00:00:00
it is a stunning turn of events on the
00:00:02
3D anniversary of Russia's full-scale
00:00:04
invasion of its smaller neighbor Ukraine
00:00:07
at the UN General Assembly America sided
00:00:10
with Russia and North Korea in voting
00:00:13
against the resolution condemning
00:00:16
Russia's War it came as Emanuel macron
00:00:19
visited the White House for talks with
00:00:21
the French President saying Donald Trump
00:00:23
believed European peacekeepers would be
00:00:26
accepted by Russia as a security
00:00:28
guarantee underpinning any future deal
00:00:31
the French leader said he'd already
00:00:32
spoken to the UK about a deployment but
00:00:36
added that the solidarity and support of
00:00:38
America was crucial meanwhile world
00:00:41
leaders traveled to Kiev to pledge
00:00:43
further support for Ukraine with
00:00:45
President zalinski saying we hope we can
00:00:48
finish this war this year saki stama
00:00:51
addressed the summit via video link we
00:00:54
have full coverage for you with the
00:00:56
latest from Ukraine and we'll be live in
00:00:58
Moscow and at the UN in New York but
00:01:00
first Gary odonahue there our top story
00:01:03
from
00:01:06
[Music]
00:01:08
Washington it was an optimistic
00:01:10
president macron who came to the White
00:01:12
House today the first European leader to
00:01:14
head to Washington since president
00:01:16
Trump's
00:01:18
reelection his task an attempt to reach
00:01:21
a consensus over ending the war in
00:01:23
Ukraine and to stabilize the
00:01:25
transatlantic relationship which has
00:01:27
been severely tested again the
00:01:29
relationship has been very special with
00:01:31
France and very special with this
00:01:32
gentleman on my right it looked like the
00:01:34
old love romance between these two was
00:01:37
back but the differences weren't far
00:01:39
from the surface notably on the relative
00:01:41
contributions to Ukraine from the US and
00:01:44
Europe Europe is loaning the money to
00:01:47
Ukraine they get their money back no in
00:01:49
fact to be to be frank uh we paid we
00:01:52
paid 60% of the totally fought and it
00:01:55
was through like the US loans guarantee
00:01:58
grants and we we provided real money to
00:02:01
be clear but Donald Trump continues to
00:02:03
insist Ukraine hands over half its key
00:02:06
natural resources as compensation for
00:02:09
America's contribution and he says such
00:02:11
a deal with Ukraine's president zalinski
00:02:14
is close I will be meeting with
00:02:16
president zalinski in fact he may come
00:02:18
in this week or next week to sign the
00:02:21
agreement and which would be nice i' I'd
00:02:23
love to meet him would meet at the Oval
00:02:25
Office that issue of compensation is
00:02:28
another bone of contention between
00:02:29
between the US and Europe it was up to
00:02:32
Russia said the French President to pay
00:02:34
this work all us a lot of money and this
00:02:38
is the responsibility of Russia because
00:02:39
the aggressor is Russia where some
00:02:41
agreement appears to be emerging is on
00:02:43
the question of possible European
00:02:45
peacekeeping troops in Ukraine after a
00:02:48
truce something both France and the UK
00:02:51
are open to we also spoke about these
00:02:54
issues at L with the president we've
00:02:57
worked with President Zin and gotten to
00:03:00
some of the details of the various
00:03:03
phases of the negotiation and we've also
00:03:05
been able to speak about some of this
00:03:07
work with our British Partners
00:03:12
to talk about deployments of Peace
00:03:16
forces on Ukrainian soil which are part
00:03:19
of these security guarantees later
00:03:22
president macron said progress had been
00:03:24
made including on the question of troops
00:03:28
and now there's a clear American message
00:03:30
that the US as an ally is ready to
00:03:34
provide that solidarity for that
00:03:36
approach that's a turning point in my
00:03:38
view there is still no concrete proposal
00:03:41
for ending the war in Ukraine but
00:03:43
Europe's leaders will at least hope they
00:03:45
are now back at the negotiating
00:03:48
table Clive I think president macron and
00:03:51
other European leaders will take some
00:03:53
heart from today's meeting they are at
00:03:54
least back at the table and talking
00:03:57
however there were no reassurances from
00:03:59
the president on whether America would
00:04:01
provide any kind of security guarantee
00:04:03
and whether it would hold out for
00:04:05
