00:00:00
Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk has
00:00:02
confirmed that Russian drones were shot
00:00:04
down in Polish airspace overnight. He
00:00:06
said it was the first time this had
00:00:08
happened in NATO territory. Mr. Tusk
00:00:11
called it a largecale provocation and
00:00:13
said he was ready to repel such
00:00:16
provocations. Well, Mr. Tusk has been
00:00:18
meeting with defense and security
00:00:20
officials to discuss the violations. He
00:00:22
said that although the search for drones
00:00:24
is ongoing, there was no reason to panic
00:00:27
and the situation is now under control.
00:00:29
Now, the incursions happened during
00:00:31
Russian attacks on targets in Ukraine.
00:00:33
And Ukraine's President Zilinski said it
00:00:35
set an extremely dangerous precedent for
00:00:38
Europe. Russia is yet to comment. So,
00:00:41
let's cross over live to Warsord, the
00:00:44
Polish capital to speak to my colleague
00:00:45
Adam Eastston. And although the ongoing
00:00:48
situation is now descaled, Adam,
00:00:50
obviously this is a huge concern.
00:00:57
Yes, Casha, this is obviously not the
00:01:00
first time that Russian drones have
00:01:02
violated Polish airspace, but this is
00:01:04
the first time that Polish and NATO
00:01:08
allied military aircraft, the Dutch uh
00:01:10
F35s are currently stationed in Poland,
00:01:14
engaged Russian drones and shot them
00:01:16
down. This is the first time as prime
00:01:18
prime minister uh Tus said in his uh
00:01:21
remarks ahead of the government crisis
00:01:23
meeting. Um this he described as
00:01:26
probably a largecale provocation by
00:01:30
Moscow. Now uh the authorities in Minsky
00:01:33
in Bellerus where we know that two of
00:01:36
these drones have been discovered u
00:01:39
Polish police have confirmed one and
00:01:42
local authorities have confirmed another
00:01:44
landed without causing any casualties
00:01:46
but damage to one house quite close to
00:01:48
the Bellar Russian border with Poland in
00:01:51
eastern Poland. Um uh we know that the
00:01:54
authorities in Minsk have said that they
00:01:56
alerted Polish uh the Polish military
00:01:59
that the drones had gone off course and
00:02:03
were uh a heading towards Poland. But
00:02:06
the significance of this although no
00:02:08
casualties have been reported Mr. Tusk
00:02:10
said this is the first time that so many
00:02:14
drones we don't know exactly how many uh
00:02:16
President Zalinski in Ukraine said
00:02:18
eight. uh Donald Tusk said uh a large
00:02:22
number had entered Polish airspace,
00:02:24
violating Polish airspace and had
00:02:27
actually been shot down. So that's the
00:02:29
first time that this has happened and uh
00:02:31
the Polish military called it an
00:02:33
unprecedented act of aggression.
00:02:36
>> So tell me, Adam, then we're not 100%
00:02:38
sure if this was a deliberate uh attempt
00:02:43
for Russian drones to stray into Polish
00:02:46
airspace. Whatever has happened, however
00:02:50
this has got to this position, Donald
00:02:52
Tuska and Carol Navrosky, the new
00:02:54
president, they're going to have to be
00:02:55
working together in order to try and
00:02:59
work out how best to deal with this
00:03:02
situation.
00:03:06
>> That's right, Cashia. Um, Mr. Tusk and
00:03:08
President Navrosky have already met this
00:03:10
morning in a meeting of the National
00:03:12
Security Bureau and they are
00:03:15
coordinating there. They are from
00:03:17
different political camps. Of course,
00:03:19
their opponents on the domestic
00:03:21
political scene, but when it comes to
00:03:23
national security, they're on the same
00:03:25
side. And they're uh their comments this
00:03:27
morning suggesting a joint effort in
00:03:31
terms of response to uh these incursions
00:03:34
uh um overnight. Um, as I said, this is
00:03:37
not the first time Poland uh has uh uh
00:03:40
has been the victim of u missile attacks
00:03:43
from uh uh from the war, Russia's uh
00:03:46
full-scale war in Ukraine. Two Polish
00:03:48
citizens have been killed just after the
00:03:50
war started in 2022
00:03:53
just near the Ukrainian border by the
00:03:55
debris of of a missile which landed uh
00:03:58
in on the Polish territory. And also
00:04:00
once there was a Russian cruise missile
00:04:03
reportedly um went all the way to
00:04:06
central Poland hundreds of kilometers
00:04:08
over from the Bellarussian border and
00:04:11
landed near the city of Bidgosh. And
00:04:13
this wasn't even discovered until months
00:04:15
later by a woman riding a horse in a
00:04:18
forest. She discovered it. This was
00:04:19
under the uh the previous government.
