The "I Want to Live" project of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War is publishing for the first time comprehensive statistics on more than 10,000 Russian servicemen captured during the full-scale invasion. The Coordinating Headquarters reports that, on average, 60 to 90 Russian Armed Forces service members surrender weekly, reaching 350 per week in August 2024. Since June 2023, Russian soldiers have been captured more often than Ukrainian soldiers. The largest number of prisoners were taken in the Pokrovsky and Bakhmutsky districts of the Donetsk region, Kursk region and the Polohovsky district of the Zaporizhzhia region. In 2025, the number of foreign mercenaries in captivity increased sharply. Every week, two to three prisoners are recruited from third countries. Overall, almost 7% of all Russian prisoners of war in Ukraine are foreigners from 40 countries. The Coordinating Staff also drew a typical social portrait of a captured Russian: a private, a previously convicted contract soldier. "The typical Russian prisoner of war is: 83% privates; 13% sergeants; almost 3% officers; ages 18 to 65; about 76% contract soldiers (including those recruited in prisons and PMCs); 19% mobilized; almost 5% conscripts," the Coordination Headquarters claims. Twenty-four percent of prisoners reported coercion or deception. Forty percent had criminal records, most often for theft, drug offenses, robbery and assault, grievous bodily harm, and murder. Only 7% have a higher education, while 30% did not even complete high school. Before the war, 38% were unemployed. Almost half have children, including 8% with three or more. Hundreds of people were captured with severe chronic diseases, including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, diabetes and mental disorders. The report also stated that, as part of the exchange for Ukrainian Defenders, just over 6,000 prisoners of war were returned to Russia, more than half of them in 2025. At least 237 former Russian prisoners are known to have died or gone missing after being exchanged and sent back to the front. Four Russian soldiers are currently in captivity for the second time. At the same time, the Russian side is selective in its citizens: they primarily take ethnic Russians, those who are healthy, and those who have not been in captivity for long. "Russia primarily takes ethnic Russians from captivity without serious injuries and with short captivity periods. The Russian Federation does not request foreign mercenaries for exchange. Thousands of Russian army prisoners of war, including the wounded, the sick, and conscripts, still remain in Ukraine. Russia has refused to exchange on the "all for all" principle for the fourth year running," the Coordinating Staff concluded. As previously reported, Russians who are captured face neglect from their compatriots and pressure and persecution from law enforcement. They are also sent back to the front. Earlier this year, one of the Russian occupiers was released from Ukrainian captivity. When the soldier called his family to tell them he was alive and already in Russia, he said he had to return in time for his son's birthday, but he never did.
