00:00:01
can you see those puppies out
00:00:03
there
00:00:04
wow those are black flies and what I'm
00:00:08
going to do is I'm going to get out just
00:00:09
for a sec and you'll see how bad they
00:00:11
are once they detect a
00:00:13
human jeez I'm sacrificing myself here
00:00:17
just stopped for a pee on my way up to
00:00:20
the Wilderness and I realized
00:00:23
wow this is
00:00:26
ridiculous there you see all those
00:00:38
well hello welcome back to the eono
00:00:42
challenge today we're going to do first
00:00:45
of a series of episodes on the biting
00:00:48
insects that we have to deal with when
00:00:50
we're out in the wild and of course the
00:00:53
first one to greet us is the star of
00:00:57
today's
00:00:58
show the
00:01:02
blackfly and of course it pays to know a
00:01:05
little bit about thine enemy if you wish
00:01:10
to combat it and still enjoy
00:01:12
yourself out in the
00:01:15
wild so here's a few things you need to
00:01:19
know about the black fly now of course
00:01:22
the first thing you need to know about
00:01:24
these pesky creatures is their habitat
00:01:28
or do they like to live and grow grow
00:01:31
up and it seems that unlike mosquitoes
00:01:36
which we're all very familiar with it
00:01:38
seem to last all season black flies
00:01:41
prefer moving
00:01:44
water the kind of clean flowing water
00:01:47
that you find in abundance in the early
00:01:49
spring after the snow has melted so
00:01:53
we'll talk about the blackflies
00:01:55
lifespan it starts when the female lays
00:01:58
her eggs in free flowing clean
00:02:04
water and then the eggs hatch into the
00:02:07
larvi stage and the larvi like to attach
00:02:11
themselves to underwater
00:02:14
structures where they'll spend the next
00:02:16
3 to 14 days filtering small particulate
00:02:20
out of the flowing water to feed
00:02:23
themselves and then they change to the
00:02:25
Pupi stage and go dormant until spring
00:02:30
when we first encounter them and what
00:02:32
happens in the spring when the water
00:02:34
heats up to about 5 to 10 degrees above
00:02:38
zero they hatch from the pupus stage
00:02:41
into a self-created bubble of air and
00:02:44
Float to the surface as a fully formed
00:02:48
ready to fly biting
00:02:51
adults I got a good crop around me right
00:02:53
now okay male and female black flies
00:02:57
mate almost immediately
00:03:00
and the males really aren't a problem
00:03:02
they live out their life eating nectar
00:03:05
and water until they die it's the
00:03:08
females that are particularly bothersome
00:03:12
she needs a blood meal in order to have
00:03:16
the energy to create and lay the 150 to
00:03:20
600 eggs she's going to lay in her
00:03:25
lifetime now in order to get out the
00:03:27
blood that she needs she going to use
00:03:30
her mouth to cut into my skin and create
00:03:35
a little opening and then she's going to
00:03:38
secrete saliva and an
00:03:42
anticoagulant and then she's just going
00:03:43
to drink her own body weight in blood
00:03:48
from that cut that she's
00:03:50
made Lovely isn't it and of course it's
00:03:54
this saliva and antiag cocktail that's
00:03:58
in that cut that causes us to swell and
00:04:03
react and
00:04:06
itch and if you get enough of these some
00:04:09
people who are particularly sensitive
00:04:11
can even have a very nasty allergic
00:04:14
reaction to the bug bites and go into
00:04:18
antiac shock and unfortunately this egg
00:04:23
laying and biting cycle doesn't happen
00:04:27
just once one female can do this several
00:04:29
times
00:04:30
one blood
00:04:32
feeding will give her the energy she
00:04:34
needs to develop and lay a batch of eggs
00:04:37
then she can do this again and again
00:04:40
during her entire life cycle which is
00:04:43
why they seem to persist for quite a
00:04:45
long time in the
00:04:47
spring but that's going to end when
00:04:51
those streams and rivers finally dry up
00:04:55
on mass in the
00:04:57
wild blackfly season
00:05:01
is
00:05:02
over something else that distinguishes
00:05:05
black flies from the other pesky biting
00:05:08
insect that we have to deal with the
00:05:10
mosquito is that they prefer to be
00:05:12
outside they're not going to follow you
00:05:15
indoors and if they do their main
00:05:17
objective is to try and get back outside
00:05:20
so retreating to your tent your cottage
00:05:24
or even your car is one great way to
00:05:28
defend yourself against these biting
00:05:31
insects they also prefer to do their
00:05:34
deed during the
00:05:36
day once you uh get into nighttime of
00:05:40
course they rest on the surrounding
00:05:43
vegetation until morning when they can
00:05:46