Ukraine getting its land back bear in
00:04:07
mind of course last Friday president
00:04:10
Trump said president macron and prime
00:04:12
minister K stama had done nothing to end
00:04:15
this war now he's saying they're being a
00:04:17
great help his view his mood his
00:04:19
attitudes can change just like that
00:04:22
indeed all right Gary thank you Gary OD
00:04:24
Donahue they're live in
00:04:26
Washington well the United Nations
00:04:28
General Assembly did back a resolution
00:04:31
today strongly criticizing moscow's
00:04:33
actions and supporting Ukraine's
00:04:35
territorial Integrity Nal Fe is live in
00:04:38
New York for us now Nea history will
00:04:41
record that America despite supporting
00:04:44
Ukraine throughout the full scale
00:04:46
Invasion by Russia actually sided with
00:04:48
the Kremlin in today's
00:04:52
vote that's right Clive you know here at
00:04:55
the UN what was supposed to be a
00:04:57
symbolic moment to reaffirm Ukraine's
00:05:00
sovereignty and territorial Integrity as
00:05:03
it marks its third anniversary of the
00:05:05
Russian invasion instead turned into a
00:05:08
dramatic day of diplomatic tension among
00:05:11
allies you know you had the United
00:05:14
States not only siding with Russia
00:05:16
bellus and North Korea in the general
00:05:19
assembly but Washington went a step
00:05:22
further to produce its own competing
00:05:24
texts in the general assembly and in the
00:05:27
security Council and the British and
00:05:30
French ambassadors said that was done
00:05:32
without any warning or any negotiation
00:05:34
the Trump administration's language
00:05:36
didn't blame Russia for the uh Invasion
00:05:39
and it didn't reaffirm Ukraine's
00:05:41
territorial integrity and just a few
00:05:44
moments ago Clive the security Council
00:05:46
passed its first ever resolution on
00:05:49
Ukraine that watered down us text uh
00:05:53
because remember in the past Russia has
00:05:55
held a veto this time around that
00:05:57
resolution passed Europeans though are
00:05:59
saying there can be no peace when
00:06:02
aggression is rewarded all right Nea
00:06:04
thank you for that Nei they're live at
00:06:07
the UN in New
00:06:09
York well several world leaders gathered
00:06:11
in Kev today to offer their continuing
00:06:14
support for Ukraine in the face of
00:06:16
Russian aggression they pledge more
00:06:18
financial military and political help as
00:06:20
James Waterhouse reports now from
00:06:23
Kev in Ukraine the war is as impossible
00:06:27
to escape as the politics surrounding it
00:06:30
for president zilinski today was about
00:06:32
remembrance and rallying his remaining
00:06:35
allies but there was one big absentee
00:06:38
the US okay what followed were talks
00:06:41
about military support the likelihood of
00:06:44
Ukraine joining the European Union
00:06:46
perhaps they could be earlier than 2030
00:06:50
as well as the enforcing of any future
00:06:52
ceasefire and any settlement must be
00:06:55
based on a sovereign Ukraine backed up
00:06:58
with strong security
00:07:01
guarantees the UK is ready and willing
00:07:04
to support this with troops on the
00:07:06
ground welcome uh everyone to the first
00:07:09
G7 meeting of uh 2025 Canada Ukraine and
00:07:13
its European allies still have to work
00:07:15
out how to stand up to Russia in the
00:07:17
long term at a separate Gathering after
00:07:20
swerving questions about their
00:07:21
relationship President zensi issued this
00:07:24
call to Donald Trump directly president
00:07:27
Trump we would really like to to hear
00:07:30
from you because all of our people all
00:07:32
our us our families are very worried
00:07:35
will there be support from America for
00:07:38
our people for life in general it's so
00:07:40
important that American Support American
00:07:43
assistance Remains The Diplomatic chat
00:07:47
has continued tonight and there has been
00:07:49
some substance today but the tone has
00:07:52
very much been about picking Ukraine up
00:07:54
after two weeks of American foreign
00:07:56
policy that has rocked its war effort
00:07:59
nevertheless there still yet might be
00:08:01
scope for cooperation between Kiev and
00:08:05
Washington a deal that would give the us
00:08:07
access to Ukraine's natural resources in
00:08:10
return for security guarantees is
00:08:12
reportedly being finalized president
00:08:15
zelinsky has rejected previous drafts
00:08:18
calling it a debt which would take
00:08:19
generations to pay James waterhous BBC
00:08:23
News
00:08:24
