[Music]
00:00:38
hey everybody this is Dave nassie over
00:00:40
here at Next Level Guitar and we're
00:00:42
going to do a really fun thing today
00:00:44
we're going to dive into the style of
00:00:47
Stevie Ron and really just capture the
00:00:49
feel have a great time and learn some
00:00:51
tremendous licks that are in the style
00:00:53
of Stevie Ron the first thing we're
00:00:55
going to do is we're going to address
00:00:56
the scale shapes that we're going to use
00:00:58
to go ahead and a achieve these
00:01:00
aggressive licks that we're talking
00:01:01
about and the important thing again to
00:01:03
remember is that I am tuned down a half
00:01:05
step I'm going to show this to you in C
00:01:08
so I'm going to be working in the eighth
00:01:10
position working in the C position we're
00:01:13
going to of course outline our first
00:01:15
form of our pentatonic scale and it
00:01:17
looks just like
00:01:19
[Music]
00:01:25
this easy enough standard shape we all
00:01:28
know him and we love him so we're going
00:01:30
to start with the second form of
00:01:32
pentatonic and that means I'm going to
00:01:35
be playing the exact same notes that I
00:01:36
did in my first position I'm just going
00:01:38
to be starting from the second note
00:01:39
Andor the pinky note and that shape
00:01:42
looks just like
00:01:44
[Music]
00:01:50
this so those are two forms of your
00:01:53
basic pentatonic scale shape we're going
00:01:55
to go ahead and Dive Right In to some of
00:01:57
these standard kind of licks that we
00:01:59
hear all the time
00:02:00
so the first thing that I want to think
00:02:02
about is the turnaround now the
00:02:04
turnaround in the progression right what
00:02:06
is the turnaround that's going to be
00:02:07
addressing when we go from the five
00:02:10
[Music]
00:02:11
chord to that four
00:02:14
[Music]
00:02:16
chord right to back up to that five it's
00:02:19
turning around and the progression is
00:02:21
starting over again so within that you
00:02:23
might hear this kind of a lick from
00:02:25
Stevie Ron
00:02:27
[Music]
00:02:31
now that's a really fun lick to play
00:02:33
because it outlines a slightly different
00:02:36
note out of that pentatonic shape and it
00:02:38
gives us a little bit of tension when we
00:02:40
do so so let's look at that
00:02:42
[Music]
00:02:48
slowly now with this lick what I'm doing
00:02:50
is I've got my first finger laying flat
00:02:52
on the eighth fret I'm going to be
00:02:54
addressing this with an upstroke motion
00:02:56
and I'm going to be hammering down from
00:02:58
C to D on the height E string getting
00:03:00
[Music]
00:03:03
this and it's a really rather quick
00:03:05
hammer on to uh achieve that
00:03:11
sound and this lick will then
00:03:13
[Music]
00:03:16
go and that's a really neat note right
00:03:18
there right we're getting C sharp in
00:03:19
there it's going to work as a great
00:03:20
passing
00:03:22
[Music]
00:03:24
tone that's our little turnaround start
00:03:27
right there
00:03:29
[Music]
00:03:32
so I'll play that
00:03:33
[Music]
00:03:38
slowly from there I'm going to use that
00:03:40
blue scale and I'm going to slide
00:03:42
[Music]
00:03:45
in to that note and resolve it right
00:03:47
there on the C so what do we have so
00:03:56
far classic kind of a lick that you get
00:03:58
on that turnaround
00:04:01
[Music]
00:04:03
now we can always add variation within
00:04:05
that especially when you're being
00:04:06
aggressive and laying into that
00:04:10
[Music]
00:04:16
thing right we can add to it so let's
00:04:18
add that to it let's go ahead and get in
00:04:20
there and try that so coming from
00:04:27
here I'm going to go into a nice Bend
00:04:32
[Music]
00:04:35
but the note that we're sliding
00:04:36
to up to that
00:04:38
g we're going to bend up to
00:04:43
it so we're going to give one Bend and
00:04:47
one
00:04:48
slide each
00:04:51
[Music]
00:04:55
time and I think that's a really cool
00:04:57
lick coming out of that turnaround so
00:04:59
that can add to this
00:05:00
[Music]
00:05:07
now I love that so what I did there from
00:05:10
[Music]
00:05:17
this so when I'm sliding off of this
00:05:19
Blues
00:05:21
run I'm going to go back up with my
00:05:23
third finger and lay it flat to get 11