start their search for a blood meal once
00:05:50
again now at this point some of you
00:05:53
watching at home might be wondering why
00:05:56
black flies aren't a huge problem back
00:06:00
in the
00:06:01
city
00:06:03
well I'm going to show you now blackfly
00:06:06
season is barely noticeable here in the
00:06:08
city because we've eliminated all the
00:06:12
running water here's a good example this
00:06:15
is a stream I used to play in when I was
00:06:17
a
00:06:18
kid and right
00:06:20
there is a sewer
00:06:23
drain but when I was playing here it
00:06:26
used to be a stream and this time of
00:06:28
year I'd be in there catch ing
00:06:30
minnows but it is now part of a brand
00:06:34
new
00:06:35
subdivision and the stream has been
00:06:38
turned into an underground sewer I do
00:06:41
chuckle a bit of a knowing chuckle when
00:06:44
homeowners complain about the two or
00:06:47
three blackflies that are buzzing around
00:06:48
their heads in their backyards this time
00:06:50
of
00:06:51
year they don't have a blackfly problem
00:06:54
but I guess the next question we need to
00:06:57
answer is how do they find us now you
00:07:00
may think you're the one feeding the
00:07:03
next generation of blackfly but that's
00:07:05
not entirely the case it's the animals
00:07:09
that spend their entire lifespan outside
00:07:13
here that are keeping these guys alive
00:07:15
and those are your warm-blooded mammals
00:07:17
your raccoons your skunks your
00:07:21
porcupines deer elk and the
00:07:25
like so the first thing they're
00:07:28
attracted to is of course your heat
00:07:31
signature they can sense your warmth
00:07:34
against the cooler background and they
00:07:37
literally lie in weight on the
00:07:39
surrounding vegetation until they sense
00:07:42
that heat and that's what brings them to
00:07:45
life and start racing towards your body
00:07:50
next thing that attracts them is the
00:07:52
carbon
00:07:53
dioxide from my breath so the more I
00:07:57
speak during this particular segment the
00:08:00
more I'm going to attract them from the
00:08:03
surrounding
00:08:04
vegetation and the last thing that's
00:08:06
going to attract them of course is my
00:08:09
perspiration or more specifically the
00:08:12
pers the lactic acid in my
00:08:16
perspiration there is some evidence that
00:08:19
I read that says that perfumes and
00:08:22
cologn and creams and makeup and so on
00:08:25
and the uh smell from those also attract
00:08:27
them but I couldn't find any science
00:08:29
ific evidence of that it's more
00:08:31
anecdotal but um you might consider that
00:08:34
as well your first line of defense that
00:08:37
you might reach for in order to protect
00:08:40
you from these biting insects of course
00:08:42
is a bug repellent that contains a
00:08:46
significant amount of DEET now we're not
00:08:50
going to recommend that you use DEET
00:08:53
especially if you are producing videos
00:08:55
for YouTube and there's a very good
00:08:57
reason why we don't make that
00:08:58
recommendation
00:08:59
and I'll put a link down below to a
00:09:02
video that explains that in more detail
00:09:04
we did it very early on in the life of
00:09:07
this Channel and by following that
00:09:10
advice it may save you a bit of
00:09:14
money okay now that we've made it out
00:09:16
into the woods I'm going to test out
00:09:19
this stuff right here and I already know
00:09:22
that this is very effective at combating
00:09:25
biting mosquitoes but I've never really
00:09:28
tested it out against the blackfly so
00:09:30
we're going to try this stuff out today
00:09:33
this is um the off Family Care insect
00:09:36
repellent and it says right here it's
00:09:38
based on the ingredient found in the
00:09:40
Lemon Eucalyptus
00:09:42
plant it does not contain any DEET it
00:09:47
has a pleasant smell and I really don't
00:09:49
mind just Plastering myself at this
00:09:52
stuff in order to stop them from biting
00:09:58
oh I'm so glad we finally made it to
00:10:00
this
00:10:03
segment Don't Be Afraid with this stuff
00:10:06
to put a lot
00:10:08
on and apply it
00:10:11
regularly as you
00:10:13
perspire in order to continue to protect
00:10:17
yourself and it's nice stuff because you
00:10:19
can even put it on your clothes like I'm
00:10:21
doing
00:10:23
here to help keep them from biting so
00:10:27
let's see ooh
00:10:30
there's a lot around me right now and
00:10:33
they're still buzzing
00:10:37
around so far so
00:10:41
good I don't know if you can see them we
00:10:44
should get some sky behind my head here
00:10:47
I don't know if you can see them any
00:10:48
better now but they're still swarming
00:10:51
around me quite a
00:10:52
