00:00:00
hey happy Friday this week Apple's AI
00:00:02
exposed Microsoft's biggest weakness the
00:00:04
exciting new Ram standard is coming to
00:00:06
computers big and small and Samsung
00:00:08
showed off some really exciting new chip
00:00:10
Technologies welcome to the Friday check
00:00:12
[Music]
00:00:17
out this video was sponsored by nebula
00:00:20
okay this week we're starting not with
00:00:21
the brief but instead with the first
00:00:23
story unless you've been blissfully on a
00:00:25
vacation somewhere you've probably heard
00:00:26
that Apple did a thing and primarily an
00:00:29
AI thing and I wanted to contrast this
00:00:31
with Microsoft's newest AI blunders for
00:00:34
the full effect so at WWDC apple as
00:00:37
usual announced updates for every one of
00:00:39
its operating systems with the expected
00:00:41
yearly feature drops with new
00:00:42
customization options plus a few useful
00:00:45
things like password managers and an
00:00:46
extremely fancy calculator for the iPad
00:00:49
but the clear focus of the entire event
00:00:51
was Apple intelligence a comprehensive
00:00:54
generative AI system developed by Apple
00:00:56
and integrated into every part of
00:00:58
Apple's operating systems it can do all
00:01:00
the expected things like generate images
00:01:02
or magically erase people from photos or
00:01:05
rewrite your badly worded emails so that
00:01:07
your boss won't fire you Etc
00:01:09
feature-wise this is more or less the
00:01:11
same stuff that we've seen from other
00:01:12
players but Apple's real claim for
00:01:14
differentiation is of course privacy
00:01:17
they say that as much of this AI as
00:01:19
possible runs locally on your device
00:01:21
they say that whenever a bigger model is
00:01:23
needed it falls back on a special Cloud
00:01:25
that Apple has developed which they
00:01:27
claim is super private and whenever the
00:01:29
system needs to get access to a third
00:01:31
party like chat GPT the user explicitly
00:01:33
gets asked to confirm this private
00:01:36
context was pretty widely celebrated as
00:01:38
a great thing and everyone largely
00:01:40
reported it as more or less an actual
00:01:42
fact apple is surely keeping your data
00:01:44
private Sur the AI can access a ton of
00:01:47
personal data about you it can screen
00:01:49
record basically every app that it wants
00:01:51
to it can send all of that data to a
00:01:53
cloud if it wants to even one that
00:01:54
directly belongs to Apple but because
00:01:57
much of this is done typically on device
00:01:58
and because Apple says it's private I
00:02:00
guess it's private and I have to say I
00:02:02
mostly believe Apple here as well which
00:02:04
really puts Microsoft's latest Fiasco
00:02:06
around Reco into context so Windows
00:02:09
recall was announced with theoretically
00:02:11
many very similar privacy claims it's an
00:02:13
AI system deeply integrated into
00:02:15
Microsoft's operating system which
00:02:16
Microsoft promised would run only
00:02:18
offline on your really powerful npu to
00:02:21
preserve your privacy so even though it
00:02:22
had access to a crazy amount of
00:02:24
information about you that shouldn't
00:02:26
have worried you sounds kind of similar
00:02:28
to Apple but unlike Apple AI the
00:02:30
internet instantly decided that recall
00:02:32
was a massive privacy Invasion from the
00:02:34
millisecond it was announced and people
00:02:36
simply chose to not believe any of
00:02:38
Microsoft's claims around privacy
00:02:40
security researchers quickly declared
00:02:42
recall as a security disaster as soon as
00:02:45
they saw it and as a result of the
00:02:46
backlash Microsoft had announced updates
00:02:48
to recall making it opt in for all users
00:02:51
as well as adding encryption
00:02:52
technologies that really should have
00:02:53
been there from the start and this week
00:02:55
the company has even pulled the preview
00:02:57
build that recoil kind of soft launched
00:02:59
in hey editing Martin here and it turns
00:03:01
out that after I finished filming the
00:03:03
episode Microsoft officially delayed the
00:03:04