Kev 3 years after this conflict began
00:08:28
there is a military stal on the
00:08:30
battlefield here's what Ukraine looked
00:08:32
like back in 2022 the areas in red are
00:08:36
under Russian military control 3 years
00:08:38
later you can see Russia has built a
00:08:41
corridor there down to Crimea but here
00:08:43
in purple Ukraine has managed to retake
00:08:47
most of the territory that was under
00:08:49
threat in the north well Jeremy Bowen
00:08:51
reports now on a nation determined to
00:08:54
keep fighting but praying for
00:08:56
peace cars destroyed in the fight for KV
00:09:00
3 years ago have been gathered into a
00:09:02
memorial in erpin the suburb where
00:09:04
Ukraine won the battle for its capital
00:09:07
next to the new bridge the ruins of the
00:09:10
old one between Kiev and Erin are also
00:09:14
preserved the Ukrainian Army blew the
00:09:17
bridge to stop Russian tanks using it
00:09:20
Ukraine's Western allies just like the
00:09:22
Kremlin expected these men would lose to
00:09:24
Russia within days or
00:09:27
weeks Russian shelling was in for
00:09:29
ukrainians it felt like the worst of
00:09:34
times it was a dangerous Journey for
00:09:36
thousands of civilians who used the
00:09:38
rubble as stepping stones to cross the
00:09:41
river into relative safety inside
00:09:44
Kev but the country rallied when the
00:09:47
Americans offered to evacuate president
00:09:49
zelinski he told them he needed
00:09:51
ammunition not a
00:09:54
ride zalinsky dawned military attire and
00:09:58
posted videos telling ukrainians he was
00:10:00
staying to lead the
00:10:04
fight but 3 years after they stopped the
00:10:07
Russian Invaders marked with a zed from
00:10:09
scoring a quick Victory the old
00:10:12
Ukrainian nightmare of national
00:10:13
Extinction is
00:10:18
back Ukraine's modernized Army is just
00:10:21
about holding its own here training near
00:10:23
their border with the Russian province
00:10:25
of KK their nightmare is Donald Trump
00:10:29
he's put restoring America's
00:10:31
relationship with Russia above Ukraine's
00:10:33
fight to stay independent and Trump has
00:10:36
repeated Russian
00:10:42
lies like the claim Ukraine started the
00:10:46
war Edward said Russia started it they
00:10:50
came to our home to kill us our sons our
00:10:53
daughters and our parents that is why we
00:10:55
are
00:10:57
fighting along the Border Ukrainian
00:11:00
troops are getting ready to rejoin the
00:11:02
battle in kusk a chunk of Russia it
00:11:05
seized last August and is fighting to
00:11:07
keep in the bunkers warm and dry these
00:11:10
men are facing the prospect of losing
00:11:12
the American support that has been vital
00:11:14
for three years Evan a squad leader and
00:11:18
a veteran of the war in KK says Ukraine
00:11:21
is making more weapons of its own and
00:11:23
they will keep
00:11:25
going it's good to get help from abroad
00:11:28
help won't last forever it's here today
00:11:31
it might beun
00:11:32
tomorrow soldiers here know that Putin
00:11:35
believes Ukraine belongs to Russia which
00:11:37
is why they're alarmed by talk of trump
00:11:40
making a deal with
00:11:42
him Putin wants to destroy our political
00:11:46
system and to make Ukraine his vassel
00:11:48
state are there any circumstances under
00:11:51
which Western countries the Americans
00:11:54
should trust President Putin yeah no no
00:11:58
I don't have enough fingers to count how
00:11:59
many times Putin lied to everyone to the
00:12:03
Russians and to us and to the West
00:12:06
fighting men in a snow covered Forest
00:12:09
it's a scene from Europe's past and the
00:12:12
challenge for leaders for diplomats is
00:12:15
to make sure it's not a scene from
00:12:17
Europe's future because it might
00:12:22
be the point the ukrainians
00:12:25
make is that if President Putin is able
00:12:28
to get what he wants by breaking
00:12:30
international law and going to war then
00:12:34
it won't be the last time not just for
00:12:36
him but for
00:12:40
others back in Kiev 3 years ago as the
00:12:43
barricades went up it was a straight
00:12:45
forward fight for survival for
00:12:47
ukrainians it still is but it is not
00:12:52
straightforward then volunteers signed
00:12:55
up to fight talking about protecting
00:12:57
their families
00:13:00
now that early enthusiasm has gone after
00:13:03
huge casualties and the authorities
00:13:05
pursue men who won't
00:13:07
fight demitro and Maxim then 18 and 19
00:13:11
both fought in the battle for Kiev Maxim
00:13:14
