Jahrhunderts kommt der junge Hilfspfarrer Joseph Mohr nach Oberndorf an der Salzach und will dort die vom Glauben abtrünnigen Oberndorfer wieder bekehren. Er gerät in die Auseinandersetzung der Flussschiffer mit den reichen Kaufleuten und den Kirchenoberen. Mohr stellt sich auf die Seite der Schiffer. Seine Verbündeten sind der Lehrer Franz Gruber – mit dem er später das Lied “Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht” schreiben wird – und Markus, der Sohn des Schifferführers. Seine Gegner sind der reiche Großkaufmann Burgschwaiger, der die Schiffer in die Arbeitslosigkeit treibt und eine Eisenbahn entlang der Salzach bauen möchte, und Nöstler, der Pfarrer von Oberndorf.
