00:00:00
In a major unexpected win for Democrats,
00:00:02
a judge ruled late last night that the
00:00:04
new map put forward by Utah Republicans
00:00:06
was struck down and the judge instead
00:00:08
imposed a new map that includes one
00:00:10
district that Democrats are guaranteed
00:00:11
to win, which you can see here in Salt
00:00:14
Lake City. The Republicans initial
00:00:16
effort would have cracked Salt Lake City
00:00:17
among four districts, resulting in four
00:00:20
red districts that were no worse than R
00:00:22
+ 19 among the four of them. That means
00:00:24
19 points more Republican than the rest
00:00:26
of the nation. But the new map includes
00:00:28
a district that Harris won by 24 points
00:00:30
in 2024. So this ruling means that
00:00:33
Democrats will net another unlikely seat
00:00:35
in the 2026 election. The decision is
00:00:37
the latest in a tumultuous back and
00:00:39
forth on redistricting. The Republicans
00:00:41
have redrawn maps in Texas, Missouri,
00:00:43
Ohio, and North Carolina, netting them a
00:00:45
total of 6 to9 seats. Democrats have
00:00:48
responded by redrawing the map in
00:00:49
California, and along with this Utah
00:00:51
ruling, they'll net four to six seats,
00:00:53
which leaves Virginia, Maryland, and
00:00:55
Illinois. I spoke with both sitting
00:00:57
governors of Illinois and Maryland.
00:00:59
Here's what they had to say on the
00:01:00
issues of redistricting. Wesmore from
00:01:02
Maryland. at a time when we were
00:01:04
watching Donald Trump commence this
00:01:06
assault uh and not just this assault on
00:01:08
our state, but honestly this assault on
00:01:10
our democracy, you know, I have said and
00:01:13
I will continue to say that Maryland
00:01:14
will not just sit on its hands uh while
00:01:16
Donald Trump continues to pick and
00:01:18
choose which states have fair maps and
00:01:21
which states don't when he when we know
00:01:23
he's just trying to rig the rules uh
00:01:25
because he knows it's the only way for
00:01:26
him to win an election. And so I have uh
00:01:28
I have ordered the creation of a
00:01:31
governor's redistricting advisory
00:01:33
committee uh here in the state of
00:01:35
Maryland where I have uh assembled a
00:01:37
group of bipartisan leaders which is
00:01:39
going to be chaired by uh by Senator
00:01:41
Angela Alsbrooks who is going to spend
00:01:43
time listening to Marylanders and going
00:01:45
all around and uh and hearing where
00:01:47
Marylanders are on this issue. But uh
00:01:49
but with a very firm understanding that
00:01:51
come next November in Maryland, we will
00:01:53
have fair maps. And as all these states
00:01:55
are having are going through their
00:01:57
process of deciding whether or not they
00:01:58
have fair maps or not, I'm here to say
00:02:00
that so will Maryland.
00:02:01
>> And here's JB Pritsker from Illinois.
00:02:03
>> I think where we are is that these that
00:02:06
all the states uh that have the ability
00:02:08
to make a change are going to have to
00:02:11
contemplate what that's going to look
00:02:13
like, even Illinois. And we've got a,
00:02:15
you know, uh, 14 of our 17 members of
00:02:18
Congress are Democrats, three
00:02:21
Republicans. People think it can't be
00:02:23
done in Illinois, that we couldn't get
00:02:25
any more Republican seats. They're
00:02:27
that's not accurate.
00:02:28
>> And of course, as far as Virginia's
00:02:29
concerned, the state legislature has
00:02:31
already begun the process of redrawing
00:02:32
their maps by passing one of what will
00:02:35
ultimately need to be two bills to amend
00:02:37
the state constitution. But that process
00:02:39
is already underway. Once Virginia,
00:02:41
Maryland, and Illinois redraw their
00:02:43
maps, that would mean another five to
00:02:44
seven seats on the table for Democrats.
