The city is crossed by numerous canals, the main one of which runs along the central shopping street of Dordrecht - Vorstraat. In the city center, at the intersection of Worstraat and Wiesstraat, a monument was erected to the brothers Jan and Cornelis de Witt, Republican politicians who were killed by the Orangists in The Hague in 1672. The Worstraat ends with the gates of the former city outpost of Grotshofdsport, built in 1618. Of the 12 fortress gates of Dordrecht, only two have survived - the second, Katreineport, was built in 1652. Next to the New Port is the Gothic Grote Kerk, built in the 14th century and remaining one of the largest churches in the Netherlands. There are a number of museums in the city, including the Dordrecht Museum, whose collection contains paintings by Dutch artists, mainly from the 17th century and later, including works by such authors as Jacob and Albert Cuyp, Jan van Goyen, Adam Willaerts, Ari Scheffer, Josef Israels and G. H. Breitner.
