00:00:15
hey everybody
00:00:16
aaron whitehead here again excited to be
00:00:19
with you
00:00:20
i know it's been a while but i've got
00:00:21
some exciting things coming want to
00:00:24
announce a partnership i've made with
00:00:26
the tanara music learning platform more
00:00:29
information
00:00:30
on that to come if you're watching this
00:00:33
in the weeks and months ahead you can
00:00:34
even click in the description below i'll
00:00:36
have information there
00:00:38
and a link to the resource that i'm
00:00:41
going to be sharing about
00:00:42
releasing in the next few weeks so i've
00:00:44
been really
00:00:46
enjoying playing some jazz standards
00:00:48
lately
00:00:49
and there's none other that i love more
00:00:52
than fly me to the moon
00:00:54
it's such a great jazz standard and so i
00:00:57
wanted to teach you guys a little bit
00:00:59
of how to do it and it's not that
00:01:00
complicated i'm going to show different
00:01:02
layers of complexity
00:01:03
you can pick the one that fits your
00:01:05
skill level right now and just build
00:01:07
from there so
00:01:08
i've got a picture here of the lead
00:01:10
sheet and let's focus
00:01:12
first on looking at the melody line
00:01:19
[Music]
00:01:21
this is middle c right here and so
00:01:25
uh the melody line is relatively
00:01:28
simple i always like to look for
00:01:29
patterns okay so we start
00:01:31
up here on uh this c an octave above
00:01:34
middle c
00:01:35
with our pinky and we're basically going
00:01:38
to go down in five
00:01:39
note groups like this okay so pinkies
00:01:42
here thumbs here and all the other
00:01:43
fingers fall in between
00:01:45
and we're just simply going to walk from
00:01:47
the top down to the bottom like this
00:01:51
okay so that's fly me to the moon okay
00:01:55
we walk down and then we walk up
00:01:58
but when we get to the top we skip this
00:02:00
note this b
00:02:01
and jump straight to the c that's the
00:02:03
pattern so it's a walk down
00:02:05
a walk back up but you skip the second
00:02:08
to last note so it's like this
00:02:10
[Music]
00:02:14
okay and then we slide our whole hand
00:02:16
down to the next five
00:02:18
and we're going to do a similar pattern
00:02:19
but this time we're just going to walk
00:02:21
down to the bottom
00:02:22
and land at the bottom
00:02:26
okay so that's kind of the whole phrase
00:02:29
right there if i put it together it goes
00:02:31
like this
00:02:37
okay that's the the pattern now that's
00:02:40
going to repeat
00:02:41
as i slide my fingers down to the next
00:02:43
five okay so now i'm here
00:02:45
start at the top
00:02:50
now on this one there's a change in the
00:02:53
key a little bit it throws in a different
00:02:56
chord here and so we're gonna
00:02:57
rather than going down these same five
00:03:00
notes we're gonna actually go down here
00:03:04
okay so that's kind of a change in the
00:03:06
phrase there at the end of the
00:03:08
second part so that second section there
00:03:11
again from this
00:03:12
five note pattern is like this
00:03:20
okay so now let me do both of those
00:03:23
parts together
00:03:24
all the way through like this
00:03:32
[Music]
00:03:40
all right so that's kind of the end of
00:03:43
that phrase the beginning phrase and
00:03:44
here's where it changes a little bit
00:03:46
okay we're gonna go from here
00:03:52
all right so i was on the c c sharp
00:04:00
and then
00:04:02
[Music]
00:04:08
so that's the second portion of the
00:04:10
phrase it's a little bit more
00:04:11
complicated there's not really a pattern
00:04:13
in there you're just going to have to
00:04:14
familiarize yourself so we ended the
00:04:15
first pattern here
00:04:16
and we go c sharp
00:04:18
[Music]
00:04:23
okay and then we jump down here
00:04:32
all right that's the second half
00:04:36