00:02:46
Meanwhile, Republicans may see new maps
00:02:48
from Nebraska, Indiana, and Florida,
00:02:50
netting them another four to six seats.
00:02:52
But when all is said and done, we're
00:02:54
looking at what may roughly be a wash in
00:02:56
the 2026 cycle as far as maps are
00:02:58
concerned. But I want to be clear, that
00:03:01
doesn't happen by accident. That happens
00:03:03
when Democrats actually fight back.
00:03:05
Remember, Trump told Texas to redraw
00:03:07
their mask because he thought the
00:03:08
Democrats would just lay down. Newsome
00:03:11
and California Dems didn't. Even though
00:03:13
there were a million reasons not to do
00:03:15
it, they opted to lean in and fight fire
00:03:17
with fire. As Newsome explained here,
00:03:19
there's literally no more evidence than
00:03:23
you need than the evidence that has been
00:03:24
submitted in the first six and a half,
00:03:26
seven months of the Trump
00:03:27
administration. And you think this is
00:03:28
going to get better? You think if we
00:03:30
just say, "Well, Mr. Trump, it's fine.
00:03:32
You know, we just, you know, we know
00:03:33
it's a race to the bottom. You know, you
00:03:35
may may you may call upon those other
00:03:38
states. Can you just do five and
00:03:39
California will stand down? God damn it.
00:03:42
Enough. >> Democrats,
00:03:44
>> stop being weak.
00:03:46
Step up.
00:03:47
>> These guys have been dominating in the
00:03:48
narrative. They have been defining the
00:03:50
terms of the debate. It's time to get on
00:03:52
our damn off our heels, onto our front
00:03:54
toes. It's time to do just that.
00:03:57
Dominate the narrative. Flood the zone
00:03:59
and surround sound. It's time for us to
00:04:01
all band together. It is about the
00:04:04
United States of America. He doesn't
00:04:05
believe in that. He believes in the red
00:04:07
states. He's going after. He's a war.
00:04:09
He's a wartime president. He's the head
00:04:11
of a war party. War on women. War on
00:04:13
voting rights. War on Hispanics. A war
00:04:16
on this state. War on institutions. I
00:04:18
want war on history. I mean, this is
00:04:20
serious. This guy's trying to get a
00:04:21
Nobel Peace Prize. That's what he's
00:04:23
going to try to say tomorrow in in in
00:04:26
Alaska that he's the big guy trying to
00:04:28
find peace. Really, when he's bringing
00:04:30
war to the American people, he put
00:04:32
military in the streets, not a Baghdad.
00:04:34
He didn't send the military in his first
00:04:36
administration anywhere in the world. He
00:04:38
sent the United States Marines into the
00:04:41
United States of America in one of the
00:04:43
blest cities in this country in Los
00:04:44
Angeles, one of the great cities,
00:04:46
American cities. That's what Donald
00:04:47
Trump did. He is a wartime president.