bit but they stopped
00:10:55
landing and
00:10:57
biting which at this stage which is all
00:10:59
I
00:11:01
want I don't want them biting me
00:11:04
anymore I'll just give them a
00:11:08
sec to decide what they want to
00:11:23
do I've even got a few mosquitoes I
00:11:25
don't know if you can see those maybe
00:11:27
hear them in the microphone
00:11:29
the first few mosquitoes of the season
00:11:31
are already making their
00:11:33
debut but as I said before this stuff is
00:11:37
very effective at keeping them at
00:11:41
Bay but what we're testing at the moment
00:11:43
is black
00:11:46
flies and I can say during this very
00:11:50
quick
00:11:51
test that so far it seems to be keeping
00:11:53
them off me and that's a good start but
00:11:57
there is more that you can and need to
00:11:59
do one thing you want to consider when out
00:12:02
in bug
00:12:03
seasons is wearing light colored
00:12:06
clothing like this the prey species that
00:12:10
these biting insects are normally
00:12:12
getting for their blood meal are dark in
00:12:14
color they have dark fur and so the
00:12:16
theory is that they are also attracted
00:12:19
by dark areas your dark clothing or in
00:12:23
my case what's left of my dark hair so
00:12:26
the next thing that you're going to want
00:12:28
to have is a physical barrier and this
00:12:31
is the no sweat
00:12:36
bandan and this offers a physical
00:12:40
barrier against these bugs because they
00:12:43
really like to get in amongst your hair
00:12:47
black flies do anyway and bite you along
00:12:50
your your hairline and your scalp so a
00:12:54
physical barrier like this one is
00:12:55
essential for keeping them off your head
00:12:58
now snow fitting hat is also going to
00:13:00
help you out like my favorite Tilly but
00:13:03
as you can see I've got these rather
00:13:05
large grommets in it on both sides and
00:13:09
they're great for ventilation but they
00:13:11
also are a great way for the tiny little
00:13:14
black flies to get at my head so I've
00:13:16
got this physical barrier underneath and
00:13:20
then my Tilly over top which also
00:13:24
provides great protection against the
00:13:27
Sun or UV rays
00:13:30
now because of the bug repellent that I
00:13:32
have on the black flies may not be
00:13:34
biting but they're still swarming around
00:13:36
my head and that can be particularly
00:13:39
Troublesome for some people so you may
00:13:41
want a physical barrier against them and
00:13:45
that's where the little pocket inside my
00:13:47
Tilly hat comes in nice and
00:13:50
handy inside here I can stuff a nice
00:13:55
head mosquito net in that pocket and get
00:13:58
out
00:13:59
if I need it with the flaps down like
00:14:02
this I
00:14:04
simply pull the headnet over my
00:14:10
hat and make sure it's snug around my
00:14:13
neck and there I have a physical barrier
00:14:17
to keep them off of my face which works
00:14:20
very well and I keep it handy in my hat
00:14:24
all summer long for mosquitoes which can
00:14:27
come out and bite you at anytime now for
00:14:30
black flies you want to make sure you've
00:14:32
got snug fitting clothes no gaps like
00:14:36
this like I have in my t-shirt because
00:14:40
black flies like to climb under your
00:14:42
clothes to get at your skin and bite you
00:14:46
and that includes your pant legs you may
00:14:49
want to tuck your loose pant leg into
00:14:53
your sock or if you have good hiking
00:14:55
pants like this you may want
00:14:58
to cinch up the elastic like that so
00:15:02
that they can't fly up your pant leg and
00:15:05
bite you now especially if you're
00:15:07
dealing with mosquitoes not just black
00:15:09
flies you're going to know that a tight
00:15:11
fitting t-shirt like this isn't going to
00:15:13
offer you much protection so you may
00:15:15
need to go the extra distance a full bug
00:15:19
net and one tip I'll give you about
00:15:22
these bug Nets is if you're a medium
00:15:24
make sure you get an extra large because
00:15:26
you want this to be nice and baggy when
00:15:29
you have it on to keep the mosquitoes
00:15:31
from landing on your shirt and biting
00:15:34
through the
00:15:38
fabric there you go now they're not
00:15:40
biting me on my back where I couldn't
00:15:43
get any bug
00:15:45
repellent feels
00:15:47
better okay now we're ready to go hiking
00:15:51
in the woods and possibly find some
00:15:55
morels but that is a segment for another
00:15:58
video video thanks for watching and go
00:16:02
out and enjoy yourself in the early
00:16:04
spring bug conditions with a new
00:16:07
information that I've given you today
00:16:09
thanks a lot for watching and we'll see
00:16:11
you in the next video bye for now