on the left served around 30 months in
00:13:16
Frontline
00:13:19
Combat 3 years on both fear Trump will
00:13:22
appeased Putin as Britain appeased Nazi
00:13:26
Germany before
00:13:27
1939 it is very dangerous moment for for
00:13:30
the entire world not only for Ukraine
00:13:33
even if uh United States will not
00:13:35
provide us any more weapons or uh other
00:13:39
support I think that uh Donald Trump
00:13:42
wants to become like a new Chamberland
00:13:45
who uh like signed some treaty with
00:13:48
Hitler and uh we all know what what it
00:13:52
was in the result but uh I think that uh
00:13:55
Mr Trump should be more focused on
00:13:58
becoming like somebody like Churchill
00:14:01
three years ago you were young guys
00:14:03
volunteering for the Army you must have
00:14:05
changed everyone changed uh and I I have
00:14:10
changed
00:14:12
uh I think that uh every Ukrainian and
00:14:16
mean person uh matured during this uh
00:14:21
three years uh everyone who entered
00:14:25
military and everyone who uh was
00:14:29
fighting for such a long time
00:14:31
drastically
00:14:34
changed the cost of this war is heavy
00:14:36
but not so unbearable that either side
00:14:38
will Su for peace it is about more than
00:14:41
controlling land it's about existence
00:14:43
for these ukrainians staying independent
00:14:46
Putin is fighting them for Russia's
00:14:49
place in the world and that's why making
00:14:51
a peace deal might be impossible and now
00:14:54
for the ukrainians and their European
00:14:57
Partners the sense that Trump's America
00:15:00
isn't just an unreliable Ally it might
00:15:04
be no kind of Ally at
00:15:06
all Jeremy Bowen BBC News in
00:15:11

00:15:13
discussing major economic deals with the

uh Vladimir Putin has been speaking this

evening Steve what's he been

00:15:28
up unexpectedly late tonight on Russian
00:15:31
State television they interrupted
00:15:33
regular programs for this and he
00:15:35
proceeded to say lots of things that
00:15:37
Donald Trump will like uh there was lots
00:15:39
of flattery he said president Trump did
00:15:42
not act on emotion he had a rational
00:15:44
approach to what was happening there was
00:15:46
lots of Praise he praised Donald Trump's
00:15:49
uh idea for America Russia and China to
00:15:53
slash uh defense spending and there were
00:15:55
offers of big money project cooperation
00:15:59
in Russia and America for example in the
00:16:01
aluminium industry I think when it comes
00:16:03
to dealing with the US president the
00:16:06
kmin leader knows exactly which buttons
00:16:08
to press but what about the war in
00:16:10
Ukraine and the prospects for peace well
00:16:13
from what the Russian foreign minister
00:16:15
Sergey lavro was saying earlier today it
00:16:17
doesn't sound as if Moscow is in any
00:16:20
hurry to sign on to a ceasefire he said
00:16:22
this we will cease hostilities only when
00:16:25
negotiations provide a firm lasting
00:16:28
result that suits the Russian Federation
00:16:31
until then Russia fights on confident I
00:16:34
think that it can seize more Ukrainian
00:16:37
territory

Description:

French President Emmanuel Macron told Donald Trump that peace must not mean the surrender of Ukraine, at a news conference with the US President at the White House. The two leaders were meeting to discuss the war in Ukraine on the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of the country. The French leader interrupted President Trump to correct him, after Mr Trump said Europe's financial assistance to Ukraine was in the form of loans. Mr Macron said that was not the case as most of the money had been given to Ukraine by Europe. Earlier, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said he hoped “we can finish the war this year”. He was speaking at a summit of western leaders meeting in Kyiv to show their support for his country. At the United Nations in New York, the General Assembly agreed a resolution - drafted by the EU and the UK - to mark the anniversary of the war. It reaffirmed the UN's "commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine". The US opposed the resolution alongside Russia and North Korea, supporting a resolution which made no reference to backing Ukraine's territorial integrity and referred to Russia's invasion as a "conflict". Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Gary O’Donoghue in Washington, Nada Tawfik at the United Nations in New York, James Waterhouse in Kyiv, Jeremy Bowen on the frontline in Ukraine and Steve Rosenberg in Moscow.