of uh the melody the first part of the
00:04:38
melody and then it repeats notice the b
00:04:40
section so that was the a section on the
00:04:42
lead sheet now here's the b
00:04:44
section starts the exact same
00:04:56
[Music]
00:04:59
okay exactly same even goes to the same
00:05:01
place here
00:05:04
here's where there's a little change we
00:05:06
land there
00:05:08
and then we go
00:05:12
[Music]
00:05:16
okay i'll do that part b the b section
00:05:22
again
00:05:25
[Music]
00:05:36
okay
00:05:38
[Music]
00:05:47
all right so that's the a and the b
00:05:49
section you'll notice in the b
00:05:50
section there's a coda and so when you
00:05:53
play through and you get all the way
00:05:55
down to the very end of the song
00:05:57
okay then when you get to that coda on
00:05:59
the e minor you're going to jump to that
00:06:01
last line
00:06:02
okay so um starts in other words
00:06:07
please here's the coda we jump up here
00:06:10
we're on that last line we jump to the
00:06:11
high e
00:06:13
and then
00:06:14
[Music]
00:06:18
that's the very last part of the song
00:06:20
that's when you end the song that's how
00:06:22
you end the song
00:06:23
okay so that's the melody line for the
00:06:25
right hand
00:06:26
take a moment go back repeat this
00:06:28
section really learn
00:06:30
the right hand melody okay
00:06:37
now i'm going to show you the left hand
00:06:40
and i'm going to start just by simply
00:06:42
walking
00:06:43
through the chords okay and when i say
00:06:46
walking through i'm just going to see or
00:06:48
play the
00:06:49
root name of each one so we can get the
00:06:51
transitions and that what it's called
00:06:53
the uh
00:06:55
harmonic rhythm the rhythm of the
00:06:56
harmony changes okay
00:06:59
so we start on a and you're gonna notice
00:07:02
a pattern here too okay it's kind of
00:07:04
this pattern where i just
00:07:05
walk down like this
00:07:06
[Music]
00:07:09
okay but it's uh four beats on each one
00:07:12
so one two
00:07:13
three four one
00:07:17
[Music]
00:07:28
that takes me the end of the second line
00:07:30
and then i jump back up here to the g
00:07:32
again g c
00:07:36
now slight change here i'm at the end of
00:07:38
the third line i'm gonna go
00:07:39
e minor a only two beats on each one of
00:07:42
those and i can even come down here to
00:07:45
the low d
00:07:47
and then down on that c
00:07:50
which i'm at the end of the towards the
00:07:53
end of the fourth line and then i go
00:07:54
b that's the turnaround that takes me
00:07:57
back
00:07:58
to the uh to the b section at the start
00:08:01
of it again
00:08:06
c f i'm on the second line of the b
00:08:10
section
00:08:15
[Music]
00:08:21
a d
00:08:26
c and then the two turn around
00:08:29
it takes me back to the top okay now i'm
00:08:32
repeating the song i'm going to do a
00:08:34
solo or i'm going to sing or whatever
00:08:35
i'm going to do at that point
00:08:37
so now the trick is going to be putting
00:08:38
these together the two hands so
00:08:41
practice that go and work through the
00:08:43
rhythm
00:08:44
of the left hand part
00:08:51
and when you think you're ready try
00:08:52
putting these two parts together like
00:08:54
this
00:08:55
[Music]
00:09:00
and you can swing it with the rhythm
00:09:02
however you want okay
00:09:11
[Music]
00:09:20
so
00:09:22
[Music]
00:09:26
turn around b-section
00:09:40
[Music]
00:09:48
do
00:09:50
end of the b section
00:09:53
[Music]
00:09:58
turn around okay
00:10:02
so that's how that part works um
00:10:05
that is the a section the b section if
00:10:08
you were to go to the ending right there
00:10:10
the coda on the b
00:10:11
section uh let's see if we go from uh
00:10:16
[Music]
00:10:31
all right so that is the uh the whole
00:10:35
thing in terms of right hand left hand
00:10:37
you could just practice that part get