00:04:21
So, and as recently as last weekend,
00:04:24
we've had reports of uh drones or
00:04:27
unidentified flying objects landing in
00:04:29
Poland. So, this is uh not an uncommon
00:04:32
situation. What is uncommon today is how
00:04:35
many drones have uh violated Polish
00:04:38
airspace and also that they've been shot
00:04:40
down for the first time.
00:04:41
>> Okay, Adam, as always, many thanks for
00:04:43
that update. Adam Eastern there, my
00:04:45
colleague joining us live from Warsaw.
00:04:47
So uh of course also important to say
00:04:49
that the airports have now been opened.
00:04:52
Warsaw's main shop airport had been
00:04:55
closed. Uh let's cross over to Kev. My
00:04:58
colleague Sarah Reignsford joins us live
00:04:59
now. And Sarah, this this encroachment
00:05:02
of these drones into Polish airspace.
00:05:04
Obviously a huge worry. This is off the
00:05:06
back of a large attack overnight raid of
00:05:11
strikes across Ukraine.
00:05:16
Yeah, that's exactly right. That is the
00:05:18
context. This was part of a massive
00:05:20
Russian aerial attack on Ukraine where
00:05:23
Ukraine is saying more than 400 drones
00:05:26
were launched by Russia and more than 40
00:05:28
missiles uh were also fired. So here in
00:05:31
Ukraine, people spent the night yet
00:05:33
again in shelters in bunkers protecting
00:05:36
themselves from that attack. back. And
00:05:37
it was as people here were following the
00:05:40
progress of missiles and drones on
00:05:42
Telegram channels, Telegram channels,
00:05:44
you know, on the internet, looking at
00:05:46
where those things were heading, that
00:05:47
they began to see some of them heading
00:05:49
towards Poland. It was around about, I
00:05:51
think, 1:00 in the morning here in
00:05:53
Ukraine when I saw that chatter and I
00:05:56
saw people saying, "Look, these drones
00:05:57
are heading some 50 kilometers into
00:06:00
Polish territory." And that for me was a
00:06:02
new uh turn I think in this war because
00:06:05
drones have strayed across the border
00:06:07
into Poland before. They've never been
00:06:09
shot down and I don't think they've ever
00:06:11
been this deep in Polish territory
00:06:14
before so far as we've been told. So I
00:06:16
think you know the fact that jets were
00:06:18
scrambled not just to monitor the skies
00:06:20
but to shoot those drones down was quite
00:06:23
a change. And here in Ukraine, you know,
00:06:24
in the past there has been quite a lot
00:06:26
of frustration uh with Poland's handling
00:06:28
of uh you know, the the the threat on
00:06:31
its border, if you like, because in the
00:06:32
past, as I say, they have scrambled
00:06:34
jets, but in some cases, they've kind of
00:06:36
watched as the threat has turned back
00:06:38
towards Ukraine. And then those missiles
00:06:40
and drones, of course, hit here in
00:06:42
Ukraine. So this time it is different.
00:06:44
This time Poland itself is saying that
00:06:46
it was essentially under attack. It's
00:06:48
called this an act of aggression and
00:06:50
Poland did take decisive action. So I
00:06:52
think the question here is what happens
00:06:55
next and Ukraine certainly is pushing uh
00:06:57
for a tough tough response from Poland
00:07:00
saying this is Russia testing the West
00:07:02
pushing it to its limits and trying to
00:07:04
see uh how the West will respond.
00:07:06
>> Yeah. And arguably Vladimir Zalinski
00:07:09
frustrated that despite uh efforts by
00:07:13
Donald Trump to get him and Putin round
00:07:16
the table to come up with some kind of
00:07:19
ceasefire and peace deal. the Russians
00:07:23
continue with these largecale attacks.
