00:00:01
video if you've ever done any
00:00:03
improvising on your instrument
00:00:04
specifically improvising over different
00:00:06
chord changes of a song you know that
00:00:08
chords can move pretty quick sometimes
00:00:10
it can be tricky to connect those chords
00:00:12
together with the movement all the time
00:00:13
and it's hard to sometimes make a
00:00:15
melodic solo through those chords but
00:00:17
what I think sometimes is even harder
00:00:19
than that is static Harmony where the
00:00:21
chords really don't move that much think
00:00:24
about the song Impressions by John
00:00:25
Coltrane or So What by Miles Davis both
00:00:28
those songs only utilize two chords
00:00:30
concert D Minor concert E flat minor in
00:00:32
fact the concert D Minor makes up three
00:00:34
quarters of the tune it makes up 24 of
00:00:37
the 32 measures of that song that could
00:00:39
be pretty tricky because the chords
00:00:41
aren't guiding you to what to play
00:00:42
sometimes if you're aiming for certain
00:00:44
chord tones like the third here or the
00:00:46
fifth there seven to third motion you
00:00:48
can actually get through chords that
00:00:49
move pretty well but how do you create
00:00:52
that motion how do you create that
00:00:54
interest how you create that Melody when
00:00:55
you're sitting on one chord for so long
00:00:57
well I thought about this and I was like
00:00:58
well how can I go about this maybe I'll
00:01:00
play one chord for an entire chorus 32
00:01:02
bars and then I was like wow what if I
00:01:04
push that even further you saw the title
00:01:07
of this video and you saw the thumbnail
00:01:08
yes I'm gonna be playing over one chord
00:01:11
concert C minor seven for one hour I've
00:01:16
never done anything like this before and
00:01:17
I honestly don't know what to expect so
00:01:19
I'll catch up with you afterwards and
00:01:21
give you my final thoughts on it but I
00:01:23
know it's going to be pretty difficult
00:01:24
like I said a little earlier creating
00:01:26
that motion creating Melody creating
00:01:28
interest over one static Harmony over
00:01:31
even 24 bars can be tough but now over
00:01:34
an hour that's gonna be really tricky I
00:01:37
know that the things I'm gonna be
00:01:38
focusing on are Melody motifs and then
00:01:41
all those other non-note musical
00:01:42
elements like Rhythm Dynamics
00:01:45
articulation and other things yes just
00:01:47
like the thumbnail shows I'm gonna be
00:01:49
playing 2 700 measures of C minor seven
00:01:54
how did I figure out that number well
00:01:55
I'm gonna be doing it at 180 beats per
00:01:58
minute that means there are three B
00:01:59
beats in every second we know that there
00:02:02
are 3 600 seconds in an hour so if you
00:02:04
multiply 3 by 3600 you get 10 800 and
00:02:09
that's how many beats I'll be playing
00:02:10
I'm gonna be playing this in four four
00:02:12
so that means there's four beats in
00:02:14
every measure so I'm going to take 10
00:02:15
800 divided by four and that's
00:02:19
2700 measures did I need to do a full
00:02:22
hour of this to demonstrate this no is
00:02:24
it insane yes am I gonna run out of
00:02:27
ideas yes but I wanted to challenge
00:02:29
myself for this and I wanted to see what
00:02:32
happens I'm going to be putting
00:02:33
timestamps in the description down below
00:02:35
because even if you don't sit through
00:02:36
the entire hour and I don't blame you if
00:02:38
you don't want to I want you to jump
00:02:40
ahead to hear my final thoughts because
00:02:42
I also have a challenge for you here we
00:02:44
go now gonna play one chord for an hour

01:02:53
thank you
01:03:00
well I did it
01:03:03
that was uh that was really tough uh for
01:03:06
a number of reasons which you might
01:03:08
guess
01:03:10
um I've definitely never done anything
01:03:11
like that before I've put parameters on
01:03:14
myself like Solo in one style or so solo
01:03:16
over one chord for a while but never for
01:03:19
an hour straight just you know straight
01:03:22
through one thing that was tough that
01:03:23
might surprise some of you it's just the
01:03:25
the endurance because I don't really
01:03:27
practice that much
01:03:30
um I practice for things that I need to
01:03:33
practice for
01:03:34
um but I definitely don't sit down and
01:03:35
put in hours every day so to play for an
01:03:37
hour straight like that was pretty tough
01:03:39
another thing obviously is is the
01:03:41
Harmony and it's not so much thinking of
01:03:45
things to play because you know you as
01:03:47
you heard if you listen to some of it
01:03:50
um I didn't just play like you know the
01:03:52
notes of C natural minor or C during or
01:03:55
whatever I played all 12 notes I played
01:03:57
every single note on this accident so
01:03:58
it's you know creating those different
01:04:00
sounds and the shapes and colors that
01:04:02
wasn't as hard what was harder was just
01:04:04
hearing
01:04:06
that same chord over and over and over
01:04:10
again like it was like driving me nuts
01:04:13
honestly it was weird it was a weird
01:04:15
feeling after a while like I keep
01:04:16
wanting it to go somewhere obviously but
01:04:18
I also kept expecting it to go somewhere
01:04:20
you never sit on the court for that long
01:04:22
right it doesn't happen even if like
01:04:24
you're playing you know over a pop song
01:04:27
