might just be one of the most unique00:03:01
entries into the genre and it is00:03:05

started watching this uh and it's quite00:03:07
brand new i think there's only about two00:03:09
or three episodes that are out so far00:03:10
but i watched the first two episodes00:03:12
because again i had heard of the manga i00:03:14
hadn't actually read it yet and uh i00:03:16
heard that there was quite a bit of a00:03:18
murmur a stir in the anime community00:03:20
concerning this particular series so00:03:22
considering that it is spooky season i00:03:24
figured i would give it a go and give00:03:25
you my first impressions on the first00:03:27
couple of episodes and uh let me tell00:03:28
you this is00:03:30
a very strange horror anime it's almost00:03:33
like a parody on horror anime but at the00:03:36
same time it's trying to be a serious00:03:38
horror anime as well i can't again00:03:40
compare it to the original manga source00:03:42
material because i haven't read it but00:03:44
just from watching the anime there were00:03:46
some scenes that i thought were00:03:48
genuinely unnerving especially that bus00:03:50
stop scene i don't know who directed it00:03:52
but there were some directorial shots00:03:53
that straight up reminded me of like an00:03:54
ariasta film the use of like silence00:03:57
instead of these foreboding now very00:04:00
cliche types of booming sounds to convey00:04:03
something scary has happened instead00:04:05
just opting to use silence to show00:04:07
something really creepy definitely very00:04:09
arias device and i feel a lot more00:04:11
effective especially in the horror anime00:04:14
format as well the artwork is absolutely00:04:16
brilliant pashone really kicked it out00:04:18
of the park when it comes to not just00:04:20
giving off the creepy vibes and stuff00:04:22
like that but also just the character00:04:23
designs are really nice but around00:04:25
episode 2 was where i started to kind of00:04:27
scratch my head because there were just00:04:29
like you know terrifying ghost scenes00:04:32
but at the same time and around the same00:04:35
level of terrifyingly uh00:04:38
sexualized scenes as well i don't00:04:40
exactly remember the scene but there was00:04:42
one where one minute they're showing00:04:44
this like seven head ghost which is00:04:47
quite creepy and literally the next shot00:04:49
is like00:04:50
a panty shot i don't know if they're00:04:52
trying to go for like the comedy route00:04:54
or they're just trying to be ironic in00:04:56
the sense that they really love to over00:04:59
sexualize the main two girls and look00:05:01
i'm not going to come out here and say00:05:02
how dare you over sexualize anime girls00:05:05
but i just feel in the context of horror00:05:08
it's still a little bit jarring i mean00:05:10
it's not the first time we've seen a00:05:11
horror itchy combination look at things00:05:14
like high school the dead and literally00:05:16
every nsfl handy but i thought it was an00:05:19
interesting combination i can see why a00:05:20
lot of people are kind of talking about00:05:22
it also am i the only one that thinks00:05:24
that the opening to miyako chan is very00:05:28
similar to the opening to mario holik00:05:30
the use of the colors and the direction00:05:33
and just the chaotic good vibes but also00:05:36
dark undertones hiding within the good00:05:39
vibes definitely reminded me of the00:05:41
mario holic opening which is good00:05:42
because i [ __ ] loved mario holik as a00:05:44
series that opening is an absolute00:05:46
banger so more openings like that please00:05:49
anime industry overall i'm looking00:05:51

would kind of dig through into my horror00:06:43
manga catalog and give you guys two00:06:46
series but let's start off with an00:06:48
absolute classic and it is probably the00:06:51
forefather of modern horror manga and is00:06:55
a series that i think a lot of modern00:06:57
horror manga has definitely been00:06:58
influenced by in one way or another and00:07:00
that is ito jinji's tomie now if you're00:07:04
a fan of yuto jinji or if you're a fan00:07:05
of horror manga you would know this [ __ ]00:07:08
is legendary status if um is the00:07:11
grandfather of harumanga ito junji is00:07:14
like his son ito junji now is quite00:07:17
infamous in the manga world with works00:07:19
such as uzumaki gyo and other short00:07:22
stories that are absolutely terrifying00:07:24
but the one that started it all is tomie00:07:27
and i figured i would give tomia a shout00:07:29
out in this video and give it a little00:07:31
introduction to you guys who want to i00:07:33
guess take your first step into the00:07:35
possibilities that the horror manga00:07:37
world has to offer to you the general00:07:39
concept of tomie is you have this girl00:07:43
on the cover right here known as tomie00:07:45
who gets killed in a really brutal and00:07:48
quite devastating way he she basically00:07:50
gets killed by her entire class and00:07:53
because of that she has become a00:07:56
vengeful spirit or what rather something00:07:58
otherworldly in that after her00:08:00
classmates accidentally quote unquote00:08:02
kill her and cut up her body into like00:08:06
50 pieces and to scatter it all around00:08:08