00:07:28
>> Yeah. And and I think we should point
00:07:30
out that the the attacks have escalated
00:07:32
since the attempt by Donald Trump to uh
00:07:36
negotiate some kind of peace to get uh
00:07:38
Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zilinski to
00:07:40
the talking tables. In fact, since uh
00:07:42
Donald Trump rolled out the red carpet
00:07:45
in Alaska for Vladimir Putin, the
00:07:47
attacks here on Ukraine have escalated.
00:07:49
So people have been living uh with this
00:07:51
increased danger and you know when you
00:07:53
hear the drones overhead you hear them
00:07:55
buzzing you don't know where they're
00:07:56
going to hit. It is extremely scary for
00:07:59
people here in Ukraine and then the
00:08:00
missiles too which have followed 40
00:08:02
missiles last night and just last
00:08:05
weekend we know that one of those
00:08:06
missiles slammed into the main
00:08:08
government building here uh in Kiev.
00:08:10
There was no one there. It was the
00:08:11
middle of the night, but still I think
00:08:13
that was again seen as a symbolic kind
00:08:15
of escalation by Russia. Really, I think
00:08:18
testing uh Kiev and Ukraine's resolve,
00:08:21
but also its allies in the west, just
00:08:23
seeing what response there will be.
00:08:25
Because of course, Donald Trump has
00:08:26
promised all sorts of tough uh action
00:08:29
against Moscow. But ever since he rolled
00:08:31
out that carpet, ever since Vladimir
00:08:32
Putin has done nothing to come to the
00:08:34
talking table, the tough response hasn't
00:08:36
happened either. So, I think in Ukraine,
00:08:38
that's what they're waiting for. What
00:08:40
will the West do next?
00:08:42
>> Indeed, Sarah, as always, thank you very
00:08:44
much. Sarah Reignsford, our Eastern
00:08:45
Europe correspondent, talking to us uh
00:08:47
from Kev. And just a number of lines
00:08:49
coming out uh when it comes to those
00:08:51
drones that were uh intercepted over
00:08:54
Polish airspace. Italy's foreign
00:08:56
minister has said that Italy firmly
00:08:58
condemns the violation of Polish
00:09:00
territory by Russian drones. Very
00:09:03
serious and unacceptable event. And the
00:09:05
question is whether this was a targeted
00:09:08
whether this was Russia pushing forward
00:09:12
or was this um stray drones. And we've
00:09:16
got a line from Bellarus saying that the
00:09:19
Russian drones lost their way and
00:09:21
entered Poland after being jammed by
00:09:23
Ukrainian defenses. the chief of the
00:09:25
general staff for the Bellarussian armed
00:09:26
forces uh saying issuing a statement
00:09:29
saying that Bellaris warned Poland about
00:09:31
them which allowed the Polish side to
00:09:33
respond promptly to the actions of the
00:09:35
drones by scrambling their forces on
00:09:39
duty and I think that's going to be the
00:09:40
really big question over that's the side
00:09:43
of the Bellar Russians that's what their
00:09:45
suggestion is obviously Bellarus and
00:09:47
Minsk very in line and in step with what
00:09:50
the Kremlin are saying so just to caveat
00:09:54
what Bellerus is saying that the Russian
00:09:56
drones lost their way. So, of course, uh
00:09:59
much more details on this, an ongoing
00:10:01
story, lots of reaction coming up. We've
00:10:03
got a live page on our website as well,
00:10:05
and we'll be coming back throughout the
00:10:07
day to this ongoing story. But just to
00:10:10
say, uh, airports now open back in
00:10:13
Warsaw, but there could be some flight
00:10:16
delays.

Description:

Poland's prime minister said a “huge number” of Russian drones violated the country's airspace during strikes on western Ukraine. Speaking ahead of an emergency meeting, Donald Tusk said “this is the first time Russian drones have been shot down over the territory of a Nato country”. A military operation has ended after Polish and Nato aircraft were deployed and most airports have reopened - Russia has yet to comment. The drones that entered Poland were part of the latest major aerial attack on Ukraine, where Russia launched 415 drones overnight. Ukraine's President Zelensky said "at least eight strike drones" were aimed towards Poland, and called the escalation an “extremely dangerous precedent for Europe”.
