stage. Uh Senator Sanders came in, took00:00:48
the Democratic leadership, as you just00:00:50
heard, to task for not lending their00:00:52
support to uh now mayor elect um uh00:00:56
Zoron Manni and didn't do it when he was00:00:59
running. And we're going to hear what00:01:00
Schumer had to say in response, but00:01:03
first, Jenk, uh what do you what have00:01:05
you got on this? >> Uh it made me think of like what if uh00:01:08
Bernie was the Senate Minority Leader?00:01:11
Uh let alone if he were other positions.00:01:14
But, uh, that's the type of message we00:01:15

him. He took on the Republican00:02:21
establishment and of course he took on00:02:23
the Democratic establishment.00:02:25

progressives running,00:02:52
protecting the needs of the working00:02:54
class, taking on big money interests,00:02:57
fighting for an agenda that works for00:02:59

of course representative Alexandria00:03:06
Aasio Cortez who had some harsh words00:03:09
for the party on the night mom Donnie00:03:11
won the race herself. And here is uh the00:03:14

he had to defeat a Republican and the00:03:20
old guard of the Democratic party at the00:03:22
same time. He was fighting a war on two00:03:24
fronts and not just one. And he still00:03:27

message that that sends is that the00:03:31
Democratic Party cannot last much longer00:03:34
by denying00:03:37
the future, by trying to undercut our00:03:41
young, by trying to undercut uh a next00:03:44
generation of diverse and upcoming00:03:46
Democrats that have the parties, the00:03:50
actual party, the actual electorate and00:03:53
voter support.00:03:55
Uh and and despite never having endorsed00:03:58
mom Donnie, refusing to say even who he00:04:01
voted for, leader Schumer fully rejected00:04:03
that he is out of step with the00:04:05
Democratic base. And as the New York00:04:07
Times uh reported, Schumer still exudes00:04:10
confidence that he is an effective party00:04:12
leader making unpopular decisions that00:04:14
these kinds of progressive figures don't00:04:17
have to face. Uh he often points to the00:04:19
fact that he never faces any challenge00:04:21
to his leadership from the Senate00:04:23
Democratic Caucus as a sign of his00:04:25
strength. Even if this year he has seen00:04:27
his poll numbers in New York dip lower00:04:29
than they have in the past two decades00:04:31
and that's very low. Right now his00:04:33
popularity rating is underwater by 2000:04:36
points according to Real Clear Polling.00:04:39
He was asked to respond to uh00:04:41
Congresswoman Okassio Cortez's statement00:04:44
during his press conference yesterday.00:04:46
Here's what the minority leader had to00:04:48
say. >> I'm moving forward. This morning, I00:04:50
talked with uh Mayor Elect Mani.00:04:54
We had a very, very good conversation.00:04:58
We said that we cared about New York00:04:59
City and that we look forward to working00:05:04
together to help the city and improve00:05:06
the city. I congratulated him on running00:05:08
a very, very good campaign. And the00:05:11
issue that he has stressed is being00:05:12
stressed by Democrats across the country00:05:15
from one end of America to the other.00:05:18
The high costs that the Trump00:05:20
administration is imposing on us and00:05:22
their failure to do anything about it.00:05:25

was late to the press conference. So00:06:10
Bernie's just sitting there and they00:06:11
asked him a question about the00:06:14
establishment. So he's like, "You want00:06:15
to ask a question? I'll tell you."00:06:17
Right? I mean, what is he supposed to00:06:18
do? Hide his feelings? No, of course.00:06:20
And uh uh Mr. In between said taps00:06:23
Schumer on the shoulder and says,00:06:26
"Bounce, bitch." Okay. Now, Bernie00:06:28
didn't do that. Okay. Although that's a00:06:30
fun way of putting it. Uh so look, uh00:06:33
several different things here. Schumer00:06:35
never endorsed uh and Hakee Jeff00:06:38
endorsed like three minutes before the00:06:41
race was called. I'm exaggerating but00:06:43
not by much about last week or so after00:06:45
a long long race. And the reason is00:06:48
obvious. Their donors didn't want them00:06:49
to. And and they're in the opposite camp00:06:51
in the of the Democratic party. They're00:06:53
in the corrupt camp and Mam Donnie and00:06:54
Bernie are in the clean camp. And so00:06:56

there's been this unspoken war between00:07:14

spoken online all the time. On TV00:07:19
though, it's almost never mentioned like00:07:22
because if you because in the past what00:07:24
would happen is if a progressive said,00:07:26
"Yeah, of course there's an establishment." They say, "Well, who do00:07:29
you think it is? Are you saying Chuck00:07:30
Schumer has blow your establishment? And00:07:32
then obviously the answer is yes. But00:07:34
then that's seen as some big affront to00:07:36
unity. Wait a minute.00:07:39
Here are the Democratic leadership that00:07:41
never endorsed Mumani who was a00:07:43
Democratic candidate. So obviously they00:07:45
never meant anything about unity.00:07:48
Whenever they said unity, they meant00:07:50
compliance. I think that one is00:07:52
inarguable. You could argue about the00:07:54
two sides and who's right, but that's00:07:57
at is at this point we have empirical00:08:00
evidence and we've had a lot of00:08:01
empirical evidence. When progressives00:08:04
are uh in in trouble or challenged, the00:08:07
establishment never helps them. Never.00:08:10
And whenever they feel they got an inch00:08:12
above progressives, they're like, "YOU00:08:14
MUST OBEY UNITY." SO, IT'S LIES. 100%00:08:17
LIES. I'm done with that. And by the00:08:19
way, Schumer should be done, too. Now, I00:08:20
mean, Pelosi's gone now. [snorts]00:08:23
Cuomo's gone and and AOC should primary00:08:26
Schumer in for the New York Senate race,00:08:29
obviously, and drive him out and easily00:08:31
take that seat. That's my opinion.00:08:33

