Description:

Do you know what's most surprising about the history of serfdom? The Russian peasant was a free man for much longer than he was a slave. Yes, you heard that right. When we're taught about serfdom in school, it seems as if the Russian peasant was born with a yoke around his neck somewhere around the time of Rurik and walked around bent over until 1861. But that's not entirely true, to put it mildly. And frankly, it's a massive historical oversimplification. Here's a fact to start: at the time of serfdom's abolition in 1861, serfs weren't 90 percent of Russia's population, as many people think, or even 70 percent. The real figure will surprise you, and I promise to reveal it at the very end of this video. For now, let's address the main question: who really "shackled" the Russian peasant and why did it happen? Today we'll talk about things rarely discussed in school textbooks. First, we'll find out exactly when the Russian peasant lost his freedom and who exactly is to blame—spoiler alert: it wasn't one person or even one decree. Second, we'll understand why "enlightened" monarchs, who corresponded with Voltaire and talked about freedom, tightened the screws of serfdom even more than their "dark-minded" predecessors. Third, we'll learn what life was really like for a serf—because there's a huge gap between the Hollywood image of a downtrodden slave and reality. And finally, we'll understand why many peasants perceived the "liberation" of 1861 as yet another form of enslavement. Ready for a journey into the past, where everything turns out to be different?