00:05:25
on the second string or your B flat note
00:05:28
then I'm sliding back into that flat
00:05:30
five and I'm right back into the notes
00:05:32
so you
00:05:35
get I like
00:05:36
[Music]
00:05:41
that so when you're coming from a
00:05:46
[Music]
00:05:48
bend and sometimes you could pull that
00:05:50
[Music]
00:05:57
off and there's another nice good one
00:06:00
that will help resolve that lick and
00:06:02
it's kind of cool because you're raking
00:06:04
into it so you get that kind of sound
00:06:06
and when you're really distorted and
00:06:08
Loud it'll just help Shear that skin off
00:06:11
all those faces the people watching you
00:06:12
right just peel it right
00:06:14
[Music]
00:06:15
off so what's going on here let's turn
00:06:18
the body a little bit sideways so we can
00:06:20
see that I'm muting a great deal of the
00:06:22
strings here with my first finger as I
00:06:24
go across the
00:06:25
guitar we'll just show that part of it
00:06:29
so you get get that real aggressive kind
00:06:31
of uh percussion to the instrument now
00:06:34
the note that I'm going to be sliding
00:06:35
from is this F note here so I'm going to
00:06:39
[Music]
00:06:41
go and that's all an upstroke motion
00:06:45
even to hit that
00:06:47
note then I go to that resolving C there
00:06:54
[Music]
00:07:04
that's
00:07:08
great yeah get really
00:07:14
aggressive so with that guy what we're
00:07:16
doing is we're going to use our index
00:07:18
finger and we're going to pull down on
00:07:20
these and really again we're trying to
00:07:21
melt some faces
00:07:23
people really pull that down and get
00:07:25
aggressive with it you're going to feel
00:07:27
that on your finger just then I thought
00:07:28
I was going to lose some skin was
00:07:30
fantastic so as I pull
00:07:31
[Music]
00:07:33
down I'm going to that C note but we're
00:07:36
not going to end there we're going to
00:07:38
go and get a nice little pulloff run
00:07:41
that's going from C to B flat and ending
00:07:42
on
00:07:45
G so you pick this one and then you pick
00:07:48
this one but you don't pick the
00:07:51
[Music]
00:07:57
end so right there we've got some really
00:08:00
nice sweet sounding licks in that first
00:08:03
position now let's talk about the second
00:08:05
position of our pentatonic scale so the
00:08:08
first thing that we're going to do is our
00:08:12
[Music]
00:08:13
classic and if you got enough sustain
00:08:16
there you could really let that thing
00:08:17
ring out now that's the back pickup
00:08:20
front
00:08:21
pickup and that's the other pick up
00:08:23
there that's just not quite in the front
00:08:25
there right so you hear that difference
00:08:26
and you get that sustain and that's what
00:08:28
that overdrive Andor your tube screammer
00:08:31
will do for your tone Now That's a
00:08:35
classic we can add to that by hitting
00:08:37
this E flat with and bending it up just
00:08:39
a little
00:08:41
[Music]
00:08:43
bit that's a good one back
00:08:47
pickup front
00:08:51
pickup now this is going to be back
00:08:53
pickup with only
00:08:54
[Music]
00:08:57
fingers and notice when I'm plucking in
00:08:59
the front part of the guitar and I'm
00:09:01
really heavily muting all of these
00:09:05
strings
00:09:08
pre-end
00:09:11
pre-end now you get so many
00:09:14
possibilities just within this confined
00:09:16
space of this pentatonic
00:09:20
scale because you're resolving to this
00:09:23
Cote and with limitation comes
00:09:26
creativity so you've got a lot of
00:09:28
options there I can start stretch
00:09:33
here that's a good one that will wake
00:09:36
your hand up every single time so you
00:09:39
bend
00:09:43
up right and I plucked all of those with
00:09:46
my finger if I hit that with a
00:09:47
[Music]
00:09:50
pick even kind of Rak into
00:09:53
that and that's really fun and to
00:09:56
achieve some of that aggression as well
00:09:59
[Applause] [Music]
00:10:03
so I'm going to play some of these now
00:10:04
I'm down a half step so remember I'm
00:10:06
going to shift accordingly that means
00:10:07
I'm going to be playing these things
00:10:08
from the ninth position just to be in
00:10:10
tune with the track and uh I'll see you
00:10:12
next time and you can tune in to the
00:10:14