or just like you're you're filling in
01:04:28
for something even that has you know a
01:04:30
progression or even if it doesn't have
01:04:32
much of a progression it's not an hour
01:04:33
straight so
01:04:35
um that was tough obviously you know I
01:04:38
was running out of things to play very
01:04:39
early on because I didn't want to just
01:04:40
repeat myself I didn't want to play the
01:04:42
same old stuff so I was just exploring
01:04:44
so in one sense it was cool because I
01:04:47
got to get out of my normal stuff you
01:04:50
can't just play your normal thing when
01:04:52
you're playing one chord for an hour
01:04:55
yeah final thoughts on this is I'll
01:04:56
never do this again absolutely not it
01:04:59
was maybe good for once maybe if you
01:05:01
liked it I hope you liked it and uh that
01:05:03
that'll make it worth it I do have a
01:05:05
challenge for for you you don't have to
01:05:07
sit here and play one chord for an hour
01:05:09
but I do want to start a one chord
01:05:12
challenge I say challenge it's more like
01:05:14
just me challenging you to do it it's
01:05:16
not like a competition or anything but
01:05:18
it'd be awesome if you can try this out
01:05:20
even if it's take one chord over you
01:05:22
know a minute or you could do a length
01:05:24
of time like 32 measures or 64 bars
01:05:26
whatever if you have iReal Pro the
01:05:28
easiest way to just create your own song
01:05:29
and just write one quarter four measures
01:05:32
of one chord and just put a repeat so if
01:05:34
you've never done this before maybe just
01:05:35
like 30 seconds of playing one chord or
01:05:38
a minute or you know an entire chorus
01:05:40
worth of a song Length usually but one
01:05:43
chord try it out for yourself and I'd
01:05:44
love to see what you have the easiest
01:05:46
way for me to check it out is if you
01:05:48
post on Instagram you could tag me and
01:05:50
hashtag one chord challenge also if you
01:05:53
put it on YouTube you can also send it
01:05:55
to me that way put hashtag one chord
01:05:57
challenge anyway you kind of get it out
01:05:58
there I think will be cool for people to
01:06:00
put out their one chord videos or audios
01:06:03
or whatever but I really more
01:06:05
importantly I want you you to just try
01:06:06
it for yourself now there is an actual
01:06:08
point to doing this besides just being
01:06:09
like a goofy video and saying I played
01:06:11
for an hour but it's to get out of the
01:06:14
normal way of playing and to really
01:06:16
focus on those other Concepts I always
01:06:18
talk about non-note musical elements and
01:06:21
after a while the harmony almost becomes
01:06:23
irrelevant I'm just trying to create
01:06:24
shapes and I'm trying to create these
01:06:26
different tensions different colors
01:06:27
using different rhythms articulations
01:06:29
intervals you heard me do a lot of like
01:06:31
large interval jumps all the way down
01:06:33
low to that low a you know into the
01:06:35
altissimo different types of jumps
01:06:36
different mixed meter type
01:06:39
phrases where I'm playing like five over
01:06:41
four or three over two or something like
01:06:43
that those are all things that you can
01:06:45
experiment with when you take the
01:06:46
harmony out of the equation so many
01:06:48
times when we're playing we're so
01:06:49
focused on just hitting the chord
01:06:51
changes that we forget about making a
01:06:53
solo we forget about phrasing we forget
01:06:54
about Melody we forget about you know
01:06:57
Dynamics and articulations and all this
01:06:59
different stuff so this exercise or this
01:07:02
one chord challenge I think will be
01:07:04
really good for you to break out of that
01:07:06
even though this video is all about
01:07:07
playing over one chord if you want to
01:07:09
solo more melodically more lyrically
01:07:11
through Tunes with multiple chords I
01:07:13
have an entire free Master Class about
01:07:15
that you can check that out using the
01:07:16
link at the top of the description down
01:07:18
below also put it in the pinned comment
01:07:20
but once you click that link you get
01:07:22
instant access to this 40 minute Master
01:07:24
Class where I talk about my six step
01:07:26
voice leading process that'll really
01:07:27
help you create more horizontal and
01:07:29
melodic solos over any set of chord
01:07:31
changes it also comes with a bunch of
01:07:33
PDFs that you can print out save for
01:07:35
yourself that I go over in the video as
01:07:37
well but you can keep them as reference
01:07:39
material as well as the video thank you
01:07:41
so much for watching this video I'm
01:07:43
curious to see how long you stuck around
01:07:44
for did any of you watch all the way
01:07:47
through that'd be pretty crazy did
01:07:48
anybody catch the little thing I said
01:07:50
there at some point in the video I'm uh
01:07:52
curious to see what you comment down
01:07:54
below because of that like I said thanks
01:07:55
so much for watching this one and I will
01:07:58
see you in the next video and it won't
01:08:00
be me playing anything for an hour long

Focusing on the non-note musical elements is crucial because when playing over a single chord you don't have the harmonic motion of a progression. In this video I wanted to take that to the next level, and improvise over one chord FOR AN HOUR! How did I do with this? What did I think after? Watch to find out!
