Description:

Want to get started with Home Assistant but unsure which hardware is right for you? Raspberry Pi 3, Raspberry Pi 4, the ODROID N2+, or maybe an Intel NUC? Perhaps even Home Assistant Yellow? Here, I'll explain which hardware is right for whom and when, and how you can save a lot of money in the process 🙌 🔗More information, featured hardware, other hardware options & more → https://www.simon42.com/home-assistant-hardware/ ℹ️ Note regarding USB 2.0 ports: Many videos mention that certain peripherals only work in USB 2.0 ports. This is true, but only applies to the Raspberry Pi due to various peculiarities of its USB chipset. I personally use an Intel NUC and can use devices like the Homematic or ZigBee stick without any limitations in the USB 3.0 port. While interference can always occur directly at the USB 3.0 port, this isn't a problem when using a USB extension cable. 🚨 Note on Virtualization & Containers Of course, running Home Assistant OS as a virtual machine with, for example, Proxmox, is also perfectly possible. A video is available here: https://youtu.be/EsNPqoHAjs0 It might get a little trickier with USB devices or other peripherals, but nothing truly challenging. The hardware on which the hypervisor (in this example, Proxmox) runs is completely irrelevant (as long as there's sufficient performance 🚀). So, the hardware choice is entirely up to you 😉 ⚠️However, I advise against the container option.
