00:03:15
really good time. All the flowers are
00:03:17
pretty much spent on it now. Things that
00:03:19
are flowering a little bit later in the
00:03:20
season, maybe like um some of the
00:03:23
anemies, they can be uh cut back later
00:03:26
in spring and divided them. So, what I
00:03:29
would do here is I'm going to dig this
00:03:31
up, cut it back because we don't need
00:03:34
any of the top growth now. It's going
00:03:36
into stormcy. Divide it. Depending on
00:03:39
how big the clump is, you might get two
00:03:41
plants from it, might get three. I've
00:03:42
even seen four at times. I've got a
00:03:44
little space over there in the border.
00:03:47
And I'm going to divide this in two and
00:03:49
get two plants. So, I better get on with
00:03:51
some work.
00:03:57
There's no escape. Just got to get in
00:03:58
the borders and get weeding. You'll be
00:04:00
grateful for it in the springtime when
00:04:02
you're on top of those borders. So
00:04:04
things like this, there's still a bit of
00:04:07
annual weeds, chickw weeds that's still
00:04:10
in the garden. And of course, good old
00:04:13
evergreen
00:04:16
ivy.
00:04:18
I mean, fantastic for when it's going to
00:04:20
be up on a wall and flowering for bees,
00:04:23
but I don't want it creeping through
00:04:25
borders.
00:04:28
It's still a great time to get some
00:04:31
additional plants into the border,
00:04:33
especially if it's a bit mild and that
00:04:36
soil's still nice and warm. I wanted to
00:04:38
put in some late autumn flowering in
00:04:40
here. So, some aers I think I'm going to
00:04:42
put in here. There's a lovely gap for
00:04:44
them. Long flowering, so really still
00:04:47
putting a bit of sparkle into the
00:04:48
garden. So, I think I'm going to pop
00:04:50
these here and come back and plant them.
00:04:52
Position them. Also, this gets a stylus.
00:04:55
There's one in the border already. And
00:04:58
having a space here
00:05:01
is going to be great
00:05:03
because one thing about planting design
00:05:06
is lovely to get a rhythm of color going
00:05:08
on. Kind of got this nice pink from the
00:05:10
alsteria
00:05:12
skits stylus a little bit echanatia
00:05:14
still working. So this is going to be a
00:05:16
really lovely addition into the border.