governor of New York.00:09:21

theater. These leaders should have00:09:56
endorsed the the the Democrat who won00:09:59
there. Uh I I understand why they00:10:02
didn't, and I don't that doesn't mean I00:10:04
sympathize with why they didn't. I get00:10:06
why they didn't. I don't think it's as00:10:07
much about money as you probably do. I I00:10:11
don't think it's about the donors. Maybe00:10:12
in in Schumer's case a little more than00:10:14
Jeffrey's case it is. But I think that00:10:17
it that that it's about a national00:10:19
strategy that the Democratic Party has00:10:22
for better or worse, whether it works or00:10:23
it doesn't work, of saying we are not00:10:26
going to uh get ourselves caught up in00:10:29
what we view as being00:10:32
fringe types of uh of issues. You hear00:10:37
Republicans ecstatic that Manny won00:10:39
because they can tie the national party00:10:41
to Mam Donnie. So what these national00:10:43
figures are doing are saying, "Yeah, we00:10:45
we're we're okay with Mum Donnie00:10:46
winning. We don't want to get involved00:10:48
with it because we want to be able to a00:10:50
raise money on it and b be able to run00:10:53
the types of national campaigns that we00:10:55
want to." Whether you agree with that or00:10:56
not, that's the strategy and I I I get00:10:59
it. So that's00:11:00

about immigration. No one has asked me00:12:47
about civil rights. No one has asked me00:12:49
uh about housing." They're all talking00:12:51
about that. So, in in in fairness and00:12:53
and in agreement with what you're00:12:55
saying, the media is carving this out00:12:57
because those are the questions they're00:12:58
asking and those are the connections00:13:00
they're drawing. So, they will ask uh00:13:02

does it mean if the minority leader of00:13:06
the House of Representatives is00:13:07
endorsing someone who is a Democratic00:13:10

the other night. There have been other00:15:32
mayors of New York who have challenged00:15:34
the establishment and been wildly00:15:36
unsuccessful mayors. Uh I happen to00:15:38
think Mum Donnie is is too smart to be00:15:41
dumb when he is mayor. Uh David Dinkens00:15:44
uh challenged the establishment. He's a00:15:46
black burough president, Manhattan00:15:47
burough president in New York. Yes, he00:15:48
came up through a political machine in00:15:50
New York, but you know, there there were00:15:52
not a lot of citywide uh black figures00:15:54
who did well in that way. And of course,00:15:57
he was the first black mayor. Uh and00:15:59
then Bill Delasio, who came kind of out00:16:01
of nowhere as a progressive, a very00:16:03
progressive candidate who came in with00:16:05
an arrogance that he could do whatever00:16:07
he wanted and was uh while while00:16:09
charismatic, unsuccessful. So I I think00:16:11
that there is most definitely precedent00:16:13
for challenging the establishment in New00:16:16
York. But when leadership in Washington00:16:18
comes from New York, it's different. You00:16:20
have a New York senator who runs the00:16:22
minority in the Senate and you have a00:16:24
New York representative from Queens and00:16:25
Hakee Jeff who runs the minority party00:16:28
in the House. They should have stood up.00:16:30
You know, now now unfortunately Mumani00:16:32
needs them more than he needs, you know,00:16:34
more than they need him. Uh because if00:16:37
if Trump is going to make it difficult00:16:38
on him, he's going to have to find a way00:16:41
to get money and support from Congress.00:16:43
uh and and that's the way it's going to00:16:45
shake out at least for the next year00:16:46
while that leadership team is in there.00:16:48
So, uh on election night though, there00:16:51
were other Democrats, many national00:16:53
Democrats who congratulated the two00:16:55
candidates who won that night in other00:16:57
places and some of the others uh on00:17:00
their victories, but didn't point to00:17:02
Mamani. So, consistent with what we've00:17:04

former transportation secretary and um00:17:09
and mayor, um he said New Jersey and00:17:11
Virginia have chosen well by electing00:17:13
Mikey Cheryl and Spanberger for00:17:15

their next governors. There are proven00:17:18
leaders who won by focusing on what00:17:20
matters most, how politics and policy00:17:22
can make everyday life better and more00:17:25

yesterday, "We showed that the power of00:17:31
the people is greater than the president00:17:33
in power with the images of four00:17:36
headlines attached, none mentioning New00:17:38
York or Mamani. You'll see uh00:17:40
Philadelphia with uh New Jersey. Uh00:17:43
Philadelphia had had in Pennsylvania00:17:46
Supreme Court justices that all won. Uh00:17:48
New They're a bedroom community for some00:17:50
New Jersey uh voters. Uh they have Mikey00:17:53
Cheryl there. California and Prop 50,00:17:55
the Demistricting, and Abigail00:17:57
Spamberger. There seemed to have been00:17:58
room. I think you could have lost the00:18:00
across Philly and New Jersey headline00:18:02
there and put room for Mum Donnie00:18:04
