🔧 I Turned a Drill Press Into a Vertical Lathe — Then Built a Perfect Tool With It Most people believe you need an expensive metal lathe to make precise tools. In this unique build, I combined two of my most important projects into one complete, step-by-step video — showing how a regular drill press can be transformed into a vertical lathe, and then used to make a real, functional hand tool with accuracy and control. ▶ Part 1: Turning a Drill Press Into a Vertical Lathe To support the workpiece, I built a simple but effective tailstock using: • Just two bearings • A single bolt • A few pieces of wood The bolt head was carefully sharpened and centered inside the bearings, creating a surprisingly smooth and stable tailstock. This minimalist design proves that precision doesn’t require expensive machines — only understanding, creativity, and skill. ▶ Part 2: Making a Tool on the Vertical Lathe To test this setup in a real-world situation, I used the vertical lathe to build a custom awl tool from scratch.