00:04:51
Now, the sad reality is that the Supreme
00:04:53
Court heard a case arguing for the
00:04:54
dissolution of section two of the Voting
00:04:56
Rights Act, which mandates opportunity
00:04:58
districts or black or brown majority
00:05:00
districts in a raft of states around the
00:05:02
country. And the reality is that they
00:05:04
will likely gut it, which means that
00:05:05
Republicans will have the opportunity to
00:05:07
erase yet another roughly 20 seats. So,
00:05:10
I just want to be clear here. This is
00:05:12
what we're up against. The Republicans,
00:05:14
of which I include the six justices on
00:05:16
the US Supreme Court, will go to any
00:05:18
lengths possible to entrench their own
00:05:21
power, which underscores the fact that
00:05:23
democratic reciprocation is not only
00:05:25
necessary, it is existential, which I
00:05:27
explained to Nuome here. The main point
00:05:29
here is if if you stand for any
00:05:32
democratic ideal, all of it relies on
00:05:34
having a functioning democracy. So, if
00:05:36
you're a governor or a state a state
00:05:38
legislator in another state and you
00:05:39
claim to want to combat climate change
00:05:41
or expand healthcare or protect women's
00:05:43
reproductive rights or make unions
00:05:44
stronger or whatever it is, protect kids
00:05:46
in schools from from guns, whatever it
00:05:49
may be, all of that relies on being able
00:05:51
to survive in a functional democracy to
00:05:53
have the opportunity to be elected in
00:05:55
the first place. And so, if the House is
00:05:57
rigged, if if they if they're able to
00:05:59
scientifically engineer maps so that
00:06:00
Democrats are procluded from ever having
00:06:02
the opportunity to win, none of it
00:06:04
matters. So we can defend, we can we can
00:06:06
claim that we want to stand for
00:06:08
something. We can, you know, beat our
00:06:09
chest about, you know, standing up for
00:06:11
our values. But if we can't do it, if it
00:06:13
if there's no practical way, if there's
00:06:15
no method to actually be in power, then
00:06:17
none of that matters. And so this is the
00:06:18
whole ball game right here.
00:06:19
>> Ah, God bless you. We're about to
00:06:20
celebrate the 250th anniversary of our
00:06:22
founding fathers. Co-equal branches of
00:06:25
government, popular sovereignty, rule of
00:06:27
law. You're spot on. Everything you just
00:06:30
said is spot on. This is it. So, as far
00:06:32
as Utah's concerned, look, I will take
00:06:34
the good news any day of the week. And
00:06:36
I'm grateful for the attorneys who
00:06:38
argued this case and the judge who ruled
00:06:40
on this case, who deferred not to one
00:06:42
political party, but rather to the law.
00:06:44
But that is the exception and not the
00:06:46
rule. And so, recognizing that this is a
00:06:48
race to the bottom right now. We have
00:06:50
two choices. We can do nothing and allow
00:06:53
ourselves to be relegated to the
00:06:54
permanent minority out of deference to
00:06:56
good governance. Or we can live in
00:06:58
reality and fight fire with fire so that
00:07:00
we have a chance a chance at getting
00:07:02
back into power so that we can actually
00:07:04
stop this egregious consolidation of
00:07:06
power happening at the hands of Trump
00:07:07
and Republicans. But that does not
00:07:09
happen unless we fight. So I hope that
00:07:12
other governors and state legislators
00:07:13
are paying attention. I hope that other
00:07:15
governors and state legislators are
00:07:16
willing to meet this moment because we
00:07:18
have one shot here at fighting back
00:07:21
because once the GOP consolidates full
00:07:23
control, we won't have another chance.
00:07:25
Remember, you are not in office to
00:07:27
defend the institutions of government or
00:07:29
the procedural tools of government or
00:07:30
the norms of government. You are there
00:07:32
to serve the people. And if that means
00:07:34
relinquishing your reliance on the old
00:07:36
way of doing things and recognizing the
00:07:38
new battlefield that we're playing on,
00:07:40
then that's what needs to be done. And
00:07:42
again, it is essential that we do it now
00:07:45
while we have the opportunity because
00:07:46
once it's gone, it's doubtful it'll ever
00:07:48
come back.
00:07:53

00:08:01
But second, the reality is that we are
00:08:02
now in a political environment where
00:08:04
this administration can lean on any of
00:08:05
the social media platforms to suppress
00:08:07
certain voices if they don't like
00:08:08
critical coverage. That means my
00:08:10
longevity here is in the hands of a few
00:08:12
tech billionaires who are already making
00:08:14
it clear that they are willing to cater
00:08:15
to this administration. To that end,
00:08:18
signing up for my newsletter is a way
00:08:19
for me to reach you directly if that
00:08:21
ever becomes necessary. I'll put the

there's also an option to do a paid

00:08:28

Thanks so much for watching.