launch of the recall feature until they
00:03:06
fixed their security issues completely
00:03:08
so it is not even going to launch
00:03:09
together with the co-pilot plus PCS so
00:03:11
things are getting even worse for them
00:03:13
now part of the problem is of course
00:03:14
that Microsoft launched a feature that
00:03:16
was genuinely not as private and as
00:03:18
secure as it probably should have been
00:03:19
from the start but people instantly
00:03:21
rejected what Microsoft was doing before
00:03:23
any of these concerns were actually
00:03:25
confirmed which points to a much bigger
00:03:27
problem Microsoft having absolutely no
00:03:29
trust with its user based which is kind
00:03:31
of the exact opposite of what Apple has
00:03:34
Microsoft not only completely messed up
00:03:36
this specific roll out but the company
00:03:37
also has such a massive accumulated
00:03:40
amount of mistrust from shoving every
00:03:42
single square inch of Windows and their
00:03:44
services full with ads and tracking and
00:03:46
crappy MSN news and whatever that people
00:03:49
just disbelieve them by default that is
00:03:51
the exact opposite of the reaction that
00:03:53
Apple got whose privacy claims were
00:03:55
simply accepted as true before anyone
00:03:57
ever got to test them and I actually
00:03:58
hope that Microsoft learned out of this
00:04:00
experience because especially in the era
00:04:02
of AI where so much personal data and
00:04:04
everything else is on the line trust is
00:04:06
more important than ever so they better
00:04:08
start earning it okay for my second
00:04:10
story of the week do you remember this
00:04:11
new kind of ram that we talked about a
00:04:13
few weeks ago LP cam 2 That was supposed
00:04:15
to make replaceable RAM and laptops a
00:04:17
thing well this week first its cousin
00:04:19
called cam 2 showed up in desktop
00:04:22
motherboards at computex from the likes
00:04:23
of MSI Asus and AOK and second a steam
00:04:27
deck competitor from the Taiwanese
00:04:28
company a data included it in a handheld
00:04:31
gaming prototype as well and as a
00:04:33
reminder these are now the second and
00:04:35
the third category featuring this new
00:04:37
Ram standard after they were spotted in
00:04:39
laptops just a few weeks ago now the
00:04:41
handheld is not coming to Market until
00:04:43
next year and the actual availability of
00:04:44
the desktop motherboards will take some
00:04:46
time as well but it's a good sign that
00:04:47
the tech will be adopted relatively soon
00:04:50
and in multiple categories too not just
00:04:52
the laptops like we might have
00:04:53
originally assumed in desktops the
00:04:55
benefit is that you get much smaller
00:04:57
modules that also don't stick out which
00:04:59
might be especially attractive for
00:05:00
smaller builds plus regardless of the
00:05:02
size there's supposedly better signal
00:05:04
integrity and better power efficiency as
00:05:06
well for now the prices of Cam 2 memory
00:05:08
seem pretty high but most of the
00:05:10
opinions that I could find have said
00:05:11
that the prices should probably come
00:05:13
down over time as mass manufacturing
00:05:15
kicks in so I guess yay for cam 2
00:05:17
everywhere okay and for my third story
00:05:19
of the week Samsung's chip business is
00:05:21
staging a comeback in two key ways first
00:05:24
the company announced that it will be
00:05:25
ready to start mass-- producing 2
00:05:27
nanometer chips for mobile devices in
00:05:29
2020 5 these will use gate allaround
00:05:31
technology which Samsung says is ahead
00:05:33
of tsmc by 2 to 3 years now tsmc has of
00:05:37
course handly beaten Samsung without
00:05:38
gate allaround technology so far so this
00:05:41
doesn't necessarily mean that Samsung
00:05:42
will Dethrone them but it's a good sign
00:05:44
that they'll get to 2 nanometers
00:05:45
relatively quickly and second Samsung
00:05:48
also has a whole plan for becoming the
00:05:50
leading maker of AI chips and this plan
00:05:52
is all about memory historically
00:05:54
Samsung's Foundry business and memory
00:05:56
chip business were run independently but