japan to hide the evidence basically her00:08:10
vengeful spirit makes it so that from00:08:13
those cut up pieces grows00:08:16
another tom here basically she starts to00:08:18
clone herself with her parts and kind of00:08:22
becomes this alluring witch of a00:08:23
character where any guy that sees tomie00:08:26
immediately falls in love with her falls00:08:28
into her mind tricks her mind trap and00:08:32
commits horrible crimes and kills people00:08:34
and does really [ __ ] up stuff and00:08:36
there is a number of people who are00:08:37
trying to get to the bottom of it there00:08:38
are a number of people whose life's been00:08:40
devastated by these tomier clones or and00:08:43
at the end of it all we really don't00:08:45
know what tomiye is00:08:46
there really is no like concrete00:08:48
conclusion as to what tomia is why she00:08:52
became this way but that is and for00:08:54
those of you who have read jujiton manga00:08:56
series you would know that is like the00:08:58
cream of the crop when it comes to ito00:09:00
junji manga there is no concrete00:09:03
conclusion to his stories and that's00:09:05
what makes it so terrifying it's that00:09:07
fear of the uncertain the fear of the00:09:10
unknown that really creeps up on you the00:09:12
more you read their manga and tomie has00:09:15
some absolutely00:09:17
legendary scenes uh there is one scene00:09:20
i'm sure you've seen it in like uh forum00:09:22
posts and on t-shirts and stuff like00:09:25
that on artboards and stuff like that00:09:26
but there is a this picture from the00:09:29
tomia manga that has become absolutely00:09:31
infamous and it is i think out of any uh00:09:34
itaujunji body horror macabre type of00:09:37
imagery this tomier panel still to this00:09:41
day has to be one of the most gruesome00:09:43
and brutal and just or inspiring of00:09:47
anything that itojunji has made in my00:09:49
humble opinion and tomia yes while it is00:09:52
a series quantum quote it is more so a00:09:54
collection of short stories revolving00:09:56
around this tom yeah girl who keeps00:09:59
cloning herself and keeps bringing00:10:02
devastation to every life that runs into00:10:04
one of her clones and again if you'd00:10:06
like to see the beginnings of the father00:10:09
now what is considered the father of00:10:10
modern horror manga ito junji how his00:10:13
art has evolved and how he had such an00:10:15
amazing grasp of body horror and macabre00:10:19
horror and just very supernatural00:10:22
uncertain00:10:23
mind-bending manipulating horror then i00:10:27
think tomier is a great first entry to00:10:30
anyone who wants to get into not just00:10:32
itojunji's stuff but just into the00:10:34
horror manga genre in general and the00:10:36
second horror manga that i would like to00:10:38
show off to you guys is one that i've00:10:40
had on the back burner for quite a while00:10:43
i've actually bought all the volumes of00:10:44
this quite a while ago and by quite a00:10:46
while ago i mean like three or four00:10:48
years ago but it wasn't until recently00:10:50
when i decided that i was going to kind00:10:52
of dig up more of the underground lesser00:10:55
known horror manga for this video that i00:10:58
remembered that i had all these volumes00:10:59
and i thought oh i haven't actually read00:11:01
this yet you know what perfect let me00:11:03
give it a go if it sucks i'll find00:11:05
something else but maybe this might be00:11:07
good because this author does have a00:11:09
very good back catalogue of great00:11:11
material and sweet lord baby jesus i was00:11:14
not expecting this manga to be so00:11:18
[ __ ] amazing and it is almost a crime00:11:22
that this manga is not talked about more00:11:25
than it is of course this isn't like the00:11:27
most underground horror manga ever there00:11:30
are people who obviously have found it00:11:32
have been talking about it especially00:11:34
because the author has gotten more00:11:36
famous since this series but it is00:11:39
simply titled00:11:41
happiness this is a manga created by one00:11:44
oshimizu if you're familiar with the00:11:47
underground manga world then you might00:11:49
have recognized that name oshimi shuzo00:11:51
is most famously00:11:53
known to be the creator of one00:11:56
bakunohana or the flowers of evil which00:11:58
got a anime adaptation which became00:12:00
quite uh dividing in the anime world uh00:12:03
but everyone who read the original manga00:12:04
can argue that it is an incredible00:12:07
incredible psychological horror series00:12:09
and happiness is done by the same guy00:12:12
and uh really takes the whole [ __ ] up00:12:15
factor00:12:16
to an 11. basic premise follows a high00:12:18
school kid who gets bullied a lot he has00:12:21
his classes on he's kind of like the the00:12:23
school nerd he really wishes for another00:12:25
life he really wishes for00:12:27
some happiness and one night as he is00:12:29
walking back from school he is suddenly00:12:31
attacked by00:12:32
a vampire girl and supposedly00:12:35
dies by getting his blood sucked from00:12:39
his neck but for some reason the vampire00:12:41
girl instead of killing our main00:12:42
character decides to let him live which00:12:45
in turn turns him also into a vampire00:12:48