00:10:38
that part down you're going to be
00:10:39
excited that's going to be awesome
00:10:46
when you're ready for the next thing
00:10:48
what you're going to want to do
00:10:49
is uh add the actual chords now you can
00:10:52
do it in the left hand
00:10:53
or you could do it the chords in the
00:10:55
right hand uh and sing
00:10:57
that's up to you what i like to do is
00:11:00
make it actually a walking bass pattern
00:11:04
in the left hand that
00:11:07
kind of gives the rhythm of the song so
00:11:08
what you're going to do for that
00:11:10
is you're going to
00:11:14
actually walk through the notes a minor
00:11:16
7 chord is like this
00:11:17
so i'm going to play one note on each
00:11:19
quarter note
00:11:21
[Music]
00:11:25
so on the a minor 7 a minor seven
00:11:29
d minor seven g
00:11:32
seven c
00:11:35
by the time i get to the second i'm on
00:11:37
c7 okay and then
00:11:39
af major seven b minor
00:11:42
flat five e seven
00:11:46
a minor seven sometimes i like to go
00:11:50
back to that because the c
00:11:51
sharp you notice it goes from a minor to
00:11:53
h uh a7
00:11:54
or you can walk it all the way up and
00:11:57
then d7
00:12:00
g7 c major 7
00:12:04
and then on this e minor a7 you have to
00:12:08
change part way through so i get the e
00:12:10
and the g in there and then i go a
00:12:12
c sharp okay and now i'm back to the d
00:12:14
minor seven
00:12:17
g seven c major seven
00:12:20
and then the turn around i can go down
00:12:22
here and then that's the b7 b minor 7
00:12:25
down there
00:12:26
e7 e to the g and then back to e a minor
00:12:31
to start the b section okay if this is
00:12:33
too much for you just stop stay with the
00:12:35
first two parts
00:12:36
okay if you feel like you want more when
00:12:39
you practice and you're ready for the
00:12:40
next thing here's where you go in the
00:12:41
next part
00:12:42
okay and then when you put them together
00:12:44
it goes like this
00:12:51
[Music]
00:13:04
now
00:13:10
[Music]
00:13:22
i'm sorry
00:13:23
[Music]
00:13:27
b section
00:13:39
[Music]
00:14:00
nice six
00:14:03
[Music]
00:14:13
okay so that's the basic kind of root
00:14:15
part of walking the bass line with the
00:14:17
melody line in the right hand
00:14:24
then what you can do if you want to keep
00:14:25
going you want something more than that
00:14:27
if you want to sing along or you want to
00:14:29
add some rhythm parts
00:14:31
what you're going to do is you're just
00:14:32
going to accent you can accent parts or
00:14:35
you can add other elements of the chord
00:14:39
when you get there so rather than just
00:14:42
doing a simple melody line
00:14:44
[Music]
00:14:49
so i can take parts of the chord
00:14:51
[Music]
00:14:54
and you can play with the melody line
00:14:59
[Music]
00:15:08
oh sorry
00:15:12
[Music]
00:15:24
so
00:15:30
[Music]
00:15:49
you just keep going from there okay
00:15:56
uh if you wanted to sing it i might do
00:15:58
something where i just i'm gonna play
00:16:00
the chords in the right hand and then sing
00:16:02
along like
00:16:08
among the stars
00:16:11
let me see what spring is
00:16:23
hold my hands
00:16:28
in other words
00:16:31
darling kiss me
00:16:36
fill my heart with song and let me
00:16:40
sing forever
00:16:52
in other words
00:17:04
i love you
00:17:05
[Music]
00:17:09
or something like that all right so i
00:17:12
hope you guys enjoyed that different
00:17:13
layers of complexity from the simple
00:17:15
just single bass line and the melody
00:17:17
line to a walking bass line with some
00:17:19
chords even singing it if you want so thank you
00:17:22
guys so much for checking out my videos
00:17:24
for finding me here on youtube
00:17:26
don't forget to like and subscribe god
00:17:28
bless you and we'll see you next time
00:17:32
[Music]
00:17:40
[Music]
00:17:45
you
