Located about halfway between Australia's two largest cities, the Bethungra Spiral has been an important part of the line between Melbourne and Sydney since the 1940s, with essential freight and passenger services passing through 24/7. Shot around December 13th & 14th, 2022, a mixture of freight trains are captured, including two diverted Pacific National Freight Trains via Victoria due to flooding across the Broken Hill line and the rare sight of the Indian Pacific not long after sunrise, running the long way around also. It heads through the Spiral just after exiting Tunnel 2 up the 1 in 66 gradient. Locomotive SCT010 hauls the train solo, with CSR016 not required due to a short train and small load. The train is then seen from a distance, powering across the top of Tunnel 2. Diverted via Victoria, Steel from the Whyalla Steelworks was still vitally required on the East Coast. Pacific National Service 2YN2 is moving a heavy load with triple NRs through the Spiral bound for Newcastle on the coast north of Sydney. Heading downgrade via the old route, Pacific National Diverted Freight 3SP4, worked by triple NRs 19, 52, and 85, was captured from the skies not long after the passing of 2YN2. Early the following day, we return to the Spiral for a shot of the rare sight of a Diverted Indian Pacific through the Spiral and the region. The train usually travels to Sydney via the Blue Mountains. Locomotives NR29 and NR28 lead the service, which is seen from the viewing platform and drone footage as it passes through the Spiral.