and from there as he slowly starts to00:12:50
realize that his body is changing he00:12:52
doesn't like to eat regular foods his00:12:55
thirst for blood grows more and more to00:12:57
the point where he almost kills his00:12:59
entire family but at the same time these00:13:02
vampiric powers also give him the chance00:13:05
to change his life for the better he00:13:07
beats up the school bully in fact he00:13:09
befriends the school bully from respect00:13:11
and it seems like his life is getting00:13:13
happier and happier until he realizes00:13:15
that he is still this vampire and he has00:13:18
to decide whether to continue fighting00:13:20
the urge to kill someone and live on as00:13:22
a normal human being who has now gained00:13:24
a little bit more happiness than before00:13:26
the attack or to leave all of their life00:13:28
behind and live in solitude as a vampire00:13:32
now just hearing that premise i know00:13:33
what most of you are thinking this00:13:35
sounds like tokyo ghoul and not gonna00:13:37
lie when i was looking up on youtube of00:13:40
uh any person who has actually read and00:13:42
it was talking about this manga most if00:13:45
not every single video i saw said the00:13:48
exact same thing and not gonna lie00:13:51
that infuriated the [ __ ] out of me00:13:53
because as much as i love the tokyo goal00:13:55
manga from what i've read i haven't read00:13:57
all of it obviously as much as i love00:13:59
what i have read of the tokyo manga and00:14:01
how solid of a manga tokyo ghoul is i00:14:04

tokugawa fans are getting gonna get on00:14:07

say comparing tokyo go to this manga is00:14:12
like comparing apples and oranges00:14:13
because tokyo ghoul is very much a00:14:15
shonen type of series of the same take00:14:19
with the kagune and the power ups and00:14:21
the wacky main villains and all that00:14:24
kind of stuff which is amazing on its00:14:25
own don't get me wrong like the action00:14:27
sequences and the the cognate and the00:14:29
weapons and stuff like that [ __ ] dope00:14:31
concept but happiness doesn't have any00:14:34
of that in fact it is probably one of00:14:36
the most grounded to reality vampire00:14:40
psychological horror series that i have00:14:42
ever read because once you finish00:14:43
reading this manga the meaning of the00:14:46
title happiness completely changes it00:14:49
does a full 180 when you witness what00:14:52
some if not all of the characters in00:14:54
this manga have to go through to even00:14:56
get one step closer to their own00:14:58
happiness there are some scenes that are00:15:00
absolutely00:15:02
[ __ ] like so [ __ ] to the point that00:15:04
again tokyo girl wishes it could get00:15:07
this [ __ ] up in concept but i don't00:15:09
think it ever will honestly if i had to00:15:10
compare this manga to another manga i00:15:13
would actually compare this manga00:15:15
something closer to fire punch by00:15:18
fujimototsuki just based on the whole00:15:20
concept the psychological concept of00:15:22
what it means to be human what does00:15:24
happiness mean what is00:15:26
helping others to help yourself mean00:15:28
what does all of that psychological00:15:30
aspects and physiological aspect mean to00:15:33
a character that has endured every type00:15:36
of hell and has endured some of the most00:15:38
messed up [ __ ] that has happened to00:15:40
their lives that is completely out of00:15:42
their control oshimi shuzo is a really00:15:44
interesting manga artist because he00:15:46
definitely relies more on silent panels00:15:49
than he does dialogue to express emotion00:15:52
for anyone who has actually read any00:15:54
other stuff by oshimi shinzo such as the00:15:56
aforementioned akunohana and the more00:15:57
recent chino watashi is also which is00:15:59
also a [ __ ] amazing psychological00:16:01
horror his facial expressions are some00:16:04
of the most00:16:05
creepy things to come out in all of00:16:07
manga like i was just talking about like00:16:09
the macabre body horror that itojunji00:16:12
has no that like that is a different00:16:14
type of scary some of the things that00:16:16
are happening to these characters are00:16:17
just genuinely [ __ ] up and there is no00:16:20
other way to explain that so if anything00:16:22
i would be really careful when going00:16:24
into this manga because uh yeah it gets00:16:27
really messed up and there are so many00:16:29
twists and turns throughout the story00:16:31
and there are so many plot twists00:16:33
throughout the story that i genuinely00:16:35
did not see coming because i had no idea00:16:37
where this story was going until it went00:16:39
in that direction but i did not expect00:16:41
that direction to be off a cliff00:16:44
crashing down and then rising up again00:16:47
like a phoenix to do it all again for a00:16:49
manga that is called happiness there is00:16:51
not a single time that you will feel00:16:54
happiness right from the beginning all00:16:57
the way up until the end there is00:16:58
nothing happy about this manga but00:17:01
without giving the spoilers away00:17:03
obviously because i want you guys to00:17:04
experience this blind you will i think00:17:06
have a pretty good understanding of why00:17:08