00:05:58
AI chips need tons and tons of
00:06:01
specialized high bandwidth memory and
00:06:03
Samsung is now saying that it will
00:06:04
integrate its two businesses into
00:06:06
something called Samsung AI solutions
00:06:08
that will offer much faster turnaround
00:06:10
times and also better memory
00:06:12
Integrations only time can tell if that
00:06:14
will help okay and moving on to the
00:06:15
brief we start with the sad news that
00:06:17
Jabra announced that it will end its
00:06:19
consumer earbud business not a huge
00:06:22
surprise as they hadn't had any big hits
00:06:23
lately but kind of sad next the hip
00:06:26
social media app called Bal that prompts
00:06:28
you once a day at a random time to post
00:06:30
a real photo to your friends is being
00:06:32
acquired for half a billion euros the
00:06:34
new owner Voodoo is a French company
00:06:36
same as bual and I really hope that they
00:06:38
can boost the app it's actually still
00:06:40
lowkey one of my favorite social apps so
00:06:42
fingers crossed moving on the pixel 8
00:06:44
series now has USBC to display port
00:06:47
functionality which together with
00:06:48
continuous leaks from source code is
00:06:50
fueling rumors that Android will get a
00:06:52
proper desktop mode like Samsung Dex
00:06:54
really soon would be cool and in kind of
00:06:56
related news we've also learned that
00:06:58
Windows May soon add your Android phone
00:07:00
to file explorer using phone link which
00:07:03
would be a super useful feature I use
00:07:05
phone link all the time it works great
00:07:06
on a Samsung phone so I'd really like
00:07:08
this moving on Sam Altman this week said
00:07:10
that open aai managed to double its
00:07:13
annualized Revenue to 3.4 billion doar
00:07:16
that is really impressive even if this
00:07:18
is an unverified statement and even if
00:07:20
we don't know anything about
00:07:21
profitability just yet apparently the
00:07:23
new Apple partnership will not help them
00:07:25
increase revenues though as we've
00:07:27
recently learned that Apple will be
00:07:28
paying them for had GPT on their iPhones
00:07:31
through distribution instead of cash you
00:07:33
know when a company hires an artist and
00:07:34
tells them that they'll be paid an
00:07:35
exposure this is Apple doing that with
00:07:38
open AI okay and for our release monitor
00:07:40
we start with the brand new Galaxy watch
00:07:43
Fe which is the first ever Fe model of a
00:07:45
Galaxy watch the tech inside is pretty L
00:07:48
gen but for $199 maybe that's okay
00:07:51
moving on the insta 360 go 3s is also
00:07:54
here and this is a small but nice
00:07:55
upgrade over the three it can now do 4K
00:07:58
instead of 2.7k and generally has
00:08:00
noticeably better image quality along
00:08:02
with a few features like apple find my
00:08:04
the price is still $400 just like in the
00:08:06
last generation but the trade-off is
00:08:07
that the battery life is now a little
00:08:09
bit shorter than before and talking of
00:08:11
funky cameras Apple teased first Inu
00:08:13
lens from Canon and then a whole
00:08:16
upcoming camera from Blackmagic designed
00:08:18
specifically for shooting immersive
00:08:20
video for The Vision Pro the Blackmagic
00:08:22
one even has a separate sensor for each
00:08:24
of its lenses kind of cool moving on it
00:08:27
seems like HTC is still making phone
00:08:29
somehow and they now have a new model in
00:08:31
the form of the U24 Pro it's somehow
00:08:34
even not a completely terrible deal at
00:08:36
$549 and pretty decent mid-range specs
00:08:39
as a contrast the new light phone 3 is
00:08:42
also out and this is definitely a
00:08:44
questionable deal it's the third
00:08:46
generation of the company's distraction
00:08:48
free phones with the big new updates
00:08:50
being that it now has a camera and an
00:08:52
OLED screen which is nice but the price
00:08:54
also inexplicably jumped from
00:08:56
$350 to $800 this year year $800 for the
00:09:01
most basic of phones
00:09:03
imaginable no man oh well that's a for
00:09:05
the news part uh what's that you want
00:09:07
